15 Facts About The Raunchiest Teen Drama, REVEALED
Riverdale has been one of the most popular and fun 2017 shows (well, at least so far). If you grew up reading all about the love triangle between Betty, Archie, and Veronica, then you were probably incredibly psyched to learn that the beloved Archie comic book series was going to become a television show. Would the love triangle still exist? What would the town of Riverdale actually look like? Would the actors would look like the people that you had pictured in your mind? And would the supernatural and creepy tone of the show work out? Thankfully, you had nothing to worry about and the resulting teen drama is absolutely amazing. Of course, there is always more to the story, and there are so many behind-the-scenes facts to learn about any television show. Here are 15 things you didn't know about Riverdale.
15 Camila Mendes Had Never Been On A Show Before
The actress who plays Veronica Lodge (and does such an amazing job at that) has actually never been on a show before. Yes, really. She's so talented and so great that it seems like she has been doing this for decades, but that's not actually the case. She is only 22 years old and has recently finished studying at New York University. Talk about a dream come true. It's definitely pretty cool that her first television acting role is as such a popular and loved character. This will absolutely set her on a great career path and you probably can't wait to see where she goes next. Of course, you're planning on continuing to watch her as Veronica for as long as you can, and you think that this show should never end. There is enough drama to go around and since the show got a second season renewal pretty much as soon as the first few episodes started airing, it seems like it's in for a very long life.
14 Camila Mendes And Cole Sprouse Were At College Together
These two were both studying at NYU at the exact same time and yet it doesn't seem like they were friends. Camila has said in interviews that they knew each other and went to the same gatherings but Cole didn't recall. Hmmm. Maybe he is basically Jughead because that seems like such a Jughead response. You can totally see Jughead not recalling seeing someone at an event because he's so busy being an observer of human nature and writing his book in his head. You hope that the two of them are good friends now since they have been on the show together, but hey, you never really know. Some TV sets are said to be like high school or college campuses and everyone is BFFs, but other times, no one is all that friendly. There is really no word about what kind of set Riverdale is like so you have to imagine it yourself.
13 The Set Is The Same As Your Other Fave Shows
You know when there's an overhead shot of the town of Riverdale? It turns out that shot was used in another show that you definitely love featuring a certain fast-talking, coffee loving mom and daughter duo. Yes, that would be Gilmore Girls. Who knew that Stars Hollow and Riverdale had something in common? That picture is also used on Pretty Little Liars. Just add Rosewood to the list of beautiful small towns where very creepy things happen. Of course, nothing creepy ever happened in Stars Hollow, unless you count some of the town festivals. That's not all, though. The set of Riverdale has also been a set on other shows such as Gilmore Girls, Hart of Dixie, and Pretty Little Liars. Now you want to re-watch all of those shows so you can point out this very shot, right? That's not a bad idea.
12 KJ Apa Played Music During His Audition
KJ Apa was cast as Archie Andrews and you are so glad that he was. You really can't picture anyone else as this iconic character. He looks so much like him and he does such a good job. It turns out that he really is as musically inclined as the character that he plays. When KJ Apa auditioned, he played a song. You are pretty sure that as soon as he walked into the room, everyone could tell that he was absolutely destined to be Archie Andrews and that was that. But the song must have definitely cemented the whole thing. You really love watching Archie sing and play his guitar. The musical moments on the show are so much fun. You definitely think that Archie loves being a budding musician more than being a jock, even though he has still kept his place on the football team and is trying to juggle both.
11 KJ Apa's Soap Opera Character Also Dated His Teacher
KJ Apa is from New Zealand and he was on a soap opera over there. His character was named Kane Jenkins and the show was called Shortland Street. In an interview with the website Collider.com, KJ said that he has actually acted out the whole teenager dating a teacher thing. He said, "It's funny, with the Miss Grundy relationship, the same thing happened to me with the soap opera that I was on, back home. My character was seeing his P.E. teacher, so it was weird to be doing it again. It was bizarre. I've definitely been there before, in the fake world." This storyline has happened on other teen shows -- Pacey having an affair with his English teacher in the first season of Dawson's Creek comes to mind -- but it still feels pretty fresh and new on Riverdale. Probably since there's a murder mystery connected to it.
10 The Episode Titles Are Films
It's always interesting and fun to look at the episode titles for your favorite shows and see what creative decisions have been made. Each show does something different and there is a pattern or formula that is always followed. For example, The O.C. always made sure that each episode started with "the." Some season one episodes were called "The Model Home" and "The Debut" and "The Girlfriend." On Gossip Girl, episode titles were super clever plays on words, common phrases, books, and movies. There was "The Handmaiden's Tale" and "Seventeen Candles" and "The Serena Also Rises." Every episode title on Riverdale is based on a film. Episodes are called things like "The Lost Weekend" and "The Last Picture Show" and "Heart Of Darkness." Wonder which awesome movie titles will be used in the second season?
9 KJ Apa Is Actually A Brunette

Yup, KJ Apa doesn't actually have red hair. The New Zealand-born actor actually has very dark brown (or even black) hair. He dyed his hair red to play the iconic Archie Andrews… which is a pretty good reason to dye your hair. He seems pretty happy with the decision. If you follow him on Instagram (@kjapa), you will see tons of selfies and adorable photos. He seems to be really enjoying his time in the spotlight and his acting success. He posts photos from the show and from his hangouts with friends and cast members, and it's definitely fun to follow along. Plus, come on, he's incredibly attractive. You just have to admit that because it's impossible not to mention it. So it's not really a hardship to look at his social media accounts on a regular basis, especially his Instagram. You will definitely want to keep up with him.
