15 Bizarre Celeb Couples We Never Understood
There's nothing more gratifying to a pop culture junkie than hearing about a new celebrity couple. It seems only natural that two rising pop stars would pair up or that a beautiful actress would fall in love with her handsome co-star. Although there are plenty of celebrity power couples that make total sense, every now and again a duo emerges that makes you scratch your head.
They say opposites attract, and that could not be more true for these celebs. These couples might seem like they have nothing in common, but apparently, they know the secret to a long lasting relationship. Considering the high rate of breakups and divorces in Hollywood, maybe more celebs should consider dating someone unexpected! Let's take a look at some of our favorite celebrity couples who beat all odds and are still going strong with their partners despite their differences in age, careers, and public personas.
15 Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth
Miley Cyrus is the ultimate pop star rebel. She completely broke away from her Hannah Montana Disney character persona in 2012 when she cut off her long locks and released her notorious Bangerz album. Liam Hemsworth, on the other hand, got his start in Australian soap operas and has maintained a relatively clean image. When Miley and Liam first got together in 2009, they seemed like a natural fit. They met co-starring in The Last Song, back when Miley was still a Disney actress. Since then, their relationship has seen it's ups and downs. They broke up two times in 2010, (yes two times!) but managed to go steady once more in 2011. The couple announced their engagement in 2012, only to call it off the following year. Many people speculate that Miley's controversial image was to blame for their break up. After all, she was twerking on Robin Thicke pretty hard during her infamous VMA's performance that year. Despite their on and off again relationship, Miley and Liam seem to be as in love as they ever were. They got engaged once more in 2016 and are still together.
14 Sacha Baron Cohen & Isla Fisher
Who would have thought that Borat could land a total babe like Isla Fisher? Okay, so Sacha Baron Cohen is not the same guy as his controversial characters, but many people were still surprised when they found out about this duo. The couple first met in 2002 at a party. At the time Sacha was well known for playing the very inappropriate 'Ali G' and Isla was still trying to make a name for herself as an actress. They got engaged two years later. They keep their personal lives pretty private, but we know they tied the knot in 2010 in Paris with a traditional Jewish ceremony. They now have two daughters and a son and their marriage is still going strong. The comedic couple can be seen on the red carpet with Isla often supporting her husband's shenanigans - she even helped him sneak an Ali G costume into the Oscars!
13 Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton
When it was announced that Gwen Stefani would be a coach on The Voice, we were all pretty excited to see the punk rock princess mentor fresh talent. Nobody could have predicted that she would be dating Blake Shelton shortly after, especially considering the fact that he was married to Miranda Lambert when Gwen first joined the show. The two coaches had quite a bit of chemistry, but they just seemed too odd of a couple for most of us to take it too seriously. In July 2015, Blake confirmed his divorce with Miranda and a few months later, his relationship with Gwen was announced. The country star and pop rocker may seem like a weird pair, but they are constantly gushing about each other to the press and on social media. They have both written songs about each other including “Make Me Like You” and “Go Ahead And Break My Heart”.
12 Mary-Kate Olsen & Olivier Sarkozy
Mary-Kate Olsen stole our hearts as sweet little Michelle Tanner on Full House. Along with her twin sister Ashley, Mary-Kate was one of the most successful child actresses in the 90s and starred in so many films! As with many child stars, it's hard to imagine her all grown up, let alone married to a French banker 17 years her senior. The two started dating back in 2012 when she was 25 and he was 42. Olivier is an extremely wealthy financier and happens to be the brother of a former French president. Mary-Kate has moved on from being an actress to a fashion designer and is a lot more under the radar these days. Olivier proposed in 2014 with a ring that cost over $80,000, and the two were married a year later in Manhattan at a small ceremony with 50 guests. In case you're wondering, no one from the cast of Full House was invited.
