15 Reasons 'Riverdale' Is The Perfect Millennial Show
Chances are you're either a.) totally obsessed with Riverdale or b.) haven't gotten around to watching it yet. If the latter is true, you honestly have zero excuse. Because this new teen drama is the most fun you're going to have watching a TV show all year. Okay, so 2017 has barely gotten started and maybe that's a super bold claim, but anyone who has watched the pilot definitely agrees with that statement. This show is everything that you want in a television series and more. Much, much more. Because it's based on your beloved Archie comics which you definitely read voraciously as a kid. Not only that but you collected them. And you definitely wanted to be Betty. Or maybe you wanted to be Veronica. Or both. Hey, maybe you just wanted to date Archie. And no, it's not weird that you wanted a comic book character to be your boyfriend. It was actually pretty normal. Read on to find out 15 reasons why Riverdale is the perfect millennial show.
15 We Grew Up With Archie Comics
Archie comics are a millennial thing. They just are. Sure, they may have been created back in 1939 which is basically a million years ago, and sure, other generations have read and collected them, too. But they were popular in your neighborhood/city/town back in the 90s when you were growing up and so that's all that you know. If you are in the mood for a heavy dose of nostalgia, then Riverdale is totally your show. Better yet, grab your friends and binge the first few episodes together. Make it a girls' night with junk food (and, okay, wine, because no girls' night is really complete without wine). You get bonus points if these are old childhood friends that you grew up with and even read Archie comics with. Maybe these are the girls that got you into the comic book series, to begin with. Now you can really bond and take a trip down memory lane.
14 All The Pop Culture References
This show is SUPER into pop culture references and the best part is, they are all references that you totally and completely get. Yes, really. You don't have to sit there scratching your head, wondering if you should rewind because you just didn't get that reference. And you don't have to debate whether that will make you feel worse because maybe you won't even understand what that character said the second time around. Or the third time. That would be really humiliating. Instead, these characters reference amazing shows that you love like Mad Men. There's a reference to the fact that everyone in the town of Riverdale is glad that they have HBO, they mention the movies Blue Jasmine and Breakfast At Tiffany's, and there's a reference to how James Franco always has about a million creative projects on the go at any given time. This is a HUGE reason to watch since just think how proud you will feel when you understand every single pop culture reference.
13 The Dialogue Is Super Trendy
If there's one thing that you love, it's teen dramas. The more they are like a soap opera, the better. If there's another thing that you love about teen dramas that are basically soap operas, it would be super trendy dialogue. You live for this stuff. Sure, you and your BFFs might not actually TALK like this, but you can dream. You wish that you lived in a world that felt more like a sophisticated and elegant television show. You wish that you could say things that felt a bit more poetic than "Hey, how are you?" or "I was just watching TV tonight." Ugh, you feel so uncultured and so boring. So Riverdale is totally your jam. When Veronica moves to Riverdale, she says, "I feel like I'm wandering through the lost epilogue of Our Town." Veronica (again), says, "Can't we just liberate ourselves from the tired dichotomy of jock, artist. Can't we, in this post-James Franco world, be all things at once?" OMG Veronica. You just said the greatest and smartest thing in the history of teen TV. Congrats.
12 The 90s Stars
It's like this show was made for you or something. At the very least, it was totally cast for you. Luke Perry plays Archie's dad. YES, LUKE PERRY. AKA Dylan McKay from Beverly Hills 90210. AKA the hottest, dreamiest, most amazing character. Well, at least until McDreamy or Jess came along. If that's not perfect, then what is?! Mädchen Amick plays Betty's mom and since she was on Twin Peaks (and also Sherry on Gilmore Girls), that's just the best news ever. There will probably be a whole bunch of guest stars who you loved back in the 90s and so that is just yet another reason to tune into this glorious show. You are in 90s television heaven. It's really the best. There is no better decade than the 90s. Sure, you didn't have iPhones or Netflix or any of the things that you adore today, but you did have copious amounts of plaid shirts and the best teen dramas around. And you could wear a choker necklace without looking weird. So there were definitely some perks to that decade.
