15 Reasons 'Seinfeld' Is Your Life
Chances are, you grew up with Seinfeld. The hilarious and clever New York-set sitcom is known for being a sitcom about absolutely nothing. But while that it's claim to fame, it really talks about so many amazing topics of every day that it's still crazy relatable, no matter how much time has passed since the pilot went on the air back in July of 1989. You may have started watching random episodes as a kid when it happened to be on TV or maybe your parents were huge fans. And maybe in high school and college, as you got older, you took it upon yourself to check out the show from start to finish. It definitely never disappoints, whether you make it a real binge-watch or just watch one episode every once in a while when the mood strikes you. If you love this show, chances are you can seriously relate. Here are 15 reasons that Seinfeld is your life.
15 You're Neurotic
Let's just be real here, Seinfeld is about super neurotic characters. The entire crew of Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer are total worrywarts, and they're pretty crazy too. That's part of their charm, though, and it's why you adore this show so much. You're just as neurotic as they are. The great thing about watching this sitcom is that whenever you think that you're being too crazy, you can just be totally comforted by the episodes. This is really a great example of characters who are neurotic but are still functioning adults. Well, mostly. The thing that makes this show so totally special is that the characters being neurotic is the entire point of the show, not just a random character trait or quality. So when you need some comfort food TV and want to be proud of your neuroses, go ahead and cue up your fave episode.
14 You Overanalyze Everything
You don't think that Elaine is crazy for dumping a guy over punctuation (she freaks out when her boyfriend doesn't write an exclamation point when relaying a phone message) and you don't think that Jerry and George examine their lives too much. In fact, you totally do the exact same things. You can totally relate to these two scenarios because okay maybe you've done the same… once. Your friends and family think you're pretty nuts because you're always talking about things that are going on and analyzing them within an inch of their life. You don't think it's weird, though, because this is just the way that you're wired. You couldn't imagine going through life without freaking out about everything that's happening to you. So the next time your boyfriend tells you to chill out and calm down, you can just quote the show a bunch of times and hopefully he'll stop bugging you.
13 Your Dating Life Sucks
Friends, despite the obvious super platonic nature of the title, is usually thought of a sitcom that focuses on love. After all, the characters are always dating new people, or trying to get their significant other to commit, and the Chandler/Monica relationship is a super big part of the later seasons. But even though it might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the show, Seinfeld is also pretty dating-focused, and for good reason: it makes comedy out of crappy dates and awkward new relationships. It even manages to make best friends trying to date a hilarious situation -- remember when Elaine and Jerry attempted to become a couple?! Yeah, it didn't exactly work out so well. Plus there's the fact that in the early seasons, Jerry does his stand-up at the beginning and end of every single episode, and sometimes he mentions dating issues. So you can always tune in and find a hilarious joke about dating.
12 You're Elaine
If you're Elaine, then you should be totally happy, because she is honestly the most amazing character in the world. Well, maybe not more amazing than Lorelai Gilmore (because honestly is there anyone better?), so let's just say the two women are totally tied. If you can relate to Elaine, then you've totally had a crazy boss, you've hated your job, you've met a guy via work then hated him, and you've been super picky about your romantic suitors. Elaine is so hilarious, so you probably have an absolutely amazing sense of humor, too. If people love being around you because you're always game to have fun, you always have some jokes and smart lines ready, and you're generally just really sweet, then you're totally an Elaine type of girl. It's pretty easy to relate to her, even all these years and decades later, so it's no wonder that you do.
11 You're George
You're probably asking, how can you possibly be Elaine but be George, too? Well, you totally can, which is the beauty of Seinfeld. The thing is that George is so loveable. He's charming in his own way, funny when he's not trying to be, and he's often pretty awkward, nerdy and embarrassed. That's so relatable, right? Who hasn't humiliated themselves at least once before (but probably a whole lot more times -- more like a billion)? If you've ever found yourself at a job interview realizing that you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, or you were forced to move back in with your parents thanks to long your job or wanting to save some money, well, you're totally George. You don't have to feel bad because George may have his low moments, but for the most part, he tries his best to be confident, so you should totally do the same.
10 You Have A BFF
Jerry and George are totally best friends, and it's the ultimate sitcom bromance. They grab food at their fave diner, they visit each other's apartments (well, okay, it's a bit unbalanced because they mostly hang out at Jerry's place), they chat about everything under the sun, and they just really care about each other. If you have a BFF, which you probably do, then you can totally relate to these pals. It doesn't even matter that they're guys and you're not, because a lot of their conversations could totally apply to what you and your own BFF go through. All four of you go through dating issues, work issues, family issues, apartment issues… The list of topics goes on and on. Seinfeld is a pretty charming, heartwarming friendship show when you really think about it, and it can make you feel pretty thankful to have a best friend as great as Jerry and George are.
9 You've Accidentally Gained Weight
In the season 5 episode "The Non-Fat Yogurt" the gang is super excited that a new frozen yogurt place has opened up in NYC. The kicker? It's totally non-fat. Really. You can eat as much as you want of it and not gain a single pound. Well, that's at least what Jerry and his friends think… until Elaine gains 7 pounds and Jerry gains 8. Oops. Hilarity ensues and they go to a lab and get the yogurt tested, and find out that, yeah, it has fat in it. If you've ever accidentally gained weight, which of course you have because it happens to literally everyone, then you can totally relate to this episode. Maybe you ate too much peanut butter one summer or too many avocados (hey, it really does happen to everyone!). After that, Elaine and the gang totally swear off frozen yogurt, and that was really for the best.
