15 Celebs Who Totally Transformed Since Their Teenage Years
While every single baby and young child is adorable, most individuals go through an awkward stage at a particular time in their life - their teenage years. Your teenage years are often a time when your body is rapidly changing, you're experimenting with different looks and hairstyles and learning all about make-up or grooming products, and the end result can often be a bit… well… cringe-worthy.
You may think that you're the only one who had to suffer through an awkward phase before you developed into the incredible adult that you are, but you're wrong - even celebrities who look flawless now and constantly slay in every picture went through a phase in their teenage years, and some of them looked a lot different then than they do now.
Part of it is just the general process of growing up and growing into your body parts and face. Part of it is figuring out what works for you, for your particular body type and face shape and overall personality. The celebrities on this list eventually figured it out and became the stone cold foxes they are now, but back in the day? They were just average, awkward teenagers.
Here are 15 celebs who have totally transformed since their teenage years.
15 Rashida Jones
Rashida Jones is pretty darn incredible. You probably know her best for showing off her comedic chops week after week on popular sitcoms including Parks and Recreation and The Office, where she played nurse Ann Perkins and Karen Filippelli, respectively. While she looks ultra glam on the red carpets now, Jones confesses that in her younger years, she was a nerd who absolutely loved reading and computers. Her talent eventually landed her on the Hollywood A-List, but before that, she also earned a degree from the prestigious Harvard University. She's penned a comic book series and a screenplay, she's produced a documentary, she's released awesome 90s-inspired music videos… I mean, there's pretty much nothing this woman can't do. She's far surpassed the average actress and is involved in tons of interesting projects, not just in front of the camera but writing and producing behind it. Perhaps her awkward teenage years were a bit of a blessing, because they allowed her to develop strong passions that served her very well later in life.
14 Ryan Seacrest
Ryan Seacrest is constantly rubbing elbows with every major celebrity in the business, thanks to his gigs as a radio personality and television host. He's perhaps best known as being the host for the reality television show American Idol for countless seasons, but he also lends his personality to the public on his morning show On Air with Ryan Seacrest. He's also been heavily involved with the E! network for many years, so you've likely seen him on the red carpet dishing with all the A-Listers at various Hollywood events. Despite not being an actor or musician or something along those lines, he's definitely made it onto the A-List, and is a household name at this point. From his perma-tan to his white teeth and perfectly coiffed hair, Seacrest is every bit as groomed as the celebrities he covers. However, back in his teenage years, he was just an awkward, slightly chubby kid from the south.
13 Joe Manganiello
Okay, Joe Manganiello's transformation from awkward teenager to super sexy Hollywood star is perhaps one of the most incredible. Awhile back, he dug an old picture out of the archives from when he was a skinny teenager with thick glasses and an unfortunate haircut who was just happy to be on his school basketball team. Looking at the picture of teenage Joe Manganiello, you'd likely assume he grew up to be slightly nerdy with a fairly average physique. Well, that couldn't be further from the truth. Sure, Manganiello definitely likes intellectual pursuits such as reading - he isn't just a gym rat. However, his bread and butter in the entertainment industry has come in playing characters like a sexy werewolf in True Blood or a super sexy stripper in the Magic Mike series. And he's here to help you transform too - if you've ever wanted to have that Manganiello physique, you could just pick up his book Evolution. I mean, it'll probably require a ton of hard work, but hey - nothing good comes easy.
12 Snoop Dogg
We know - we were as surprised as you are. Basically ever since he stepped into the spotlight as a rapper, Snoop Dogg has had a particular look. Rather than bulking up like many of the other rappers in the game do, he's always kept a slim physique, which he's paired with braids. Back in the day, when he was still Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr., before he was Snoop, he looked a whole lot different. Sure, if you look really close, there are some similarities in his distinct facial structure that hint at what's to come, but let's be serious - he looks like a totally different guy. Even when Snoop Dogg opts to put a suit on, he has a certain amount of swagger that this sweet young boy in a suit and tie just doesn't have. It's a little tough to picture this guy coming up with a song like the iconic "Gin and Juice."
