It can be easy to forget that celebrities are just regular people like the rest of us. We see them so often in the pages of magazines and on red carpets and performing, whether on the silver screen or on a stadium stage, that we tend to think of them as larger-than-life characters whose lives are perfect. After all, when you have a glamour squad making sure you look amazing at all times, likely an assistant to schedule your days, a trainer to make sure you look amazing, and a lawyer on call to squish any rumours the tabloids start to circulate, what on earth could go wrong?

Well, it turns out, a lot. Though celebrities do have several advantages that the rest of us regular folks don't, at the end of the day, they're just normal humans prone to tripping, bodily functions, word vomit and more. And thanks to the internet and proliferation of paparazzi nowadays, no moment of a celebrity's life is ever really forgotten- especially not the juicy, embarrassing ones that they wish the public would just forget about.

15 Ashlee Simpson's lip sync jig

Look, the public isn't stupid - most people know that many pop stars tend to lip sync during certain physically demanding performances because, well, it's tough to get a perfect vocal when you're busting out flawless choreography and putting on a whole spectacle. However, most singers worth their salt will sing live if it's just a performance where they're standing at the microphone. That is, except Ashlee Simpson. Back when she was starting to climb up the pop charts, she was invited to be the musical guest on SNL (this was way, way back in 2004). When it was time to perform, she got ready - and something happened with the sound, the vocals came too early without Simpson opening her mouth, and everyone figured out she was faking it. As if that wasn't embarrassing enough, she responded by doing some kind of weird jig until the camera finally cut away. We still cringe at the thought of that weird dance.

14 Fergie peeing her pants on stage

Sometimes, certain costume choices on stage can be a little bit difficult - if you're wearing a certain shade of pants and end up sweating like crazy during a physically intense performance, you may get weird butt sweat marks or strange sweat spots somewhere. However, in Fergie's case, her weird spots weren't sweat - they were exactly what you would think. She needed to use the bathroom but just didn't have time before she had to be on stage, and once you're on stage, you can't exactly sprint off in the middle of a song and put everything on hold. She thought she could just hold it, but soon found out that her bladder wasn't about to be ignored - so she peed herself on stage. Yikes!

Every celebrity handles talk show appearances a little bit differently. Some are fairly reserved and polite, just there to do their jobs - pleasant, but nothing crazy. Others are totally in their element, joking with the host and having a really great time. And then, there's Tom Cruise. Shortly after he started dating Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Zac Efron has managed to make the transition from teen Disney heartthrob to a full-fledged Hollywood babe. His fans may have matured a bit, but he still elicits the same types of reactions as when he first got his start in the High School Musical series. However, even for someone with the reputation of being popular with the ladies, what happened on the red carpet at the premiere for The Lorax was pretty embarrassing. He was walking along in front of tons of cameras and media, posing and smiling and doing everything you typically do on a red carpet. Then, he reached into his pocket, and when he withdrew his hand, a condom flew out and landed on the ground. He picked it up again at lightning speed and the moment was over in just a few seconds, but thanks to all those cameras around, it was immortalized on film forever and Efron was majorly teased on the internet for the embarrassing moment. Well… at least he was being safe?

11 Janet Jackson's Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction

There have been many, many musical legends who performed at the Super Bowl halftime show, but there's one show in particular that most people still remember - and it wasn't because the musical guests were that much better than in other years. It was because of an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake took to the stage for the halftime performance, and did a respectable set - and then towards the end, Timberlake pulled part of Jackson's costume aside, as was laid out in the choreography - the only problem was, instead of doing what it was supposed to, the costume apparently had some sort of malfunction and ended up revealing Jackson's bare breast. Look, we get it - not every actor or actress has a super simple name. Sure, some stars born with difficult names opt to change them a bit, or go by a stage name, in order to make their lives a little bit easier. But, if you're a respected celebrity, you kind of assume that someone will go to the trouble to ask your publicist how to pronounce your name properly if you're doing something as momentous as performing at an awards show. You would think, right? Well, that certainly didn't happen before Idina Menzel's Academy Awards performance. Actor John Travolta was responsible for introducing the powerhouse singer who was about to perform, but instead of properly pronouncing her name, he pronounced it in a truly bizarre fashion - “Adele Dazeem.” I mean, Idina Menzel's name isn't the easiest, but you can pretty much figure it out phonetically - people joked about the flub for days afterwards, and SNL even spoofed the embarrassing moment.

9 Jennifer Lawrence's Oscar trip

No matter how many awards you've won over the years, it's still a pretty big deal to get up on stage and accept one - especially something as prestigious as an Oscar. When you're a performer who is in the earlier stages of their career, it's particularly momentous. So, when Jennifer Lawrence snagged an Oscar win, she was totally excited for her big moment - she stood up in her gorgeous white dress, headed towards the stage, and as she was going up the stairs absolutely face planted. Like, sprawled across the steps. Luckily, Lawrence is a known goofball, and just managed to shrug it off and continue on her way, and people just cheered even louder for her win. However, let's be honest - at the end of the day, when she got back in her limo with her award in hand, she probably wished she had made it up the stairs without that embarrassing little moment.

