15 Stars Who Never Got Married
It might come as a shock that some of the wealthiest, most famous and conventionally attractive people in the world have never gotten around to tying the knot, but it's the truth! While we often hear about the stars who have huge weddings and marriages that seem too good to be true, we rarely hear about those who choose to refrain from the whole marriage business. For one reason or another, the following 15 stars have never been married. Lots of them just don't believe in the concept. Some have been happily single for a while. Then there are those who haven't stumbled upon the opportunity for the perfect marriage, but still hope to do so one day! If we can learn anything from this, it's that marriage doesn't have to be the ultimate goal of your life. Society tells us to place it above everything else, but not everyone feels that way, and that's cool!
15 Hugh Grant
There are thousands of women who'd love the opportunity to be married to Hugh Grant, but it looks like they're going to have to keep dreaming! Hugh is just not the marrying type. He's had a few high-profile, long-term relationships in the past, including a scandalous relationship with Elizabeth Hurley, during which he was caught being unfaithful with a working woman on Sunset Boulevard. Hugh's also the father of a few children from different women, and that just goes to the show that you can be anti-marriage and pro-family at the same time. Hugh hasn't outwardly sworn off marriage or anything like that, but he's well into his 50s now, and as far as we know, things aren't looking promising on the marriage front! Hugh has stated in the past that he believes open relationships might be the way to maintain a marriage, and that casual affairs could keep things strong between two people.
14 Cameron Diaz
There's a common misconception that while men tend to be forced into marriage when they secretly want to remain free for their whole lives, women are the total opposite and have a biological need to get married ASAP. That might be the case for some women, but it ain't so for all of us! Cameron Diaz is an example of a woman who could really have anybody she wants but has never walked down that path. She's had plenty of relationships and dated famous hotties like Jared Leto, Justin Timberlake, Alex Rodriquez, and Matt Dillon, but she hasn't ever felt the need to legally bind herself to somebody else. The actress opened up to Esquire magazine about her feelings on the subject and explained that it's just not for her. “It just wasn't the thing I was drawn to. I certainly didn't want it in my 20s. Or my 30s.”
13 Eva Mendes
Eva Mendes has not only never been married before, but is adamant about never getting married in the future. Yup, she's totally sworn it off! The girl is in a relationship with Ryan Gosling, by the way, and if you're not marrying Ryan then it's safe to say you're not marrying anyone! The couple has two daughters, but don't feel the need to take things to the next level -- they're fine the way they are. Before beginning her relationship with Ryan in 2011, Eva was in a long-term relationship with George Augusto. Now, marriage today is seen as the ultimate display of love, and the most romantic thing two people can do. However, Eva begs to differ. “It's a very old-fashioned, archaic kind of thing. I mean, we did it for land, originally. How unromantic is that?” We guess the basis of weddings is the merging of property and assets, which is dull, to say the least!
12 Coco Chanel
Coco Chanel should be an inspiration to all women. We have her to thank for the classic little black dress, and for proving that women can be as successful as they want to be. Coco was like the ultimate boss-she created an empire which had long-lasting effects on the world of fashion and lived her life exactly the way she wanted to. Guess what that didn't include? That's right! Coco was never married. That's not to say that she never got the opportunity to do so; the Duke of Westminster proposed to her, giving her the opportunity not only to be a wife but to gain a noble status. Coco turned him down, later explaining, “I never wanted to weigh more heavily on a man than a bird.” Wow. Can we get that on a t-shirt, please? She lived all the way to 87, though her influence on women and fashion will never die.
11 Owen Wilson
Despite being involved with a few famous women over the years, funny man Owen Wilson has never taken that walk down the aisle. Now approaching his 50s, Owen has explained that he doesn't have a problem with marriage as such, and actually thought he'd be married by 30. The right opportunity just never presented itself to him. We feel like it's certainly better to refrain from marriage than to marry somebody for the hell of it! Owen has gotten the chance to have a family though and is the father of two children from two different women. When asked why he hasn't been able to hold on to a relationship for a long time, he explained that he has a lack of focus. “It is the same story (that) I've had with most of my relationships. I was lucky enough to find a great girl and, because of my lack of… focus, the relationship went south.”
10 Ricky Gervais
Another funny man who's never tied the knot is British comedian Ricky Gervais. Far from being terrified of commitment, Ricky is simply anti-marriage and isn't open to the idea. For him, it isn't that he doesn't want to settle down and have a monogamous relationship, but he doesn't need to legally bind himself to somebody else in a religious setting. Ricky has stated before that he doesn't believe in God, so it makes sense that the whole sacrament of marriage isn't high on his list of priorities! Though he's never been married, he has been able to enjoy a long-term relationship with Jane Fallon. The couple has been together for 32 years, and Ricky believes that a piece of paper and a few vows couldn't possibly make them any closer. That's longer than most married couples in Hollywood, so we are going to trust his judgment on this one. The guy is a relationship master!
9 Al Pacino
Well into his 70s, legendary actor Al Pacino has had a life rich in romance and relationships, and totally marriage free! Among those whom he's dated in the past is Ellen Barkin, Tuesday Weld, Debra Winger, Beverly D'Angelo, Jill Clayburgh, and famously, his Godfather co-star, Diane Keaton. Al's even been linked to far younger actresses, including Winona Ryder and Rose McGowan, but none of these equations included a wedding. His never marrying hasn't robbed Al of the chance to be a father either-he has three kids. The ultimate single dad, he had his first daughter, who's working in the industry herself, with acting coach Jan Tarrant. After a significant gap in time, he fathered twins with Beverly D'Angelo. So why has he never taken those vows? It isn't exactly clear. In the past, Al has hinted at being a closeted romantic, so we could still see a wedding for him in the years to come!
