15 Of JK Rowling's Best Twitter Moments
It's hard not to love JK Rowling. She is perhaps the most beloved author alive, thanks to her Harry Potter series of course. We've loved her recent books and in the past few years, she's also become a champion for the underdog, defending others (and herself) on Twitter whenever she experiences a particularly annoying troll. Not many people expected this; she actually only created a Twitter account to put an end to the fake accounts posing as her. For a year or so, she only posted every few months… but then that all changed. We're not sure why: maybe she realized how fun it is, or maybe she wanted to share her opinions with the world. Either way , we're glad she did it, as her account is hilarious, thought-provoking and kind, which is often hard to find online. The best-selling author definitely knows how to make the most out of 140 characters! Here are 15 of JK Rowling's best Twitter moments so far.
15 When She Shared Her Rejection Letters
JK Rowling certainly knows how difficult it can be for aspiring writers; before Harry Potter was published she was on benefits and struggling to make ends meet. She decided to share her rejection letters from publishers on Twitter to help comfort unpublished writers, after a request from a fan. Beforehand she removed the signatures from the picture, saying that her intention was “inspiration not revenge”. The letters rejected the now best-selling Cuckoo's Calling, which she sent in under the name Robert Galbraith. She often pitches novels under the name Galbraith, but she says that she often receives more rejections. This wasn't the first time she received rejection letters; Harry Potter was also turned down by several publishing houses before it was accepted. It has now sold over 400 million copies worldwide. When fans asked how she stayed motivated, she tweeted: “I had nothing to lose and sometimes that makes you brave enough to try.”
14 When She Drew A Tattoo Template For A Fan
Harry Potter is one of the most popular book series in the world, so the author is often contacted by super fans who found the books uplifting and inspiring. One fan called Kate reached out to the author to ask if she would draw an “expecto patronum” tattoo for her. She said that she had been a victim of bullying, and she had suffered from depression and self-harm. She said that the books had helped her to get through the difficult times, and the words “expecto patronum” inspired her. Rowling, who by this time was very active on Twitter, saw the tweet and responded with a tattoo template that she had written. We love her for taking the time out of her day to help a fan, and the fan really appreciated the gesture; she quickly booked a tattoo appointment. We imagine she is very happy with her tattoo - after all, it was personally designed by her favorite author.
13 When She Quoted Chamillionaire
JK Rowling struck up an unlikely friendship over Twitter after she responded to another troll who was tweeting her, calling her a “radge” with “obscene wealth”. He was clearly feeling a little angry, but it didn't bother Rowling; she just responded with “They see me Rowlin' they hatin", quoting the classic 2006 tune Ridin'. Her response was seriously funny, and her followers seemed to agree; her post was liked over 50,000 times and retweeted more than 30,000 times. The hip-hop star himself even saw the tweet. Chamillionaire replied to her tweet, saying “I was gonna remix your tweet to "We see them trollin" but you already took home the Grammy. Touché.” The author responded to him with a fist pump and kiss emoji, and fans were quick to notice the new friendship. How amazing is this? We do have to admit that although Chamillionaire is awesome, we agree on him that Rowling's version of the song is way better!
12 When She Defended Madonna
After Madonna fell over at the Brit Awards, her fall made headlines. Lots of people were laughing at the clip, and other commented that she shouldn't still be performing at her age. Thankfully Madonna found an alley in the author, who took to Twitter to defend her.
She even used a hashtag that was tailor-made for the occasion, tweeting: “"Are you the sort of person who gloats when they see a woman fall or the kind that celebrates a magnificent recovery? #TeamMadonna” We can't help but agree because the fall was probably a little embarrassing (and very painful!), and no one wants to feel like the world is laughing at them. The next day, Madonna sent a tweet to acknowledge Rowling's words: “"Thank you, J.K Rowling! So nice to read your words of support! Women supporting Women! Hell to the Yeah! ️#rebelheart” This could be our second favorite Twitter friendship of all time - after Rowling and Chamillionaire, of course.
