14 Celebrities That Actually Run Their Own Twitter Accounts

It's more fun to believe that celebrities are the ones running their own Twitter accounts, giving us an exclusive real-time glimpse into their lives, views and opinions. But much to our dismay, most celebrities hand over their social media responsibilities to trusty PR reps to tweet on their behalf.

After all, outsourcing all social networking is probably the easiest way for busy celebrities to remain visible enough for fans, but to manage their brand and reputations efficiently. Ashton Kutcher, Kanye West, Adam Levine, 50 Cent and Britney Spears are among the many celebs whose Twitter accounts are managed from the smartphones of assistants.

There's always an exception to the rule, however. Some celebrities actually prefer to be their own social media managers. Whether they're tweeting about other celebrities, inventing hashtags, cracking witty one-liners or responding to fans, here are 14 celebrities who tweet their own 140 characters.

14 Khloe Kardashian @khloekardashian

As a reality TV star, Khloe Kardashian doesn't fake it when it comes to tweeting. Most of her tweets are family related, and several photos of her siblings, Kim, Kiley, Kourtney and Kendall can be found throughout her feed, as well as clips from her new reality TV show, Kocktails with Khloe.

The rest of Khloe's tweets are mostly selfies of her outfits, makeup, hair, promotions for her app, and mentions of personal drama. But regardless of what she tweets, one thing's for sure- she's giving fans exactly what they want to see: the real Khloe.

13 Sofia Vergara @sofiavergara

The Colombian actress who's best known for her role as Gloria on Modern Family is another celebrity who manages her own Twitter account. How can you tell? She tweets in both English and Spanish, gives shout outs to her co-stars and uses no shortage of punctuation or emoticons, which is almost exactly how you'd expect her personality to be on social media.

Another reason to follow Sofia is that she actually retweets fans. Although her replies usually consist of a dancing emotion, or a smiley face emoji with its tongue sticking out, she still acknowledges the tweets she's mentioned in, which is something not all celebrities do through their Twitter accounts.

12 Cher @cher

You can certainly tell Cher runs her own Twitter account because she uses it as a channel to voice her opinions- and we like it.

Most recently, the 69-year-old pop singer has been voicing her opinion about the 2016 presidential election in the United States, with Donald Trump being a hot topic (of her distaste) in several tweets.

Cher also tweets occasional family photos, frequently types in caps lock and uses plenty of emojis to express her thoughts (especially the poop emoji when referencing Donald Trump). Cher's Twitter account is a treat to follow for her fans because she's uncensored and authentic, and gives us a real glimpse into her life, even when she's keeping it low key in the media.

11 Shaquille O'Neal @SHAQ

It's rumored the retired NBA star, best known as Shaq, said “If I am going to speak, it will come from me”. A quote that he's also applied to his social media accounts.

Shaq uses Twitter to communicate directly to fans, while he also retweets and mentions other celebrities, such as Anna Faris and Ellen DeGeneres. He also uploads behind the scenes video clips and past photos from his NBA career for fans to see. It's doubtful that any of his 12 million followers are disappointed by what they see in his Twitter feed.

10 Dean McDermott @imdeanmcdermott

When it comes to Dean McDermott's Twitter account, it's questionable whether or not all of his tweets are written by the reality TV star himself. While some of his tweets are slightly bland and generic sounding (which suggests a third party is tweeting for him), Dean has made an authentic appearance on social media before when defending his wife, Tori Spelling.

Dean McDermott has also been known to post videos to talk directly to fans, and he lets fans know when he'll be live tweeting. In recent tweets about his new show, Slasher Series, Dean announced he'd be watching the first episode at the same time as his fans, and communicated with (and retweeted fans) during the show. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star is no stranger to social media. In fact, her followers would probably be concerned if a day went by that an infamous Kim “butt selfie” didn't show up in their newsfeeds. But aside from posting provocative photos, Kim also communicates with fans and other celebrities on her Twitter account.

Most recently, Kim received extra Twitter fame for throwing heated tweets at Bette Midler and Chloe Grace Moretz when they shamed her for posting a nude selfie. Many people thought her husband, Kanye West, had hijacked her Twitter account based on the tone of the insults- but Kim insists it was all her.

8 Miley Cyrus @mileycyrus

Miley Cyrus has taken to Twitter to call out her Dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, more than once or twice. Her personal tweets suggest she's running her own Twitter account, at least some of the time.

