15 Most Extravagant AF Weddings Ever
We know that weddings are really supposed to be about celebrating the fact that you've found the right person to spend your life with, but many people still like to make the day as special as possible. Celebrities especially have the spare cash to blow on the finer details, like $20,000 earrings and some 50,000 floral arrangements. Some of these weddings actually cost upwards of $110 million, so what can all that money buy you? Custom made gowns and tiaras, rented out castles, and ten-tiered wedding cakes don't even add up to half of it! Prepare to witness some of the most sumptuous and decadent weddings ever known to man! To each their own, but even though an insane amount of money went into these ceremonies, some of the most romantic and passion-filled touches were actually the ones that didn't cost a thing. And as some of these brides and grooms ended up learning, the only thing money can't buy you is real love!
15 Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta-Jones
The wedding of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones was known at the time as the wedding of the year. Tying the knot in November of 2005 at the prestigious Plaza Hotel in New York, the two movie stars had a large security team working to make sure the ceremony was private. No fewer than 50 guards, including 30 policemen, were used on the day. The most extravagant part of this wedding was the invitations-they were reportedly written in invisible ink, and the guests were required to present them in order to enter the ceremony. Obviously privacy was very important to these two! Catherine wore a Christian Lacroix Gown valued at $140,000, as well as a diamond tiara that cost $300,000. Their wedding cake cost $6,000, and the couple spent $100,000 just on chocolates and champagne. They also stayed in the hotel's Presidential Suite, which cost a casual $5,000 per night.
14 Pierce Brosnan & Keely Shaye Smith
Pierce Brosnan married TV journalist Keely Shaye Smith in an Irish ceremony in August of 2001. When we say Irish, we mean everything from the food to the music to the location (Ashford Castle along the Irish coast) maintained the traditions of the emerald isle. There were a lot of details inspired by iconic pieces of popular culture, like the bride's Richard Tylor gown which was modeled after Grace Kelly's own, and cost $60,000. The couple's carrot wedding cake was six tiers and based on the cake served at the wedding of John F. Kennedy and Jackie Onasis. The bride gifted the groom an ice sculpture (nothing says “I'm rich” like an ice sculpture!), which was modeled after The Kiss by Rodin. Pierce's tux cost $12,000, and the wedding's excess of 14,000 blooms just cost a low-key $70,000. Add in her $20,000 earrings and this wedding cost a grand total of $1.5 million.
13 Paul McCartney & Heather Mills
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills didn't end up living happily ever after, as they divorced after six years, but their ceremony was like something out of a fairytale. The two were wed in Ireland, which seems to be the place for enchanting weddings, and rented out a whole castle for the event, which cost them $40,000. The ceremony was Indian themed, and included an abundance of flowers and fireworks, which cost $145,000 and $150,000 respectively. Heather's ring was a 21-carat sapphire-and-diamond beast, and after the party, the couple boarded a yacht costing $19,000 a night. The food at the reception was solely vegetarian, keeping in line with the couple's beliefs. The cake was $4,500, and with everything combined, the wedding racked up a bill of $3 million. The nicest part of this wedding interestingly cost nothing-Paul wrote a song called “Heather”, to which the bride walked down the aisle. Bless!
12 George & Amal Clooney
Just marrying George Clooney makes Amal the luckiest girl on the planet, and to be perfectly honest, we would have been happy marrying him at the registry office. But we suppose when it rains beautiful things it pours, and the couple had an amazing ceremony to match their amazing relationship. The two were wed in Venice, one of the most romantic cities on earth, and ended up with quite a bill to foot by the end of it all. The couple paid for all their guests to come to and stay in Venice, which is what any good host would do, and the accommodation at $4,650 per night per suite cost them nearly $3 million. The water transportation around Venice cost $36,500, while they paid a quarter of a million for flowers. There were 100 guests in attendance, and the five-course reception dinner cost $30,000, not to mention the $160,000 they spent on alcohol.
