13 Celebs Who Cleaned Up Their Act
It seems like every single week there's news about a celebrity checking into rehab. It's become so common that it's pretty easy to forget who's been in the past. Drugs and alcohol are common issues but celebs have gone to rehab for other issues, too. Here are 13 celebs who have been to rehab, some of which might actually surprise you. A few of them have even gone twice or more, although you wouldn't know it by looking at them today.
13 Kelly Osbourne
In 2004, Kelly Osbourne checked herself into Promises in Malibu for an addiction to prescription painkillers. A year later, she relapsed and checked herself into Las Encinas hospital. She ended up back in treatment in 2009 for a month. But apparently that wasn't it. She has said, “I've been to rehab seven times and to two mental institutions. My mum even had me put in a padded cell once to scare me." Kelly turned her life around when she realized her addiction was affecting her life and relationships.
12 Britney Spears
These days Britney seems to be doing (and looking) amazing, but she's another pop star who spent some time getting rehabilitated. In 2007, Britney was going through a very public custody battle with her ex Kevin Federline among other things, and one day she just sort of snapped. Britney shaved her head and attacked a paparazzo with an umbrella… which was all caught on film. It wasn't exactly her finest day, but she subsequently checked into Promises in Malibu and got back on the road to recovery.
11 Zac Efron
Zac Efron landed in rehab in 2013 for alcoholism, but some sources said otherwise. According to some people, Zac wasn't showing up to work on the set of his film Neighbors and was actually struggling with drugs like cocaine and Molly in addition to alcohol. He opened up about why he needed to find sobriety, explaining the difficulty of being hounded by the press everywhere you go: "You spend a lot of time in your house, going crazy and pretty soon you need a social lubricant."
10 Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers has been to rehab multiple times thanks to his alcoholism, and has even been photographed drinking from a bottle of vodka on the street in broad daylight following some of those stays. It took six stays in rehab and a hospitalization after a suicide attempt to make him see the light.
9 Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez seems like a pretty unlikely candidate for rehab since she doesn't seem to get into a whole lot of trouble, so you might have forgotten that she went. The songstress did not check into rehab over addiction issues, however -- she later revealed that she needed the time after she was diagnosed with lupus and went through chemotherapy.
8 Joshua Jackson
The former Dawson's Creek star was once arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct at a hockey game. He supposedly grabbed a security guard and punched him. He was ordered to check into rehab and complete 15 hours of alcohol and substance abuse education and 24 hours of community service. The prosecutors were willing to drop the assault charges if he could successfully do that and stay out of trouble, which he did.
7 Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore went to rehab for the first time when she was only 13, and ended up there twice. After being a super famous child star thanks to E.T. the actress succumbed to all the temptations of Hollywood, having her first drink at the age of nine, tried marijuana at ten, and then cocaine at 12. She ended up staying in what she called the "institution" for 18 months to get clean and her life back on track.
6 Carrie Fisher
Carrie Fisher has been to rehab as well as some psych units. She was even hospitalized once for a drug overdose. The Star Wars actress has admitted that "we did cocaine on the set of Empire in the Ice Planet" and that even actor John Belushi warned her that she had an issue with drugs -- John died of an overdose in 1982. Carrie was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 24, and suffered with abuse for about 20 years before getting totally sober.
5 Nicole Richie
It's hard to recall Nicole Richie being anything other than a hilarious reality star, designer, business woman, and family gal, but she did have some wild times in the past. In 2003, Nicole went to rehab after she was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance (police supposedly found heroin in her car). Nicole eventually cleaned up her act and didn't look back once she landed the reality show The Simple Life alongside Paris Hilton.
4 Catherine Zeta Jones
The actress checked into rehab several times because of her bipolar disorder. The first time was in 2011, and she completed a 30-day program in 2013. She and her husband Michael Douglas have been quite open about the disorder and haven't hid anything from the public.
3 Eva Mendes
Actress Eva Mendes has been laying pretty low since giving birth to Ryan Gosling's baby, but back in 2008 she was laying low for a different reason. There was tons of speculation about why she made the decision to check into rehab, but she must have handed the situation since we never heard about it again. At the time her rep only said, "Eva has been working hard for the past year and made a positive decision to take some much-needed time off to proactively attend to some personal issues that, while not critical, she felt deserved some outside professional support."
2 Keith Urban
Keith Urban had only been married to Nicole Kidman for four months back in 2006 when he checked into rehab for alcohol and drug addiction, which was his third stay in eight years. He credits his addiction with giving his marriage a "foundation."
1 Demi Moore
Demi Moore headed to rehab following her 2011 divorce from Ashton Kutcher. The actress checked herself into Cirque Lodge in Sundance Utah for both anorexia as well as substance abuse issues. According to some publications Demi also went to rehab back in the mid-1980s before shooting St. Elmo's Fire but had remained sober since the birth of her children. Prior to her 2011 rehab experience, Demi had also been hospitalized for what seemed like seizures following a night doing whip-its.