11 George Clooney
While he's now happily married to certified girl boss Amal Clooney, for decades George Clooney was basically Hollywood's hottest bachelor. Sure, there was always a younger model entering the entertainment industry, but Clooney was a classic - he snagged gorgeous woman after gorgeous woman because he was strong, sexy, and had a lot of charm. Given the amount of confidence Clooney had, you'd think that he's always been attractive, that he'd never experienced an awkward phase in his life, right? Oh, you couldn't be more wrong. Back when he was a teenager, George Clooney looked like an entirely different guy, and definitely went through a crazy transformation before he became a Hollywood star. We're going to blame some of this on the errors of the times, but I mean come on - the glasses, the bowl cut, the awkward smile, there's just nothing about the teenager photographed in this picture that hints at a future silver fox whatsoever.
10 Drake
Anyone who was a fan of Degrassi: The Next Generation will remember a time when rap superstar Drake was just plain old Aubrey Graham from Toronto, who played the athlete Jimmy Brooks. However, eventually he wanted to pursue his music career, so he shrugged off the role of the wholesome athlete and took up a new moniker - Drake. Under his new name, he started releasing hit after hit, captivating audiences around the world, and before long he was inventing viral slang terms like YOLO and grinding on stage with Rihanna. Quite a journey for a quiet kid from Toronto! Regardless of how much more expensively he's groomed, the type of clothing he wears, how much jewellery he's rocking or who he's partying with, there's one thing that Drake can't transform - that goofy grin. It's the one thing that gives him away, because it's a pretty dramatic transformation from this awkward teenager in the denim jacket to the international sensation he is now.
9 Jennifer Garner
When Jennifer Garner snagged the leading role as Sydney Bristow on Alias, a character who basically kicked butt and took names, she pretty much immediately became a household name - all of a sudden, everyone wanted to know who the gorgeous actress was. Garner went on to conquer the film industry, being cast in everything from romantic comedies like 13 Going on 30 and Juno, to more serious flicks like the recent Dallas Buyers Club. Through it all, she's crafted a reputation as an actress who is a low key kind of gorgeous - she's generally not one to show off all the goods on the red carpet, and when she's not on screen she tends to go for a more subtle look with minimal make-up and casual clothing, but there's no doubt that she's absolutely stunning. However, she definitely had an awkward phase as well - from the huge glasses to the too-short bangs to the big, bulky, oh-so-80s sweater, no one would have imagined this teen would blossom into an A-List superstar.
8 Matthew Lewis
Matthew Lewis rose to fame as one of the cast members of the beloved Harry Potter film franchise. Actors and actresses involved with that particular series had the unusual experience of literally growing up in front of the cameras - most of the main characters in the film who were students and not professors started the first film when they were about 10 or 11 years old and were well into adulthood when the series wrapped. Most grew up well, with some like Emma Watson becoming absolutely gorgeous, but the true surprise to everyone was Matthew Lewis. Lewis played the bumbling Neville Longbottom who, while full of heart and impossibly sweet, was not exactly the school hunk. However, Lewis is having the last laugh now because he's become, well, a total babe. Given the way he looks now, as well as the years of honing his craft in a major film series, we wouldn't be surprised if Lewis exploded and became one of the next big things in Hollywood.
7 Minka Kelly
While many celebrities who only become famous once they've reached adulthood manage to hide evidence of their awkward teenage years well, there are always enough yearbooks kicking around the world that images from those are bound to surface, as Minka Kelly knows. Before she was playing beloved cheerleader Lyla Garrity on the cult hit television show Friday Night Lights, Kelly was just another student at Valley High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Nowadays, the star rarely shows up anywhere looking less than flawless, but back in her teenage years, she hadn't quite figured out what her look was - in the yearbook shot, she's shown to be experimenting strangely curled bangs and a lot of lip liner. There's no doubt that she was gorgeous, even in her more awkward years, but once she mastered make-up, she took things to a whole new level. Now, she's busy starring in films and trying to solidify her successful career.