11 Christina Hendricks & Geoffrey Arend
Christina Hendricks is one of the sexiest women in Hollywood, so you might have assumed she would be dating a popular movie star, but she's not. Instead, she's dating low profile actor Geoffrey Arend, who you may recognize from 500 Days of Summer. Christina opened up to Cosmo about her relationship, and she feels like she knew he was 'the one' early on. In fact, she expressed her love for him by letting him know she would love to start a family with him. Taking about having babies might freak out most men, but if you look like Christina Hendricks, it doesn't! Christina was actually introduced to Geoffrey by Mad Men co-star Vincent Kartheiser at a dinner party back in 2007. She found him intriguing and went home and Googled him that night, as all smart women do. The two got married in Manhattan two years later and are still a steady couple.
10 Hayden Panettiere & Wladimir Klitschko
Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko definitely turn heads when they're together. That's because the petite actress stands at just 5'1 while her man looms over her at 6'6. She first met the Ukrainian professional boxer in 2008 at a book launch. In addition to their polar opposite appearance and careers, they also have a 12 year age difference. Surprisingly, she made the first move. She went over to him and said: “You're huge”. His response? “You're tiny.” From there, the two remained friends for a year before taking it to the next level. In 2011, the pair split up amicably as they struggled with their long distance relationship. By 2013, they were back at it and were engaged shortly after rekindling their romance. The two have a daughter who was born in 2014 - who knows how tall she will be! No weddings plans have been announced yet, but the couple doesn't seem to be in a rush to head down the aisle.
9 Woody Allen & Soon-Yi Previn
This is certainly the creepiest relationship on our list considering Woody Allen was sort of Soon-Yi's father and is now her husband. Let's back up… Woody Allen was dating Mia Farrow, Soon-Yi's adoptive mother, in 1992 when Mia stumbled upon nude photographs of Soon-Yi in Woody's home. Woody admitted that he had been having an affair with Soon-Yi, and not so surprisingly Mia and Woody broke up. There are plenty of strange details to be discussed about the relationship between Woody, now 81, and Soon-Yi, now 46, but shockingly, they are still together. They got married in 1997 and even adopted two children of their own. Soon-Yi claims that Woody was never a father figure to her, despite the fact that Woody was the adoptive father of two of Mia's adoptive children at the time, making him Soon-Yi's siblings' father. All in all, this relationship is complicated, to say the least.
8 Anna Faris & Chris Pratt
You might be surprised to learn that Anna Faris, most known for her comedic charm in the Scary Movie films, is married to A-list movie star Chris Pratt. The couple first met on the set of Take Me Home Tonight in 2007. Anna had been married to little-known actor Ben Indra and had filed for divorce the same year she met Chris. The two started dating soon after and got engaged in 2008. A few months later they tied the knot in Bali, Indonesia. Chris's career blew up recently but that doesn't seem to bother Anna - the couple is going steady despite Chris's hectic schedule. Every now and then Chris makes an appearance on Anna's podcast, Unqualified, and the actress mentions her strong relationship with her husband in many episodes. Their son, Jack, also makes the occasional appearance on the podcast. Chris has gone through quite the physical transformation through their marriage, but we know Anna loves him the same regardless of what shape he's in.
7 Enrique Iglesias & Anna Kournikova
Spanish pop sensation Enrique Iglesias and Russian tennis player Anna Kournikova may seem like a random pair, but they have been in a relationship since 2001. The blonde bombshell was in Enrique's music video for Escape, where the two had some pretty steamy scenes. The couple is extremely private about their relationship - it usually makes headlines when they post a picture together on social media. In recent photos, Anna has been seen wearing a rather large diamond ring and wedding band on her left ring finger. We aren't sure if they got secretly married, but we are sure that the couple is still going strong. They have reportedly invested roughly $26 million towards their custom built waterfront mansion in Miami. It, of course, has a huge tennis court for Anna to play in. The couple is also frequently in the midst of baby rumors, although nothing has been confirmed by either party.
