16 Celebs We Predict You'll Be Obsessed With In 2017
Showbiz is tough, one moment a celebrity can be at the top of their game with work flooding in and fans screaming their name - they believe it's never going to end. Then a much younger, new star comes along and the light now shines on them. But why do we need such a high turnover of celebrities?
Psychologist Sheila Kohler explained to Psychology Today, "We copy the famous, buy dresses that are similar or even the same, we wear our hair the way our idol does in an attempt to capture the glamor we admire. But we can also learn their tricks of the trade, in an effort to emulate, and in some rare cases to surpass what came before us."
The young stars of today are more diverse, driven and clued up to self-promotion than any of those that came before them. They are making smart decisions and winning over millions of fans. We are obsessed with celebrities but need to be kept on our toes and introduced to new talent to peak our interest.
Here are the people we will all be raving about in 2017.
16 Lily-Rose Depp
2017 is certainly going to be a big year for Lily-Rose Depp. The 17-year-old daughter of Pirates of the Caribbean actor Johnny Depp and model Vanessa Paradis has already starred in her first advert, as she is the face of Chanel's No.5 perfume. Being the muse of designer Karl Lagerfeld is a huge career boost for the teenager who has always had an affinity with the luxury brand.
She told Love magazine, “Chanel has always been this big thing for me - there are baby pictures of me wearing my mom's Chanel pumps. I have been lucky enough to know Karl since I was eight - yes, half my life. I have been so lucky to be around him and just talk to him. He makes people feel great. He is a presence. He's very perceptive; I really feel like he understands people."
15 The Cast of Stranger Things
Stranger Things was the breakout show of the year that everyone was talking about. The young cast members; 12-year-old Millie Bobbie Brown, 14-year-old Gaten Matarazzo, 13-year-old Finn Wolfhard, and 15-year-old Caleb McLaughlin, won over millions of fans worldwide and became an Internet storm.
Well, they are back for round two next year as Netflix have confirmed there will be a second season. Millie, who shaved her head for the show to take on the role of Eleven, told Vogue magazine, ““I never thought this would happen… it's a pinch-me moment.” When asked at what age she discovered a love of acting, she replied, “I didn't do school plays. I've never done a play in my life, actually. Not even a nativity. If I'd been in a school play I'd probably have sneezed and messed everything up. With Eleven it was about going by instinct - like what I'd do with her body language, and how she spoke. It was really fun to suggest things and embody the character myself.”
14 Amandla Stenberg
Despite her 18-years of age, Amandla Stenberg is wiser than her years. She is best known for her role as Rue in The Hunger Games and has already lead the way for young women and female empowerment. She identifies as bi-gender, bisexual and as an intersectional feminist.
This year she went to war with Kylie Jenner over Twitter. Kylie wore cornrows in her hair and Amandla hit out, “When u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter.” Kylie hit back tweeting, “Mad if I don't, Mad if I do… Go hang w/ Jaden or something.” We would like to think Amandla put across a stronger argument in this one.
13 The Chainsmokers
Electric dance duo TheChainsmokers have been equally loved as they have been hated for their electro-syle, since their hit song Closer stormed the charts earlier this year - the song actually stayed top of the charts for a staggering 12 weeks. Well a mixed initial reception never hurt the career of Justin Bieber and they certainly are making a name for themselves on the celebrity circuit.
During an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, band member Alex Pall said Lady Gaga's new single Perfect Illusion “sucks” and it wasn't long before Gaga heard about the dig. She tweeted the pair her new track A-Yo and wrote: “Maybe you'll like this track better.” They have already upset Gaga, received a Grammy nomination and landed a worldwide hit - these guys are only going to get bigger.
12 Kaia Gerber
Kaia Gerber has some big shoes to fill in the modeling world, as she is the daughter of legendary supermodel Cindy Crawford and her father is also former model-turned-entrepreneur, Rande Gerber. Although she is only 15-years-old, she has already proved that she's got what it takes since she signed with IMG models last year. The Malibu-born beauty has modeled for Andrew Wang and Moschino, alongside being very close to hitting a milestone one million followers on Instagram.
