15 Celeb Couples You Didn't Know Broke Up
Celebrity relationships are definitely an obsession for us, no doubt about it. It seems like celebs like to date at lightning speed and some even start a new relationship before their current one even ends. As much as we're all fascinated with the romantic endeavors of the rich and famous, it can be pretty daunting to keep up with their exceedingly active love lives. While the breakups and makeups of big name stars usually stir up a media frenzy, there are some celeb couples that are able to fly under the radar and avoid the public shame of a super bad breakup by quietly parting ways. As hard as it is to believe, sometimes we don't even know that our favorite celeb couples have broken up until long after their love has fizzled out. Don't just take our word for it, here are 15 celeb couples that you didn't know broke up. Some of these will definitely shock you.
15 Tarek And Christina El Moussa
For the past three years, married couple Tarek and Christina El Moussa have starred in HGTV's hit home makeover show, Flip or Flop. The power duo worked together to purchase, renovate, and resell distressed houses for a higher profit and they became instant celebrities. We were all smitten with Tarek and Christina's love story. The former real estate agents met at work and tied the knot in 2009. They have a six-year-old daughter and a son who's a year old. The pair developed an even deeper bond when Tarek realized he had cancer thanks to a viewer reaching out to them about a noticeable lump in his throat.
From the outside looking in, it seemed like Tarek and Christina were meant to go the distance, but the reality stars quietly parted ways in May of this year. The media didn't catch wind of their split until they formally announced their separation in December, and since then the rumor mill has been buzzing with stories about how the seemingly perfect pair wasn't so perfect after all. It was revealed that the police were called to their home back in May over a scary domestic dispute that the El Moussa's brushed off as a mere "misunderstanding." There has also been talk of Tarek having a relationship with their 23-year-old nanny and Christina being romantically linked to a man who has done work for them in the past. Fans of Flip or Flop were obviously shaken up when Tarek and Christina decided to call it quits, but what's even more shocking is that no one even knew about their breakup until seven months after it happened!
14 Jennifer Lopez And Casper Smart
Of course, we all know that Jennifer Lopez is almost too hot to handle, and her bountiful love life has been heating up entertainment headlines for the better part of a decade. We've seen Jennifer romance some of Hollywood's most eligible bachelors like Sean "P.Diddy" Combs, Ben Affleck, and Marc Anthony. Most recently, Jenny from the block has been in an on-again/off-again love affair with her backup dancer, Casper Smart. When they started dating in 2011, they shocked fans since Smart is eighteen years younger. J.Lo and Casper's relationship was often a topic of interest in the media, with rumors swirling about their breakups, makeups, and scandalous affairs. The pair split up in 2014 only to reconcile a few months later.
When they split up in August 2016, there wasn't a whole lot of fuss made about J.Lo's newly single status. Part of the reason why few people are aware of Jennifer and Casper's split is likely because they get together and breakup so often that the public just can't keep up. Another reason? Jennifer's career is on fire right now and her success has taken precedence over her roller-coaster love life. Let's face it, Jennifer and Casper will probably pick back up where they left off and it will be like they never even separated in the first place!
13 Drew Barrymore And Will Kopelman
We hate to admit it, but when it comes to long lasting relationships, Drew Barrymore doesn't exactly have the best track record. Her turbulent love life dates back to 1991 when she was engaged to Leland Hayward, the grandson of a famous Hollywood producer. The young couple called off their engagement and then Drew got engaged to actor Jamie Walters the following year. By 1994, Drew had finally made it down the aisle with a man named Jeremy Thomas… only to get divorced two months later. Drew married actor Tom Green in 2001 but they got divorced the following year.
The actress had a number of rocky romances in between her failed marriages, and when she met art consultant Will Kopelman in 2011, it seemed like Drew had finally found her soulmate. The pair got married and welcomed two daughters over the next few years, and we were all convinced that reformed wild child Drew was finally in a good place when it came to finding love. Unfortunately, Drew filed for divorce in July 2016 and it was finalized just three weeks later. Unless you're a super fan, Barrymore and Kopelman's divorce isn't exactly common knowledge for a few reasons. For one thing, the two split in an extremely amicable way. They remain close friends and are dedicated to co-parenting. Additionally, Drew Barrymore is notorious for having speedy romances, so it comes as no surprise that she has gotten divorced for a third time.
