15 Celebs Not Afraid To Throw Shade At Taylor Swift's Squad
It's been two years since Taylor Swift became captain of her very own squad of good-looking, talented and very fashionable young, female stars. Fully-fledged members of the squad are Selena Gomez, Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid, Jaime King, Cara Delevingne, Lorde, Hailee Steinfeld, Blake Lively, Ellie Goulding, Martha Hunt and Lily Aldridge. But what is the squad all about?
Squad member Gigig Hadid told Elle Canada, "We talk about (female empowerment) a lot; it's a conversation we often have." She added, "We want to be the generation and the group of friends known for supporting each other. 'Squad Goals' is a big social media thing right now, and that's what we want to inspire in other groups of friends - to be proud of the power you all have when you're together, which can be amplified so much by each person. That's what has been cool about everyone's willingness to be there for each other."
They are always on the lookout for new recruits to join their mission to take over the world, one revenge track at a time, but not everyone is impressed. These following stars have thrown major shade at Taylor's squad and actually some of them have quite valid reasons for doing so.
15 Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato did not hold back when it came to slamming Taylor's squad. The Cool For The Summer singer who has struggled with bi-polar in the past said the girls were not a "realistic" shape. She told Glamour magazine, "To be honest, and this will probably get me in trouble, I don't see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body. It's kind of this false image of what people should look like. And what they should be like, and it's not real. It's not realistic."
If she wasn't being clue enough that it was certainly Taylor's squad she was talking about then she cleared up any doubt when she added, "And I think that having a song and a video about tearing Katy Perry down, that's not women's empowerment. We all do things that aren't, but I have to ask myself, Am I content with calling myself a feminist? Yes, because I speak out."
14 Rowan Blanchard
One star that is not a fan of Taylor's squad exclusivity is Disney's Girl Meets World star Rowan Blanchard. Although she is only 15-years-old, she weighed in on female empowerment issues and claimed close-knit girl gangs "makes feminism look very one dimensional." The teen has been previously outspoken on issues surrounding feminism, human rights, and gun violence proving she really is wise beyond her years.
She also told Just Jared Jr., "Of course female friendship is a beautiful thing. It's insanely powerful. Sisterhood is something so valid and important when you are growing up that I literally think the essence of it should be taught in schools. But, the 'squads' we see in the media are very polarizing. Feminism and friendship are supposed to be inclusive, and most of these 'squads' are strictly exclusive."
13 Chloe Moretz
Chloe Moretz was invited to join Taylor's squad but she turned it down. During an interview with Complex magazine she said, "(Taylor's) a very talented person" but she has no desire to join a girl gang. The Kick-Ass star revealed, "(Squads) appropriate exclusivity. They're cliques!" Before adding, "It's not just about women being powerful. It's about races being powerful; genders being powerful."
She said on the issue of feminism, "There were definitely moments when I was 13 or 14 and was worried about not being liked if I spoke out. I realized that's this forced, societal feminist outlook of how women should be-they should feel sorry for speaking out." Chloe pulled out as the lead of the Disney remake for The Little Mermaid following a backlash that the character Aerial was not a good role for women.
12 Meghan Trainor
Another star who had Chloe's back was her BFF, All About That Bass singer Meghan Trainor. The pair were interviewed together for Billboard magazine when Chloe revealed, "We don't agree with what the word 'squad' means. (Meghan) and I, when we were growing up, we both dealt with being left out of a lot of situations and not being invited into people's friend groups. We just think that squad-specific exclusivity doesn't go along with what we believe in."
Meghan also agreed that some celebrity friendships appear a bit too fake. She explained, "Other celebrity friends, they're not your best friends because you don't get to see them, and when you do, you're like, 'Oh, hi. Are you exhausted, too?' Chloe's just really real." Nice to see that even though they have shaded the squad, these two still have each other.
