15 Celebs Who Attended A Women's March This Past Weekend

Protests have always been a thing. You probably learned about them in history class. But what was remarkable this year, not even a month into 2017, was the Women's March that took place on Saturday January 21st. The Women's March came straight after President (ugh) Donald Trump's inauguration. A lot of people feel that comments he has said are extremely misogynistic aka completely against women. This march was not exclusive to women, however, as men marched alongside their female counterparts. Many women marched for feminist issues such as equal pay or reproductive rights. These marches happened all over the WORLD, not just Washington, and brought out huge numbers in cities such as Chicago and L.A. Scientists are saying there were three times as many protesters as there were people that attended Trump's inauguration, and this is easy to figure out considering how many celebrities showed up to make their voices heard and participate in the march! Take a look at only some of the protestors who happen to also be famous faces!

15 Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus has never been afraid to speak up for her beliefs. She has a non-profit called Happy Hippie which supports mainly LGBT rights but also education, women's rights, social justice, homeless youth, mental health, the environment, and animal welfare. She is definitely a force to be reckoned with. The following statement is on the website: “People who say WE can't change the world ARE wrong. We will make some noise and cause a scene!” She definitely did cause a scene when she marched in L.A. “We don't want to talk about change, we want to be the change,” she told a reporter. “And to know that I'm not alone in this dream brings me such hope, and hope is a crucial component in creating the world that we want to live in.” She was so passionate about the subject that she even gave a speech to fellow protestors: “When they first thought it was gonna happen today, they got a permit for 1,000 people. There are almost 400,000 people - half a million people here today. The way I feel, standing here right now, is proud and honored to have shared this moment with all of you guys.”

14 Melissa Benoist

Melissa Benoist, who was on Glee and is now starring on The CW show Supergirl, also showed up with a sign to protest against a quote that Donald Trump said. (You know the one!) Melissa only recently achieved fame with Supergirl, but she also guest starred on Homeland, The Good Wife, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. She also appeared in the movies Danny Collins, The Longest Ride, and Whiplash. Melissa uploaded a picture to Instagram of her holding a sign that said “"HEY DONALD, DON'T TRY TO GRAB MY P***Y--IT'S MADE OF STEEL.” Makes sense considering she is a superhero! Her caption on Instagram was the hashtag “#womensmarchonwashington” meaning she traveled all the way from her home in L.A. to participate in the main march in Washington! Melissa has had a lot of girl-power roles, starting with Glee, where she overcame an eating disorder and stood up to her cheating boyfriend, all the way to Supergirl, where she kicks butt and takes names!

13 Madonna

Madonna has always been controversial, so it is no surprise she made quite a statement with her recent speech as well. She held nothing back, even dropping a couple of F-bombs in the process. She defended her speech by saying, “My speech began with 'I want to start a revolution of love.' I then go on to take this opportunity to encourage women and all marginalized people to not fall into despair but rather to come together and use it as a starting point for unity and to create positive change in the world. I spoke in metaphor and I shared two ways of looking at things - one was to be hopeful, and one was to feel anger and outrage, which I have personally felt. However, I know that acting out of anger doesn't solve anything. 12 America Ferrera

The beautiful actress also joined the march in Washington to speak her mind. “It's been a heartrending time to be both a woman and an immigrant in this country,” she said in a speech to the public. “Our dignity, our character, our rights have all been under attack, and a platform of hate and division assumed power yesterday. But the president is not America. His Cabinet is not America. Congress is not America. We are America. And we are here to stay.” Go girl! America has starred in a lot of works but broke out in the movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and the television show Ugly Betty. This was not the end of her rant, however! “She went on to say, We march today for our families and our neighbors, for our future, for the causes we claim and for the causes that claim us. We march today for the moral core of this nation, against which our new president is waging a war. He would like us to forget the words, 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free,' and instead, take up a credo of hatred.”

