10 Times Cover Songs Were Better Than The Original
Cover songs are an interesting breed. You usually love the cover if you love the original song, but you don't have to be a fan of the person who is recording the cover. In some cases, though, you love both versions and both singers, and then your brain is kind of confused, because you're not sure which one you like better. Well, sometimes you do have to choose, even though it's pretty tough. In this case, there are 10 cover songs that are way better than the original. It's not that the first song sucked -- it's that the cover is so inspired, beautifully crafted and just a really fascinating version. It can be kind of confusing if you hear the cover first, or if you only know the cover, because sometimes you think that it's actually the original. Yeah, you can get yourself into some embarrassing situations. Here are 10 of our faves.
10 Avril Lavigne: Tik Tok (Ke$ha)
Did you know that the It's Complicated singer did a cover of Ke$ha's song, and we probably love that version even more? Avril has mostly been in the news lately for her health struggles with Lyme disease but we say, bring on the music, because this girl can really sing. We've been fans since her tie-wearing, skateboarding angry pop-punk days but we think this cover might make the list of her best work ever.
9 Ryan Adams: Wonderwall (Oasis)
If you were a kid of the 90s, you're super in love with Wonderwall. It might be the only Oasis song that you even know, or maybe it's just your favorite. But Ryan Adams' cover of this popular tune is really, really good. The soulful singer-songwriter slows the song way, way down so you can really hear every single lyric and feel them, too. It's a much more contemplative, inspiring version. It's kind of meditative actually and would be a great soundtrack to a quiet walk around your neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon.
8 Ryan Adams: Bad Blood (Taylor Swift)
Who doesn't love Taylor's 1989 album? It's everyone's favorite album ever, right? Sorry Taylor, because we adore you, but we have to give it to Ryan here (again). He broke the Internet when his cover version of your popular album was released in September 2015, and we have to admit that his cover of Bad Blood is super awesome. It just might be even better than the original (yeah, we went there). We love how slow and beautiful this version is. It may not have a celebrity/model squad in the video, but it does have soul.
7 Britney Spears: I Love Rock 'N' Roll (Joan Jett)
Raise your hand if you first saw/heard this song in the Shonda Rhimes-written movie Crossroads. Yup, guilty. But we actually think this is such a great cover, we might love it even more than Joan Jett's awesome version. Props to Britney because she really does an inspired job with this one. Now where is her new album?! We'd love it right now, thanks very much. We heard our favorite pop star is making a major comeback.
6 Taylor Swift: Lose Yourself (Eminem)
Yeah, we feel weird just saying this, but we really loved T-Swift's cover of Lose Yourself. She sang it when performing in Grand Rapids, Michigan back in 2011 and we give her mad props for rapping and doing such a great job. This is a really tough song to sing/rap but she does it perfectly. Find the video on YouTube -- it's seriously worth checking out (a million times).
5 Kelly Clarkson: Someone Like You (Adele)
Now this cover was a totally happy surprise. We're big fans of Kelly Clarkson since she's everyone's fave American Idol winner (obviously) and she's got the pipes to back that win up. We're huge fans of Adele too, of course, and we love her despite the fact that she makes us ugly cry every single time she releases a new single. Seriously, every time. Ugh. But Kelly's cover of Someone Like You is really, really gorgeous. The video we found was from an Australia concert back in 2012. Check it on YouTube. She joked, "I've been avoiding this song because Adele might be one of the best singers of all time." We agree Kelly, but we think you did an awesome job.
4 Michelle Branch: Creep (Radiohead)
The singer-songwriter hasn't had much music out in recent years, but she did do this cover of the Radiohead song. It was featured on an episode of the TV drama Stalker and she really does the tune justice. The original sounds like a mishmash of different genres, but Michelle's version is much slower and we think it's absolutely gorgeous. She managed to make it sound like one of her songs while still being super different from her usual pop fare.
3 Quietdrive: Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper)
We confess that we heard this tune in the fun movie John Tucker Must Die. The band absolutely kills this cover of one of Cyndi Lauper's most popular songs, Time After Time. It's a super slow version and, of course, features a male voice, so it's a different take but we might like it even more. Sorry Cyndi, we still love you a lot.
2 Walk Off The Earth: I Knew You Were Trouble (Taylor Swift)
This Canadian band is absolutely insanely talented, so if you don't know them, check them out ASAP. This version of Taylor's popular single is really, really great. It's super fun and keeps the original spirit of the song, but we have to admit that we kind of like it more. There's just something about this version that speaks to us. It may sound weird but it just has a more girl power kind of vibe than her version (we know, that sounds strange). The band's harmony is beautiful and the fact that they're using their voices as instruments and the whole thing is pretty much acapella is just insanely fun.
1 Walk Off The Earth: Somebody That I Used To Know (Gotye)
Yup, this band is so totally incredible that they need to be mentioned not once but twice. All of their covers rock but this one totally takes the cake. This cover video features five (five!) members of the band all holding the same guitar. And four of them playing the guitar. At the same time. And it's absolute musical perfection. We just love it. You will too -- just don't blame us if you can't stop watching.
