15 Ways Pretty Little Liars Is #Friendship Goals
Do you watch Pretty Little Liars? If you don't, you're seriously missing out. There can't possibly be a more fun, fashionable, and thrilling TV show to watch -- there just can't. The series recently wrapped up its sixth season with a major twist (as usual), and there are rumors that the seventh season won't be its last. Fans can only hope for many more years of these witty characters and mysterious story lines. At the heart of the show is an overarching mystery. When the show opens, Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna are getting used to life without their former BFF and Queen Bee Alison, who everyone thinks is dead but who they think might be sending them creepy text messages. They soon realize that whether or not it's Ali, someone out there knows everything about them -- every last little secret. Scary stuff. But in recent years, particularly the most recent season, this show has become more about the little things in a long-term friendship than a mystery. Here's why PLL should be where you get all your friendship inspo from.
15 The Girls Adore Each Other
You can't watch a single episode of this show without realizing how much the four friends love each other. It's seriously adorable and so sweet. In the first season, the girls are slowly finding their way back to each other after drifting apart a bit, but by season six, you can't believe there was ever a time when they weren't super close. If you have a close group of friends and love to grab coffee or drinks or go on weird adventures (hopefully not the last one, unless you're in the middle of a mystery like these four), then this show is for you.
14 They Always Come Home
The most interesting thing about the second half of the sixth season? The fact that there was a huge time jump so now the girls are in their early 20s. You didn't get to see them in college, but you do get a few flashbacks. Now the four are back home in Rosewood for yet another mystery (of course) and at first they definitely resist this. They've been living fabulous lives in NYC, Washington, Boston, and whatever tropical destination Emily has been hiding out. But as the episodes progress, you start to see that they're actually happy to be home again.
13 They're Each Super Unique
It's awesome how unique each character is. You've got Emily, who is super sporty and a professional swimmer, although by the latest season she's starting to dress a bit more girly. Spencer is super preppy, crazy smart, and ambitious and never seems to need sleep. Hanna is all about fashion and wears the trendiest outfits of any of the girls. Finally, you've got Aria, who changes her hair pretty often, does yoga, is a vegetarian, and was a born writer. The girls don't insult each other or act like they should be more than someone else -- they simply accept each other as they are and celebrate their differences. Sounds like friendship heaven.
12 They Show Each Other Tough Love
Sometimes you're pretty mad or frustrated with your best friends, but it doesn't mean you hate them or want to break up forever. These characters definitely get that. Hanna is often rolling her eyes during their strategy sessions and the girls don't often agree with a plan one of them has come up with. They each have strong views and opinions, and sometimes they tell each other when they're wrong. That's true friendship, right there.
11 They Even Date Each Other's Exes
It's the golden rule of friendship: never date your friend's ex-boyfriend. You're just not supposed to do it. Pretty Little Liars recently shocked fans when they revealed that Spencer has been falling for Caleb, Hanna's ex, for ages and that -- shocker -- Caleb felt exactly the same way. Hanna is such an amazing friend that she could see that although she was crazy jealous, she had to let Spencer and Caleb explore their romantic connection. She essentially gave them her blessing. How many friends would do that? No, really. Not many.
10 They've Grown Up Together
A lot can happen during high school -- and often does. For these girls, of course, they had to figure out what had happened to their BFF and they had to deal with a crazy stalker who kept trying to kill them at various points. Fun stuff (not). These girls are the best friends you could find on TV or elsewhere because they've grown up together. They know each other the way you should know your good friends.
9 They've Survived The Worst
After many misses with the mysterious "A" that is texting and stalking them, Hanna, Spencer, Aria, and Emily finally met their match. At the end of season five, each girl woke up in a bedroom that seemed like their childhood room… only to realize that they were in A's "lair" or "The Dollhouse" as they started calling it. They were being held hostage and had been tortured as well. It was seriously scary and although they eventually escaped, it definitely left a lasting impression.
8 They Didn't Let Distance Affect Them
It's an old story: you go away to college and when you come back, whether for Christmas or holidays or summer vacation, things just aren't quite the same with your best friends. You've drifted apart, naturally, since you've gone off into the world and are experiencing different things. Not so much for these four Liars. Although they each went to college and have been working in different cities, and are living completely different lives (Hanna's an assistant to a mean fashion designer, Spencer working in politics, Aria's working in publishing), when the four are together, it's like no time has passed at all.
7 They're Connected Forever
Whatever happens in their lives from here on out, these four friends are forever connected. There's no way they couldn't be when they keep trying to escape Rosewood and the adorable but creepy small town keeps pulling them back in. It would be impossible to go through what they have and not be bonded for life. You and your friends are probably not dealing with the same life-or-death situations as these characters, but if you've ever gone through something and it bonded you, then you can definitely relate.
6 They Let Each Other Be
What's so hilarious and yet heartwarming about these Liars is how they know exactly what the other girls are thinking and feeling, and yet they respect them too much to straight-up say it. Take Hanna, for example -- she's currently engaged to Jordan, and yet everyone knows she's not going to marry him. It's just super obvious. But do the girls say that to her? Nope, they're waiting to see if she comes to that conclusion herself.
5 They Drop Everything For Each Other
You know how when your best friend is getting over a horrible break-up or something, you literally drop all your other social plans and head over to her apartment with a pint of ice cream and a bottle of red wine? Yeah, the four Liars are just like that. They will cancel all other plans (much to their boyfriends' annoyance and frustration) and help each other on their missions to find and stop A. It's amazing how many missions they've gone on over the years.
4 They Help Each Other Follow Their Dreams
In season five, Hanna realizes she's got no cash for college so she gets Emily to teach her a dance so she can enter a pageant and win money. She's a terrible dancer and Emily is basically a professional, so it's pretty funny, but most of all, this episode proves how good of a friend Emily is. These girls help each other follow their dreams and are never anything but super supportive, which is exactly how you hope your good friends will be.
3 They're Not Super Boy Crazy
Okay, they are -- you start to realize that the girls are always kissing a new crush after breaking up with someone. It's just not real life but, moving on, there are a ton of things about this show that are not super realistic but are just plain fun despite that fact. These girls aren't so boy crazy that they drop each other for guys, though. They don't cancel on each other or whine about their boyfriend drama or gush about how perfect their relationship is. Basically, they behave like perfect best friends.
2 They Protect Each Other
It takes the girls' parents forever and ever to figure out that there's an A around, and it's crazy to think how that must feel. Can you imagine realizing what your kid has gone through? But the girls are such amazing friends that they protect each other and always have each other's backs. If there's a problem with Hanna, the girls would never dream of telling her mom, even if they probably should. They just don't want to involve anyone else in their messes unless they have to.
1 They Keep Each Other's Secrets
The hallmark of a good best friend: does she keep your deepest, darkest secrets? Or does she spill to the entire school/office and everyone else you know? You definitely don't want to call someone your BFF if they can't stay silent about the things that are most important to you. What's so great about the friendships on Pretty Little Liars is how the girls keep quiet about each other's pasts and secrets -- a huge one being Aria's serious relationship with their English teacher, Ezra Fitz (swoon). They would never dream of spilling the beans. Which is good… because, of course, they have A to do that for them.
