15 Reasons We Will Always Love 'The Hills'
The hills are alive… with nostalgia for a certain reality show featuring a group of twentysomethings finding love and themselves in L.A. Now that it's been a full decade since The Hills premiered on MTV - May 31st was the official ten year anniversary - we're pretty sure that nothing else will ever come close to the experience of watching this awesome show. It was hilarious when it wasn't supposed to be, crazy fun to watch, and it was also kind of relatable in its own way. You may have other great reality TV loves like The Real Housewives or The Real World (pretty much anything with “real” in the title) but The Hills will live on forever. It was special and you will never, ever get sick of it. Here are 15 reasons you will always love The Hills.
15 LC Is The Greatest
You want to be Lauren Conrad… or you want her to be your BFF. Or both, right? It was super fun watching Lauren's coming-of-age journey as she loved different guys, struggled with her best friend-turned-frenemy Heidi and found her purpose and dream career: fashion. She was the girl-next-door type of character on the show and the one that you definitely related the most to. Without Lauren, there literally would have been zero show since, of course, it was a spin-off of Laguna Beach.
14 It Was About A Friendship Break Up
Friendship break ups aren't really talked about as much as those in the romantic realm, but they totally should be in the spotlight 24/7. You have definitely broken up with a friend before, if not more than one. It's sad and tragic and it really, really sucks, but unfortunately it happens pretty often, especially as you get older/move into your 20s and start experiencing life and love and work. We had a front-row seat and watched as Lauren and Heidi's best friendship totally disintegrated.
13 It Was About Boys
What's a reality show (or any TV show, really) without some awesome eye candy? The Hills had that in spades from Brody, Justin Bobby, Spencer, and more. Seriously, it was like every single guy on this series had to be super good-looking. The guys made this show even more fun to watch since they often created a ton of the drama.
12 It Was Crazy
Remember when Heidi got tons of plastic surgery and looked completely unrecognizable? Or when Lauren turned down PARIS for a guy that she ended up breaking up with later anyway? Yeah, this show was pretty crazy at times, and you loved every single minute of it. You couldn't wait for the next episode and basically felt like an addict, always wanting and needing more.
11 It Was Real
Okay, okay, we know that this was a reality TV show which means that it wasn't 100 percent real. The stars had to go to certain locations and be with certain people and get into certain situations, all in the name of entertainment gold. But still, the show dealt with some real emotions and real circumstances, like breaking up with guys, fighting with friends, getting new roommates that you didn't exactly get along with, meeting a fellow intern at a fashion company, and navigating life in a big city. We all deal with that stuff, no matter who we are and no matter where we live.
10 It Was Really Funny
You definitely laughed a ton when watching this show, whether you were tuning in alone in your dorm room or hanging out with your girlfriends with some popcorn and ice cream. It's hard not to laugh when the stars have silly fights that don't really make a ton of sense or get annoyed with each other over literally nothing at all. You definitely don't act that way, but you loved seeing others behave like that.
9 It's A Cautionary Tale
You have to love a reality series that also teaches you something. It was really tragic watching Heidi go through her plastic surgery situation, but at the same time, her storyline served as some advice on what not to do and educated lots of people. The message? You should always love yourself exactly as you are and not try to be or look like someone that you're not.
8 It's Got Justin Bobby
Just the fact that this guy has two first names is absolutely amazing. His name is just really fun and he's a really fun character too. A lot of the girls seemed to have crushes on him and we don't know if that was ever true or not, but either way, he brought some serious entertainment to the series.
7 It's Got Kelly Cutrone
The fashion P.R. maven and owner of People's Revolution always told the truth on this show, and was perhaps the most real star of all. She didn't mince words as they say and she always told Lauren exactly what she thought. Kelly is super inspiring and loves to mentor young women who are finding their way into their careers. Seriously, you need to read her memoir If You Have To Cry, Go Outside if you haven't already.
6 It Intro'ed Whitney Port
Remember Whitney, who worked with Lauren at People's Rev? She got her own spin-off about working in fashion in NYC called (what else?) The City. Whitney is a super sweet, charming and stylish girl and it was awesome to have yet another fun reality show to become completely addicted to.
5 It Was Trend-Setting
This show seriously turned a corner for the world of reality TV and now there have been tons of fun shows about young women trying to make it in the fashion world. They're mostly set in New York and not L.A. like The Hills but you can see this show's influence each time a group of girls grab dinner or drinks… or fight at a birthday party.
4 It's Classic
Something that is classic is often timeless as well, and that can definitely be said of The Hills. It's fun and looks fresh each time you watch your fave episode, no matter how long it's been since it aired. Sure, the characters might not have the latest tech gadgets but the show still looks contemporary, and that's more than you say of a lot of other shows, reality or otherwise.
3 It Was (And Still Is) Popular
Sometimes you just have to give in and like what all the cool kids like. The Hills definitely falls into that category. It's popular and lots of people love it, so it must be for a reason, right?
2 There's An Amazing Kids Spoof
Have you seen the video of little kids re-enacting The Hills? You absolutely have to check it out. These brilliant children also spoofed Jersey Shore and The Real Housewives Of New Jersey and they do spot-on impressions of Heidi, Spencer, Brody, Justin Bobby, Lauren and more. They focus on the fact that most of the fights and drama on the show revolved around who was invited or not invited to a birthday or other event. It's unreal how good it is.
1 It Was Super Self-Aware
The ending of The Hills was just as dramatic as the rest of the show. It proved that it was a reality series, end of story, and that not all of it was real. When Brody walked away and revealed a set behind him with a camera crew and all that jazz, we were all pretty impressed and surprised that this show would choose to actually go there. That's why we love The Hills so much: it was self-aware. The producers and cast members knew that people were talking about whether or not it was real and how much of it was totally fabricated. The show left with an air of real mystery since we still don't know exactly what really went down or what was actually fact or fiction. But somehow that's okay. We have the episodes, and that's enough.