11 When She Had The Perfect Comeback For The Westboro Baptist Church
The Westboro Baptist Church are infamous for their hateful opinions. They are notoriously homophobic, and they often picket the funerals of dead soldiers. Generally, they are not worth acknowledging, but they reached out to Rowling after Ireland voted in favor of gay marriage. The author is known as a long-time supporter of LGBT rights, and she was delighted by the news, retweeting an internet meme about Gandalf and Dumbledore being in a relationship together. She then wrote a tweet saying that the fictional couple could get married in Ireland. The Westboro Baptist Church responded to the meme, tweeting: “JK Rowling wants Dumbledore and Gandalf to marry in Ireland; if it happens WBC will picket!” Twitters users were quick to point out how bizarre the tweet was; obviously, the characters are fictional, so they could never get married. However, Rowling had the perfect comeback when she tweeted them saying: “Alas, the sheer awesomeness of such a union in such a place would blow your tiny bigoted minds out of your thick sloping skulls”.
10 When She Defended Dumbledore
JK Rowling first revealed that Dumbledore is gay almost a decade ago in 2007, but she still receives questions and comments about his sexuality. Like honestly people, it is 2016! A young Harry Potter fan tweeted the author to ask why the character is gay, saying “Thank you so much for writing Harry Potter. I wonder why you said that Dumbledore is gay because I can't see him in that way.” Rowling is clearly fed up of explaining Dumbledore's sexuality to readers. She responded to the tweeter, saying “Maybe it is because gay people just look like… people?” When Rowling first revealed Dumbledore's sexuality, she said “It has certainly never been news to me that a brave and brilliant man could love other men. He is my character. He is what he is and I have the right to say what I say about him.” We absolutely agree! Don't you just love her?
9 When She Defended Dumbledore Again
The previous incident wasn't the first time that the author defended Dumbledore's character, and it may not be the last. Later that year, Rowling responded to an ex-fan who said that he stopped being a fan when she revealed that the character was gay. In response, she suggested that he become a fan of Stagecoach founder Brian Souter instead. The founder funded a campaign a few years ago to try to stop the Scottish Government from repealing Section 2A of the Local Government Act. The amendment, which was repealed in 200, said that local authorities “shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality” or “promote the teaching in any maintain school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship”. It doesn't seem like Rowling is too worried about losing fans who are homophobic, which we think is fair enough, of course… and we love her comeback.
8 When She Responded To Trolls
Twitter is filled with trolls, and most people just ignore them and hope that they will disappear. However, JK Rowling has a different attitude: she would rather reply to them with a brilliant put-down. The author is a well-known supporter of the Labour party, and she was targeted with abuse after a Conservative party won the General Scottish Election with a majority vote. One user (whose account was later suspended) tweeted her and insulted her left-leaning political ideals and called her a terrible swear word. Most celebrities wouldn't even consider replying, but JK Rowling came back with an epic tweet, saying "@sjosiah0 The internet doesn't just offer opportunities for misogynistic abuse, you know. [member] enlargers can also be bought discreetly." A brilliant comeback: we're guessing that the troll was feeling a little red-faced after reading the response. But why did she respond? It may have been because she was feeling a little bit fed up with the abuse she was receiving; later that day she tweeted: "In the last hour I've been invited to relocate to France, Ireland, and Brazil!" Ouch.
7 When She Defended Noma Dumezweni
When Noma Dumezweni was cast to play Hermione Granger in the play Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, she became the target of widespread criticism. Many fans believed that the actress who plays the role should be white, but JK Rowling took to Twitter to defend the choice. She tweeted: “Brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione”, adding a kissing emoji to the end of her message. She then showed more support by retweeting a fan-made montage of pictures of Noma as Hermione. The character, who was made famous in the movies by actress Emma Watson, has never actually been specified as black or white in the books. Rowling never made a point of Hermione's ethnicity, and she clearly felt that Swaziland-born actress Noma was perfect for the role. We have to agree with her - after all, she did write the books!
6 When She Fought Back Against Shamers
JK Rowling is clearly a pro at putting people in their place on Twitter, and body shamers are no exception. So when a troll replied to Rowling's tweet congratulating Serena Williams on her sixth Wimbledon win, she didn't hold back. She initially tweeted Serena saying: “#SerenaSlam! I love her. What an athlete, what a role model, what a woman!”