11 Madonna & Guy Ritchie
It wasn't dreamy Ireland that served as the destination for this wedding, but nearby Scotland's Skibo Castle. Madonna and Guy Ritchie splurged a total of $1.5 million on their wedding (which for them isn't splurging, let's be honest), in order to guarantee them the perfect day. The most extravagant part of this wedding was probably Madge's tiara, which wasn't just a replica but the real crown that was worn by Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco at her wedding to Prince Rainier. Short of marrying a prince yourself, it really doesn't top that, and it's something only Madonna could get her hands on! The majority of the couple's budget went to Madonna's gown, which was made by Stella McCartney and cost $80,000. The booking of the entire castle wouldn't have come cheap either! Unfortunately, huge bills don't mean that the marriage will be as fantastic as the ceremony, and the couple split eight years later.
10 Duke & Duchess Of Cambridge
One of the most expensive weddings on this list was the 2011 nuptials of Wills and Kate, aka the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. It was one of the most televised weddings ever (if not the most televised) and most of the money went towards ensuring that security was tight. That's understandable! 1,900 people attended the wedding, including celebrities like the Beckhams and Elton John. Kate's Alexander McQueen gown cost $400,000, and $1.3 million went toward that, the cake and the flowers alone. It was actually reported that the cake the two cut was the most expensive cake that was ever cut at a wedding! All in all, this wedding which took place at Westminster Abbey and in Buckingham Palace cost $34 million. Our favorite part of this wedding was the balcony kiss that the bride and groom shared after they were married. Life doesn't get much more Cinderella than that!
9 Kim Kardashian & Kanye West
The wedding of Kim Kardashian & Kanye West is one of the most OTT we've ever heard of, mostly because festivities were organized in two different countries. It's been reported that half a million dollars went towards Kim's Givenchy gown, and a quarter of a million dollars was spent just to get the guests to the venue. A lot of money also went towards pre-wedding activities, like the rehearsal dinner which racked up a bill of $681,600. We really want to know what they ate that night! The couple opted for musical entertainment by Andrea Bocelli and Lana del Ray instead of your standard wedding band, which cost $1.7 million. The couple were wed at Forte del Belvedere in the romantic Italian city of Florence, a location which cost $410,000. Included in the ceremony was a 20-foot wall of white flowers for the couple to marry in front of, and a seven-tiered wedding cake.
8 Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston
They were once Hollywood's golden couple, so naturally they needed a wedding that would top all others of the time. Brad and Jen were married in Malibu, California, in a private ceremony away from the paparazzi. Plenty of celebrity guests were in attendance, including Jen's Friends co-stars David Schwimmer and Courtney Cox, and other buddies like Salma Hayek and Cameron Diaz. A few things made this wedding standout from the rest. One was the fireworks display, which was worthy of a Disney movie. Another was the gospel choir in addition to the four bands the couple had providing musical entertainment. There aren't too many photos of the day, but we bet it must have been a pretty sight to say the least, since there were no less than 50,000 flowers decorating the area. The marriage might not have lasted for too long, but the ceremony was definitely an event to remember!
7 Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were Hollywood's other golden couple, and their destination wedding more than reflected their royal status in the entertainment industry. The couple married in Rome, after renting out an idyllic 15th-century castle which overlooked the romantic Lake Bracciano. If these couples are anything to go by, renting a castle definitely seems like the thing to do when you've got cash! Katie walked down the aisle wearing a custom designed dress by Giorgio Armani, and surprises of the night included an expensive display of fireworks. Quite a few celebrities attended the event, including Will and Jada Smith, Jennifer Lopez, and David and Victoria Beckham. Andrea Bocelli was also invited to perform at the wedding, so we can only imagine how romantic the couple's first dance was. Overall, the ceremony cost $2 million, which actually seems like a budget wedding compared to some of the others on this list!