12 Casey Affleck And Summer Phoenix
Actors Casey Affleck and Summer Phoenix have been together for what seems like an eternity (especially for Hollywood relationships). The pair met in 1995 when Summer's brother, Joaquin Phoenix, starred with Casey in the film To Die For. Casey and Summer were close friends for ages and eventually true love blossomed. The couple made things official in 2000, and by 2006, the longtime lovers were married. They have two sons, Indiana and Atticus. This duo seemed to have everything all figured out, but they surprisingly announced their split in March 2016 after a decade of marriage.
Casey Affleck is currently promoting his highly-anticipated film, Manchester By The Sea, and his career is about to skyrocket to new heights as the movie is already generating tons of Oscar buzz for the seasoned star. While it's interesting that his professional life is flourishing while his personal life is falling apart, it seems like his failed marriage has been overshadowed by his acting. Fortunately for Affleck and Phoenix, not many media outlets have been too focused on their divorce, leaving many in the dark about the two breaking up at all.
11 Kirsten Dunst And Garrett Hedlund
It feels like the last time we heard about Naya Rivera in the press, she was gushing about her husband, Ryan Dorsey, while promoting the release of her memoir. Ryan and Naya's relationship was an interesting one from the start. In July of 2014, Naya was set to marry rapper, Big Sean, but the two had a nasty breakup since he cheated on his bride-to-be with Arianna Grande. In quite possibly the strangest plot twist ever, Naya went ahead and made full use of her wedding venue and dress by marrying another guy on the same day she was supposed to marry Sean. That guy was was Ryan Dorsey, her former boyfriend.
The couple exchanged “I do's” and had a son Josey the following year. Everything seemed to be on the up and up for Rivera and Dorsey until the release of her tell-all book in 2016. The book was filled with some seriously juicy gossip about the set of Glee and her previous relationships, but Rivera only wrote about her husband in a super positive light. Unfortunately for Naya and Ryan, their fast-paced romance came to an end almost as quickly as it began, and the pair filed for divorce last November. Because the entire rise and fall of their relationship happened at lightning speed, most people probably don't even know that these two are totally done.
9 Kate Beckinsale And Len Wiseman
Kate Beckinsale and Len Wiseman first met while filming Underworld in 2003. Apparently, the pair really hit it off because they got married in 2004. At the time, Wiseman was married and his then-wife alleged that he had linked up with Kate. Beckinsale and her beau had been married for twelve years when pictures of Wiseman on a string of romantic outings with a much younger actress named CJ Franco became public.
Naturally, it looked like Len was cheating on her but little did we all know that Kate and Len had actually been separated for some time before the paparazzi photos were taken. Instead of a cheating scandal, Kate and Len talked about the details of their impending divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences” on the court documents. Typically, gossip outlets are the first to know when a celebrity couple is on the rocks, but what makes this breakup interesting is that nobody had any idea the couple had parted ways until one of them went public with someone else!
8 Liev Schreiber And Naomi Watts
Actors Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts spent a wonderful eleven years together and were one of Hollywood's most seemingly solid couples. But the couple jointly announced their shocking separation in September of 2016. These two have been together for so long, it's likely that many don't even realize that they are now apart. For quite some time, there has been speculation as to whether or not the pair was actually legally married, but in 2010 Watts told reporters that she had received a ring from her longtime love.
Three years later, the Ray Donovan star referred to Naomi as his wife, confirming once and for all that the two had secretly gotten hitched. The Schreibers welcomed two sons in 2007 and 2008, and they totally seemed like the ultimate picture perfect Hollywood couple. Those in-the-know were stunned to learn that the twosome had broken up. The former husband and wife released a statement saying, “Over the past few months we've come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple." While news of their split has been made super public, it can be easy to see why many wouldn't be quick to acknowledge that these two are actually done for good.