6 Heidi Montag & Spencer Pratt
Yep, these two are still together! They were our favorite couple to hate on The Hills, but Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are truly in love with each other. They first met at a club, where Spencer's moves sparked Heidi's interest. If you watched the show, you know that the majority of Heidi's friends, including Lauren Conrad, thought Spencer was insane and did not approve of her dating him. Eventually, Heidi distanced herself from her friends to be with her man, and it seems like she has no regrets. Heidi's appearance has changed significantly since she first met Spencer due to several plastic surgeries, but her feelings for Spencer have stayed the same. The couple got married in 2009 and the ceremony was filmed for MTV. After The Hills got canceled, Heidi and Spencer tried to stay relevant, but ultimately did not. The two have gone through financial struggles and have downgraded their lavish lifestyle quite a bit.
5 Nick & Vanessa Lachey
There was a time when we thought Newlyweds stars Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson would be together forever, but it turns out that Nick was destined to be with Vanessa Minnillo, now known as Vanessa Lachey. The two had met when Vanessa hosted Total Request Live and Nick's band, 98 Degrees, were guests, but they first hit it off in 2006 when Vanessa starred in the What's Left of Me music video. Ironically, the song was said to be about Nick's divorce from Jessica. The couple was always pretty open about their relationship - they even shared a live kiss on an MTV New Year's Eve special in 2007. After a brief break up in 2009, Nick and Vanessa got back together and were engaged a year later. Their 2011 wedding took place on Richard Branson's private island and was filmed for a TLC special, Nick and Vanessa's Dream Wedding. The happily married couple are now parents to two sons and a daughter.
4 David & Victoria Beckham
We could all learn a lesson in love from Posh Spice, who we know now as Victoria Beckham. Her relationship with professional soccer player David Beckham has stood the test of the time. The couple first met in 1996 at a charity soccer match and according to Victoria, it was love at first sight. David did not go wasting her precious time - he proposed in 1998 with some serious bling. He even got a matching engagement band for himself! The cost of both rings set him back roughly £200,000. The pair gathered a lot of attention from the British press, mainly for attending parties in matching outfits. They welcomed their first son in 1999 and got married a few months later. Posh Spice was married in a castle, of course, and the Spice Girls were in attendance. Since then the couple has had two more sons and a daughter.
3 Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel
Most of us are still not over how perfect Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are as a couple. They make the list for being ridiculously flawless. Justin has come a long way since N'SYNC, and Jessica has come a long way since 7th Heaven. So, how did these two get their relationship started? In 2007 the couple met through mutual friends, and Justin had to ask Jessica out a few times before she said yes - shocking, I know. The pair was often seen out together at events but surprisingly had an amicable split in 2011. They decided to give their relationship a second shot, and have been going strong ever since. They got engaged in 2014 and were married a few months later. They tied the knot in Italy where Justin sang a song he wrote just for the occasion to his new wife. In 2015, they welcomed their first child.
2 Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden
Actress Cameron Diaz and rocker Benji Madden are two people you probably wouldn't have matched up, but the married couple seems very much in love. The pair first met in 2014 through Cameron's pal Nicole Richie, who is married to Benji's twin, Joel Madden. Cameron admits that she was instantly attracted to Benji, and we're assuming he felt the same about her. The couple didn't wait long to move forward - they were married in January 2015, just 8 months after they first met! Their wedding took place in their Beverly Hills home and the guest list included many celebs, including Drew Barrymore and Gwyneth Paltrow. Soon after the wedding, Benji proclaimed his love for his new wife by tattooing her name on his chest. Cameron, 44, has had her share of failed relationships, but she feels confident that Benji, 37, is the one. Cameron's friends and family love Benji, and we're pretty sure this marriage will last.
1 Freddie Prinze Jr. & Sarah Michelle Gellar
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar may be Hollywood's longest lasting couple. Okay, that's not quite true, but they have been together since 2000. They met three years earlier on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Their first date was an accident - they were supposed to meet a friend for dinner who wound up canceling, but the two decided to continue on with the night without him. Sarah impressed Freddie with her willingness to eat a full meal, something most of the actresses Freddie had previously gone out with would never do. The couple believes that being friends for a few years before dating helped them build a strong relationship. They got married in 2002 in Mexico and are the parents to a son and a daughter. They are open about the work that goes into a successful marriage and admits that it takes effort to keep a relationship strong.