She revealed during an interview with Teen Vogue, "When I look at my mom, aside from physical features (of course), we share many of the same mannerisms. I notice it when looking back on past videos of her. I don't know if it's genetic, or something I've just caught onto, but our actions mimic one another."
11 Niall Horan
After Christmas, former One Direction star Niall Horan will "disappear" from the public eye completely. But don't panic - it's all part of the bigger things to come. He is taking a break to spend time with family and work on more music for the upcoming year. His debut solo single This Town peaked at number 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was written by the Irish-born crooner himself.
In a handwritten note he emailed out to his fans, he said, "I haven't been home since last Christmas so I miss everyone." He added, "After Christmas, I'm gonna fall off the face of the earth and do one of my disappearing acts. I want to come up with more song ideas and get back in the writing zone." He then vowed to return in February so watch this space!
10 Dream Kardashian
Dream Kardashian is not even two months old and she's already made showbiz headlines as her mother, Blac Chyna, continues the ongoing battle with the Kardashians over the use of their world-famous name. TMZ exclusively reported, "Chyna is really heartbroken over this whole name feud." Their source added, "The Kardashian family can't stop thinking for themselves and just accept her as one of them."
According to court documents obtained by from the Kardashian's company, the sisters claim that they would "suffer damage including irreparable injury to their reputation and goodwill." The document also states, "(Chyna) is deliberately seeking to profit from the goodwill and popularity."
Dream Kardashian (who already has dozens of fan pages created in her name) is about to be on whirlwind journey with her family that we will all be watching and she is completely oblivious to it.
9 Adwoa Aboah
Adwoa Aboah became a huge name in the fashion world when she fronted the Calvin Klein spring campaign alongside Kendall Jenner and FKA Twigs. Although she slayed during the shoot she confessed to Vogue magazine that she feels more herself when her boyfriend, photographer Tyrone Lebon, is behind the camera. She explained "Because it's me, versus all the make-up or pretending to be someone else."
The British-born model, and best friend of Cara Delevingne, has spoken openly about battling depression in the past. She revealed to Teen Vogue, "A year after graduating from university I went to treatment for depression, bipolar disorder, and addiction. No one had ever educated me on mental health. I really didn't understand why I would be feeling high on life, and everything was brilliant, and then suddenly I would be crashing into a deep hole." Her beauty and honesty is a breath of fresh air in the industry.
8 Anwar Hadid
The younger brother of Gigi and Bella Hadid, 17-year-old Anwar Hadid is about to make 2017 his time to shine. He popped up on Kendall Jenner's Instagram earlier this year, which set a lot of tongues wagging, and people asking, "Who is he?" But by this time next year, everyone will be able to recognize his signature look as he has signed to IMG models just like his sisters.
Anwar has already walked the runway for Moschino but he has his sights set on bigger things. He told Seventeen, "I want to be an entrepreneur or work in the music business." He added, "My dad (business mogul Mohamed Hadid), came from nothing, so his life is my model for self-made success. It's important for me to find happiness within my own possibilities." Sounds like the teenager is growing up quite fast.
7 Brianna Hildebrand
Deadpool actress 20-year-old Brianna Hildebrand is the poster girl of cool and she won over millions of fans when she came out as gay earlier this year. She tweeted, "Last night my girlfriend and I told ourselves that we bought six bags of Milk Chocolate Eggs because Easter. Today I'm not so sure… " and "I'm trying to sleep but my girlfriend won't stop playing Family Feud on her iPhone." She then revealed that she identifies as a gay woman and the world celebrated her laid back attitude on the issue.
Her role in Deadpool, which was her first feature movie, as Negasonic Teenage Warhead gained her a Teen Choice Awards nomination. She will also make a move into horror films next year as she is set to appear in teen-slasher movie, Tragedy Girls.
6 Melanie Martinez
If you want to make it as a female popstar then try making your act as controversial as possible (see: Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, Ke$ha, etc). 21-year-old Melanie Martinez spent five weeks on 'Team Adam' during The Voice three years ago, but she didn't let missing out on the finals get her down. She has released a string of hits but she has yet to break through to an audience above the age of 13-years-old.
