13 Reasons 'Younger' Perfectly Depicts Millennials

Once upon a time, a little show called Sex and the City premiered on HBO and the world went absolutely wild. Suddenly there were women, on TV, chatting about their intimate lives. They were seen as real human beings who had hopes and dreams and actually thought about bedroom activities instead of just pretending that stuff didn't exist. Now there's a new show on TV that you've probably heard of. It stars a similarly adorable, witty, clever, beautiful and fashionable woman, and oh yeah, it was also created by SATC's creator, Darren Star. Sutton Foster (who is also going to be in the upcoming Netflix Gilmore Girls revival, which is awesome because she's the greatest) stars as Liza. She's recently gone through a divorce and pretty much hates her boring forty-something existence in New Jersey. She can't get a job since she was out of the job market for so long raising her daughter and generally being a housewife. The light bulb goes on: if she says she's 26, she'll get the job. So she lies about her age and gets an awesome publishing job. Here are 13 reasons Younger just totally gets us millennials and is the perfect depiction of this time in our lives.

13 It Gets That Texting Sucks

In almost every single episode of this show, Liza has a texting situation. She's staring at her iPhone with her artist roomie, Maggie, wondering how she should respond to her hot twenty something tattoo artist boyfriend, Josh. She jokes about "the three dots" when you can tell the other person is typing but they keep disappearing since they haven't figured out how to respond to you yet. Ugh. This show just really understands that our preferred method of communication is texting, but despite that fact, we're still super confused about what we should say to people.

12 We Have Our Own Language

Us millennials are a pretty unique bunch of human beings. We have our own sayings like YOLO and we say stuff that makes total sense to us but probably confuses older people a whole lot. One of Younger's best characters is Lauren. She's BFFs with Liza's work BFF, Kesley, played by the super adorable Hilary Duff. Lauren says the weirdest, most hilarious things you could ever find on TV. You definitely have a friend like that if you're in your 20s -- the one who is bold and wild and never apologizes for who she is.

11 We Live In Tiny Apartments

When Liza goes over to Josh's apartment for the first time, she seems a bit freaked out by how crazy messy and small it is… plus the fact that he's sharing with a bunch of roommates. Most of us have roommates, or at least one, and if we're lucky enough to live on our own, we're not exactly living in the lap of luxury. Younger is one show that doesn't shy away from the fact that being in your 20s can seriously suck sometimes. Case in point: Kelsey and Lauren are living with Lauren's parents. Yup.

    10 Guys Can Be Immature

Josh's roommates lie around all day and evening long playing video games. Um, what happened to getting some fresh air and, you know, actually leaving the house? It's a super millennial thing that some guys don't know how to grow up, are super immature, and love to play those video games. Seriously, when did that become such a popular past time? But Josh's friends aren't the only immature guys on the show -- there's also Thad, Kelsey's boyfriend-turned-fiance (no spoilers in case you haven't seen the latest crazy episode). Most of us are dating around and not exactly meeting the most mature people on the planet, so we can relate.

9 Our Friends Help Us Survive

One of the best parts about Younger is Liza's evolving friendship with Kelsey. Although there's a huge age difference and Liza hasn't told Kelsey the most important thing about herself, the two are still becoming closer and closer with each episode. They help each other through work issues, feeling they're just not good enough, break ups, boy problems, and just about anything else. It definitely reminds you of your own best friendship.

8 We're All Keeping Something Secret

Sure, Liza's big secret is pretty massive -- and it's not likely that you or your friends are hiding something quite as huge. But you don't always share every single thing about your life, professional or otherwise, with the people closest to you, especially in your 20s. Everyone has a reputation to uphold, especially thanks to social media, and you want even your best friends to think that you've got your crap together. So this series really understands that we're all hiding something.

7 Life Sucks In Our 20s

Let's just be real here: your 20s can be really, really hard. It's definitely the hardest decade of your life, and you thought that high school took the cake in that department. Nope. You're figuring out your job, wondering if you're ever going to meet the love of your live, dealing with jealous friends, dating awful guys, dating good guys that end up breaking your heart, and wondering if you're living up to your potential. On Younger, Kelsey is often highly emotional and worried about something, and you definitely are her (or at least have a friend like her).

    6 We Drink A Lot

Okay, it's not like us millennials are alcoholics, but we do like to blow off steam and head to a bar on a weeknight or weekend. We need it and we deserve it. We work hard and want to play just as hard -- while we still can. We know that when we're in our 30s and beyond life is going to get a whole lot more complicated, so we're going to live it up while we still can. Younger has some hilarious scenes of Josh and Liza drinking shots, and of course Liza is super drunk the next morning because while she may look like a twenty-something, she's just not built for those kind of killer hangovers anymore.

5 We Dress Like It's Still The 90s

In case you've been living under a rock, you've probably noticed that we love the 90s. Like really love them. Thanks to stores like Urban Outfitters, we're dressing like it's still that fabulous decade. We love our plaid shirts and skirts and all that. Liza definitely wears that kind of 90s-inspired clothing on a daily basis and she looks super stylish. She wears tons of plaid dresses, oversize flowered blazers, Doc Martens, and beanies. You basically want every single thing she wears. Sigh.

    4 We're Ambitious

Kelsey is an amazing and inspiring character because not only is she an editor at a super young age, but the publishing company gives her her own imprint, too -- called Millennial, naturally. She's an ambitious young woman who wants the world and wants it right now. What the show gets right, though, is that Kelsey often feels super insecure and like a total impostor. She freaks out the night of the launch party and doesn't want to make her speech because she thinks she just has no clue what she's doing. It's so nice for a TV show to recognize that we're not all conceited and we don't all believe we know everything.

3 We Deal With Mean Bosses

Even if your current job is a total joy and dream and your boss is the best person in the world, you've most likely suffered through a terrible work experience before that involved the worst boss ever. Liza's boss Diana is pretty awful. She's basically Meryl Streep's The Devil Wears Prada character and loves to boss everyone around. Eventually, by season two's end, you realize that she's got some soft spots (mostly the fact that she's still alone at her age) but it's comforting to realize that difficult managers are a rite of passage for twentysomethings and pretty normal.

    2 We Feel Pretty Lost

Liza gets tons of advice and help from Kelsey at the office, and that just proves that although we can pretend that we got it all together and know what we're doing, we really don't. We're pretty lost most of the time (or, um, all the time… no shame here) and if we don't surround ourselves with good, smart people who are willing to help us along the way, we're never going to end up where we want to go.

    1 We Try Our Best

We don't have the answers, and maybe we never will -- judging from the fact that Liza is basically living out her 20s for the second time and is even more confused than she was the first time around. But we're all just moving forward, trying our best, living our lives and hoping that we don't mess up too badly. If we do, though, we know that we can have our friends to lean on, even if we just send them a quick late-night text message. Ultimately, Younger totally understands that twentysomething feeling of stumbling around, making decisions when you don't feel qualified to do so, and hoping against hope that everyone will work out.