8 Edie Falco
She may have played the ultimate housewife on TV-Carmela Soprano, wife to mob boss Tony Soprano-but IRL, Edie Falco is totally the opposite. This does come as a total shock because she's such an amazing actress and played the role of a wife so convincingly that we can't really imagine her any other way! "I'm not sad about any of my life,” Edie once said of her single status. “It's so unconventional. It doesn't look anything like I thought it would." She also played an overbearing though loving mother in the hit TV series, and that part is at least somewhat true! We don't know how overbearing she is, but Edie adopted a son in 2005 and a daughter in 2008. She could just not be the marrying type, or she could have been so turned off by pretending to be married to Tony Soprano that she's sworn off husbands for life. Who knows?
7 Winona Ryder
Here's an actress who has never been married, though she doesn't have a real problem with the notion! Winona Ryder is in her 40s now and has never tied the knot. That's not to say that she hasn't had any noteworthy romantic experiences-in her little black book are the names Johnny Depp, Dave Pirner, and Matt Damon! During the '90s, she had a whole world of women looking at her in jealousy for her dating escapades, and for getting to cuddle Johnny Depp while he was dressed as Edward Scissorhands. Unlike many of the other stars on this list though, Winona is more than open to marriage. She's said in the past that she actually aspires to it one day. In that case, we feel like she just hasn't met the right person yet. We guess that even all the money, fame, and beauty in the world can't speed up the shooting of Cupid's arrow!
6 Diane Keaton
Like her ex-lover Al Pacino, Diane Keaton is a living legend in the film business. In her career, she's starred in more than 50 movies, and even won an Academy Award in 1977 for her role as Annie Hall. Aside from an iconic actress, Diane has also been a director, producer, writer, singer, real-estate developer, singer, photographer, and mother, but never a wife. In addition to Al, she has famously dated Woody Allen and Warren Beatty. When asked about her decision to never get married, Diane explained that she isn't necessarily anti-marriage. “I wouldn't rule [marriage] out, but at the same time, I do not see that in my future,” she said. “I mean, there's a certain point in your life where you can't help it, you're biologically charged… You dream about men, you love them, you're excited by it, and I don't feel that way now. There's a kind of freeing aspect to that.”
5 Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks is perhaps one of the most famous female figures who's never been married. One of the most successful models of all time, the standard reaction to hearing that Tyra has never gone down that road is shock because the concept of a woman not actually wanting to marry is so foreign to many people. But it does happen, with everyday women as well as celebs! Tyra hasn't sworn off love and has actually settled down with her longtime boyfriend Erik Asla, with whom she had a child via surrogacy. Tyra admitted that she had some fertility issues, but was thankfully able to find a way past them. York Banks Asla arrived in January 2016, and Tyra shared the first photo of him on Valentine's Day that year. This family is the ultimate example that you can be gushing with love and happy without ever having uttered a single vow in your life!
4 Matthew Perry
Chandler Bing on the TV show Friends had a fear of commitment and settling down. By contrast, Matthew Perry who played Chandler doesn't have any issues with settling down, but he never has. The star has dated a string of famous women in the past, including Yasmine Bleeth, Lauren Graham, and Lizzy Caplan, but has never gotten to the marrying stage. He has opened up about that side of his life and has stated that although he hasn't got the chance yet, he would love to get married in the future. “I would love to start a family of my own. I think I'd make a great dad and I think I would make a great husband.” Not that we know Matthew as a person, but we also have a feeling that he'd make a great father and husband. How can anybody that funny not be a delight to live with?
3 Kristin Davis
Kristin Davis is known for playing the character of Charlotte York on Sex and the City. You know Charlotte York-the traditionalist who fantasized about marriage until she met the man of her dreams and quit her job to be his wife. IRL though, Kristin is completely different! One thing she and Charlotte agree on is being a mom, and she adopted Gemma in 2011, who's now her sole focus. "The greatest luxury is being home in the morning when my daughter wakes up and not have to go anywhere," she told Haute Living. When asked about the state of her love life, Kristin said this: “I certainly intellectually feel like I'd like to have another romantic relationship, but I don't know how to make the day-to-day of it happen. I don't have time!" Kristin also stated that she never understood why all her friends were in a rush to get married! Totally anti-Charlotte.
2 Oprah
She's one of the most powerful women in the world, and Oprah has never been married. After dating a series of famous men, Oprah settled down with Stedman Graham in 1986, who's by her side to this day. The couple got engaged in 1992 but never moved on to the next step of actual marriage. When asked about it, Oprah maintains that she and Stedman are in a spiritual union, not a legal or religious one. She told Essence magazine, “The truth of the matter is, had we gotten married we wouldn't be together now because in no way is this a traditional relationship.” We think it's safe to assume that we won't ever see Oprah walk down the aisle wearing white. She's Oprah though, so she definitely knows what works in her life and what doesn't. We definitely trust the woman who built a $700-billion empire from scratch to know what's up!
1 Leo DiCaprio
Leo DiCaprio is arguably the most famous bachelor on the planet. He's never been married, and from what we can see, isn't really the type to settle down. He's been linked to a series of models and the likes of Rihanna, but he isn't exactly into confirming things for the media, so we're never really sure what his relationship status is. In the past, Leo has said that he does see children in the future, though he's never said that he specifically sees marriage. “I take it as it comes. We'll see what happens in the future. I don't try to determine what the future will be. I take it day-by-day,” he said. To be honest, Leo just looks like he's having fun and not taking his love life so seriously, which is perfectly okay. Especially when you have such a huge career, at least one area of your life should be chill and stress-free!