8 Tara Reid's prolonged nip slip

Tara Reid was once everyone's favourite all-American blonde, a staple in teen flicks like the iconic American Pie series. However, as the years went on, she had her fair share of drama - she got super skinny and got a few strange plastic surgery procedures that made the world raise its eyebrows a little bit. There was no moment as embarrassing as the nip slip incident, though. Reid was on the red carpet for an event, rocking a low cut dress, and as she was smiling for the cameras and posing just like she would for any other event, one of her breasts went rogue and escaped the dress - and, because of her plastic surgery reducing some of the sensitivity in that area, she didn't even feel it. So, unlike other stars' slips which they catch almost immediately, Reid stood there, exposed, for quite a long time before an assistant materialized and quickly covered her up again. Oops.

No one expects stars to be professional athletes. In fact, it's usually a pleasant surprise when a celebrity has more skill than you might have expected. 50 Cent was the total opposite. When he threw the opening pitch at a Met's game in 2014, people figured it would just be an average pitch - but the strange, wandering pitch he threw was so horrendous that it was actually put on a Topps baseball card in memory of such an iconic moment (for the wrong reasons). If you know that you'll be tasked with doing something like throwing a pitch in front of a packed stadium, uh… maybe try a few practice throws at home first? There are a lot of people watching, after all.

6 Ariana Grande's doughnut shop antics

No star wants to be considered a diva - that's the kiss of death, because with so many sweet and humble stars out there, who would want to go to the extra effort of dealing with someone's crazy attitude? Well, though her vocal ability is definitely incredible, Ariana Grande has had a few diva rumours floating around through the years, and there was one embarrassing moment that no one will ever forget. Back in 2015, the petite singer went to a doughnut shop to pick up a few sweet treats - but instead of buying a box, she reached out and licked a doughnut before putting it back. Uh… gross? Then, as if that weren't bad enough, she later proclaimed that “I hate Americans. I hate America.” Everything was captured on camera, so she ended up looking offensive and totally disrespectful for the way she treated that shop and its products. However, this blonde moment that Jessica Simpson experienced in an episode of Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica is something that people still remember - even though the episode in question aired in 2003, nearly 15 years ago! The blonde pop star was eating Chicken of the Sea tuna out of the can, and she becomes legitimately confused about whether she is in fact eating tuna or if she's eating chicken. You know, because the brand name has the word chicken in it. First of all - you would assume that at 20-something years old she knew what chicken tasted like. Second, you would assume that she would get chickens “of the sea” meant that the product in the can was some type of creature found in the ocean. It was just a cringe-worthy moment that had everyone questioning how on earth she had even functioned until that point.

4 Christina Aguilera's melting self tanner

No one would deny that Christina Aguilera has an absolutely incredible voice - I mean, that woman's range and lung capacity is bananas. So when music legend Etta James passed away and they were looking for someone to sing at her funeral, it only made sense to pick another powerhouse musician to do her justice - Christina Aguilera was totally the right choice. And her vocal performance was, in fact, amazing. However, everyone was distracted by something else that was going on in that moment. While she was singing, people saw a weird, slightly brownish trickle going down her leg. People speculated about what on earth it could be, and luckily, it wasn't the most embarrassing option (we don't even want to think about it). It turned out that she had applied self tanner and it was streaking as she began to sweat under those heavy lights. Still - yikes! Better to have just waited until later to bronze up.

3 Madonna's cape mishap

At this point, Madonna has probably spent more years of her life on stage than off it. She's managed to carve a career that spanned decades, and she shows no signs of slowing down - you have to respect that. However, even a seasoned pro like her, who has been in countless world tours and performances, can have an embarrassing moment on stage, as the public found out in 2015. The pop star was performing at the Brit Awards with a fully choreographed, dramatic routine complete with a long cape as part of her costume. One of the dancers was likely supposed to tug the cape off and allow her to continue onto the next part of the choreography, but something didn't quite function the way it was supposed to, and the dancer ended up literally yanking Madge down a flight of stairs on stage. The moment immediately began spreading on the internet like wildfire.

2 Beyoncé's fan disaster

When it comes to on stage productions, no one does it quite like pop stars. Sure, rock stars can put on a great show, but the amount of elements that go into a pop performance are insane. As she was belting out “Halo” in front of a fan designed to keep things on stage windblown and dreamy, she got a little bit too close to the fan - and her hair got sucked into it! She kept singing while people materialized from the wings and tried to detach the singer from the whizzing fan.

1 Louis Tomlinson's temporary amnesia

When you're a musician, there are certain things that are just part of your job - like remembering the lyrics to the song you're supposed to perform. I mean, it seems simple - if neurosurgeons are supposed to remember everything about the brain and how it works when their scalpel is buried deep in someone's skull, surely a singer will be able to memorize a few lines, right? Well, unless that someone is Louis Tomlinson. In a 2013 performance with One Direction, Tomlinson was supposed to finish off the last few versus of the Wheatus tune “Teenage Dirtbag,” which the group as performing during a concert. The song got to his part, he had the microphone in hand, and he totally, completely blanked. He didn't remember any words. You see it happen to amateurs on American Idol, but who would have thought it could happen to someone whose job is literally to sing the songs written for him to perform?
