20 Male Celebs Who Are Shorter Than You Think
When it comes to the women in the entertainment industry, they're all over the place appearance-wise. Sure, most leading ladies are gorgeous, but that's pretty much where it ends - some are extremely petite, others tower over their male co-stars and could be easily mistaken for models. Some are naturally very slim, others are more curvaceous. Unless there's something specific required of a certain role, there's really no preferred height for actresses in Hollywood or for divas rocking the stage. For their male counterparts, however, it's a different story.
While there are men from all different backgrounds in Hollywood, many of the leading men tend to be physically imposing. They're muscular, they're scruffy, and they're, well, tall. The majority of leading men are taller than their female co-stars or duet partners, whether they're 5'2 or 5'10, because they themselves are typically six feet tall or more. However, there are plenty of exceptions to the rule, and there are many shorter men who have made it big in the entertainment industry. They're so full of talent and personality, though, that it can be easy to assume that they too are men who will tower over any co-star or partner - but that's not the case. Here are 20 male celebs who are shorter than you may have thought.
20 Martin Scorsese (5'3)
In the world of Hollywood, Martin Scorsese is an absolute legend. I mean, he's just a regular guy from Queens who went on to become a writer, director, producer, and more with a career that has stretched across four decades and shows no signs of slowing down. Since he's such a force to be reckoned with, if you haven't seen him, chances are you're thinking of a tall, broad-shouldered gentleman. Instead, he just proves that good things really do come in small packages.
19 Kevin Hart (5'2)
Kevin Hart's height is hard to ignore - particularly since he's often seen hanging out with basketball stars who would seem like giants even besides 6'0 tall men. However, it's not something that bothers the rising superstar comedian. Earlier in his career, his stand up specials included titles like I'm A Grown Little Man and his height is something he addresses in nearly every film project he does - but it's not to offer any explanations, according to Hart, it's just to get it out of the way so people can focus on his talent and his comedy. “I don't believe in doing things to manufacture my body to appeal to what I think people might like,” Hart said in an interview, “This is it. This is what I was given… so how do you not embrace it?”
18 Seth Green (5'4)
Seth Green has had a busy career - he got his start in films like Can't Hardly Wait, Party Monster, and The Italian Job, and his voice made him a good fit for voice over roles, so he added voicing Chris Griffin on Family Guy and Jeff Moreau in the Mass Effect video games to his resume. And, of course, he's also a voice (and director, writer, co-creator, and co-producer) of the stop-motion comedy series Robot Chicken. It's pretty obvious that his height hasn't held him back from succeeding in his career. He's now often spotted on the red carpet alongside his wife, Clare Grant - and at 5'7 without heels, she towers over her husband, but he doesn't care.
17 Charlie Day (5'6)
Charlie Day is a multi-talented performer - he's an actor, producer, musician, comedian, and even screenwriter. He's been in movies like Horrible Bosses and Pacific Rim, but we're betting you know him best from his time playing Charlie Kelly on the sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He might not seem that short because he's still taller than his It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-star and real-life wife Mary Elizabeth Ellis, but that's mostly because she's also incredibly petite - in actuality, Day stands at just 5'6. However, with that scruffy facial hair and insane sense of humour, it's safe to say he remains a babe.
16 Daniel Radcliffe (5'5)
Many actors who start out at child stars shoot up a foot or more in height once they hit puberty, reaching 6 feet or taller in their late teens and early 20s. That wasn't the case for Daniel Radcliffe. When he was a child, Radcliffe snagged the coveted role of Harry Potter in the film series based on J.K. Rowling's books, and basically grew up in front of the public - but he never really grew that tall. Still, due to the fantastical content of the Harry Potter films, Radcliffe got the chance to do things on screen that most action stars could only dream of.
15 Jon Stewart (5'6)
It can be tough to guesstimate comedian Jon Stewart's height because he spent the majority of his career sitting behind a desk - he hosted The Daily Show for over 15 years, from 1999 to 2015. Despite his super-sized stage presence, humour and wit, Stewart himself is not very tall at all - something that you may have found out from Stewart himself, as he often made jokes about his height at his own expense. He's yet another example of how good things come in small packages - it seems that in the comedy world, short guys rule supreme.
14 Usher (5'8)
Chart-topping singer Usher stepped onto the R&B scene when he was just a teenager with silky smooth vocals, and has been tearing up the charts for over 20 years (seriously - his debut album was released in 1994). He's one of the most charming musicians in the game and has great stage presence, so it's easy to assume that he stands at least 6 feet tall, but that's not the case - Usher is actually only 5'8. In fact, his massive list of hit songs might even be taller than him if you wrote them out on a sheet of paper!
13 Josh Hutcherson (5'5)
Josh Hutcherson has been in Hollywood since the early 2000s, landing voice-acting roles as well as starring roles in films like Bridge to Terabithia and Zathura. However, he was absolutely catapulted to superstardom alongside his co-star Jennifer Lawrence when he landed the coveted role of Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games film franchise. He's been busy at work playing the beloved character and crafting a reputation for himself as an A-Lister, but all that talent comes in a small package - Hutcherson is only 5'5. Seeing as Mellark was always described as a physically unremarkable character whose strength (courtesy of lifting sacks of flour at work) was a surprise, Hutcherson is truly the perfect fit.
12 Gael Garcia Bernal (5'6)
Okay, we're going to go ahead and say it - Gael Garcia Bernal is an international dreamboat. The Mexican actor studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London and shortly after landed starring roles in Amores Perros, Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Motorcycle Diaries and more. The star has split his jobs fairly evenly between English-speaking films and the world of Latin cinema, and his popularity in both worlds only continues to grow year after year. He's basically living proof that men can be totally sexy leading men even if they're not above six feet like the majority of the actors in Hollywood.
