15 Girl Groups We Still Love Today
Every girl has her all-time favorite girl group. We know every member's name and story, the exact date of every album they released, and each and every costume they ever wore on stage. While we all fangirled hard for one group in particular (and we like to pretend this was when we were much younger, but that isn't always the case!), there are a few old groups that we all could appreciate, even if they weren't our fave. You might still not know everything about yourself, but you definitely knew from a young age which Spice Girl you were, and whether you were the Beyoncé, the Kelly or the Michelle of your friendship group. And, of course, we all know the exact definition of a scrub. Here are 15 girl groups that we still love today. We're forever grateful for the following 15 girl groups because they've inspired an attitude of female empowerment throughout our adolescence.
15 Girls Aloud
Girls Aloud was the ultimate female pop group in the U.K. You might not be able to name Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberly Walsh, but we are fairly sure you would be able to spot Cheryl Fernandez-Versini (a.k.a. Cheryl Cole) out of a lineup! We are also fairly sure that you could recognize at least a couple of their songs since these ladies achieved no less than 20 top-ten singles in the U.K., and two number-one albums out of the seven they produced. They were formed on the TV show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, and carried on slaying Britain with their pop sound until 2013, which is a considerably long time for a manufactured group made on reality television! In 2005, Girls Aloud even released their own Barbie dolls emulating each member of the group. That right there is how you know you have made it.
14 Las Ketchup
Okay, so you might only know one song from this group. But what a song! "The Ketchup Song (Aserejé)" taught most of us more Spanish than any of our classes at school could, and it was pretty much the ultimate summer anthem of 2002, to which even your mom's neighbor's dog knew the hand movements. The single sold seven million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles ever, which helped this family group to skyrocket out of the Spanish market and onto the global stage. It turns out that the song was trying to tell the story of a man named Diego who walks into a busy nightclub, and then the DJ plays his favorite song. Next to none of us knew that, though, because we were way too concerned with trying to sing along in Spanish as fast as we could and execute that highly technical and fabulous choreography.
13 The Saturdays
Another group gifted to the world from the United Kingdom is The Saturdays, comprised of Una Healy, Frankie Bridge, Mollie King, Michelle Humes and Vanessa White. The girls, who were formed in 2007, never split as such but have been on hiatus since 2014. We hate to be cynical, but that's never a good sign when it comes to singing groups. So we want to prepare ourselves for their eventual split, to prevent the shock and heartbreak we went through with all the other groups. Though we'd love just one more album! While these ladies have sold more than five million albums in England and Ireland, they had a little less success elsewhere, but that doesn't mean they still didn't show up on the international radar! The girls even had their own reality TV show called Chasing The Saturdays, which showcased all their challenges as they tried to break Los Angeles.
12 B*Witched
Any group whose line up consists of identical twin sisters will grasp our attention, but B*Witched managed to turn us into total fangirls. Their first album B*Witched, released in 1998, pretty much had all the singles of our childhood, including "C'est la Vie", "Rollercoaster", "To You I Belong" and of course, "Blame It on the Weatherman." So you might not be able to name all original four members of this Irish group (hint: Lindsay Armaou, Sinéad O'Carroll, and Edele and Keavy Lynch), but we bet you lose your cool in the club when it's 90s night and they rock out "C'est la Vie." The ladies split up briefly after the Lynch sisters formed their own group. But thankfully the members came back together for the TV series The Big Reunion in 2012, and then released some new material in 2014. So there is hope, no matter how bad the fallout!
11 Atomic Kitten
Wow-the U.K. really delivers when it comes to girl groups, huh? These girls originally formed in Liverpool in 1998, and first split up in 2004. But like B*Witched, the girls were reunited on The Big Reunion in 2012 and are still touring to this day! Love when that happens. Atomic Kitten has experienced a lot of changes in their line up over their expansive career, but that hasn't thwarted their efforts to achieve a healthy amount of success. By the time they originally split up in 2004, the girls had already sold ten million albums worldwide! Not to mention a string of insanely catchy and incredibly successful hits, including "Whole Again" in 2000, which was the group's most successful single and the fourth best-selling song ever by a girl group. They also covered "The Tide Is High" in 2002, introducing us to the mega hit originally recorded by Blondie and The Paragons.
10 Blaque
Blaque may not have been around for a long time, but they stayed long enough to leave their print on the world of R&B. Shamari Fears, Brandi Williams, and the late Natina Reed formed in Atlanta in 1996 and got their big break when the late Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes of TLC signed them to Left Eye Productions. Their self-titled first album ended up being certified platinum and featured singles like "808" and "Bring It All To Me" which the American market loved. They first split in 2004 and sadly weren't able to reunite. Even if you aren't familiar with Blaque, you definitely saw them in the 2000 film Bring It On, where they played Lava, Jenelope, and Lafred, cheerleaders for the rival team the East Compton Clovers. The girls also contributed their song "As If" to the soundtrack, which you should make one of your strong, independent woman anthems if it isn't already.
9 The Sugababes
Here is another group that proves that changes in the line up doesn't have to totally destroy a band's potential to be awesome! The Sugababes originated in London in 1998, with three founding members: Siobhán Donaghy, Mutya Buena, and Keisha Buchanan. Up until confirmation of the group's split came in 2013, several girls came and left the group, and there were rumors of fighting between the members circulating for years. But that didn't stop the ladies achieving 18 top-ten U.K. singles and six number ones. Our favorite Sugababes song has to be "Ugly" from their 2005 album Taller in More Ways. The positive song which aims to battle body-image issues and promote confidence has been compared to Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" and TLC's "Unpretty." You can draw comparisons if you like, but we don't think young girls can ever have enough songs telling them that they're perfect the way they are!
