15 Famous Faces Spotted Taking The Subway
It's an easy task spotting celebrities - if you know where to look. Sure you can hang outside high-end nightclubs in New York and Los Angeles, or you can just chance your luck on the subways, as there will always be one A-lister trying to get around. It's half luck and half having a good eye for it.
We love seeing stars do as we do, it's very humbling to watch them search a Birkin handbag for their $2.75 ticket money. We are also relieved that we're not the only ones who have to experience the horror of a compact, foul-smelling subway ride.
There are some stars who would not be seen dead on public transport, but for others they are happy to hop on board at any stop. Which makes for some rather entertaining photos like these celebrity snaps that follow.
15 Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise
When Katie Holmes divorced Tom Cruise in 2012 after six years of marriage, one of the reasons was that she craved a normal life for their six-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise. Well, on a sweaty, packed-out subway in the middle of New York, this is certainly a normal life for those who live in the city. The adorable mother and daughter duo have been spotted riding about the city regularly and it's great to see their bond is stronger than ever.
14 Lindsay Lohan and Sam Ronson
Back in 2014, Lindsay Lohan was dating DJ Samantha Ronson, the sister of Uptown Funk producer Mark Ronson, but the pair split labelling the romance "toxic". Lohan told US Weekly magazine, "Two toxic people cannot be together. End of story. We're friends now. That's how it started so I think that's how it was meant to be." Two years on, the 29-year-old actress has moved in with her new boyfriend of four months, Russian heir Egor Tarabasov.
13 Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick
Sarah Jessica Parker is New York. The 50-year-old mother-of-three still looks like a stylish 20-something as she flocks around the city. Well some of that style was bound to rub off after playing fashionista Carrie Bradshaw on HBO's Sex and The City, from 1998 until 2004. She told Harper's Bazaar magazine, "I love the city. I love everything it has to offer. I love the subway, I love hailing a cab, I love traffic and people and all of the possibilities. I believe in all of that still." Did she mention that she loves it?
12 Claire Danes
Claire Danes looks relaxed waiting for her subway to arrive. She is almost unnoticeable as the Emmy and Golden Globe winning star of Showtime's Homeland. But for the 36-year-old, who was born and raised in SoHo, Manhattan, she is more at home here than anywhere else. Danes is currently performing on Broadway in Sarah Burgess' play Dry Powder where she stars alongside Hank Azaria.
11 Rihanna
Rihanna has performed so many shows in London that she now realizes the best way to get around is by ditching the black cabs and just jumping on the subway. The Diamonds singer performed to 20,000 fans at the O2 Arena in Greenwich and a staggering 90,000 at Wembley Stadium. Yet with her huge shades and large bomber jacket, she is able to go incognito - as long as nobody pays attention to a dozen bodyguards surrounding her at any one time.
10 Neil Patrick Harris
Neil Patrick Harris will be spotted on the subway a lot more now that he has moved to Harlem, Manhattan. He splashed out $4 million in 2014 for a 4-bedroomed quadraplex to share with his husband, David Burtka. Harris revealed during an appearance on Charlie Rose, "We like the city of Manhattan. We looked at places that were bridges away, but we kind of wanted to be in it, and I think the most bang for you buck financially, Harlem is a pretty good buy." So he can now add "property advisor" to his current résumé.
9 Keanu Reeves
Keanu Reeves is the perfect gentleman and this video proves it. The Matrix actor jumped on the subway, then gave up his seat when he noticed a woman stood beside him carrying a heavy bag. He then stood for the rest of the journey. Obviously for the 51-year-old Canadian born star, all the practicing of Buddhism over the years has turned him into one of the nicest A-Listers on the planet.
8 Ginnifer Goodwin
Barely recognizable behind her massive shades, Ginnifer Goodwin starred in the drama series Big Love and movies Mona Lisa Smile, Walk the Line, He's Just Not That Into You and Zootopia. The big city is a far distance from where she grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, but it looks as if she is adjusting to city life with her Once Upon a Time co-star and husband, Josh Dallas, very well.
7 Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman
For Anne Hathaway, her subway etiquette has come under fire by many online users for her poor subway etiquette. She has been snapped pole hogging (gasp!) and showing PDA by smooching with husband Adam Shulman (gasp!). Celebrities need to be aware, if they are going to slum it with us regular folk on public transport, then there are strict rules to follow. Also don't even think about allowing your designer handbag a seat of it's own, Hathaway.
6 Tyra Banks and Clay Aiken
Ever since philanthropist, singer-songwriter, actor, author Clay Aiken was a guest on the Tyra Banks Show - the pair have been inseparable. Tyra said the American Idol runner-up has the freshest breath she has ever noticed on anyone, which is perfect when you're talking up-close on the subway. This year Tyra welcomed her first baby, a boy named York Banks Asla, with her boyfriend, photographer Erik Asla. We're sure Clay bought the couple the cutest newborn gift.
5 Beyonce
Back in 2011, Beyonce travelled by subway - now she can just forget it unless she wants to cause massive delays when she is mobbed by fans. Despite being one of the most famous women in the world, behind-the-scenes Beyonce is just a normal woman - or so her mother wants us to believe. Tina Knowles posted on Instagram last year: "Beyonce, I wish people could see how you are when you're not in front of the camera or on the stage. Yes, you are a huge star, but you have somehow managed to stay grounded and humble in the wake of all your success."
4 Jake Gyllenhaal
There's a funny saying in New York: "In the future, everyone will sit next to Jake Gyllenhaal on the subway for 15 minutes." Jake Gyllenhaal is as much a permanent fixture for tourists in New York as is the Empire State Building. Although, he does often appear like a stroppy teenager, slouched over in his seat. Gyllenhaal is known for being friendly with fans, he's just doing the good old fashion celebrity trick of "the more homeless I look - the less anyone will bother me."
3 Arnold Schwarnegger
When Arnold Schwarzenegger took a visit to Russia, the locals enjoyed his company so much they even offered him a job as the mayor of Moscow. Commuters loved seeing their favourite action hero offering selfies on a packed commute through the capital city. Schwarzenegger tweeted a a snap of his journey with a grin that clearly proved he was enjoying himself. Although he did refuse the job offer.
2 Meryl Streep
Meryl Streep, seen here in a stunning throwback photo, revealed to British chat show host, Graham Norton, that she was told around this age that she was "not beautiful enough" for a movie role in King Kong (1976). Streep recalls, "I walked in (to the audition) and (the director's) son was in there very excited. And the father said to his son - in Italian, because I understand Italian - he said "brutta", you know, 'why do you bring me this ugly thing?' So I said to him… 'I understand what you're saying, I'm sorry I'm not beautiful enough to be in King Kong.'" Well the joke is on them - she has since received 29 Golden Globe nominations and won 8.
1 Jay-Z
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXfqRM-53TkIn one of the sweetest exchanges ever, Jay-Z sat next to 67-year-old Ellen Grossman on the New York subway as he was travelling to his own concert at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn. The video clip went viral when the little old lady failed to recognize Jay-Z. Noticing all the cameras around, she asks him, "Are you famous?" and Jay-Z replies, "Not very famous, you don't know me." It is a lovely exchange between the two and also landed Grossman a taste of her very own 15-minutes of fame.