11 Martin Freeman (5'6)
Okay, given that one of his most famous roles was Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit film franchise, it might not be quite so surprising that Martin Freeman isn't the tallest guy around - after all, Hobbits aren't exactly supposed to tower over anyone. However, a lot can be achieved with careful camerawork in Hollywood, so someone appearing short in a film doesn't necessarily mean they're short in real life - though in Martin Freeman's case it's true. He's won several awards over the years for his roles in various films, and became an even bigger sensation when he played Watson alongside Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes in the BBC drama Sherlock. His most recent role was in Tina Fey's Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, where he played an adventurous freelance photographer.
10 Jason Schwartzman (5'6)
Jason Schwartzman is, quite frankly, a bit of an odd duck. He's known for his collaborations with the whimsical and unique Wes Anderson - he's starred several Anderson projects including Rushmore, The Darjeeling Limited, and The Grand Budapest Hotel. He's also part of one of Hollywood's royal families, the Coppolas. And, to top it all off, he's a musician. With a list of talents and accomplishments like that, you might be surprised to find out that this powerhouse is only 5'6.
9 Kit Harington (5'7)
This one might be the most surprising of all. Kit Harington shot to stardom when he landed the role of Jon Snow on the insanely popular HBO series Game of Thrones (a gig he landed with only a few theatre credits to his name, by the way). He's totally gorgeous on the show, he's buff, and he's frequently by dramatic backdrops in armor and heavy clothing - so, quite frankly, he seems like a force to be reckoned with. Harington is definitely in great shape, and his physique makes you assume that he's the average Hollywood hot guy height of 6'0 or taller - but in actuality, he's only 5'7.
8 Bruno Mars (5'5)
There's just one question we have about Bruno Mars - how on earth does such a small frame contain such a humongous set of pipes!? The singer stepped onto the scene around 2010 and began churning out hits like “Just The Way You Are,” “Grenade” and “Locked Out of Heaven.” He's performed at the Super Bowl, he's cultivated a delightfully retro stage persona, and he's done it all while only standing at 5'5. He has a huge amount of stage presence and charisma packed into a small, impeccably dressed frame.
7 Michael J. Fox (5'4)
Canadian Michael J. Fox started booking gigs in the early 1980s, but it was his role as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy from 1985 to 1990 that truly cemented his star status. He followed it up with roles on the successful television shows Family Ties and Spin City, making himself into a household name. For the past 10-15 years, Fox has mostly worked as a voice-over actor, but there's no doubt that he has a lot of star power. However, did you know that he's extremely petite, standing at only 5'4?
6 Prince (5'2)
If you don't know who Prince is, let's be honest, you don't know music - he's a big, big deal. The American singer, songwriter, and multi-talented musician put Minneapolis on the map and continues to influence musicians to this day. His unique style combines a variety of genres, and he's been churning out hits for decades - including penning hits for other musicians as a prolific songwriter. Anyone who has ever seen him perform live (or, quite frankly, even just on video) knows that he's an absolute superstar on the stage and seems to grow to about ten feet tall when the spotlight is on him. In real life, though, he's a teeny 5'2!
5 Robert Downey Jr. (5'9)
Okay, we'll admit that 5'9 isn't exactly short, but for some reason many people tend to assume that Robert Downey Jr. is at least 6'0 tall, if not much taller. Perhaps it's because he wears the Iron Man costume so much and it makes him appear larger than life? Either way, this jokester's rise and fall and meteoric rise again is the stuff of Hollywood history, so it's easy to assume that he's a physically enormous man - but really, it's just his talent that stretches to the sky.
4 Jack Black (5'6)
Jack Black has made a name for himself playing goofy, over-the-top characters in films like School of Rock, Nacho Libre, and Tropic Thunder - and he's also been the lead vocalist of the comedic rock group Tenacious D for over 20 years. The California-born comedian has poked fun at his appearance throughout his career, as despite landing several leading male roles in films like Shallow Hal and The Holiday, he doesn't quite fit the stereotypical image of a Hollywood leading man - and that includes his height. Though Black has a super-sized personality, he's only 5'6.
3 Emilio Estevez (5'4)
Emilio Estevez hasn't been in the limelight for quite a while, but fans of the Brat Pack know exactly who he is - he was basically the 80s' equivalent of Harry Styles in One Direction. He starred in 80s classics like The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire and The Outsiders, crafting quite a name for himself as a young rising star. He took a bit of a step back recently, but thanks to his ultra-connected family (his father Martin Sheen and brother Charlie Sheen are both involved in the entertainment industry as well) he's never out of the tabloids for long.
2 Elijah Wood (5'6)
When he was a young, 20 year old actor just starting out, Elijah Wood managed to snag the coveted role of Frodo Baggins in the hugely successful The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The rest, as they say, is history - after he created a name for himself in Peter Jackson's epic films, he basically had his pick of film roles, and he took unique roles in movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Everything Is Illuminated, as well as on the television show Wilfred. Given his rise to fame as a hobbit, a notoriously small creation of Tolkien's, it might not be surprising that Elijah Wood isn't six feet tall - but did you know that he's actually only 5'6?
1 Javier Bardem (5'7)
Spanish actor Javier Bardem grew up in the entertainment industry in a family full of actors, and was frequently granted access to film and theatre sets as a child. In fact, his first film role was alongside his mother Pilar in the movie The Ages of Lulu. The young Bardem impressed the director, and he soon started scoring film roles left and right, and even won the admiration of Hollywood legends like Francis Ford Coppola. While the actor was initially reluctant to take on English-speaking film roles, he eventually transitioned from Spanish cinema to the red carpets of Hollywood - and the 5'7 leading man snagged himself a super sexy Spanish wife, Penelope Cruz, in the process.
