15 Answers You Want From The New Heath Ledger Documentary
When Heath Ledger passed away in January of 2008, it was definitely a shock to the pop culture world. Chances are, you loved the actor in movies like A Knight's Tale, Brokeback Mountain, A Dark Knight, and oh yeah, he was pretty epic in 10 Things I Hate About You. You thought he was super beautiful, you loved his hot accent, and you were excited to see where his career would take him. It was incredibly sad to read about this death and you have probably never gotten over how tragic it is. There's just something about this story that sticks in your mind, no matter how many years have passed. It turns out that other people can't stop thinking about Heath Ledger. A documentary about the late actor called I Am Heath Ledger is premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23rd (and said to be airing on Spike in May). Before you get the chance to watch the movie, you have a few questions. Okay, you have more than a few. Here are 15 answers you want from the new Heath Ledger documentary.
15 How Did He REALLY Die?
You know that Heath's official cause of death was a cardiac arrest (aka a heart attack) thanks to the prescription drugs that were in his system. There has also been talk of him using several other drugs and the idea that these things can't really be mixed. You would really like to know how he REALLY died. Sure, it was a heart attack and it was drugs, but was there something else? Was it actually accidental or something else? Was he an alcoholic too? You hate to think about this stuff because you were a huge fan (and still are). You don't want to go down such a miserable, depressing path. You know that if you got the answer to this question, it would be super sad and disturbing, and you might have wished that you had never thought about this in the first place. But it still feels like an important question to ask.
14 How Long Had He Been Using Drugs?
You know that Heath Ledger was using prescription drugs, but how long was he on them? And was he on other drugs, too (aka non-prescription ones)? Was this a more recent thing right before his death or had he been using them for years and years? You hate to think of that because he was going to get married and he had an adorable daughter, and you know that he was a really good guy. You definitely don't think that he wanted to abandon his family. It's become a cliche at this point that when you're a part of the whole Hollywood scene, you get really caught up in drugs and drinking and that whole party lifestyle. You hate to think that Heath got all caught up in that too, but it seems like that is what happened, at least to some extent. You're wondering just what was up with his drug use and you're pretty sure that this question will be answered.
13 Was He Depressed?
Drugs and depression tend to go hand in hand. Maybe you're depressed and so you turn to drugs to make yourself feel better… or maybe you become depressed thanks to your drug use. It's kind of a chicken/egg type of situation (although a more upsetting and disturbing one). You would like to know if Heath Ledger was depressed. It definitely sounds like he could have been because of his lifestyle and the fact that he apparently never slept (more on that soon). But then there's the fact that he had a family and was doing so well with his acting career. You're not naive and innocent. You get that you can have all the good things in the world like a family and a great career that you love and still be sad all the time. You totally understand that. You just feel really badly that his life ended this way and that he wasn't able to stick around longer.
12 Were There Any Films He Was Thinking About Doing?
You know that before his death, Heath Ledger completed his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight, which came out in 2008 after he had already passed away. He won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for that role which was definitely well-deserved. You would like to know if there were any films that Heath was thinking about doing. These don't have to be films that he had already signed onto. They could be movies that he had been given the script for and had been considering. You get that this probably won't be in the movie because maybe it doesn't seem quite as relevant as some of the other issues, but you still would like to know. You mostly remember Heath as a really talented actor devoted to his craft, so you would love to know more about the end of his acting career and whether there were any plans in place for his future roles.
11 How Much Did He Really Sleep?
In a lot of interviews about the documentary, Heath's friend Matt Amato has said that Heath barely slept. Apparently he slept a few hours a night (as in two hours) and even had nights where his insomnia was so horrible that he was up all night. His ex fiance Michelle Williams has even said the same thing. You would like to know how much (or how little) he actually slept. Was his insomnia a chronic thing? How much sleep did he get every single night? Did he always have a hard time falling and staying asleep, or was that just on random nights? Did this go on for years, or was his insomnia the worst right before his untimely and tragic death? You're pretty sure that this is one question that you're going to get the answer to, and you're definitely hoping that the answer isn't as horrible as you're expecting.
10 What's Up With His Will?
When someone passes away, there's the whole issue of their will, and sometimes that becomes a really confusing and complicated thing. Apparently there have been some issues with Heath Ledger's will. He wanted to make sure that Michelle Williams and their daughter Matilda got a lot of his money, which makes sense since they were a family, and which proves that he was a really good, decent person. His family were unsure because Heath signed a will back in 2003 that left his money to his parents and his siblings… but didn't account for Michelle and Matilda. His family thinks that there is another will somewhere that would leave the majority of his money to Matilda. This is definitely super interesting and you would love to know what's up with his will (or wills). You're not sure if this will come up in the documentary, but you think it's an important part of the story.
9 Did He Have Any Regrets?
Everyone tries to live their life to the fullest so there are no regrets. It's pretty sad to realize that there were tons of things that you wanted to do and dreams that you wanted to follow through on and places that you wanted to go… but that stuff just didn't end up going down. You wonder if Heath Ledger lived a life of absolutely zero regrets or if he had done some things that he wished he hadn't. You figure that he maybe regretted his drug use since that must have interfered with his life in some pretty negative ways. After all, that's the reason that he died. But you also know that he did live a pretty good life since he had made his acting dreams come true, he had fallen in love a few times (or at least that's what you gather), and he had a daughter. You just wonder if he thought that there should have been more to his life in particular or life in general.
