15 Celebrity Wedding Day Disasters!
Is there anything we love more than a celebrity wedding? Whenever two huge stars tie the knot, we are always guaranteed an over the top, extravagant spectacle to enjoy. To many of us, $500,000 is an unbelievable amount to spend on one day, but for some celebs that just covers the cost of the evening entertainment. You would think with this amount of money spent that every last minute detail will be perfect - however this isn't always the case.
These celebs all had huge and shocking disasters on their big day - moments that would turn anyone into a full-blown bridezilla. These following weddings were all different in their choice of ceremony, guest list, nuptials, and location - although they did have one thing in common… there were huge blunders. You know what they say - plan for the worst and hope for the best.
15 Blake Lively Accidentally Burnt Her Own Wedding Dress
Here comes the bride… all dressed in white… and covered in burn marks. It's not quite the image every girl dreams of for her big day, but when Blake Lively married Ryan Reynolds that's exactly what she got. During the ceremony, Florence Welch was performing when Lively noticed something funny. She told Vogue magazine, "They brought out these sparklers, and I'm watching her sing. I look down and my wedding dress has a big burn from one of the sparklers. Right on the front! And it was just so heartbreaking to me."
Lively was distraught her wedding dress had been ruined but Reynolds was on hand to make her smile again. She added, "Later, my dress was hanging up and Ryan said, 'Isn't that beautiful?' I said, 'What?' And he pointed to the burn. My heart just stopped, because it was such a sensitive little subject. And he said, 'You'll always remember that moment with Florence singing and the sparklers. You have that forever, right there, preserved.' Now that's my favorite part of the dress."
14 Hilary Duff Loses Tooth On Her Big Day
Like something out of an actual nightmare, Hilary Duff's actual tooth fell out on her wedding day. The Lizzie McGuire actress told Ellen DeGeneres, "I was sitting on the bed with my mom and my sister, and they're like, 'You did not.' Then I started laughing at myself, and then I really burst into tears." The incident happened just three hours before she was due to get ready for walking down the aisle.
Luckily, her wedding planner's sister's husband's best friend was a dentist in California and the gap-tooth got fixed. Duff managed to make it down the aisle and marry her hockey player beau Mike Comrie. She added, "The actual wedding was perfect. Thank God I didn't swallow (my tooth). Not good for a bride on her wedding day."
13 Jessica Simpson Said The Wrong Name During Her Nuptials
In a moment that was reminiscent of the famous Friends scene where Ross says the wrong name on his wedding day, Jessica Simpson also made this huge mistake at the altar when she married her husband, former NFL star Eric Johnson, in 2014. We all know the singer and reality TV star is a bit ditzy - but this blunder really will stay with her longer than the "chicken of the sea" fiasco.
According to E! News, Jessica wore a custom Carolina Herrera and Jessica Alba was a witness to her blurting out her own name instead of her husbands. When the time came for the vows, she actually said, "I take thee Jessica." (Yes, really). The couple had waited longer than 80 months to finally tie the knot so it's not as if she had no time to practice.
12 Katherine Heigl Suffers Broken Bones and Postponed Honeymoon
27 Dresses actress Katherine Heigl married singer-songwriter Josh Kelley in 2007 - although it wasn't a stress-free affair. Two days before the big day Kelley did what most people would avoid and booked a skiing trip. Heigl told SheKnows, "He hadn't skied in years. I said, 'I don't think you should ski,' and he said, 'No, I'm a good skier-I'll be fine.' That day, of course, he broke his nose going over a jump because he was showing off! I was like, 'I told you so!'"
Following the broken nose, there were also broken hearts when the couple had to postpone their honeymoon to Mexico after Heigl forgot to travel with her own passport. These string of mishaps did not get them down and they are still strong nearly ten years and three children later.
11 Kristen Cavallari Was Bit By A Dog Before The Big Day
The Hills reality star turned lifestyle coach Kristen Cavallari married Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Culter in 2013. This was their second attempt to walk down the aisle as they called the first wedding off and worked things out in couple's therapy. She revealed on the Wake Up With Taylor radio show, "One hundred percent, I think (therapy) saved our relationship. I realized why I react certain ways to certain things, and you learn great tools for communication, which is the most important thing I think."