11 Rihanna
During Taylor's 1984 World Tour she invited many members of her squad up on stage with her to either perform or just to be screamed at by her fans. Stars that joined the Out of the Woods singer included Idina Menzel, Miranda Lambert, Julia Roberts, Chris Rock, Ricky Martin, Keith Urban, Steven Tyler, Mick Jagger and many more.
However, one artist who refused to join her on stage was Rihanna. She told NME magazine, "I don't think I would (join Taylor on stage), I just don't think it makes sense. I don't think our brands are the same: I don't think they match, I don't think our audiences are the same." Rihanna, who has made a name for herself by being an edgy and risque act, then added, "She's a 'role model'. I'm not."
10 Hailey Baldwin
Hailey Baldwin, ex-girlfriend of Justin Bieber and BFF to Kendall Jenner, told Yahoo7Be, "I don't think that you need to create a public squad. I don't know what that proves." The daughter of Unusual Suspects actor Stephen Baldwin added, "I don't really understand the Taylor Swift squad at all." She didn't stop there and fired another shot by claiming, "I know what having a squad means. I just have my friends and that's it."
Hailey has been on and off with Justin Bieber for a couple of years, and with his ex, Selena Gomez, being a fully-fledged member of the squad, they had all turned against the model. Hailey wrote in an Instagram post earlier this year, "Misplacing the blame onto someone else isn't going to get you to the next stage in life, so try not to manipulate a situation to make yourself look better."
9 Zendaya
Zendaya was an official member of Taylor's squad and attended many events, including the VMAs, right by their side. But she became wise to their wicked ways and started to cut down on the time she spent with them. Nobody was really sure if she had permanently revoked her membership to the squad or if she was just on a hiatus.
Then when Taylor was outed by Kim Kardashian for agreeing to lyrics Kanye West had written (something she had previously denied) hawk-eyed fans noticed that Zendaya had "liked" tweets about Taylor's own downfall.
She liked one tweet from a fan that read: "I'm glad Zendaya was never really down with that whole Taylor squad s**t." Another tweet she liked was a photo of her posing alongside the squad with a sour look on her face, the caption read: "Zendaya new better."
8 The Saturday Night Live Cast
To kick off their 41st season last year, Saturday Night Live drafted in a few comedy legends to help parody Taylor's squad with their own skit. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Amy Schumer started their own version of the Bad Blood video with Schumer posing as one of the squad members asking, "Is this video for charity?" Later Schumer asks, "Who are we mad at again?"
This wasn't the first time Fey and Poehler had poked fun at Taylor and funnily enough Taylor doesn't like being on the receiving end of hate herself. When the two comedy goddesses joked about Taylor's love life during the 2013 Golden Globes, the singer replied with a cold and threatening, "There's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women."
7 Troian Bellisario
Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario did not hold back when questioned during a Q&A session with Cosmopolitan what she thought of Taylor's squad. She said, "I'm so appalled by what I consider to be her false feminism. It seems like she's this person who's like, 'Sisterhood!' and then she does nothing but tear down the women that were once her friends."
Troian was referencing Taylor's ever-changing squad, who have a high turnover of members depending on how they play by the rules. Actress and squad member, model and star of Empire Serayah McNeill, told Pret-a-Reporter that when Taylor makes plans they all have to jump at it. She revealed, "She'll text us and be like, 'Let's do this.' Group message - it's not a manager thing, it's just a text."
6 Katy Perry
To cut a long story short: Taylor's very public feud with Katy Perry was publicized everywhere following the release of the Bad Blood video. The revenge track was apparently a bid to get back at Katy since she tried to steal some dancers from Taylor's world tour.
Although she didn't name her personally, Taylor told Rolling Stone magazine, "She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me." Katy's stolen dancers had her back claiming they preferred to tour with Katy as with Taylor they "weren't really dancing anyway."
Following the release of Bad Blood, Katy hit back at Taylor's squad branding them all 'mean girls' when she tweeted: "Watch out for the Regina George in sheep's clothing… " She also fired more shade with another tweet that read: "Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman… " Shade… served.