Miley's also been known to upload selfies of her smoking weed, videos speaking of her political opinions, doing yoga and supporting the LGBT community. The rest of Miley's tweets are mostly brand related, with upcoming concert dates, guest appearances on TV shows and makeup endorsements. Either way, Miley's always had our attention for one reason or another (though, it's usually something to do with her tongue) and she seems to keeps fans engaged on her Twitter account.

7 Ellen DeGeneres @TheEllenShow

Ellen says her tweets are real in her Twitter bio, so we'll believe her. After all, her tweets are just as hilarious as she is, and make for a thoroughly entertaining Twitter feed to scroll through.

She posts the best highlights from her show, Ellen, and posts photoshopped selfies that get tens of thousands of retweets. In one of her recent tweets, Ellen swapped out Jennifer Aniston's face on the cover of People Magazine for her own, when Jennifer Aniston was named “Most Beautiful Woman in the World”. Ellen also regularly tweets to other celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Seth Rogen and Kelly Clarkson.

6 Lena Dunham @lenadunham

Lena Dunham did run her own Twitter account herself, until she became the center of a body shaming conversation that was sparked when she uploaded a half-nude selfie. After the verbal attack from Twitter users, which the 29-year-old actress referred to as “verbal violence”, Lena decided to hand over her Twitter account responsibilities to someone else and declared it an unsafe space for her.

While it's a shame that negativity surrounded her Twitter account at all, Lena said she decided not to shut down her Twitter profile because of the relationship with her fans. Although she says she personally doesn't have access to her Twitter account, she still controls what's said in tweets and has an assistant send them.

5 Jimmy Fallon @jimmyfallon

Jimmy Fallon usually makes references to Twitter on his show, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, so it makes sense that he'd be an active user on the social network himself.

The television host has also been known to invent his own hashtags such as #MySiblingIsWeird and #WeddingFail and #IfIWonPowerBall to spark conversation with fans on Twitter, and then shares the replies on his show.

Jimmy also engages fans by responding directly to their tweets. In one of his recent tweets, a fan asked him to follow 3 tagged friends, and Jimmy replied “Sure!”. His Twitter feed also shows tweets to other celebrities, such as Russell Crowe, Cameron Diaz and Steve Martin.

4 Lance Armstrong @lancearmstrong

Lance Armstrong is a former professional cyclist and cancer survivor, who used to date singer, Sheryl Crow. His tweets primarily revolve around cycling, good causes, charity work with his foundation, Livestrong and creating awareness around cancer.

He also responds to fans and friends and retweets relevant celebrity news and current events. One of the most charming aspects of following Lance's Twitter account is how he directly supports others who are dealing with cancer. In a recent tweet, he responded “Wooohooo! Congrats” to a fan who tweeted about being cleared from cancer.

3 Adele @adele

Adele was always in charge of running her own Twitter account, until she admitted to drunk tweeting in an interview.

On the Graham Norton BBC show, she was quoted “I'm not a drinker any more, but when Twitter first came out, I was drunk tweeting and nearly put my foot in it quite a few times, so my management decided that you have to go through two people and then it has to be signed off by someone”, referring to any tweets or messages that can get posted. She still takes credit for her tweets though, and added “they're all my tweets. No one writes my tweets. They just post them for me”.

Adele's made many comebacks in her music career, perhaps she'll make one with her Twitter account.

Steve Martin is known for being funny on screen, but his witty humor translates directly to his Twitter feed.

It's evident the actor, comedian, and frequent guest on the Today show runs his own Twitter feed based on his hilarious responses to fans. In fact, some of the most entertaining tweets in Steve Martin's Twitter feed are his responses to fans. He seems to respond most to the tweets that have spelling and grammar errors, so if you want Steve Martin to tweet to you, maybe that's the way to do it.

Rainn Wilson is best known for his role as Dwight Schrute on The Office. His personality comes through on his Twitter feed, mostly with witty comments about world views and current events.

Rainn Wilson also founded Soul Pancake, a new media company that focuses on creating inspiring content and other “stuff that matters”. It's unknown whether Rainn contributes to Soul Pancake's tweets or not, but @SoulPancake is still a Twitter account worth following. The @SoulPancake tweets ask thought provoking questions such as “What did you do today that you'll actually remember?” and open discussions such as “What makes a good friend?”.