11 The Love Triangle
Of course, the classic love triangle between Archie, Betty, and Veronica is still happening in this adaptation. There is really no way that they couldn't do this. It would be illegal or something. Sure, it's a bit more subtle and there are some other storylines going on, but this is definitely something that is keeping you tuning in. Love triangles are definitely a millennial thing because just think about how many TV shows they have been featured on. Literally, every show that you grew up watching has some kind of love triangle, whether it was super obvious or much quieter. And you love them. They are so exciting, sometimes dark, and always fun. The best thing about love triangles is that you usually want all of the characters to end up together. Well, not ALL of them as in the three of them as a couple, but you totally believe that Dylan would be great with both Kelly and Brenda. Just like you believe that Archie Andrews should date Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper. It's seriously confusing.
10 It Was Made For Social Media
This kind of show was made for social media -- or at least for the platform of Twitter. Just imagine live-tweeting this show. You could totally do it. It would be even more fun than watching it to be honest because you could write down your thoughts and feelings about it in real time and also quote all the best lines. It would be like creating a digital (and public) time capsule so you can look back on this evening and realize that you just had the best time ever. Plus you can invent your own hashtags and that would really be the most fun that you've had all year so far. Just imagine the possibilities. The show would also work well on Facebook or Instagram since you could post pretty photos of the show as you watch it and your friends would get super jealous and realize that, hey, they have to start watching too. It's up to you to spread the word about this amazing show and make sure it gets the fans and viewers that it deserves.
9 The Dreamy Boys
You wouldn't watch just any TV show. Nope, definitely not. If you're going to use what little free time you have and invest in a television series, there have to be dreamy guys. It's just a rule of nature or something. That's why you tune into shows like Grey's Anatomy and Nashville. Okay, okay, so you love the other characters and at this point, you're pretty invested in the storylines, but the hot boys don't hurt. This show has a LOT of cute boys. There's Archie, of course, along with his sidekick Jughead (who is giving dark and twisty Meredith Grey a run for her money). There are also Moose and Reggie who are pretty cute too. Basically, you will NEVER be without eye candy when you watch this show. There's also Luke Perry and you just know that he's still a dreamboat, even all these years later. You really have no excuse not to watch this show but if watching cute boys is number one on your priority list (as it should be), you should know that this show delivers.
8 There's A Mystery
You LOVE mysteries. You love TV shows with mysteries even more. It's basically a total Gen Y thing to like mysteries as much as you do and so that's why this is the perfect show for you. The fun starts from the pilot when it turns out that Cheryl Blossom's brother Jason has drowned. Then it turns out that, well, maybe he didn't only drown. Maybe something else -- something darker and more sinister -- happened. Talk about intrigue. Of course, you won't be able to stop watching once you start, but luckily for you, only a few episodes have aired so far. So you can watch them all in one evening. Or maybe that's not so lucky after all since you will get addicted and fast and then will want to cry since you will have to wait another week for a new show. Sorry about that. That's really the curse of being a TV fan and there's never anything that you can do about it (well, besides getting into another show in the meantime, but that just creates another problem).
7 It Feels Like 'Gossip Girl'
Riverdale could be compared to a whole bunch of teen shows, but the most obvious comparison is definitely Gossip Girl. The thing is that Veronica seems totally made for that show. She's wealthy, she's got a super complicated relationship with her parents (her mom seems kind of okay, but her dad is in trouble for a huge financial issue), and oh yeah, she's drop-dead gorgeous. She wears clothes so well, it's like it's her job, and she is basically Blair Waldorf. Yes, really. She could be Blair. Sometimes it's like Blair was transported into this show and given a different name or something. Veronica is just as witty and clever as Blair, just as pretty, just as rich, and just as hilarious. So if you're in serious withdrawal after Gossip Girl ended (that's still a thing, even though it ended quite a while ago), it's time to get invested in this show. You won't be sorry and you will find it cures the pain really well.
6 It's A Binge-Worthy Show
If there's one thing that you love, it's a show that you can binge. Right?! It's not enough to watch a good show these days. You have to want to watch EVERY episode that's been made so far. All in one sitting. Hopefully with some coffee and/or junk food. And on a Sunday afternoon. That's the holy grail of binge-watching. This show is so binge-worthy, you won't even be able to handle it, and that's another reason why Riverdale is the perfect millennial show. So call your girlfriends and make it a party or experience. You won't want to watch this show alone since there are so many OMG moments, you will want to turn to your BFF who's sitting right beside you and discuss things ASAP. If you watch this alone, you're going to regret it since you will have to text everyone that you know and ask if they've seen it yet. It's going to suck. So make sure you're with your friends. Just a warning.