5 Camilla Belle
Following Katy Perry's tweet about "pitting women against other women", actress Camilla Belle tweeted back, "Couldn't have said it better myself." Proving she was clearly on Katy's side as she was also done with being bullied by the squad.
Just like Katy, the 10,000 BC actress also had a hate track penned about her by Taylor. When Camilla started dating Joe Jonas, shortly after he split from Taylor, things became brutal. Taylor wrote her song Better Than Revenge and the lyrics read: "He's not a saint and she's not what you think. She's an actress, she's better known for the things that she does on the mattress."
During Taylor's downfall, Camilla tweeted: "No need for revenge. Just sit back & wait." She added, "Those who hurt you will eventually screw up themselves & if you're lucky, God will let you watch."
4 Yung Skeeter
Another celebrity who said he was not a fan of Taylor's Bad Blood video was Yung Skeeter, whose real name is Trever McFedries, when he tweeted: "Using a group of women to take shots at another women" followed by another tweet saying: "Let's be good to each other." Yung Skeeter and Taylor were also once friends but it appears he believes the squad took things a step to far in the music video.
Yung Skeeter toured with Katy Perry five years ago during her California Dreams tour and the pair have remained close friends ever since. Another Twitter user also pointed that although the video was a clear dig at Katy, she was once close to some of the girls in the video including Selena Gomez and Ellie Goulding, as they tweeted: "Some of them are Katy's friends, I don't know what to think."
3 Kendall Jenner
Despite having a mutual close friend in Cara Delevingne, Kendall Jenner and Taylor have never been close, which once again comes down to a battle over boys. Taylor dated One Direction's Harry Styles for a matter of months before they split because of her neediness. Kendall then spent New Year's Eve with Harry and she was thrown out the squad.
Hollywood Life reported, "Taylor heard from a mutual friend that Harry and Kendall are back together and she is completely shocked. She can't believe that Kendall would actually date Harry, especially after their last conversation when she said she would never, ever get involved with him again."
Kendall got her own back at the squad, taking a jab at how they all side together and lack their own opinions. She told Allure magazine about her own squad that she formed, "We all call ourselves the Super Natural Friend Group because we all have such cool individual lives."
2 Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus began her feud with the squad when she mocked a selfie taken by Gigi and Bella Hadid on Instagram. The sisters posed in bath robes with towels wrapped around the hair, then moments later Miley posted her own robed selfie, but with her eyes crossed and the caption: "Juz tryin 2 b as kiewt as a Hadid sister."
Miley Cyrus is the wild child of the pop world so clearly no squad in the world is going to tame her. Not that she wants to be in a squad anyway as she told The New York Post, "I'm not trying to be in the squad." She also threw shade at Taylor's squad by adding none of them were 'real'. The Wrecking Ball singer said, "None of my friends are famous and not because of any other reason than I just like real people who are living real lives, because I'm inspired by them."
She also discussed the Bad Blood video telling Marie Claire, "I don't get the violence revenge thing. That's supposed to be a good example? And I'm a bad role model because I'm running around with my t*****s out?"
1 Nicki Minaj
When it comes to awards season, things can get a little heated between rivals, but Nicki Minaj took things to a whole new level when the nominations for last year's VMAs was announced.
Taylor's Bad Blood video; which features Gigi Hadid, Ellie Goulding, Lena Dunham, Martha Hunt, Hailee Steinfeld, Cara Delevingne, Zendaya, Hayley Williams, Lily Aldridge, Karlie Kloss and many others, received a nomination but Nicki's video for Anaconda did not - even though it was one of the most talked about music videos of the year. Nicki also co-starred in a video with Beyonce for Feeling Myself but this was snubbed too.
Nicki tweeted: "If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for 'vid' of the year." With the other nominations going to Kendrick Lamar, Mark Ronson and Ed Sheeran - it was quite clear that Nicki was shading Taylor's squad with the tweet.
