15 Nastiest Band Break Ups
Is there anything more devastating for a fan than when a band breaks up? If we've learned anything over the years, it's that just because people have a lot of musical chemistry with one another and look great on an album cover together, doesn't mean they necessarily get along. The broken hearts of generations of fans also prove that while band members may like each other in the beginning, it's totally a different story after a few years of constant touring and recording together. Sadly, some of the best and most successful bands have called it quits or lost members before their time, and under some pretty messy circumstances! Some have reunited and solved their differences, but some still hate each other to this day. The following 15 bands experienced either the total dissolution of their group, or a member departing prematurely, and none of them were free of a little bad blood!
15 *NSYNC
The *NSYNC boys sold over 50 million records, were at the height of their success and oh yeah, were the biggest boy band on the planet. No big deal. So what went wrong? As we all know, Justin Timberlake felt that it was time to explore a solo career and began to work on his own projects. This worked out really well for him… and is actually still working out really well! Justin became one of the biggest male stars in the world, so naturally, the other boys grew a little bit green-eyed and eventually called it quits. There didn't appear to be much bad blood at the time, but details have emerged since then which suggest otherwise. *NSYNC member Lance Bass stated in his memoir that Justin caused the end of the group: “I felt completely betrayed… ” he said. We sympathize, but at the same time, we need some JT in our lives!
14 All Saints
This is one group who was totally honest about their feelings for each other! British girl group All Saints, consisting of Shaznay Lewis, Melanie Blatt, and Nicole and Natalie Appleton, have admitted that they split apart in 2001 simply because they hated each other. Melanie told talk-show host Alan Carr that, “We just weren't getting on anymore, and we kind of hated each other, so we just thought… let's stop.” That's putting it bluntly! Although '90s kids were devastated to hear of the girls' split at the time, we feel like that was the right thing to do! So many bands stick it out while hating each other for the sake of the fans and success, and that can't be healthy for the well-being of these artists whom we love so much. It all worked out for All Saints, though, who surprisingly began to appreciate each other after disbanding and have since reunited.
13 Spice Girls
Let's just admit right now that Ginger leaving the Spice Girls was one of the most heartbreaking moments of all our lives. While the girl group was in the middle of their North American tour in 1998, Ginger, aka Geri Halliwell's solicitor announced that she was leaving the group due to differences between her and her bandmates, and the redhead went on to achieve her own solo success. The other four girls stuck it out for nearly two years, but eventually, the whole thing fizzled out. Mel B, aka Scary fell pregnant, the group experienced a change in musical direction and production, and of course, Victoria 'Posh' Beckham was on the rise to superstardom herself. It was certainly the end of an era when the girls went on an indefinite hiatus in December 2000! They did briefly reunite in 2007, but there have been no plans for any further activity.
12 Guns N' Roses
This was one awkward split up! The band was achieving major success in 1987 with their record Appetite for Destruction, but only three years later, things started spiraling downward fast when the group kicked out Steven Adler, the original drummer, because of his serious addiction to illegal substances. Fair enough, we say! But then Axl Rose started acting really badly and according to his bandmates Slash and Duff McKagan, would show up super late to shows and even refused to go onstage. While Axl denies this, the others maintain that they eventually signed away the rights to their name, and then split up for good at the end of 1993, after their Use Your Illusion tour finished up. Things have gotten a lot uglier since then, with Axl labeling Slash a “cancer." That's some pretty strong hate! He reportedly won't attend events where his ex-bandmates are in the room. Whoa.
11 Fleetwood Mac
Okay, so things may have turned out okay in the end for Fleetwood Mac, but anything that involves a physical altercation is going to land a band on our list, whether they later sorted it out or not! Reports have been muddled, but there was allegedly a physical fight between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham in 1987. The band also constantly changed their line-up throughout the '70s, which makes us think that things couldn't have been faring that well behind the scenes. Things also got a little bit awks when band member Christine McVie and husband John McVie divorced in 1976 since he was the band's guitarist. This is why it's never a good idea to mix business with pleasure. Just ask ABBA! But seriously, though, props to Fleetwood Mac for continuing on through it all. They're due for a world tour in 2017 and remain one of the best-selling acts ever.
10 Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd's demise was a long time coming, although fans still wish that it did not have to end the way it did! Things turned rocky when Syd Barrett, one of the band's founder-members, was expelled from the band. That is a tough blow! Then in the early 80s, things turned even more grim when Roger Waters and David Gilmour, who were the two main members and songwriters of the group, began to disagree over the content of their album. The disagreements got worse and worse until Roger left to work on his own solo projects, and things were pretty bitter for a while. Thankfully, though, the two former bandmates have put their differences aside and today are able to hold it together for a charity gig here and there. Bless! There is nothing that fans like seeing more than their feuding idols patching things up. It gives us all the feels.
9 The Sugababes
It's always shady when one member is mysteriously replaced in a successful group because you never really know if they quit or if they were forced out. Things were definitely awkward for the Sugababes when original member Siobhan Donaghy announced she was departing the group in 2001 to begin a fashion career but later admitted there was too much in-group fighting and ex-bandmate Keisha Buchanan forced her out because she was “the first bully” she'd ever met. Heidi Range from Atomic Kitten was brought in to replace Siobhan. A few years later, member Mutya Buena left and was replaced with Amelle Berrabah, who then left as well. The last original member, Keisha, departed the band in 2009, stating on Twitter that it wasn't her choice to leave. Gosh! It's hard to keep up with all these ladies, but it sounds like it was very difficult to get settled in the Sugababes.