8 Did He Have Any Plans?
Did Heath want to have more children? Did he want to get married? Was he planning on writing some movies or becoming a director or a producer? Did he want to write a book or become involved in some other kind of creative pursuit? You're never going to know… unless this is discussed in the documentary. And you're really hoping that you'll learn more about the late actor and what his life plans were. Sure, there's always the possibility that he didn't talk about this stuff with anyone and that this won't be a part of the movie at all, but you also get the feeling that he was a dreamer. You feel like you can just tell that about him. Maybe some of his old friends and fellow actors that he worked with will be interviewed in the movie and will talk about that. You would definitely be interested in knowing his plans.
7 What Was His Favorite Role?
Sure, this might seem like it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, and yet it totally matters. Because Heath Ledger was an absolutely amazing actor. And you were a big fan. So you definitely want to know what his favorite role is. You figure that this must come up in the documentary, right? He must have been interviewed about this topic at least once or twice, and maybe his friends will talk about it too. Okay, so what you really want to know is if his favorite role was 10 Things About You since that's one of your all-time favorite movies. Is that selfish? Probably. You don't care, though. You think that this movie is a total gift to humanity and that Heath really makes the entire film work. It wouldn't be the same if someone else had been in that role instead. Now you're definitely going to re-watch this movie ASAP.
6 Did He Hate Being Famous?
According to some early press about the documentary I Am Heath Ledger, he wasn't super into the whole being famous thing. You can definitely see that happening since most people don't exactly love this part of doing what they love. It's like being an actor or singer or whatever else is the best thing ever and your dream… but the whole being famous thing? It's definitely the dark part of it. You would be interested in finding out more about whether or not Heath hated being famous. You would also want to know if this changed over the years and if he started hating it even more right before his death. You figure that this will definitely come up in the movie since this must have been something that he talked about on a regular basis. When you're in a situation that you don't necessarily want to be in, you're going to spill about it, at least to those close to you like your best friends and your family.
5 Did He Know He Was Going To Die?
This may sound like a super dark and disturbing question, and yet you really want the answer to this. The truth is that in the last few years of his life, Heath Ledger was in some pretty dark roles and it seemed like his mind was taking him to some pretty dark places. People have talked about how he had a tough time sleeping and that he had "manic days." He was also a drug addict in the indie film Candy which is one of the darkest and saddest movies out there. It's about a couple who realize that they love a certain type of illegal substance even more than they love each other. He does a really amazing job in the role… and it also seems like it hits kind of close to home. That's how convincing he is here. You're not saying that he was taking the hard stuff, you're just saying that you wonder how much he could relate to this character.
4 Were He And Michelle Williams Going To Reconcile?
It's super sad that Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams broke up in the fall of 2007, and you have to wonder if they were going to get back together. He only passed away shortly after that -- in January of 2008 -- so maybe they had been talking and considering giving their romance another shot. Again, you're not sure if the documentary will address this question, but you would love to have the answer. Of course, the answer that you're looking for is a big fat yes. You would love to have known that they were going to get back together because you think that they were a really lovely couple. Yes, that's sad to think about as well, because if they were going to reconcile, the fact that he died is even worse since Michelle would have had to deal with losing her current partner instead of her ex fiance (but of course it would have been horrible in both cases).
3 Does Michelle Williams Still Love Him?
You would like to know if Michelle Williams is still in love with Heath Ledger. You have the feeling that the answer is yes because you don't think that you ever get over a great love story like theirs. Add the fact that she's been dealing with some major grief and the answer is probably still yes. That is just not super easy to get over and maybe you never actually do move on completely. You're not sure if she's going to be in the movie -- you think that she definitely should be because she's a huge part of his life -- but if she didn't want to get involved because it was too hard, you would totally respect that decision. You know that grief is a tricky thing, even several years later, and that there is no right or wrong way to deal with the loss of a loved one. You would just love to see her in the movie because you're a fan.
2 Does His Daughter Remember Him?
Matilda Williams is 11 years old and would have been super young when Heath Ledger passed away. You would like to know if she remembers him at all… and you're also wondering if she's going to be in the movie. On the one hand, you would think that she would be because she's an integral part of the story. On the other hand, you totally get that maybe appearing in a film about her late father might not be in her best interest. It would definitely be sad and make things even more difficult. You hope that she remembers him even a little bit because just thinking about a daughter never knowing their dad and not even having a single memory of him is really, really sad. It's too sad to even picture. You know that she has an amazing mother in Michelle Williams, but there's nothing like having both your parents around.
1 What Was Mary-Kate Olsen Doing There?
Everyone knows that there's one strange detail about the day that Heath Ledger died: he was with Mary-Kate Olsen. Did she call the cops? How did he get the drugs? Was she doing drugs, too? Were they dating? Super serious? Sleeping together? Just friends? You would really like to know what was going on that day. You totally get that this is a super private thing and that you really have no right to know the truth… and yet you still really want to know. This is just one of those stories that you can't possibly look away from and that you always want to know more and more. This is what makes his death really mysterious… and it's probably one of the things that make the idea of a documentary about him really appealing. But even if you never find out what was up between Heath Ledger and Mary-Kate Olsen, you're still going to watch the movie and miss the actor that was.