6 David & Victoria Beckham
They're invited to all the other extravagant weddings, so of course the Beckhams' wedding was more on the OTT side of things! This was another fairytale wedding which took place at a castle in Ireland, only David and Victoria took things to a new level by sitting on matching golden thrones. Victoria's gown was made by Vera Wang, and came complete with a 30-foot train. Can you really sit in a throne if you're not wearing a crown? The answer is no, and so Victoria also wore an 18-carat gold crown. Personal touches to this wedding include the nude mini David and Victoria figurines which sat atop the cake, and the coordinated his and hers purple outfits that the couple wore at the reception. It's been reported that the bride and groom even had their own coat of arms designed, and altogether the wedding cost them $800,000, which would be about $1.2 million today.
5 Liza Minnelli & David Gest
When your mom was Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, and you are Liza Minnelli, is there any chance that your wedding could avoid being OTT and fabulous? Nope! Liza Minnelli's wedding to David Gest was packed to the brim with decadence, including a 12-tier wedding cake and a 60-piece orchestra. 500 guests were invited to witness the ceremony, and included in the total $4.2 million bill were performances by legends Tony Bennet and Stevie Wonder. But in our opinion, none of that even compared to the people who were included in the bridal party. The Maid of Honor was casually Liz Taylor, one of the biggest Hollywood legends of all time. And the Best Man was the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. Imagine being a fly on the wall at that reception! Unfortunately, the actual marriage wasn't nearly as grand, and the two were divorced a year later.
4 Celine Dion & Rene Angelil
Celine Dion's wedding to the late Rene Angelil was as beautiful as the couple's relationship. After discovering her in the early 1980s, Rene took Celine under his wing and made her a star. The two married in the early 1990s, and stuck together for 21 years before Rene tragically lost his battle with cancer. The most lavish part of this wedding was probably Celine's dress, which featured 2,000 Austrian crystals and a 20-foot train. The outfit took 1,000 hours to make, and Celine's diamond tiara weighed around 6 pounds. Try carrying that one on your head! Their wedding at the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal was broadcast live on Canadian television, which is a big deal if you're not part of the royal family! Despite the 26-year age gap between these two and the fact that her family didn't approve at all, it's clear that this fairytale wedding actually had a fairytale love story to back it up.
3 Donald & Melania Trump
Donald Trump began enjoying the finer things in life long before he became President of the United States, and his wedding to Melania was no exception! Let's start with the gown. Costing $125,000, this custom Dior dress was embroidered with 1,500 rhinestones, 295 feet of satin and casually weighed around 60 pounds. Forget Celine's tiara-imagine being stuck in this all day! The couple married in the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Florida's Palm Beach, and then held the reception at the Mar-a-Lago estate, which Trump owns. 400 guests attended the wedding, and each received a plate of food catered by Jean-Georges Vongerichten worth $275, or $110,000 in total. Tony Bennett and Billy Joel performed in addition to a 36-piece orchestra, but it's thought that the couple were able to pay a discounted rate. Life's funny-the richer you are, the more contacts you have and the less you pay!
2 Prince Charles & Lady Diana
The most expensive wedding on this list belongs to Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. $110 million went into ensuring that this 1981 royal wedding was perfect, and even though the marriage that followed it was nothing short of hopeless and tragic, the wedding itself was almost as lavish as they come. Still shown on the History channel today, the event featured 30 wedding cakes. Is that how much you need to feed the 3,000 people invited? Yikes-surely they had some leftovers! Designed by David Emanuel and featuring a 25-foot train, Diana's wedding dress cost around £9,000 and in all its puffiness, was the envy of every '80s girl. The two married at the iconic St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and the massive bill ended up coming down to the vast amount of security required for the event. We guess that being a royal definitely has its ups and downs!
1 Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries
It wasn't the most expensive wedding on this list, but the title of most extravagant and OTT wedding definitely goes to Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries. The nuptials were filmed as part of Kim's reality TV show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and featured a whole bunch of things that we can't get our heads around! Kim wore not one but three Vera Wang gowns to her wedding, and showed them off for 500 guests. She also sported a headpiece worth $2.5 million, and spent $2 million on followers. The cake cost $6,000, and from what we can see from the footage, the whole reception looked like a pretty fun place to be. The whole thing might have been a little rushed though, considering the marriage was over 72 days later. But it's okay, Kim went on to have another gorgeous wedding, and Kris also moved on to much happier days!
