15 Emotions We Had When JT Said He Is Down For A Collab With Britney Spears

When we heard that Justin Timberlake might want to get involved with Britney Spears again (at least artistically), it's hard to explain how we felt. We had waited for this moment for a long, long time… even if we didn't exactly know that we were waiting for it. When asked at TIFF if he had heard Brit's comment that she wanted to sing with him, Justin responded the way that we definitely wished he would: by saying "Sure! Absolutely, absolutely." We like the way you think, Justin, and we would be so into this idea, too. Now it's honestly all that we can think about. Because we're millennials and we thought that Justin and Britney were THE couple of the early 2000s. We were devastated by their break up and never understood why they couldn't stay together. We mean, they knew how to wear matching denim outfits. Who else can do that? If that doesn't signal true everlasting love, well, we don't know what does. Here are 15 emotions we had when JT said he's down for a collab with Britney Spears.

15 Nostalgia

When we first heard this comment, we couldn't believe it, and it was kind of like time stopped and we were suddenly transported back to the 90s and the 2000s. It was a much better, easier time when you didn't have to worry about being ghosted (because, well, no one was texting) and you met people in person instead of through an app. It was also an absolutely glorious time for pop princesses and princes. We mean, seriously. We loved the girl singers and boy bands of that time period, and we still love them today. While other singers have tried to take the pop crown since then (we're looking at you, Beyonce), it's honestly true that Britney Spears is the original pop star. She stole our hearts from her "… Baby, One More Time" video and we were super sold from that moment on. So to hear that Britney and Justin would be interested in working together was truly amazing. It brought back all those old feelings.

14 Disbelief

When we got the nostalgia out of our systems, we started thinking that maybe this was too unbelievable to actually be true. After all, what's that saying about letting the past be the past? What if things ended for a reason and it's no longer the right time for these two singers to work together? More than that, what if this isn't true at all and they were both just joking or being overly polite or something? What if it's not going to happen at all and we're just being super innocent and naive? Hey, you couldn't exactly blame us, because we live for a good collaboration and this one would totally be the best one yet. It's so hard to believe that these things are true when we read them because we're never sure if it's just a rumor or if it's actually going to occur. Time will tell and we're going to keep our eyes and ears glued to the news in the meantime.

13 Misery

Disbelief then turned to total and complete misery, and then we were feeling pretty down about the whole concept. We started feeling super sorry for ourselves and started wondering why this collaboration has not happened before. Didn't they think that the fans would want this? How long do they have to wait to make us happy? Honestly, these former lovebirds should understand how many fans they still have and how many people still wish they would get back together already. Okay, okay, we know that JT is married and has a baby and all, and that is great for him, and yeah, Britney is doing fine on her own with her adorable kids. But honestly, we're never going to get over their break up and we're never going to stop thinking that we should ship them forever and ever. That's just the way that it is. It's like a pop culture law or something.

12 Excitement

Once we calmed down a bit, we became pretty excited. Look, whether or not this actually happens is totally and completely out of our control, but we just can't help but be totally psyched for it. We didn't even know that this was something that we wanted and yet now it's all that we can think about. It's like this would be the answer to what we're looking for and like it would tell us the meaning of life or something. Hey, we don't make the rules, we just know that we're supposed to be excited about this and so that's exactly how we're going to feel. We feel like little kids in a candy store or on Christmas Eve, waiting for something that we just know is going to be magical and amazing. Plus there's the fact that they've both evolved as artists and we really, really love their new music. We're obsessed with "Can't Stop The Feeling" (naturally -- it's impossible to feel any other way about that song) and we love Brit's new stuff, too.

11 Pride

Then we started feeling pretty proud of ourselves, because of course, we did this. Okay, we didn't, but it feels like we did. Because we've been super fans of Justin and Britney forever and ever and we've always known that they would be back together in some way, shape or form. Maybe we shouldn't try to take any kind of credit for it, but we're going to and that's just that. We want to believe this was our idea, even though we didn't know that this was even a remote possibility. And hey, it still might not be. It still might be a lie or rumor or whatever we want to call it. But we're thinking it might just come true because they know how successful it would be. That song would totally rise to the top of the charts (doesn't matter which chart, it would dominate any and all charts, for sure) and no one would ever stop listening to it. It would be like no other song ever existed.

10 Laughter

Then we started laughing, because come on, this is kind of a funny concept. The idea that these two would sing a song together is enough to make us laugh because we kind of get the feeling that they're both playing a big fat joke on us fans. The way that JT answered was pretty humorous, right? He did say that because he has a baby, he doesn't really read the news and that he hasn't heard it. So when we stop freaking out and start thinking about this logically and rationally, we have to admit that it doesn't sound all that promising. If it was true and more official, wouldn't there be some kind of statement? Wouldn't their PR reps or teams or whoever have to say what's happening? And wouldn't there be more official details than just both of them commenting on the idea? Honestly, we're not sure that it's a real thing, and that kind of makes us laugh because hey, we got kind of excited about the idea. It's a good reminder that we can still fangirl with the best of them.

9 Sadness

Then we became pretty sad, because when we remember all the stuff that Brit has said about JT, it's enough to make us want to crawl into bed forever. Seriously, why are they not together? Back in 2001, she said in an interview, "But I'm not ashamed to say that I love him from the bottom of my heart. As far as love is concerned, with him, too much is not enough. He's everything." We mean… AWWWWWW. We can't even with this quote. We just can't. We don't even know what to think or say or feel because this is just too cute and adorable and sweet and charming. How can you break up with someone after saying that about them? What even happened between them? We never got the full story, did we? We can't even remember why they ended things in the first place. And now we're totally sad and disappointed because we don't know why love has to end and why good people can't be together anymore. It's bumming us out.