8 One Direction
Here's a more recent split that still has the whole world talking. One Direction's Zayn Malik caused quite a stir in March 2015 when he left the boy band during the Asia leg of their world tour. In all the official statements made through the boys' representatives, it seemed like the remaining four members wished Zayn nothing but the best. But fans didn't buy that for long when Zayn and ex-bandmate Louis Tomlinson got into a spat on Twitter regarding Zayn's new BFFE, the producer Naughty Boy. Despite that, the boys maintained that they wished Zayn well, though they were clearly angered by his decision. One Direction went on a hiatus following the release of their album Made in the A.M. at the end of 2015, and in 2016, member Niall Horan released his own solo music while bandmate Harry Styles pursued his acting goals and Louis concentrated on fatherhood.
7 The Eagles
Despite being the biggest band in the United States by 1980, things still turned messy for the Eagles. With their growing success, the group is said to have come with an increasingly toxic atmosphere, which led original members Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon to quit. The group's guitarist Don Felder was growing increasingly hostile to members Don Henley and Glenn Frey, who allegedly liked to be in total control. While the band's new bassist, Timothy B. Schmit did what he was told, remaining member Joe Walsh was always too much under the influence to worry about being bossed around by the other members. Not a very positive environment! In the end, Don Felder was rude to the wife of a senator backstage because he didn't want the band being involved in anything political, and this is said to have aggravated Glenn, who then threatened Don onstage in front of thousands of fans.
6 Destiny's Child
We'll go ahead and just say it: without a Destiny's Child break up, we wouldn't have the Beyoncé we have today. But that doesn't mean that the break-up was any less upsetting at the time! Fans first noticed things were suspicious when long-time members LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson were mysteriously absent from the 'Say My Name' video after it was announced that they had left the group. However, both girls maintained that they never left the group and that their manager Matthew Knowles, who is also Beyoncé's father, favored his daughter. Bey and Kelly didn't waste any time in replacing their old bandmates with Farrah Franklin and Michelle Williams, meanwhile, LaTavia and LeToya sued Matthew for his actions. Then not long after, Farrah stated that she was kicked out of the group after she was too sick to perform. Bey has since referred to Farrah, LaTavia, and LeToya as “bad seeds”.
5 The Beatles
They were perhaps the most iconic musical act of all time, but that doesn't mean they were above in-group feuding. Though they promoted peace through their music, Beatles members John Lennon and Paul McCartney are said to have secretly grown frustrated with each other as time went on. Paul publicly announced that he was departing the Beatles in 1970 (we weren't alive at the time, but we picture it to have been like Zayn leaving 1D multiplied by a million), but reportedly, John had already announced that he was leaving the band. There weren't Twitter feuds in those days, but the two musical geniuses got in each other's faces through their art. Paul's song 'Too Many People" is said to be a dig at John, while John's "How Do You Sleep" is also said to be a thrower of some major shade. It seems even the most talented among us can get salty!
4 Fifth Harmony
The wounds from this one are still red and raw! It's only been a matter of weeks since Fifth Harmony's Camilla Cabello walked out on the group, but things have already turned ugly between her and her former bandmates Dinah Jane, Lauren, Normani, and Ally. Basically, while Camilla says that she made her intentions to leave clear, the other girls insist that they found out she was leaving through her representatives. That's pretty low if it is true! Who do you believe? The girls also say that they made every effort to reconcile their differences and work things out over the group's final year together, but Camilla never responded to any of their efforts. We never noticed anything wrong at the time, but if you look back over recent interviews of the girls together, there does seem to be some subtle negative energy between Camilla and the rest of the ladies.
3 The Pussycat Dolls
Though they were only at the top of their game for a hot minute, the line “Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?” will be forever embedded into our minds, and so we'll never be able to forget the Pussycat Dolls. It was clear from the beginning that Nicole had a slightly more active role in the group than the other girls. It's since been revealed that Nicole sang like 90% of all the vocals and even provided harmonies and backing to her own voice, which is funny since there were five other girls there. Anyone could see where this was heading, and Carmit Bachar was the first member to leave. After another album, the remaining four members left until Nicole was the only Doll. A whole bunch of new girls were brought in, which is a slap in the face to the old members, but it was never the same.
2 Danity Kane
Danity Kane split up a few times, but things reached a whole new level when things got physical between the ladies. In the recording studio one day, at a time when tensions were obviously high, Dawn Richards punched Aubrey O'Day in the back of the head. Yep, that will tear a group apart pretty darn quickly! Aubrey reported the incident to the police and is said to have had witnesses to the event. She said this of the punch: “I cannot condone or excuse any form of physical violence, particularly at the hands of someone I considered family. Disagreements happen. But a war of words and ideas should never end in physical aggression." Wise words! Physical fights are a whole other thing! Aubrey has also made it clear that she didn't engage with Dawn or threaten her in any way to provoke the attack, which occurred while she was speaking to an associate.
1 Oasis
There is no proof of the physical fight which is said to have marked the end of the band Oasis, but plenty of reports swear it took place. In 2009, backstage at a music festival in Paris, the Gallagher brothers allegedly got into such a terrible fight that they abruptly terminated their band. Noel Gallagher had this to say: “It is with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.” You can just hear it through his words that whatever took place between the brothers was totally serious. Apparently, after an intense argument, Liam smashed one of Noel's guitars and then the boys threw punches at each other. We know that it must have been pretty life-changing because the brothers haven't spoken to each other since that day.
