15 Things You Didn't Catch On 'Riverdale' So Far
You're obviously watching and loving Riverdale because there's just no way that you wouldn't be. The television adaptation of the infamous Archie comic book series is darker and beautifully crafted. Your fave comic book characters have truly come to life, from girl-next-door with a perky blonde ponytail Betty to bad girl Veronica to adorable jock/musician Archie to sarcastic sidekick Jughead. If you're not watching, then your best friends totally hate you and keep texting you asking what's wrong with you. So don't worry, you'll be watching this show before you know it. But even though you're all caught up with all of the episodes that have aired so far, there are a few things that you have probably missed. After all, when you're obsessing over the amazing characters and hilarious dialogue and the mystery at the heart of the show, sometimes you don't catch it all. Here are 15 things you didn't catch on Riverdale so far.
15 Cheryl Has The BEST Lines
Did you love Cheryl Blossom when you were a kid and used to read the comics? Probably not. She was always this red-headed bombshell who was a serious threat to Betty and Veronica. She just was not the nicest person out there. Sure, Cheryl Blossom is definitely the resident mean girl on the TV adaptation, but you love her. You absolutely love her. Yes, you sympathize with her since she lost her brother Jason and her parents are truly awful people, but that is not why you adore her so much. You are a big fan because she has the best lines out there. She calls Veronica "Frida shallow" and talks about a "suburban legend." Super hilarious. When you need some comic relief from the darkness that is surrounding the town of Riverdale, you can always look to the fabulous Cheryl Blossom for some amazing lines. Seriously, pay attention next episode (or just rewatch while you can)!
14 Veronica's Mom And Archie's Dad Dated
Sure, you know that Veronica's mom and Archie's dad are currently dating. Well, they've been on a few dates. Well, they're kind of dating. Well, they're both married… to other people… as Veronica has pointed out. But they're definitely into each other and trying to see what happens and where things go. But did you catch that the two of them used to date back in the day? In fact, they dated right before Veronica's mom met her dad, and then she chose him over Archie's dad Fred. As Fred tells her, she picked the rich kid over him and that was that. That must have really sucked and been super painful. It's awful for you to think about since let's face it, Fred Andrews is the most adorable TV dad out there. You can't imagine a better TV dad (and you're not just saying that because he's played by Dylan McKay).
13 It Pours Rain During A Football Game
In one of the early episodes of the first season, there's a big football game that's kind of a tribute to Jason and also Betty and Veronica debut on the cheerleading team. There was a lot of tension and drama happening in this scene, so it's possible that you didn't notice that it was raining during this scene. Like pouring rain. If you're confused about why it was raining, you're probably not alone. It doesn't really make sense. Yes, it made things a bit more dramatic… but this is a teen drama. Things are definitely interesting and tense enough. You might have missed this because it wasn't integral to the plot at all and really didn't even need to happen. You were more focused on Cheryl's grief and how she was dealing the loss of her brother Jason, who she calls her BFF and soulmate. Even though she's super mean, you do feel for her.
12 There's No Archie/Veronica/Betty Love Triangle
This is a pretty big surprise for fans of the Archie comic book series since this love triangle was basically the entire story (at least when you were growing up and used to read them). But on Riverdale? Not so much. While there's a hint of an Archie/Veronica/Betty love triangle in the first episode or two, it quickly becomes clear that's not really what's going to happen. Veronica totally backs off and understands that Betty has been in love with Archie since forever. She respects the girl code and wants the two of them to be best friends. She cares about that more than a relationship with Archie, which is really cool of her and which definitely makes you like her. You're probably waiting and waiting for this love triangle to become a thing again, though. Hey, maybe it will in season two (thankfully, there is a season two coming!).
11 Everyone Has The Best Nicknames
Everyone talks really fast on this show (like really, really fast) so sometimes, you don't catch every single thing that all of the characters say. That's a real shame since the dialogue on this show is seriously top-notch. Veronica has some of the best nicknames for her friends. She calls Archie "Archiekins" which should definitely put a smile on your face. Since Betty has the same name as a certain Mad Men character, she is said to be "too season five Betty Draper" (which is meant as a serious dig). Later, she is said to be "very season one Betty Draper" (which is meant as a serious compliment). There's nothing better than when your friends come up with nicknames for you because this just proves that they adore you and that you're becoming closer and closer. Sure, you don't always love the names that they come up with, but that's all part of the process.
10 Jughead's Sister Is Named Jellybean
YES. Really. Jughead has a sister named Jellybean and now you want that to be your name. You really, really do. You don't care if people would think that was strange. You don't care if you would never hear the end of the candy jokes. You just don't care about any of that. Now you hate your name because it just seems so horrible ordinary. Why couldn't your parents have named you something more creative?! Jughead is really one of the best characters on this show. At first, he's really broody and mysterious, but as you get to know him, you realize that he's really a sweetheart. He's hiding a whole bunch of secrets and that's why he seems so angry all the time, but he's still a decent guy underneath it all. Now you wish that Jughead's sister was a bigger part of the show and that you could see her all the time… based on her name alone. Yup.
9 Veronica's Mom Is Named Hermione
Did you catch that Veronica's mom is Hermione? Yes, really. It really is. Yup, like the Harry Potter character. Okay, you totally get that these two names have nothing to do with each other and that this is the name that Veronica's mother has always had. This is something that you might have missed, since a few other characters have called her by name. Since you're such a big fan of both HP and Emma Watson's character, you obviously are all about this name and this makes you an even bigger fan of this show too. Not that you needed another reason to keep watching it and loving it, though, of course. You are into the creepy small town vibe, you wish that you could hang out at the local diner and you just love how everyone is so pretty and witty and hilarious. While Stars Hollow will probably always be your dream small town, Riverdale is totally a close second.