6 Megan Fox
Megan Fox has certainly gone through phases since entering the entertainment industry. She started out playing mean girls and popular girls on film and television, then moved on to basically playing the role of "super sexy bad girl that every guy wants to date." The majority of her film roles focus on her sexuality, including her roles in the Transformers franchise and in cult hit Jennifer's Body. However, she wasn't always the bombshell that she is today - though she snagged her first role in her later teenage years, the younger version of teenage Megan Fox was much more towards the adorable side of the spectrum than the sex pot image that Fox has in Hollywood today. And lately, Fox has been proving that becoming a mom doesn't need to be synonymous with becoming frumpy, as she continues to show up looking super sexy on every red carpet despite now being a mom of three.
5 Adam Levine
Adam Levine, the front man of Maroon 5 and reality television show personality on The Voice, is one of the sexiest men in the music business right now. I mean, after years of wild bachelor living and dating supermodels, when he finally settled down it was of course with a supermodel, Behati Prinsloo, who you may know from the Victoria's Secret fashion show. However, before Levine was a big thing who showed up in his rocker chic look with his tattoos on display, totally melting hearts whenever he performed, he was just a nerdy Jewish kid. If you doubt that, just take a look at this throwback photo Levine shared on his Instagram page from way back in his teenage years in the 1990s. Sure, the longer hair and goatee were more in style back then than they are now, but come on - the entire package is just way, way nerdier than you'd expect from a pop/rock star.
4 Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart became a household name and legit A-List celebrity after she snagged the coveted role of Bella Swan in the smash hit film series Twilight. However, that was by no means her first acting role - she's actually been in the industry since she was a child. Back in her teenage years, she wasn't a big fan of make-up, and she didn't exactly hurry to grow up and bare it all in revealing dresses on the red carpet like some child stars do. She went through quite the transformation over the years before settling on her current aesthetic, which has a bit of a rocker chic, androgynous vibe. She definitely isn't your typical star of a huge blockbuster film franchise - she's not the type to giggle for the camera, she's not the type to run errands in stiletto heels, and she's not even the type to go for typical ball gown dresses on the red carpet. She's cultivated a distinctive look over the years that definitely sets her apart from other starlets in the industry.
3 Gwen Stefani
Over the years, Gwen Stefani has basically become one of the coolest chicks in the entertainment industry. When she first broke into the scene with her band No Doubt, she was the girl with blue and pink hair rocking retro-inspired clothing. Then, she started with her platinum blonde hair and signature red lip, developing her own fashion line and evolving her style to something far more chic. She's not one to shy away from anything, and definitely tends to rock an edgier style than your average starlet. However, back in her teenage years, she had a way softer look, as this photo she shared to her social media accounts shows. In the shot, a teenaged Gwen rocks very minimal make-up, soft honey blonde hair, and a feminine dress - all very different than her current style. Who would have thought this teenager would end up becoming a style icon when she grew up?
2 Charlize Theron
Okay, this school picture of a 14 year old Charlize Theron is basically the real life version of the movie She's All That, in which Rachel Leigh Cook's character becomes a hot girl the minute she takes off her glasses. Adult Charlize is known for her blonde locks and constantly rocks the red carpet in figure-hugging gowns, but back in her teenage years, she wore huge glasses, kept her hair shorter, and was a brunette. Who would've thought? Nowadays, she seems like the quintessential California girl, at least physically, but she looks far closer to her south African roots in this more casual photo. I mean, it's not quite as drastic a transformation as she undertook for her role in the film Monster, but it just goes to prove that contacts and a good haircut really can make a humongous impact on your overall look. Although, let's face it, Charlize Theron could probably rock any haircut and any style of glasses and still look gorgeous.
1 Lady Gaga
Given how much Lady Gaga loves to experiment with her look - I mean, this is a woman who has shown up in a dress made out of legitimate meat - you might think that her teenage years were filled with experimental hairstyles and crazy outfit choices. However, all that craziness really only developed once she had crafted her Lady Gaga persona - before that, she was just plain old Stefani Germanotta from New York City. While Lady Gaga is known for her platinum blonde hair, regardless of how she decides to style it, back in her teenage years she rocked natural brunette locks. This photo of a teenaged Gaga shows her wearing a plain black t-shirt and neutral skirt - something that seems incredibly average when you consider the crazy outfits she rocks today. However, while there are countless talented singer-songwriters out there achieving moderate success, there's only one Gaga, so apparently her transformation was a smart tactic!