11 Lin-Manuel Miranda

Lin-Manuel Miranda found fame when he wrote the music and lyrics for the best-selling musical In The Heights but really blew up after creating the musical Hamilton (maybe you've heard of it). Just kidding. The musical has become so popular that it's impossible to get tickets and there is even a waiting list. If you have seen either of these musicals, you could probably guess that Miranda has a more progressive point of view, making it no surprise that he participated in the Women's March. He even brought his son with him to give him an enlightening experience. He wanted to show his son how important it was to be an ally for women even though they themselves are not women. Of course, his son might not be able to fully grasp this yet as he is only two years old! They attended the march in London (told you it was all over the world!) and Miranda tweeted “Proud to support women's rights with the whole fam in [London] #womensmarchlondon”

10 Amber Tamblyn

Actress Amber Tamblyn had no shortage of pictures from her experience joining the Women's March. Marie Claire magazine asked her to document the march on Instagram. Even cooler? Amber is super, super pregnant! That was not going to stop her from fighting for her beliefs, of course. She got to reunite with her Sisters of the Traveling Pants co-stars Blake Lively and America Ferrera for the cause. “Sisters for life. For real. Forever. #womensmarch” she captioned a picture of her and America. With a pink hat and pink nail-polish, Amber marched through the streets with her sisters. Amber has been vocal about how much she does not like Donald Trump and even was brave enough to share an assault story to help make her point. “That part of my body, which the current Presidential Nominee of the United States Donald Trump recently described as something he'd like to grab a woman by, was bruised from my ex-boyfriend's violence for at least the next week," Tamblyn wrote in an open letter.

9 Ian McKellen

Legendary actor Sir Ian McKellen has always been an activist. As an openly gay man in Hollywood, he is not afraid to speak his mind and fight for what he believes is right. Everyone who has ever encountered Ian has a positive story to tell about him, and his appearance at the Women's March was no different. He took pictures with fans as he held up one of the best signs ever: He held up a picture of a meme of Sir Patrick Stewart giving the face-palm as if he is so disappointed and just done with whatever is going on! This is extra special because Ian and Patrick are BFF's. Later, Sir Ian McKellen went on to explain on his Facebook page that the brilliant sign was not actually his idea. “The placard of Sir Patrick, by the way, was not my own - I found it at the end of the March in Trafalgar Square,” he explained. It still worked out brilliantly though considering the history of their friendship!

8 Zendaya

Zendaya is young, but there is no doubting that she is a total boss. She started out as a kid on the Disney Channel show Shake It Up! but very quickly turned into a beautiful young woman with lots of new projects ahead of her, including playing Mary-Jane in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Zendaya seemed super excited to be there and uploaded a short clip to her Twitter with the caption “Couldn't be more proud… I am here, we are here!!! #WomensMarch” She encouraged others to join by adding a caption to an Instagram photo that read “Get up… stand up.” Another caption included “Proudly a part of herstory.” She also had a very cute moment with her Shake It Up! co-star, Bella Throne, when they got to reunite at the march. Zendaya has also known to be vocal about her political beliefs in the past, so this comes as no surprise to her fans.

7 Lena Dunham

This is no shocker, of course. Proud feminist Lena Dunham played a prominent role in the Women's March. Not only did she create and star in her show Girls but Lena also shared her experience with assault in her book "Not That Kind of Girl," so this cause is particularly important to her. She was one of the protesters who donned a pink hat and tweeted her reasoning in participating in the march: “So that our daughters will know their bodies are their own. So our sons embody gentle strength. So they can dismiss both labels,” she wrote. “We march to show our struggles are not isolated but bound together by a rainbow thread. I don't rise if you don't rise.” Of course, Lena had to be quirky too-a group of friends (including her mom!) traveled in a big pink bus to the march. She looks back fondly on the experience, tweeting “All those powerful women. All those people who love them. All demanding more. All across America. Prettiest sight these eyes ever did see.”

6 Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler was one of the many celebrities that Lena Dunham ran into at the march. They snapped a pic together with the caption “Parks and Menstruation” (a play off of Amy's show, Parks and Recreation, of course). Amy has made it her mission to inspire girls everywhere with her website “amysmartgirls.com” which share inspiring stories or advice. “Founded by artist Amy Poehler and producer Meredith Walker, Amy Poehler's Smart Girls organization is dedicated to helping young people cultivate their authentic selves,” the website states. Amy sometimes uploads vlogs addressing young girls and the website has articles written by multiple writers-including Chelsea Clinton! (Kind of funny, since Amy parodied her mom Hilary Clinton on Saturday Night Live for so many years!) Needless to say, Amy is very supportive of women and there are already stories up on the website about the march contributed by readers. Amy has used her career to stand up for women and girls, and she is not about to stop now.