8 Cheryl's Actually Nice
Did you catch that Cheryl Blossom is actually nice? While she may be the high school's mean girl, she doesn't really hold that identity. That's because if you look closely and think about it, she has bonded with Veronica, and she is actually a total sweetheart. She's in a rough place now because she misses Jason so much and wishes that she didn't have to go through life without him, but unfortunately that's the reality that she now has to deal with. She invites Veronica over for a sleepover the night before Jason's funeral service because she doesn't want to be alone, and you really feel for her when you realize that's the truth. She's not lying. She's not coming up with nasty things to say. She's just being real and raw and honest and she's actually much nicer than you originally thought. If you missed this, don't worry. She seems really rude so it's no wonder.
7 You Totally Know Jughead's Dad
You definitely know the guy that plays Jughead's dad. You might not have caught it because you were too focused on Jughead's dramatic storyline… and how badly you want his dad to get his act together. It is seriously frustrating watching this family get torn apart. So who is the actor? That would be none other than Skeet Ulrich. If that name sounds familiar, that is because you totally know him. He played Billy in Scream, aka Sydney's boyfriend, aka the killer. Since then, he has been in a bunch of movies and TV shows and has really had an awesome career. It is always fun to watch a new TV show and realize that you recognize one of the actors. If you are a fan of them because they were in your all-time fave horror movie, for example, then that is even better. Now you want to re-watch the 1996 film, right?
6 The Parents Have Beef With Each Other
There is definitely a lot to focus on when it comes to this show, so if you have been super busy following the storylines of the younger characters on Riverdale, then you might not notice that the parents have a ton of beef with each other. It is like they absolutely loathe each other and that definitely makes for some dramatic moments. Betty's parents hate Cheryl's parents, for example, which makes sense since Betty's mom and dad do not think that their daughter Polly should have been in love with the late Jason Blossom. While Archie's dad and Veronica's mom definitely do not hate each other -- the emotions that they feel for each other are definitely closer to love -- it is safe to say that they have a dramatic past. And there are some hard feelings there, since Hermoine Lodge left Fred Andrews for Veronica's dad.
5 Archie Is Jealous AF
When Archie learns that Betty and Jughead are totally a thing now, he is definitely super jealous. He probably doesn't think that he is because it was his idea to just stay friends with Betty. It would definitely be a big surprise to him that he actually has feelings for her. But he definitely seems to. You might not have caught this moment since it was super brief and then Archie moved on, but he's definitely not thrilled about the prospect of his two friends dating each other. It's really frustrating to watch characters who are clearly into each other but just refuse to date for whatever reason. While you totally get that Archie thinks that he doesn't have romantic feelings for Betty, you have to say that you think he's lying to himself. He's in denial about what he really thinks and feels. They would just make the cutest couple, don't you think?
4 Betty Really Likes Jughead
Did you catch that Betty actually likes Jughead? You might not have because you've been too busy shipping Archie and Betty. It's not that you don't think that Jughead is the best. You totally do. He's hot, he's got that whole bad boy thing going on, and he's also a sweetheart. You just never thought that Betty would have eyes for any boy who wasn't Archie. She's been in love with him since forever and they have been close friends for basically their entire lives. You do think it's cool that instead of pining for Archie and wishing that he would say that he's been in love with her too, she decides to take a risk and date someone else. You're definitely torn because you're dreaming about Archie and Betty dating but you have to admit that she and Jughead make a really sweet couple. Ugh. The struggle is real.
3 Jughead Is Basically Homeless
Poor Jughead. When he's all bent out of shape about the town's drive-in movie theatre closing down, you learn that he's been sleeping there. Because he's basically homeless. Because his dad is a member of the town's gang and the two of them aren't living together anymore, let alone on good terms. You might have missed this because it happened in an episode that was totally chock-full of dramatic moments. When so many things are going on, it can be hard to remember every single thing that happens. That's just so true about Riverdale. You're also thinking about these lovely characters and wondering what's going to happen next. You're shipping Archie's dad and Veronica's mom even though you know there are a whole bunch of obstacles in their way. You want Archie to wake up and realize that Betty is the one for him. You want Veronica to find her own love story. You want everyone to be happy and, yes, you're kind of c0-dependent.
2 The Parents Are Pure Evil
While you have been busy obsessing over this show, did you notice that the parents are pure evil? That they're basically monsters? That they are just the WORST? If you didn't catch this, then you have to go back and re-watch all of the episodes because you won't be able to miss this fact the second time around. Cheryl's parents are truly at the top of the evil list since they seem to hate their daughter and they act like she's a massive embarrassment. They don't care that she's missing her brother or that she's hurting. Nope. They just want her to go away. Her mom even says that she should ship her off to a European boarding school but no one would take her. OMG. Nuts. Veronica's dad is super corrupt, and Josie's parents put way too much pressure on her to succeed (and you just know that pressure is going to catch up with her eventually, if it hasn't already).
1 You Know All The Parents
Did you catch that you literally know all of the actors and actresses who play the parents on this show? Okay, not everyone, but most of them. Luke Perry plays Archie's dad Fred Andrews. Of course, you know and love him since he was none other than Dylan on Beverly Hills 90210 and you spent a good chunk of your life wondering if he should pick Brenda or Kelly. Talk about a classic love triangle. Mädchen Amick plays Betty's mom Alice Cooper… and you know her from Twin Peaks and also from her role as Christopher's love interest Sherry on Gilmore Girls. And Archie's mom is even Molly Ringwald! Yes, the 1980s John Hughes movie star herself! This is really the best show ever since it's not only a juicy teenage drama but it also features some of your favorite stars. If you want to re-watch the entire thing all over again, we're right there with you.
