11 Girly Shows You Should Be Watching
One of the greatest pleasures in life is curling up on the couch on a Saturday night, just you and your fave shows to keep you company (okay, maybe you're enjoying some pizza, too). Everyone has different tastes when it comes to TV and luckily for us, there are more than enough TV shows to go around. Want something super dramatic and cheesy? An adorable sitcom? A serious, critically acclaimed drama that sweeps the Emmy awards every year? You name it, you can find it. But for us women, the best are super girly TV series that are total guilty pleasures. But you don't really have to feel guilty about something that makes you smile, laugh, and all-around entertains you. Here are 11 girly shows that you definitely should be watching. The pizza toppings are up to you.
11 The Real Housewives
If you haven't jumped on The Real Housewives train, well, what are you waiting for? This super popular reality franchise has it all: catty arguments, petty competition, tables being thrown across the room (yes, really). You can pick any city but the most entertaining cities are definitely New York, Orange County, and Beverly Hills. The housewives go on crazy shopping sprees and stay at the most amazing resorts when they travel and it's just really enjoyable to watch. You might get some flak from your boyfriend, your mom or even some of your friends for watching this show, but that's okay. They're totally missing out on all the fun.
10 Girlfriend's Guide To Divorce
This is Bravo channel's first foray into scripted programming and it's been worth the wait. If this show was a color, it would be bright pink. It's hard to find a girlier show: the main character, Abby McCarthy, is a former bestselling author of a non-fiction advice series. Now she's getting divorced, as the series title would suggest, and her life is a mess… but a hot pink mess, really. She's got a bunch of fun girlfriends along for the ride and you can cheer her on as she tries to make her writing career a success yet again.
9 Pretty Little Liars
Are you watching this super creepy murder mystery? Why not? It's all the rage on social media and you probably have more than a few good friends who are completely obsessed. The four main characters Hanna, Aria, Spencer, and Emily are super cute, super funny, and super smart girls who were put through the ringer in high school and basically stalked by an anonymous figure named A. Now the show is in its sixth season and features a whole new mysterious storyline and a whole new stalker. It's worth a binge-watching session (or a million), if only for the amazing outfits that each girl wears in each episode.
8 Jane The Virgin
If you've never even heard of this show, no one could blame you - it's definitely been flying under the radar, but it's a super girly show that you won't want to miss. It has the same campy tone as Ugly Betty and is about Jane who is, well, a virgin who ends up pregnant through a crazy mix-up at a hospital. Oops. She lives with her amazing and hilarious family and the cast of characters is too much fun… plus the narrator has a cheesy, Spanish telenova kind of voice that adds a level of soap opera enjoyment to the show.
7 Teen Mom OG
Did you catch the MTV reality series 16 And Pregnant from way back when? What about the spin-off, Teen Mom? You definitely need to add the latest version, Teen Mom OG, to your girly TV show list. The show features the original four cast members - Farrah, Maci, Catelynn, and Amber - and is pretty fun, funny, and inspiring. It's great to see how these four former teen moms have turned into such awesome young women. This is definitely enjoyable reality TV with a social message, and that's always a good combo.
6 unREAL
Last summer, a fascinating and fun show premiered on Lifetime: unREAL. It's a drama about people who work on a reality TV show that's basically The Bachelor (still with me?). Shiri Appleby stars as a super tough producer who will do anything to make the show the best it can be - as in, the worst it can be, since both the show and the-show-within-the-show feature some pretty shady people doing pretty shady things. Catch up on season one quick before the season two premiere (hopefully sometime soon - it hasn't been announced just yet).
5 Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
This musical romantic comedy (yup, it's a mash-up of those two amazing genres) premiered in Fall 2015 and only gets better with each new episode. The main character, Rachel, is a super depressed and miserable NYC lawyer who moves to a small, weird California town after learning that her junior high summer camp boyfriend is moving there. The show has tons of jokes, more awkward moments than you can possibly count, and features lots of musical numbers. It's the most fun you could possibly have just sitting at home and staring at a screen.
4 How To Get Away With Murder
At first glance this show may not seem all that girly, but it totally counts because it's full of girl power - specifically because it's part of Shondaland, the best place in the world. The great Shonda Rhimes is behind this juicy drama which is currently in its second season. It's another murder mystery like Pretty Little Liars except it features five law students who work for their prof. Annalise Keating who may or may not be kind of crazy (in the best possible way). The performances are all awesome and Liza Weil who played Paris on Gilmore Girls stars as well, so that's yet another reason to tune in.
3 Younger
This sitcom from Darren Star (who brought us the glorious Beverly Hills 90210) stars the lovely Sutton Foster as Liza, a fortysomething who is pretending to be in her 20s and hoping that her trendy New York world doesn't find out the truth. Hilary Duff is adorable as always as Kelsey, Sutton's publishing company coworker and BFF. This show is as girly as it can get with fashion advice, love scenes between Liza and her hunky younger tattoo artist boyfriend Josh, and lots of parties. Hey, you're only young once (or, um, twice).
2 Bunheads
Another TV gem starring Sutton Foster, Bunheads was created by none other than Gilmore Girls showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino. It's about a former showgirl who quits her party girl lifestyle in Vegas and moves to a small town in California. She ends up helping teach ballet to teenage girls with Emily Gilmore (okay, not Emily Gilmore but the actress that played her, Kelly Bishop). It's funny, it's girly and above all, it's a really heartwarming story about becoming who you are and merging your past, present, and your hopes for the future.
1 Drop Dead Diva
This drama stars a shallow woman Deb, who used to be a blonde bombshell… until she died. Yup. Now she's come back to life as an overweight lawyer, Jane, and has to relearn how to live, but this time she can't be quite so judgmental and ridiculous. It's worth watching for the fiery court scenes since it turns out Deb/Jane is awesome at getting her way but it's also just plain girly fun with tons of romance and tension to keep your interest. So go ahead - the TV is totally yours tonight (and this weekend, too).