8 Twin Peaks Was An Inspiration
If you have watched Riverdale and thought that it reminded you of Twin Peaks, you're not alone… and it turns out that you are absolutely right to think that way. That mystery show was a huge inspiration for the cast and crew and even the sign announcing the town of Riverdale looks like the sign used for the town of Twin Peaks. A lot of fans and critics have pointed out the fact that both shows have the same storyline: a supernatural small town is affected by the death of a teenager. Yeah, that definitely is pretty much the same, in the best way possible. If you're a super fan of Twin Peaks and all its supernatural fun, you probably already realized this, but if you've never seen it, then it might be a good time to check it out. After all, you want to be all caught up for the revival, right? It's always good to know what's going on.
7 The Show Films In Vancouver
Some shows film in L.A., others film in New York, and others film in British Columbia. Riverdale films in the beautiful city of Vancouver, B.C. It seems like the actors really love filming in that city and they sometimes post about various activities on their social media accounts, which is cool. People call Vancouver "Hollywood North" since it is such a popular filming location. If you Google it, you can see the places that the show has filmed. The filming location of Pop's Diner is an actual diner called Rocko's Family Diner. It's in Mission, B.C. and you can look up the address if you want to take a trip and head over there, which sounds like a pretty fun idea. Most of the high school scenes are filmed at a real high school called Lord Byng Secondary School in Vancouver but another school in Burnaby was also used.
6 Ross Butler Won't Be In Season 2
Ross Butler played Reggie Mantle in season one of Riverdale and he did a great job. Unfortunately, the actor won't be coming back for the second season, although it does seem like there are some logical reasons why. The actor also appeared in the first season of the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and since that show will continue on for another season (and possibly more), it seems like he has chosen to focus on that project instead. Makes sense. There is only so much time and it seems pretty impossible to star on two shows at the same time. The only explanation is that he is "unavailable" so it seems like a scheduling conflict. The character will be recast for the second season and you will probably love the new actor as well, but you definitely liked seeing this particular actor as Reggie, so it's really too bad.
5 The Cast Didn't Know About Jason's Killer
Sometimes TV shows will film a few different scenes when something really big is happening, whether a couple is finally getting together or a beloved character is going to pass away or a character's killer is revealed. On Riverdale, the question of who ended Jason Blossom's life was a huge part of the first season. It turns out that the cast didn't know who killed him and that a few different scenes were filmed for the twelfth episode. That way, the cast wouldn't know the truth, and word wouldn't get out. Since everything gets spilled on social media, this is a really smart way to deal with this type of situation. Maybe you guessed correctly and maybe you were super shocked, but either way, you have to admit that this was a really great episode and that this storyline was wrapped up in a really moving and powerful way.
4 KJ Apa Loves Luke Perry Too
Legend.
A post shared by KJ Apa (@kjapa) on Jun 15, 2017 at 11:38pm PDT
When asked about playing Luke Perry's son, KJ Apa proved that he loves this actor as much as you do. He told Collider.com, "Honestly, it's amazing! I never want to take it for granted. I'm learning a lot from him, in just my own personal life. He gives me advice on set, to save a shot or to help a camera guy out. He's a legend." You love hearing that since let's face it, you have been a fan of Luke Perry since forever… or at least since you first watched him as Dylan McKay on Beverly Hills 90210 and you realize that he was amazing. You would love to be a fly on the wall on the Riverdale set and see the advice that Luke Perry gives KJ Apa. You feel like he probably gives a lot of the other actors the same kind of advice. Everyone must crowd around him, super excited to learn something from The Great Luke Perry. Sigh.
3 Lili Reinhart And Cole Sprouse Might Be Dating
Yup, Betty and Jughead might actually be in a real-life relationship, at least according to the rumors that are floating around. There is not a ton of proof or evidence out there. So why do people think that this might be happening? The actor posted a beautiful picture of Lili Reinhart sitting in a field of flowers and so people started thinking that maybe she is his real-life girlfriend. Then people started saying that he is really talented and that he loves taking photos and posting them all the time, so hey, maybe they are just friends and this picture was not romantic at all. You don't really know what to believe but you can definitely say that if they really are dating, you are absolutely on board. They do make a cute couple. Maybe the truth will come out eventually. Until then, you can keep shipping their characters.
2 Cole Sprouse Might Want Jughead To Be Asexual
Cole Sprouse has been interviewed all over the place about his character on Riverdale and he has said several times that he wanted Jughead to be asexual. He has explained it this way: "Jughead is 16 going on 17 (as of episode 10). Passion is fluid. And where his orientation is headed has, already, been heavily discussed… As an actor, I can only lend myself so much. Riverdale is a new universe, and we first need to think of jughead as a human agent within his environment, his decisions about his orientation are going to be informed by his upbringing and his immediate and longterm desires. Betty and Jughead's coupling are a great example of such an informed decision." So it seems like he is okay with this particular couple but he also thinks that it is possible that Jughead will be asexual.
1 Cole Sprouse Was Supposed To Play Archie
Can you picture Cole Sprouse playing Archie instead of Jughead? Probably not. That's because he is absolutely perfect as Jughead Jones. He's got a real mysterious thing going on and his vibe is just great. Here's a super fun fact: according to Buzzfeed.com, Cole Sprouse was supposed to audition for the character of Archie instead of Jughead. He wanted to be Jughead for a super smart reason: if he played the character that narrates the whole show, then his character would survive and stick around. Makes total sense. You're really glad that the actors are playing the characters that they are because this cast is just perfect. Everyone looks like the way that you thought the characters would look like and it all worked out really well. Now you're incredibly excited for the second season of Riverdale, right?!
