14 Most Attractive Whackos In Hollywood
There's no other way to say it - sometimes, celebrities are just plain weird. Many celebrities tend to keep a fairly low profile, showing up at events when they're required to and being polite towards the paparazzi when they run into them on their errands out and about in California. They limit most of their public comments to the projects they're promoting, or sharing funny anecdotes on talk shows, but as a whole, they carefully control their image and keep things pretty vanilla.
However, there are a few outliers in every group. For every 1,000 average joe celebrities who just do their jobs and then go home to their luxe mansions and families, there is one that just goes off the rails. They lose their temper, they say things no celebrity should say in public, and they engage in behaviors that are just absolutely puzzling. And, given their celebrity status, their weird behavior is usually captured on camera - and most of them couldn't seem to care less. Whether these celebrities are unhinged thanks to the pressures of fame or just forever march to the beat of their own drum, there's no denying that they're as weird as they are gorgeous.
Here are 15 of the sexiest wackos in Hollywood.
15 Shia LaBeouf
Shia LaBeouf got his start playing a goofy younger brother on the Disney show Even Stevens, and like many of his former Disney co-stars, he's gone a little wacky in the years since then. Let's just run through some of his strangest moments. First, he was accused of plagiarism after stealing someone else's rhymes for a 'freestyle' rap (yeah, Shia freestyle rapped). He donned purple spandex and ran laps around a museum in Amsterdam as a type of performance art piece. He peed on the wall outside a Los Angeles restaurant. He showed up at the premiere of his film Nymphomaniac with a paper bag on his head, “I am not famous anymore” written on it. He had another performance art piece at a Los Angeles gallery involving a whip, a bowl of Hershey's Kisses, a bottle of Jack, a bottle of cologne, pliers, and a bowl of notes. I mean, the list is truly endless. Though he's starred in some major films at the start of his career, such as the Transformers series, since then he's snagged primarily indie roles - and that's exactly what seems to suit his offbeat persona.
14 James Franco
James Franco is unique, to say the least. He got his start in Hollywood as a typical heartthrob, playing the handsome object of someone's affections in fluffy teen movies. Then, he started to branch out with films that were a bit meatier. And then, he started to really branch out. Franco played himself on the soap General Hospital as a strange type of performance art, he bombed his hosting gig of the Oscars by being just plain weird, he's showed up to interviews in a hot air balloon, he created “invisible art” (which was just, well, air), and that's not even talking about all the strange short stories he's penned or the unique film projects he's been at the helm of. There's no doubt that Franco is a handsome guy, and there's no doubt that he's incredibly intriguing - perhaps that's why Hollywood still loves him, despite the fact that he's totally unpredictable at this point.
13 Tom Cruise
Ah, the couch jump heard around the world. Back when Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were one of the biggest celebrity couples - TomKat, obviously - Cruise just couldn't contain his excitement, and while he was being interviewed by Oprah on her show, found himself jumping up and down on her couch because he just couldn't contain his love and excitement. From some stars, it may come off as goofy and endearing. For Cruise, it just made the world wonder when on earth the A-Lister had gotten so weird. And then, of course, there's the whole Scientology thing. While everyone is entitled to follow whatever system of beliefs they desire, there's no doubt that Cruise has gotten into a lot of arguments over the years with some of his fellow celebrities over things like postpartum depression and the need for medication to help things like mental illness. Plus, there was just something strange about his whole relationship with Holmes. Tom Cruise is still snagging the lead role in action films, and he's still as fit as he was in his younger years, but there's no doubting he's a little strange.
12 Joaquin Phoenix
There's no doubt that, at times, Joaquin Phoenix can be quite charming. After all, he somehow managed to endear Johnny Cash to audiences in the legendary Walk The Line even at his worst moments. And given his unorthodox upbringing, it's not surprising that he's comfortable doing things a little bit differently than the average person - it was how he was raised. However, there's no doubt that Phoenix has had his strange moments. I mean, who can forget his appearance on Letterman where he turned up looking like he hadn't shaved in about four years, and announced he would be leaving the acting game in order to pursue a career in hip hop? Sure, it was later announced that his strange behavior was part of a mockumentary he was filming with Casey Affleck - but it seemed totally in character for Joaquin. Since then, he's snagged a few highly lauded roles, such as in the film Her, but honestly, we're kind of still waiting for that rap album.
