12 Reasons We Think Meredith Should Be With Dr. Thorpe
If you're still watching Grey's Anatomy (and it's totally okay to admit that you are), then you're probably still not over the tragic and surprising death of Derek Shepherd. He was Meredith's soulmate, best friend, post-it husband, and while maybe not her entire world, at least a huge part of it. He died in the worst way possible but let's not dwell on the sad and depressing past. In the past few episodes of the soapy Shonda Rhimes hospital drama, fans were pretty shocked to see a potential love interest introduced for Meredith. Jaws dropped and are probably still hanging open right now. Yeah, we love Derek and we always will, and we'll never stop missing him and wishing that he was back on earth. But it's not the worst idea for Meredith to open herself up to love again… particularly with Will Thorpe. Here are 12 reasons we really, really want Meredith and Dr. Thorpe to be together. Come on, Shonda, make it happen.
12 He's Hot
Let's just be honest here: Will Thorpe is drop-dead gorgeous. He's the new McDreamy, basically, and he needs his own nickname/trending hashtag. He's tall, dark, and handsome and has the most piercing eyes you've ever seen. Of course Derek was unbelievably good-looking, but when you think about it, if it's possible for Meredith to have not one but two legit hunky love interests, why shouldn't she go all in?
11 She Can't Be Sad Forever
Besides losing Derek, Meredith has gone through a lot of tragic events in her lifetime. Her mom tried to kill herself in front of her when she was only a kid. She found out her mom was having a torrid love affair with Richard (love Richard, isn't he just the sweetest, most adorable old man?) and, oh yeah, she almost drowned that one time. Poor Mer. She's honestly suffered way too much and so it would be awesome to see her in love and happy once again.
10 Derek Would Want Her To Be Happy
He's not a jerk. Far from it, actually. Yes, we're writing about him in the present tense because we're still finding it hard to believe and accept that he's truly gone. Grief is real, people. He's definitely in heaven because, well, look how many lives he saved and how much good he did while he was busy being an amazing hunky doctor. Basically, Derek would not want Meredith to give up and not want to experience love again. He's not a monster. He's a good guy and he would be able to accept the fact that she needs to move on.
9 She Deserves A New Love Story
Who doesn't? Everyone deserves love, and if they have more than one love in their life, that's twice as good. Meredith works hard, she takes amazing care of her sweet and adorable children, and she's a great friend to Alex and the rest of the gang, not to mention a stellar doctor. She really deserves to experience a new love story and all the trappings that come with it: the first kiss, the first moment you get butterflies in your stomach thinking about that person, the first talk about what this all means, etc.
8 Her Life Is Depressing
Seriously. It's been two years. She needs to stop only focusing on work and her kids. Those are pretty obvious things in her life and they're not going anywhere anytime soon, so it's completely fine for her to open herself up again and try to be in love with someone new. She can't be alone forever. How lame is that? It's even harder to be alone when you had such an amazing romantic relationship for so long, so there's no reason why she needs to subject herself to a life of loneliness and going to bed alone (and drinking too much wine).
7 She Needs An Ambitious Guy
Derek was ambitious, of course, and so Meredith is already used to being with a super ambitious guy who has hopes and dreams. Since she's got tons of things that she wants to accomplish and she's already such a successful doctor, she really needs to be with someone who has the same goals and plans as her. Will is absolutely perfect when you think of it like that. So really, what's the problem? It's not like he's some bum who doesn't have a job and lives in his parents' basement still.
6 She Needs To Be Brave Again
As you probably know by now, Meredith and Will spent the night and she absolutely freaked out the next morning. She screamed like a crazy person and forced him out of her house, then locked herself in her bedroom for hours. Then she made Amelia and Maggie clean the entire house with her, so she could stew in her grief for a little while longer. Eventually she broke down crying, saying she just wasn't ready after all. But really, she needs to be brave again. She was always the coolest, most courageous, and bravest person at that hospital, and there's no reason why she can't be again.
5 Everyone Wants It To Happen
There's a hilarious scene at the hospital where Maggie tells Meredith to go for it and go on her date with Will. Alex keeps saying she won't go and will cancel (which she basically does), since he's got her down pat. Callie is a big fan of putting yourself out there after a bad break-up or in this case, being left a widow at a super young age. Callie is pretty funny herself and says, "It will be good" and then follows up with, "If it's bad, it's still good" and jokes about dating being like getting on ice skates after not skating in ages.
4 He's Sweet
In a recent episode, Meredith and Will spend a super cute, super sweet, and super romantic evening sitting in his car, eating french fries and chatting about surgery. She quickly realized that spending time with him wasn't quite as terrifying as she originally thought and she was okay inviting him in. Of course, she goes crazy the next morning and that's the end of that. But in the moment, in that adorable car scene, with the pouring rain outside the windows (since it's Seattle, of course), she realizes he's a nice guy.
3 Derek Wasn't 100 Percent Great
Sorry, all Meredith and Derek fans. It's not that he wasn't perfect and totally made for Meredith, it's just that sometimes he forget that, well, she's pretty awesome. As Cristina Yang once said to Meredith, "He's not the sun, you are." The last days of Derek and Meredith's relationship weren't exactly dreamy and super romantic -- let's not forget that he was not all that supportive of her working long hours and being crazy ambitious. So when you think of it like that, sure, she definitely deserves someone who loves how ambitious she is.
2 She Likes Him
It's not like Meredith hates this guy. He's not all that bad to look at, either, and she seems to think he's a pretty great kisser (and they do spend the night together, which she says was pretty awesome too). It's one thing if you don't want to go out with someone that you just don't feel anything for or that bores you to tears. But if you like them, why not go for it? It's so rare to meet someone that you actually feel something for, so she's just being crazy.
1 It's Unexpected
Did you expect Meredith to have a potential love interest, and so soon? Okay, it's been two years since Derek's untimely death, but for us viewers it hasn't been that long at all, so we're a little shell-shocked. But the unexpected moments in love are often the best, because that's what we want. We don't want to wake up every morning and know exactly what's going to happen to us, we want to be surprised and challenged and awed by the beauty of life and love. So we love that this was an unexpected turn in Meredith's story. Plus, Will said, "I'm pretty sure you're worth waiting for." So really, what is Meredith waiting for? The perfect guy is right here. If she really doesn't want him, please send him our way.