8 All Saints
This English-Canadian group has been around since 1993 and they've taken a few hiatuses and been through a few line up changes, but is miraculously still active over 20 years after their formation! In fact, the girls released their fourth album in 2016. How we wish some of the other groups on this list had followed in their footsteps! All Saints experienced huge success in the U.K. once they got on their feet, and in 1997, their debut, a self-titled album, became the third-best-selling album by a girl group in U.K. history. "Never Ever", one of the singles off that debut album, went on to become a massive hit and became the second best-selling single from a girl group ever in the U.K. So the ladies from All Saints have done all right up until now! A number of current musicians, including Charlie XCX, have cited All Saints as one of their musical influences.
7 G.R.L.
You may not be able to identify all of G.R.L.'s hits, but we are positive that you can sing every word to at least one. "Ugly Heart" was released in 2014, and totally took over all our radios. Most of us grew a bit sick of it, but it's one of those songs that you can't stop yourself from singing along to. G.R.L. was founded by Robin Antin and was intended to be a continuation of her pop brand. The official line up was finalized in 2012, and their first single "Vacation" was released in 2013. The girls featured on Pitbull's single "Wild Wild Love" in 2014, which helped launch them onto the international scene. Tragically, just as "Ugly Heart" was achieving success, news broke of the passing of member Simone Battle. The following year, the remaining members released a beautiful song called "Lighthouse" which was a tribute to her.
6 Wilson Phillips
You may have forgotten about these girls until they made an appearance in the 2011 hit film Bridesmaids. The all-American girl group consists of Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson, and Chynna Phillips, and was formed in 1989. Their 1990 hit "Hold On", which Annie and Lillian were obsessed with in the film, won them the Billboard Music Award for Hot 100 Single of the Year, and probably had a little bit to do with the ten million sales that their debut album received that year. Another contributing factor was probably that the girls were always destined for greatness. Carnie and Wendy are the daughters of The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, and Chynna is the daughter of Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and Papas, so with such musical talent running through their blood, it would be kind of weird if they weren't amazing! As of 2016, they are still active and doing performances. Woohoo!
5 En Vogue
Strangely enough, En Vogue has been around since 1989. They achieved incredible success with their debut single and album, which was also called "Hold On" (released back in 1990) Despite those similarities, En Vogue is a still-active R&B group. Though there have been many line-up changes and many attempts to reunite and then split back up, En Vogue has currently sold more than 20 million records internationally, making them pretty damn successful. Our personal favorite En Vogue hits include 1992's "Free Your Mind", "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)", and a cover of Aretha Franklin's "Giving Him Something He Can Feel." The auditions originally held for En Vogue were searching for extremely talented singers who were also intelligent and attractive, in the hopes of following the 1950s/1960s tradition of female trios and making a modern group. As we can all see, the creators got what they were looking for!
4 TLC
Boy, are we happy that these divas reunited and answered all of our prayers! TLC was formed in 1991, launched from Atlanta with members 'T-Boz' (Tionne Watkins), "Left Eye" (Lisa Lopes) and 'Chilli' (Rozonda Thomas). These ladies were on fire during the 90s and became the second best-selling female group of all time and best-selling all-girl group in American history. Because of TLC, we know the dangers of chasing waterfalls and the benefits of sticking to the rivers and the lakes that we're used to. We also know to never settle for a scrub, who happens to be a guy who can't get any love from us. Queen Bey herself has stated that TLC has influenced most girl groups that have come after them, including Destiny's Child. Even after the untimely death of Lisa Lopes, T-Boz and Chilli reunited and announced that they're releasing a completed studio album in 2017.
3 The Pussycat Dolls
We all know this group for a few reasons. Maybe it's because of Nicole Scherzinger, who was on the short-lived reality series Popstars which led to the short-lived band Eden's Crush.Or maybe because of, well, the super bold name. The Pussycat Dolls may have had a relatively short run when you compare them to other groups on this list with a little more longevity, but they certainly dominated the pop world while they were here. The original pop band consisted of singers (who were also crazily talented dancers) Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Kimberly Wyatt, Melody Thornton and Jessica Sutta, who were all led by the Hawaiian-born beauty Nicole. The group did receive a lot of backlash for failing to share the spotlight with the members fairly, and we must admit that it did kind of look like Nicole and her backup dancers some of the time. Okay, most of the time. These ladies definitely taught us that we definitely don't need a man!
2 Destiny's Child
The group that introduced us to Beyoncé Knowles has to be high up on the list. Destiny's Child as we know it was originally formed with a line up including Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. Managed under the super intimidating Matthew Knowles, the group was hot in the 1990s, and spat out classic hits like "No, No, No" and "Bills." Things got awkward after Roberson and Luckett were replaced with Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin, over which there was much speculation as to whether the girls had quit or whether they were forced out. Franklin was only with Destiny's Child for a while before she also left the group, which left the trio which gave us some of our favorite hits of the 90s, including "Survivor" and, of course, "Bootylicious." When Kelly and Michelle joined Beyoncé on stage during her 2013 Super Bowl performance, we were overly excited!
1 The Spice Girls
Formed in 1994, the Spice Girls went on to become a cultural phenomenon and the best-selling female girl group in world history. Though some members left and returned, while others stayed and then left before the reunion, the five original girls are, of course, Mel B (Scary), Emma Bunton (Baby), Geri Halliwell (Ginger), Victoria Beckham (Posh), and Mel C (Sporty). These ladies held the magic recipe for unprecedented girl-group success, and we are indebted to them for improving our childhoods and high-school years. They were one of the biggest icons of the '90s, with their union jack dresses and platform sneakers forever embedded in pop culture, plus they gave us a long string of hits which we can treasure forever. We will never get sick of singing "Spice Up Your Life" and no matter how much time passes, the Spice World movie will never get old. Who else can't wait for a reunion?