5 Scarlett Johansson

The dazzling actress has a lot of opinions on the topic of women's rights, so much so that she actually gave a speech. She addressed the audience (but mainly Trump) with this: “President Trump, I did not vote for you. That said, I respect that you are our President-elect and I want to be able to support you,” she said. “First, I ask that you support me, support my sister, support my mother, support my best friend and all of our girlfriends, support the men and women here today that are anxiously awaiting to see how your next moves may drastically affect their lives.” She also used her speech to advocate for Planned Parenthood, which has been a controversial subject, especially during the latest presidential race. Scarlett revealed that she and her friends were given cancer screenings by Planned Parenthood when she was a teenager. “No judgment, no questions asked, Planned Parenthood provided a safe place where I could be treated with gentle guidance.”

4 Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys brought the house down (or, well, the streets) by not only speaking but also performing her hit “This Girl is On Fire,” which we think was super fitting for the cause! She also recited Maya Angelou's poem “Still I Rise,” with lines like “You may shoot me with your words/You may cut me with your eyes/ You may kill me with your hatefulness, /But still, like air, I'll rise.” Definitely look up the whole poem if you have not read it already-it's extremely empowering! Alicia later uploaded a picture to Instagram with the caption “No matter where you were today… We sent a powerful message! I'm proud of everyone all over the world who gathered with such dignity and strength to send the message that we won't stop until we are heard! #WomensMarch #WhyIMarch #WomensRightsAreHumanRights #WeAreHere” Alicia is a powerful woman with a powerful voice, and it is great to see her use it for a good cause.

3 Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae has always believed that girls can do whatever they want to do… even wearing suits! It is fitting that Janelle ended up being another notable speaker at the march. “Continue to embrace the things that make you unique, even if it makes others uncomfortable. You are enough. And whenever you feel in doubt, whenever you want to give up, you must always remember to choose freedom over fear.” On stage, she was surrounded by the “Mothers of the Movement” activists and used them to make a point: “I wanna remind you that it was woman that gave you Dr. Martin Luther King Jr,” she said. “It was woman that gave you Malcolm X. And according to the Bible, it was a woman that gave you Jesus.” She then performed her hit “Hell You Talmbout” which focuses on lives lost due to police brutality or under police custody. So she managed to get in another social justice issue in there too! The song consists of her repeating the names of the victims while encouraging the listener to say his/her name.

2 Ashley Judd

Ashley Judd shocked a lot of people by interrupting someone else to recite a poem on stage entitled “Nasty Woman,” which of course referenced something that Donald Trump once called his opponent Hillary Clinton. The poem was actually written by a 19-year-old from Tennessee named Nina Donavan, which we think is pretty cool. Some people definitely wonder if the poem crossed some lines, however-at one point in the poem, Trump is compared to Adolph Hitler. “I feel Hitler in these streets,” Ashley said, “A mustache traded for a toupee. Nazis renamed.” Woah! There were a lot more controversial lines, such as “I'm not as nasty as your daughter being your favorite [desired] symbol,” and “Our p-ies ain't for grabbing. Our p-ies are for our pleasure and they are for birthing new generations… of nasty women.” What a statement! She also addressed Scarlett Johansson in the crowd, shouting “Scarlett Johansson, why were the female actors paid less than half of what the male actors earned?” Good question!

1 Nick Offerman

We had to include this guy because it was just too cute and funny! Nick Offerman is a comedian best known for his role on Amy Poehler's show Parks and Recreation. He is a big, burly man, and darn right he is going to wear a pink hat and march along the women in solidarity! Although he is a tough-looking guy, he identifies as a feminist and was 100% behind the cause. We think that is so admirable! “I'm a nasty girl #WomensMarch” he tweeted. "I'm so moved by the way the planet stood up to knock that guy's d--k in the dirt,” he said in an interview. He continued, “It was just a bunch of people taking action based on how they feel. And I think if we see a lot more of that, we'll be less nervous.” Nick has made his thoughts clear on President Donald Trump clear in the past, tweeting vulgar (but hilarious) comments at him. It just goes to show, all types of people can come together and unite if they believe in something hard enough!