8 You're In Denial
Everyone is in denial about at least one thing at all times. You could think that your job situation is going to work out when your boss is pretty evil and things aren't going well for you at the office. You could think that your relationship is going to magically improve when you really can't stand your boyfriend anymore, he's annoying you 24/7 and he's not even very nice anymore. You went on an okay first date and the guy was so bored he kept checking his iPhone, but yeah, you think he's totally going to ask you out again. Sorry but if you think any of these things, you're in total and complete denial. George is often in denial too. The most obvious example? When he moved back home and said he thought it would become super awesome. Um, nope. Sorry George. It's never going to be cool.
7 You Hate Parties
One of the greatest Seinfeld episodes ever is called "The Stranded" where Elaine and Jerry go to a party. It's not just any party: it's exactly like every single party you've ever gone to. In other words, it's super boring and there are crazy pretentious people there. They decide on a signal so they can easily escape whoever they are talking to, but unfortunately, that's not enough because they are so bored it's not even funny anymore. Except, of course, it's funny, because it's Elaine and Jerry. They just can't escape the boring people. You can totally relate and this is basically what happens to you every time you go to a party or event. You start off the evening with super good intentions and you're super excited, thinking you're going to meet some fascinating people and talk about interesting things. But, of course, parties are never as great as you think they're going to be, and soon you're stuck talking to the dullest doorknob of a person.
6 You Get Annoyed At The Drop Of A Hat
The best thing about Jerry and George and Elaine is that anything can bug them. Literally anything. One minute they're at a restaurant or standing in the aisles of a grocery store, totally normal and having a good time… and the next second, they're totally pissed off or irritated. And being who they are, they can't be normal after they've realized they're not enjoying themselves. They have to keep fidgeting or talking about it and basically, are going to annoying everyone else around them. You're like that too… and if you're honest, you know that the people in your world do that kind of stuff, too. It's actually pretty normal. It's like when you notice that your best friend or boyfriend has a really weird way of snapping their fingers or saying a word in a certain way. Once you notice that, you can't stop noticing it and it definitely can be pretty annoying.
5 You're A TV Fan
Of course, you are. How could you not be?! TV is only the most incredible and glorious form of entertainment that there possibly could be. Hello, Netflix? How else could you be transported to far away worlds and follow the stories of all kinds of people? Oh yeah, you could always read a book… But there's just something so special and fabulous about TV. Thankfully, Seinfeld totally gets you, and they even had an episode where everyone watched Melrose Place. Jerry started off lying saying that of course, he didn't watch the show. Eventually, the truth came out and by the end of the episode, the whole gang was watching it… and loving it, of course. You can't watch MP and not fall in love. It's just not going to be possible. It's always great when your fave TV show pays tribute to another one of your fave TV shows.
4 You Say The Wrong Things
Hey, you can't help it. You can't be totally perfect all the time, right? Who could? This quote from Kramer is so great: "I can't believe he's in a coma. He's got my vacuum cleaner." It's so totally hilarious because it's so crazy inappropriate. If you've ever said anything that was totally wrong for that situation, you know that this is really awkward, but it can be impossible to stop. Of course, it's hilarious when you see someone else do this, but it's super awkward when you're the one saying the crazy words. Sometimes this can even be pretty humiliating if you're around a bunch of other people, and then something sad or tragic happens… and you're the silly one totally saving the wrong thing. Oh well. Just think of Kramer the next time this happens to you, and you'll be reminded that while it sucks, this happens more often than you think.
3 You're Always Confused
George is honestly at his best when talking about his girl problems, and you can always relate to him. He says that when he's into someone, they hate him and vice versa. Who doesn't that happen to?! It seems like it's impossible to find someone that you like and who likes you back sometimes. You know that does happen since you've been part of a couple before and you, of course, know lots of happy couples… but really, it can be pretty confusing. It's like the dating kiss of death. When you have a good first date, the guy never texts again. When you have a bad one, you hear from them non-stop until you basically have no choice but to block their number. It's like a law of the universe or something, and George knows exactly what's up. So when dating gets too frustrating, which of course it will cue up Seinfeld. You'll feel so much better.
2 You Feel Stupid Sometimes
George is always joking about being stupid -- in one scene, he says, "Have some respect, no one's a bigger idiot than me." This is crazy hilarious because he honestly is one. But that's okay because you are too… and everyone on the planet is. We just love that he can admit it, which you're guilty of doing too. People make mistakes, say the wrong stuff, do the wrong thing… and it's all good. You often do the wrong thing when you misunderstand a situation or don't have all the information that you should, and that honestly happens to everyone. It's impossible to live a perfect life, and it would also be boring. Think about Jerry and his friends. If their lives were perfect, well, there would be no show at all. So be grateful for your silly mistakes and idiotic moments, because they make you the super fun and interesting person that you are, and why would you change?
1 You Just Can't Even Sometimes
What's so awesome about Elaine and the gang is that they really prove that popular millennial saying. Sometimes you just can't even. Whether it's dealing with your parents who are being a bit annoying right now or talking to your crazy boss or breaking up with someone you've only been dating for a few months, there are a lot of times in your life that makes you want to crawl under your covers and never come out again. Elaine is pretty vocal about being annoyed about stuff, along with her good friends. It's great when Jerry is invited to a party and then loudly proclaims that he really doesn't feel like going, because hey, you do that sometimes. Okay, all the time. Okay, every single time you get a party invite. What can you say? You just can't even, and Jerry, George, and Elaine can't either.