Now the critics are starting to pay attention, with Vogue labeling her "pop's greatest anomaly" and the New York Times praising her "whispery, sardonic, tearful, furious" voice. Her video for Mrs. Potato Head has received more than 20 million hits on YouTube and finally as she chips away into the mainstream market, there's no denying her quirky individual style isn't onto something big.
5 Billie Lourd
Scream Queens star 24-year-old Billie Lourd has been keeping herself busy in-between takes, as she is currently dating her co-star Taylor Lautner. She made the relationship 'Snapchat official' (yes, that is a thing now!) just after Thanksgiving when they were snapped sharing a passionate kiss together. The two are on-screen lovers for the show so maybe rehearsals just became all too real for them.
Alongside a high profile relationship that will keep her name in the gossip columns, Billie appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and she has signed on for another role in the next instalment, which has the working title of Star Wars: Episode VIII. Billie's mother in Star Wars legendary actress Carrie Fisher and her grandmother is Debbie Reynolds, so no matter how huge her own name becomes in 2017 - she is accustomed to showbiz.
4 Lottie Tomlinson
Lottie Tomlinson is tipped to become the "next big thing" since she landed the Nails Inc. campaign this year. The 17-year-old sister of One Direction's Louis Tomlinson has her own quirky, unique style, which will see many fans following in her step. She is also the face of fashion brand Lipsy.
She won't be able to lean on her brother for support with fame as he is taking a step back to be a full-time father to his baby son, Freddie. She told Elle magazine, "I won't have my brother or anyone with me. So I'll have to meet people and make friends. That's the part that's the hardest, just not knowing who I'll be with, when I'm so used to being on tour with people I'm really close with. Hopefully my family will come visit from time to time and make it easier."
3 Lana Condor
Vietnamese-American star Lana Condor is quickly becoming the sci-fi queen as she made her debut as Jubilation Lee in X-Men: Apocalypse and will star as Koyomi K in the upcoming sci-fi flick Alita: Battle Angel due for release next year. Born in Can Tho in Vietnam, she was adopted aged just 4-years-old and grew up in Chicago studying ballet. Her parents encouraged her to try acting, as they believed she had a natural ability for it.
19-year-old Lana voiced her concerns with how "highly-unrepresented" Asian actors are in superhero movies. She told Inverse, "We're highly underrepresented. I love that I'm doing this because I want to show Hollywood that people don't just like this, but it actually works, especially in big blockbusters. I'm hoping I made a small impact for us fellow Asians, in Hollywood and in life."
2 Kelsea Ballerini
Move over, Taylor Swift! 23-year-old country singer Kelsea Ballerini is about to storm the world as she has received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Previous winners of the coveted award have been Sam Smith, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, John Legend and Adele. The singer, who has been around since 2015, is now starting to really come into her own.
Kelsea told E! News, "To me, every awards show is incredible whether its industry-voted or fan-voted. All of it's incredible. But the Grammys is the one. It's top-tier. It's the pinnacle. And just to be thought of as one of the five best new artists of this year is so flattering and so incredible and I'm super honored. With Taylor Swift currently working as her mentor and a leg-up with the Grammy nod - things are going to get pretty huge for Kelsea soon.
1 Cruz Beckham
Cruz Beckham will follow in his mother's footsteps as he has just signed with Justin Bieber's record company and released his debut single, If Every Day Was Christmas. Cruz, whose parents are former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and retired soccer captain David Beckham, will donate all the proceeds from his single to Global's Make Some Noise charity. He told Capital radio, "It's two of my favourite things - singing and Christmas!"
It was actually Victoria who discovered the 11-year-old Bieber-lookalike's singing talents. She revealed on the radio show, "He was just singing in the back of the car one day and I was like, 'Wow, you can really sing.'" Cruz's pop career will be managed by Scotter Braun who has also represented Ariana Grande, Martin Garrix, Psy, Carly Rae Jepsen andThe Wanted.