7 Brooklyn Beckham And Chloe Grace Moretz
For the longest time, teenage stars Brooklyn Beckham and Chloe Grace Moretz kept us all guessing as to whether or not they were just friends or something more. David and Victoria Beckham's son first met the American actress in 2014 while taking a SoulCycle class in Los Angeles. The adorable lovebirds were often seen holding hands and they posted pictures of each other on social media. But when asked about their romance, they were pretty tight-lipped.
During an episode of Watch What Happens Live in May 2016, Chloe finally confirmed what everyone already knew by telling host Andy Cohen that she was, in fact, dating Brooklyn. Moretz revealed, “We're in a relationship. It's fine. It's no biggie. The more I don't make it mysterious, the more people don't care.” The following week, Moretz appeared on an episode of The Talk and spoke more candidly about her romance, saying, “We've been off and on together for a couple of years now, and we just kind of made it official. We were always running from paparazzi and running from people taking pictures of us. And we were like, 'You know what? It's affecting our relationship.” Perhaps coming clean about their relationship status wasn't exactly the best idea for Chloe and Brooklyn, because they announced their split only four months later. We have to wonder if anyone even realizes they aren't dating anymore. It seems like only yesterday that they finally admitted that they were an item.
6 Christie Brinkley And John Mellencamp
Stunning supermodel Christie Brinkley has had her fair share of failed romances, but her search for true love seemed like it finally came to an end once she coupled up with singer/songwriter John Mellencamp. Brinkley has been married and divorced a staggering four times, including a super prominent romance with Billy Joel. Despite all of her unsuccessful unions, Christie isn't one to give up on love that easily. She first met Mellencamp at a party in 2015 and sparks didn't exactly fly at first sight. Brinkley thought they were way too different to ever be a couple, but the unlikely pair ultimately bonded over their similar love for their children, as well as being close in age.
After only one year of dating, they decided to call it quits in August of 2016. A rep for the duo told reporters that the couple's split was amicable and that "they vowed to remain best of friends." Shortly after their romance ended, Christie told the media that she wouldn't rule out the possibility of re-kindling their romance. Perhaps the rise and fall of Brinkley's relationship with John Mellencamp wasn't super notable in the media because she has dated a number of famous men over the years and has been through a couple of incredibly messy divorces. Compared to her past relationships, this one was kind of a snooze and few of us knew much about it.
5 Danielle Fishel And Tim Belusko
For seven years, Danielle Fishel stole our hearts playing the role of quirky Topanga Lawrence on Boy Meets World. After the show ended, Fishel had some small acting roles here and there, but for the most part, she stayed out of the spotlight and lived a relatively normal life. Danielle attended California State University where she met fellow student and future husband, Tim Belusko. After three years of dating, the couple got engaged in 2012 and tied the knot the following year. Fishel's personal life and professional career were about to be at an all-time high as fans were positively giddy when it was announced that Fishel would reprise her role for the highly-anticipated reboot, Girl Meets World in 2014. The gig catapulted Danielle back into the spotlight, and her marriage presumably took a back seat to her newly rejuvenated acting career. The starlet would often post pictures of her and her husband on social media, but then her Instagram went silent for a couple of months.
It was later revealed that Fishel quietly filed for divorce from her husband in October of 2015… and no one heard a thing about it until May of the following year! Fishel was a single woman for a stunning seven months before media outlets caught wind of her marital woes, but we think it won't be too hard for her to find love again. We hear that Ben Savage is still single… and Boys Meets World die-hards across the globe are all crossing their fingers that Corey and Topanga could actually get together in real life!
4 Steve-O And Kat Von D
When it comes to perfectly matched celebrity couples, we can't think of a more appropriate duo than that of Steve-O and Kat Von D. Both reality stars have been super controversial on their own with Steve-O doing ridiculous stunts for MTV and Kat becoming most notorious for breaking up Sandra Bullock's marriage to Jesse James only a few short years ago. If there were ever two people who deserved to be together, it would have been these two.