8 Suspicion

Then we started feeling suspicious about this whole deal. Because really, we know that rumors fly like crazy in Hollywood and that no one ever seems to be telling the truth. So what if JT was (gasp) lying? What if his saying that he would "absolutely" love to collaborate with Britney Spears was just a total lie? What if he left that red carpet and started laughing hysterically immediately because he couldn't believe that everyone thought he was telling the truth? What if this is some massive joke and we've all fallen for it? It sounds kind of silly, of course, but hey, maybe he didn't know what else to say so he figured he would be super friendly and polite. We know he's a really good guy and that he would never dream of saying anything less than nice about her. They often say if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all, but what was he supposed to do, shrug and change the subject?

7 Doubt

Then we started to feel tons of doubt about this whole deal. Because here's the thing: it's not guaranteed that this collab would be a success. Sure, we can hope for that in our wildest dreams, and we can truly believe in our heart of hearts that it would work out well. But what if we're wrong? What if it's a musical disaster and we can't even listen to it more than once? What if the critics go nuts over how bad it is and everyone makes fun of them and the whole thing is a great big embarrassment for everyone involved? No, we just couldn't handle that. We just think that it might be better if this never happens at all because then we wouldn't have to be humiliated at all and they wouldn't have to, either. Maybe some things are best left in the past and maybe some collaborations just should never, ever happen.

6 Regret

Then we immediately regretted what we just thought. We just couldn't believe that we would ever doubt these two. Of course, they would make musical gold together. How could they not?! We just don't want to live in a world where the possibility of Brit and JT not having a successful collaboration wouldn't exist. We just don't want to believe that it would be bad. We want it to be the most beautiful song ever and we want it to be so popular and trendy that it would be played in every store, mall, bar, restaurant, and airport forever and ever. Now is that really too much to ask?! We don't think so. We honestly don't. We think it's only fair and right since they're basically pop culture royalty (at least to us millennials who still absolutely adore them). So come on guys, what are you waiting for? Why not start recording right now?!

5 Happiness

Then we felt happy because the truth is that these two have sung together before. Okay, it wasn't an official new song. But back in 2009, Justin and Britney sang "Walk This Way" together. It was pretty fun and they did a good job. It was just enough of a tease to really make us want more from the two of them, and it definitely made us think that if they collaborated on a new original song, it would be a match made in music heaven. Seriously. We can't help but feel pretty happy about this prospect because let's face it, life is hard and things get stressful sometimes. We all need something to look forward to it, and even if it's a totally mysterious collaboration that may or may not ever happen, well, we're going to take that and run with it. We're going to be happy about it, even if we seem kind of foolish, and that's just the way that it's going to be.

4 Trust

Then we just felt like, let's just trust this process. Let's trust that things will work out the way that they're supposed. If the collab happens, cool. If not, cool. Okay, not really, but hey, we're trying to be polite and calm and grown-up about the whole deal. The truth is that we trust that this would work out if it did happen because all we have to do is look up when Britney and Justin sang back in the Mickey Mouse Club. There's an absolutely adorable YouTube video of them singing and dancing to "I'll Take You There" (along with some other famous faces that you might recognize). OMG is it ever cute. Justin even basically rapped in that video. Seriously, check it out if you haven't seen it because it's worth watching (and watching, and watching). So at least we know that they've collaborated before and it worked out well.

3 Giddiness

We were happy and excited about this potential news, of course… but then we became plain old giddy. Seriously, it was like we had never heard such fantastic news in our lives before. And no, we're not even kidding about that, not even a little bit. It's pretty cool when you realize something might happen that you never even thought would but you just know it would be absolutely amazing. And that's exactly how we feel about a Justin Timberlake/Britney Spears collab. Now our wheels are turning and our minds are spinning and we're thinking about all the musical possibilities. Would they do a straight-up pop song? Would it have more of an R&B vibe like some of Justin's stuff? Would it have a dance-y vibe like his latest hit single? We don't know… but we kind of wish it could be a great big mash-up of different musical styles and genres. But we just want it to happen, so we know that beggars can't be choosers.

2 Gratitude

We then started feeling pure and utter gratitude. Because really, this is a pretty amazing time that we live in. It's pretty awesome to think that two early 2000s pop stars could get back together (in the musical sense, of course… ) in the year 2016, aka in a totally different era when so many things have changed, even the music business itself. We can't even think of other stars from that time period who could collaborate again today. There just doesn't seem to be anyone else. So really, JT and Brit are our only hope for a millennial nostalgic collab, and we're honestly going to believe with everything that we have that this is going to happen. It might not happen right now, or next month, or even this year. But that's okay. We can be patient. Okay, no, we can't really be patient. But we're going to tell ourselves that we can be.

1 Hope

We then started hoping against hope that this new means there's a small fraction of a chance that Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake could get back together. Yeah, we know we shouldn't wish for that and there's probably zero chance of this ever occurring. But we can't help but wish that it would. We would love for this old-school power couple to be a couple once again because we just know it would work out a whole lot better this time. After all, they're both older and wiser and they have more life and work experience. Plus they each know what it's like to be a pop star from another decade and time period altogether. They also both know what it's like to stage some sort of comeback and to evolve and grow and change. It's perfect, right? They would still be the perfect match. Again, we get that JT's married and all that, and that Britney's probably moved way on from him, but we can hope. We can't stop hoping, so we might as well accept it. Although we know that wishing for romance to strike again is pretty far-fetched, a possible collab isn't, so we're going to keep pinning our hopes on that. We would listen over and over again. And it would totally be our new favorite song.