11 Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber was so incredibly young when he got started in the music industry, and his fan base grew so quickly that, quite frankly, we'd be surprised if he ended up totally normal and well-adjusted. That's a lot to deal with before you even turn 18. Sure enough, while he started out as an adorable tween with an angelic voice, he eventually tried to shrug off that image and increase his street cred. For awhile, he got into trouble for his party boy behaviors, but lately, he's taken things to an entirely different - and entirely weirder - place. He's been spotted feeding squirrels, walking around barefoot, sitting in trees, and even decided to get a tattoo on his face. According to what some sources told TMZ, though, Bieber's behavior isn't a sign of him losing his marbles - he's apparently found himself and decided he needs to focus on nature and religion rather than on maintaining his party boy persona. Either way, he's still going to have fans who can't get enough of him.
10 Tilda Swinton
Tilda Swinton is an absolute powerhouse, and she's achieved the rare feat of being a darling of both the mainstream film world, with roles in films like the Chronicles of Narnia franchise and Burn After Reading, and the art house/indie film world. Oh, and she has a ton of classical theatre experience on her resume. There's no doubt that Swinton can pull off pretty much any role she desires, and there's no doubt that she has a certain androgynous beauty that audiences are drawn to, but at the end of the day, there's a weird vibe that she always seems to carry. There was also the story she shared of choosing not to speak for five years after she had a rough time at the boarding school she had been attending, so… there's that. She has also participated in performance art, tried her hand in the fashion world alongside the stylish Viktor & Rolf, and when she's not filming, lives in a remote Scottish town with her painter husband. I mean, her life is basically a movie.
9 Russell Crowe
In comparison to some of the individuals on this list, Russell Crowe isn't exactly the strangest. However, one thing is for sure - he seems to have trouble separating art from life. While Crowe has had tons of roles over the course of his career, he became known for playing tough guys such as Maximus in the film Gladiator and Officer White in L.A. Confidential. Apparently, playing men who love to brawl gave him a taste for violence, and he's since become infamous for his crazy temper. He's done everything from throwing a phone at a hotel concierge who wouldn't help him make a phone call (like he can't dial a phone?) to calling a producer in the middle of the night and threatening him, all because he thought his assistants were being treated unfairly. As he ages, Crowe is no longer the first in line to play roles that require a beefy male lead, and maybe that's a good thing.
8 Juliette Lewis
There's no doubt that Juliette Lewis is absolutely gorgeous, particularly if you like the gritty, rocker chick vibe that she's got going on. However, she's also a little bit… well, unusual. The first thing that leads many to classify her as a bit of a strange egg is the fact that she's involved in Scientology, the infamous group that celebrities like Tom Cruise are involved in. However, regardless of how outspoken she may be about her beliefs, there's another major reason that many think she's a bit wacky - her on-stage persona. While you may recognize her from her acting roles, Juliette Lewis has spent over a decade fronting her band, Juliette and the Licks - and it's not some kind of light folk band. Juliet and the Licks is as in your face as the name suggests, and both on stage and in interviews she's a constantly whirling tornado of energy.
7 Christian Bale
Over the years, Christian Bale has carved quite a reputation for himself thanks to his willingness to go above and beyond, to do things that most actors would not be willing to do, like shrink down to a skeleton for his role in The Machinist and then bulk up again to play Batman. However, his acting talent isn't the only reason Bale has received attention over the years. He's been arrested for allegedly assaulting his mother and sister, he's often fairly awkward and strange when he's on camera as himself and not as a character, and of course, he was captured delivering an expletive-filled rant on the set of Terminator: Salvation. Anyone who has seen Bale when he's all cleaned up and rocking an expensive suit knows he's definitely a handsome guy, but there's no doubt that someone who exists on such an intense level is a little bit wacko, as his outbursts indicate.
6 Johnny Depp
From his days as a television heartthrob on 21 Jump Street to his days as a dreamy movie star playing characters like Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and Edward Scissorhands in Edward Scissorhands, Johnny Depp has earned his fair share of fans over the years. However, through it all, he's always been a bit of an oddball. After all, that was part of his appeal, his persona - rather than the clean-cut, carefully coached A-List dreamboats, he was an artsier film star, one who had a bit of character. However, as he ages, that quirky charm has turned a bit into weirdness. Sure, he's still sexy when he's cleaned up, but there have been enough negative rumours and criticism surrounding him and his strange behavior to relegate him to the wacko camp. I mean, even his clothing choices, which were sort of charming in a bohemian way when he was younger are starting to look a bit too weird nowadays.