5 There Are Modern Storylines
At its heart, this show is definitely a coming-of-age storyline and there are a lot of modern storylines that prove that this is the perfect millennial show. Since it's 2017 now, there are obviously a lot of things about modern life that prove that we are more open about things and more interested in celebrating our differences than past generations were. In Riverdale, Betty is good friends with Kevin Keller, who is openly and proudly gay. He wasn't part of the original comic book series and was created back in 2010. His portrayal in the comics went so well that GLAAD gave the series an award which is pretty awesome. So it makes sense that he would be a huge part of this TV adaptation. Jughead never seemed to have a girlfriend or even a love interest in the series (well, unless you counted junk food) and in the show, he's supposedly asexual. The show is definitely interested in exploring the fact that not everyone is the same and that differences are what make you who you are. It's pretty cool for what seems like another teen show.
4 It's All About Nostalgia
You love nostalgia, right? You definitely do. You long for a simpler time… while you love your iPhone, Netflix subscription, the ability to order anything that you want from the magical internet, and all kinds of modern conveniences. Hey, you're not alone there, so you don't have to feel conflicted or guilty about it. The cool thing about being alive today (and being a millennial) is that you really can have it all. Well, if having it all means being nostalgic for a time that came before you and still loving having hot water and take-out and all that good stuff. Unless you want to watch a show from back in the day, you can't usually get that nostalgic factor in your entertainment. And sometimes you don't feel like watching something super old since let's face it, old shows can seem super dated and much duller than you were expecting. You only have a bit of free time, after all, and you don't want to waste it watching something boring. Riverdale totally gives you the best of both worlds: a modern show with a good dose of nostalgia. Perfect.
3 It's Got That OMG Factor
You've probably watched at least a few episodes of this gem so you know the big news is that innocent Archie Andrews hooked up with his music teacher. And if you haven't watched, sorry but you've probably read this spoiler by now since it's definitely all over the internet. And if you haven't, then sorry but there's no excuse since you should be watching this. Okay. Now that that's cleared up, here's the deal: there is a real OMG factor to Riverdale. The fact that Archie hooked up with his teacher is a huge plot line and is really interesting. Sure, it's been done before, but that doesn't really matter. Not when the drama is this good and this juicy. You definitely can't watch just ANY show since you are so conditioned to expect big storylines and really interesting things happening all the time. Thankfully, this show stacks up and will meet all of your super high entertainment standards.
2 It's The New It Show
Sure, you have your own ideas and opinions about what's cool, and you don't always want to follow what everyone else is doing. That's pretty much the opposite of cool. But sometimes, you care about what people consider fun and trendy since you don't want to be totally left out. That would be worse, right? Thankfully, if you're watching Riverdale, you're already cool because this is definitely the new "it" show (or at least one of the "it" shows of early 2017). Rest assured that you totally know what's up and you're one of the cool kids. Sometimes your pop culture preferences and entertainment choices are like one big popularity contest. You want people to think that you know what the good stuff is and that you have your finger on the pulse… but on the other hand, you want to watch shows that you actually like and aren't just pretending to like. Luckily for you, this is one show that does both things: makes you look cool and is also really good.
1 You Can Totally Relate
The number one reason that this show is perfect for millennials? You can totally and completely relate. You might find yourself in any of the main characters. Maybe you're Betty and you're sick and tired of being the sweetheart and want to be something different. You're feeling trapped by everyone else's expectations of who you should be and what you should want and what your life and future should look like. Maybe you're Veronica, totally bored with your life but in a different way -- because you think that things were a whole lot better before. Or maybe you can relate to Archie who is definitely torn between being two people: the guy that everyone loves (and the guy that could date someone his own age) and the guy who wants to be a musician and is falling for his much older teacher. Pretty interesting stuff. At its core, Riverdale is a coming-of-age story, and you're still young, so while you may think that you have yourself and your life figured out, you really don't. You're always changing, always learning, and always becoming a better person. You just don't live in a town that is creepier than it appears at first. Well, at least you probably don't…