When they resolved their personal issues and decided to make it all the way down the aisle, but another disaster struck after Cavallari was bitten by her own dog which left her with an open wound. In her book, Balancing in Heels: My Journey to Health, Happiness, and Making It All Work, she wrote, "(The morning of the wedding) Brando (the dog) bit me right on the eye." Her makeup artist then had to glue the wound shut so the bride could look presentable on her big day.
10 Cameron Diaz's Wedding Ring Was Dropped By The Best Man
There is very little known about the 2015 wedding of Cameron Diaz and Good Charlotte frontman Benji Madden - but we do know Madden's best man messed up one of the big moments. A witness at the ceremony told In Touch magazine that the best man (presumably his brother and husband of Nicole Richie, Joel Madden) was supposed to bring him the wedding bands - but dropped them in front of everyone.
Then things only got worse. Cameron was supposed to change dresses before cutting the cake but she was physically unable to remove her first dress and had to call upon a stylist to help her escape. Even the couple's first dance failed to run smoothly as the lighting team messed up so bad the couple started screaming at them to "just push the off button." All this was witnessed by Drew Barrymore, Reese Witherspoon and Gwyneth Paltrow - who probably soothed Diaz with a strong cocktail.
9 Bethenny Frankel Went To The Toilet In A Bucket
It was one of those priceless moments that could only belong on reality television, Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel was 6-months pregnant on her wedding day in 2010 when nature called just before she was about to walk down the aisle. During an episode of Bethenny Getting Married? she realized it would be impossible for her to go to the bathroom without walking past all her wedding guests and ruining the big reveal. So her wedding planner had to quickly fetch a bucket and she relieved herself into that instead - no kidding.
To make matters even more excruciating, the reality star got stage fright and had to place her finger in a glass of water to try and help her go. Her marriage to Jason Hoppy lasted six years before ending in divorce. Well, at least all the beautiful (and embarrassing) moments from the big day will be in our memories forever.
8 Troian Bellisario Got Stuck In The Mud
It was the match made in TV show heaven - Suits star Patrick Adams tied the knot with Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario last year during a Californian ceremony. They decided to go with a camping theme but were unaware of the complications involved - as Bellisario made her way to the ceremony, her wedding car got stuck in the mud. The groom and other guests had to push the car for it to start moving again so they could marry on time.
Producer Donald Belisario, famous for Magnum P.I and NCIS, gave his daughter away to her hero husband in front of a guest list that included Suits star Sarah Rafferty, Star Trek's Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto and Scandal's Katie Lowes. Of course, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Sasha Pieterse, Keegan Allen, Ian Harding and Tyler Blackburn from Pretty Little Liars were in attendance too.
7 Casey Wilson Seriously Injures Both Her Legs On The Dancefloor
Happy Endings star Casey Wilson had a happy ending of her own when she tied the knot with her long-term boyfriend (and creator of the show) David Caspe - well almost if it wasn't for injury. During the ceremony, Wilson took to the dance floor during her Californian and bust too much of a move damaging both her knees. She told Martha Stewart Weddings, "The next day, I could not extend either of my legs. We were going to Italy, and my new husband was wheeling me through the airport. We were just laughing."
Her husband is likely familiar with her demanding behavior as the actress confessed she has dealt with anger issues in the past. In a piece for Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner's Lenny Letter, she wrote, "I started realizing my outbursts were causing real problems. I was not asked back to Saturday Night Live. My long-term relationship ended poorly." She added that she now understand the moment "between feeling and action” a lot better and she "found joy in (her) work,” but added, “I'm still an angry bird, to be sure.”
6 Hurricane Ana Hit Matthew Morrison's Big Day
Is there anything worse than planning your big day in Hawaii only to discover you will be hit by a tropical storm. Hurricane Ana was so rare that Glee star Matthew Morrison just picked an unlucky day to marry Divergent actress Renee Puente in Hawaii. Record measurements of tropical rains came down as they went ahead with the ceremony in 2014 but
Record measurements of tropical rains came down as they went ahead with the ceremony in 2014 but miraculously stopped when they walked down the aisle. Morrison told Martha Stewart Weddings, "It was phenomenal, the total downpour stopped the moment my mom and I walked down the aisle." The couple read their vows - then started again as they walked back up the aisle to Pharrell Williams's Happy. Mother Nature must be a huge Glee fan.