5 Kanye West
There's no doubt that Kanye West has done a lot for Kim Kardashian's career. Sure, she managed to build an empire with her family on the somewhat shaky foundation of a sex tape and a reality show, proving to the world just how much money being media-savvy can make you. However, before she was part of Kimye, she was just a wealthy reality star - not a global superstar like she is today. Kanye helped switch her California girl outfits to haute couture, and helped elevate her brand. He can't exactly say the same for himself, though. While the rapper had many fans when he first stepped onto the scene, the same fans have increasingly been scratching their heads at his antics lately. He's always been outspoken, but his rant on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in May of this year was so bizarre that audiences could do nothing more than stare and watch. He's allegedly bankrupt, he's constantly telling the world how he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, and he's just pretty dang wacky.
4 Helena Bonham Carter
While Hollywood's strangest couple, Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter, are no longer together, for many years they were as inseparable in their work lives as in their personal lives. Bonham Carter had a certain quality that was the perfect fit for Burton's crazy, offbeat characters, and she was cast in film after film that he was at the helm of. While Helena Bonham Carter has played a few mainstream roles over the course of her acting career, she tends to favour characters that are dark and a little bit unhinged - characters like Marla Singer in Fight Club and Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter film franchise. Surely you can't judge an actress to be wacky simply because of the characters she plays, though, right? Well, yes - unless she's Helena Bonham Carter, in which case life imitates art time and time again. She shows up in outfits that are more costume party than chic, she brings up bizarre tidbits of information in interviews, and is just overall a little weird - and despite all that, fans of the whole gothic look will definitely still find her gorgeous.
3 Angelina Jolie
Nowadays, Angelina Jolie has a bit of a Mother Theresa persona going on, travelling the world with her super-sized family donating her time and money to worthy humanitarian causes. And even though she's older than when she first stepped into the entertainment industry, she's definitely still absolutely stunning. However, before she was doing humanitarian work, she was Hollywood's original sexy wacko. She wrote her then-partner's name across a t-shirt in her own blood, she wore a necklace with a vial of blood around her neck, she French kissed her brother on the red carpet, and more. Angelina Jolie wasn't just the standard wild child - she was a little bit bonkers. Having children seems to have tamed Jolie a bit - after all, who has energy for crazy behaviors when you're trying to take care of six children? - but that doesn't mean she won't bust out some unusual behavior again eventually, throwing things back to old school Angie.
2 Miley Cyrus
Once upon a time, Miley Cyrus was a sweet, long-haired brunette singer and actress who became famous for playing the sweet-as-pie pop star Hannah Montana on the Disney channel's hit show. And then, something happened. Many Disney stars go through a period of rebellion where they turn to hard partying in order to shed their family-friendly Disney star image, but Miley took things to a whole new level. All of a sudden, she chopped off her hair and dyed it platinum blonde, she started going out on stage in barely-there outfits that left virtually nothing to the imagination, she twerked all over married men on stage (we're talking about the Robin Thicke/MTV Video Music Awards situation back in 2013), she started rocking a weird knotted hair style and throwing up middle fingers left and right and dancing on stage with midgets and stuffed animals… I mean, we're puzzled even thinking about it. Whatever the reason for the drastic change, there's no doubting that Cyrus is a bit of a wacko - no matter how insane her body looks in her skimpy outfits.
1 Amanda Bynes
Ah, the child star curse. Amanda Bynes got her start by showing off her comedic side on The Amanda Show, where she played larger than life characters in a family-friendly context. She wasn't into the party scene, blossomed into an absolutely stunning teenager, and added film after film to her list of successful teen movies and rom coms. And then, something changed. Bynes began getting coverage for her strange behavior rather than for the films she was working on. She retired from acting, then announced she was coming back. She rocked a bright blue wig, she threw a bong out the window, she was arrested for DUI, she started tweeting absolutely insane things at other celebrities, she started a fire in the driveway of a home… the list is endless. Though she's said many negative things about her own appearance, she remains absolutely stunning, and thankfully seems to be making a recovery. We're hoping she undergoes a Britney Spears-like transformation where she goes from rock bottom to rocking it once more.