The troll then tweeted: “@jk_rowling @hansmollman ironic then that main reason for her success is that she is built like a man”. The tweet was offensive and stupid, and Rowling quickly responded, branding them an idiot. “'She is built like a man.' Yeah, my husband looks just like this in a dress. You're an idiot.” The tweet came with two stunning pictures of Serena Williams posing for fans in a figure-hugging red dress. She definitely looks very feminine; maybe the troll was just feeling a little jealous of the 33-year-old Tennis player's success.
5 When She Had Another Great Troll Response
At this point, we're not sure why trolls are still attempting to insult JK Rowling. She could probably write a series of books on how to deal with online bullies. However, they continue to tweet her… and she continues to put them back in their place, often making headlines in the process. She chose to donate £1 million to the No campaign a few years ago, which wanted Scotland to stay in the United Kingdom. However, one Scottish Independence campaigner took particular offense to her doing this, tweeting her to tell her that she shouldn't have donated the £1 million. He then went on to say that her books should be burned in public. Rowling quickly replied, tweeting: “Book burnings! I'll bring the marshmallows.” We love her light-hearted response, especially when she received so many insults over her political opinions. She later went on to say that she responded to so many trolls because her “personal line [had] been crossed”.
4 When She Stood Up For Herself
She responded to many trolls about the Scottish Independence referendum, and some of her replies were truly brilliant. One of our faves has to be another person who took offense to her donating £1 million to the stay campaign, stating that she should have used the money to help sick children. She responded: "Hmm. To date, I've donated an eight figure sum to combat social deprivation & MS in Scotland… your turn. #whathaveyoudoneforScotlandlately? #bettertogether" The author then tweeted: "As you rightly point out, I am rich, and rich people would be just fine in an independent Scotland. I don't rely on one of the big employers talking about leaving the country. I don't rely on benefits anymore. If our economy tanks because the oil's running out, my family will be ok. That's not true for everyone.” We love how she calmly explains her viewpoint… and as a celebrity who lost her billionaire status because she donated so much to charity, we can't question her dedication to charitable work.
3 When She Said There Would Be LGBT Students At Hogwarts
JK Rowling is a proud advocate of LGBT rights, and recently she said that there would definitely be LGBT students at Hogwarts. The author started off by revealing that there was at least one Jewish student at Hogwarts, which prompted a fan to tweet her, asking if there were any LGBT students. She asked: “Do you think there are a lot of LGBT students in modern age Hogwarts? I like to imagine they formed an LGBT club.” Her friend then responded, saying: “it's safe to assume that Hogwarts had a variety of people and I like to think it's a safe place for LGBT students.” JK Rowling then put the discussion to rest as she tweeted: “But of course.” The text was followed by a picture that said: “If Harry Potter taught us anything, it's that no-one should have to live in the closet.” A seriously funny response and we appreciate Rowling's tireless efforts to stand up for LGBT rights.
2 When She Was Shocked
Let's be honest: when Harry Potter was over and the actors grew up, some of them really blossomed. One of the best examples in Matthew Lewis, who played Neville Longbottom. His character was known for being sweet and a little dorky, but the actor grew up to be seriously handsome. Unsurprisingly, the gorgeous actor was invited to do a half-naked photo shoot for Attitude magazine, and the pictures left Rowling feeling a little awkward. She tweeted: '@Mattdavelewis Not as bad as watching Dan in Equus, but close. Warn me next time, for God's sake.' Lewis replied with a downcast emoticon: 'Well, this is awkward. Sorry, Jo… ' She replied: “@Mattdavelewis I will always support you whatever you want to do, Matthew. Now go put some clothes on.” In Rowling's defense, she first met the actor when he was 12, so it probably was really strange to see him half-naked as an adult!
1 When She Didn't Care About Being Social Media Popular
Lots of celebrities use their Twitter accounts to create unnecessary drama, but Rowling clearly prefers to use her Twitter account to defend herself and others. From pop singers to tennis stars to LGBT rights, she is happy to step in and fight for the good cause. However, this often means that she is attacked by other people who can't seem to understand her viewpoint. Because of this, fans often tweet her to ask her if the abuse bothers her. One fan asked her a similar question, and she responded by tweeting: “If you're waiting for universal popularity, you'll be on Twitter a VERY long time.” She then concluded the tweet with a handful of kisses. Her wise advice is very true, and it seems that she is content with the knowledge that not every Twitter user is her fan. She sent out another tweet a few hours later to thank fans for continuously sending her kind messages, and she told them not to worry about her.