5 Earthquake Hits Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. Wedding
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. met after co-starring in Scooby-Doo and the two "90s sweethearts" tied the not in 2002. Their wedding in Mexico was planned to be an outdoor affair but Hurricane Hernan put an end to that and the ceremony had to be moved indoors. Everything looked calm - until they were hit by an earthquake in the area.
The couple's talent manager Ron DiBlaso told People, "Earthquake? Hurricane? Hey, I think it's a great way to start. All of those bigger-than-life natural events can only bode well for the marriage."
This year the couple celebrate 15 years together and Sarah Michelle Gellar shared on Instagram, "I love you not only for what you are but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself but for what you are making of me."
4 Princess Diana and Prince Charles' Endless Disasters
When 2.5 billion people around the world have tuned in to watch your wedding - the pressure really is on for the day to be perfect. Although nothing really went to plan for Prince Charles and Princess Diana when they tied the knot in 1981.
Diana's 25-foot long train could not be kept smoothed out in transit, so when she arrived at St Paul's Cathedral it was wrinkled. Then her heavy tiara - the Spencer Tiara which belongs to her family - was so heavy that it gave her a painful headache and as they walked into the church a 5-year-old bridesmaid kept falling down.
If the Princess thought things couldn't get much worse - they did. She misspoke her vows, instead of saying "Charles Philip Arthur George" she said "Philip Charles Arthur George" instead. The royal couple divorced 15 years later.
3 Sean Penn Violently Threatens The Paparazzi
In 1985, Sean Penn married Madonna on her 27th birthday. The ceremony was held on top of a clifftop mansion in Malibu, California, where a giant sign reading "F**k off" was placed on the ground to make it very clear they didn't want paparazzi flying their helicopters around.
The guest list read like a whos-who of Hollywood: Rosanna Arquette, Tom Cruise, Andy Warhol, Cher, Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Carrie Fisher, Diane Keaton, David Letterman, and Christopher Walken all attended.
Security was sadly not tight enough and the paparazzi still managed to get close to the wedding of the year. Penn retaliated with threatening violence whilst holding a rock as reporter Ian Markham-Smith told Time, "He went for us like a madman. He went berserk, like a whirlwind. He said, 'No pictures - you take my picture and I'll break your back with this rock." The marriage ended four years later with Madonna's brother calling the romance "a recipe for disaster."
2 Weather Delays John Legend and Chrissy Teigen's Wedding
There is nothing worse than things failing to go to plan on the big day. For Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, that was exactly the nightmare the pair both had on their hands. The pair had plans to fly their wedding guests from Ohio to Lake Como, Italy, but due to poor weather, saying "I Do" was set back for four hours. Teigen told Martha Stewart Weddings that her guests who had already arrived "had cocktails for four hours" to pass the time - so things weren't all that bad.
Finally, the wait was over and the two managed to make it down the aisle. After they were announced man and wife, Legend took to his piano to serenade the bride with a rendition of All of Me - a song he wrote for originally for her.
1 Drunken Fights Breakout At Kim Kardashian's Wedding
You don't need to be a genius to realize that when you mix far too much alcohol and wedding guests together (especially family) this might lead to disaster. Kim Kardashian's Italian wedding to Kanye West was plagued with problems from the start; best man Jay-Z was a no-show (allegedly this was Beyonce's doing), marble statues that were transported for the big day were damaged in transit, and the reception table that had the names of guests engraved had many misspellings.
On Kim's blog, she posted a video chat between her and Chrissy Teigen discussing the big day. Teigen revealed she was so drunk and emotional she argued with John Legend and feared she had ruined the big day - but the good news was everyone else was too drunk to notice. Kim revealed, "I feel like there were so many fights at our wedding! Everyone was so wasted." Well, at least it was a memorable occasion (if anyone can actually remember it!).