Steve and Kat were rumored to have been an item back in November of last year, and by March of 2016, they had already gone their separate ways. Although their whirlwind romance was brief, the stars were fans of PDA and often professed their undying love on Twitter for millions of followers to see. Like most relationships that start out on the fast-track, Steve and Kat's relationship fizzled out before it really even began. Most people don't know that this celeb couple had split up for one simple reason. It all happened so quickly that only a small number of fans knew that they were dating in the first place!
3 Emma Roberts And Evan Peters
Are they together… or aren't they? That's the burning question that most fans of Emma Roberts and Evan Peters have on their minds, considering that the longtime lovers have broken up and gotten back together more times than we can count. The actors met back in 2012 while filming a movie together and they have been caught up in a rollercoaster romance ever since. In 2013, Emma was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence when someone overheard the couple in a heated argument. Despite the disturbing circumstances, the couple chose to stay together.
In a pretty shocking move, Emma and Evan got engaged that same year. The pair decided to end their relationship and their engagement in 2015, but they confused us ever further when they were spotted holding hands just three short months later. Not surprisingly, these two split up for a second time in May of 2016, and Emma was already in a relationship with someone else by June. Once September rolled around, Emma and Evan's magnetic attraction prevailed yet again and they rekindled their explosive romance. We can hardly keep up with Emma and Evan, but if history is any indication, this wild card couple will likely split up in the near future and nobody will even notice.
2 Hilary Duff And Mike Comrie
Hilary Duff began dating professional hockey player Mike Comrie in 2007 and by 2010, the couple had announced their engagement. They got married that same year and they welcomed a son, Luca, in 2012. Life seemed to be wonderful for the former Disney channel star… until the once happy couple announced they were separating in 2014. Nobody knows for sure what led to the end of Duff and Comrie's marriage, but few of us even realized they had broken up for a number of reasons. For starters, the duo was often photographed together looking positively giddy on various outings with their son. Aside from successfully co-parenting, Duff and Comrie were even spotted out alone together on numerous occasions, making everyone wonder whether or not they even decided to end their romantic relationship after all. The former lovers were certainly in no rush to legally divorce.
In fact, the twosome waited a full year after they announced their breakup to forge ahead with court paperwork. Their divorce was eventually finalized in 2016, and a spokesperson for Hilary insisted that “they remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives”. Well, that's definitely an understatement! Mike and Hilary are still so attached at the hip that Comrie even made an appearance on this year's Duff family Christmas card, despite Hilary being in a brief romance with her personal trainer at the time of the photo-shoot. There's no denying that these two deserve an award for having the most amicable breakup ever. They are so close, it's like they never split up in the first place!
1 Danny DeVito And Rhea Perlman
In one of the most upsetting and unexpected recent celeb breakups, actors Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman decided to end their decades-long marriage and not many of us even knew about it! The longtime lovebirds first met in 1971 and wasted no time moving forward with their whirlwind romance. Just two weeks after meeting, the famous pair moved in together. Danny and Rhea tied the knot in 1982 and welcomed three children into the world over the next several years. These two iconic stars have been together for so long that it's hard to imagine them any way other than married, but they hit a rough patch in 2012. DeVito and Perlman announced their separation that year, but it just wasn't easy to throw away thirty years of marriage at the drop of a hat. The couple surprisingly reconciled in 2013, with DeVito telling media outlets, “Rhea and I are really close. Actually, still together, just separate, but together.”
While the logistics of their reunion weren't quite clear, hopeful fans assumed that the celebrity pair would work things out. It seemed like we all sort of forgot about Danny and Rhea's wayward romance, and the couple quietly separated once and for all in late 2016. Rumors of DeVito's alleged cheating had been swirling for years, and it looks like Rhea had finally had enough of his womanizing ways. DeVito and Perlman have been in the entertainment industry for a number of years and each has a pretty impressive net-worth. The former husband and wife are supposedly in a divorce battle that rings to the tune of $140 million, but most people hardly know that they even split up at all.
