15 Reasons You NEED A Second Season Of '13 Reasons Why'
Netflix's 13 Reasons Why is their most popular show in the social media world, and for good reason. The 13-episode series is dramatic, moving, sad, and beautifully crafted. You binged the episodes as fast as you could and avoided spoilers as much as you could. You did not want anything to ruin this TV watching experience. Since news broke that there are talks of a second season, you probably have not been able to stop wishing and hoping and dreaming that this will become a reality. You do not want to say goodbye to this story or the characters and there is just so much more that you could imagine happening on this show. There are so many reasons that you want more episodes. Here are 15 reasons you NEED a second season of 13 Reasons Why. Maybe if you cross your fingers and toes, this will happen!
15 You're Not Ready For It To Be Over
You're not, right? It's seriously upsetting to think that the first season would be all that you get from this amazing show. If you're a fan of Jay Asher's young adult novel, then you have been waiting for this adaptation for a long time (since it was originally going to be a movie starring Selena Gomez). If you hadn't read the book before checking out the Netflix show, you might have picked up a copy right after binge-watching, or maybe you're currently reading it now. Either way, you're a huge fan of this story and you want it to continue. You just can't imagine it being over. You have gotten really attached to the storyline and the characters and you want to see what happens to them. You're definitely curious and you would hate for the final episode to be the last time that you get to hang out with these people. Yes, you hang out with people through your TV. Totally normal.
14 The Author Is On Board
Jay Asher thinks that a second season would be a great idea and so you definitely want a second season based on that fact alone. It's always awesome when an author is cool with an adaptation of their work and feels really proud of the whole thing. That doesn't always happen and sometimes it seems like it rarely happens, since so many adaptations don't end up capturing the book's spirit. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jay Asher said, ""I'm curious as well. What happens to Clay? How do people react to what Alex did at the very end? What's going to happen to Mr. Porter? I'd thought of a sequel at some point. I'd brainstormed it, but decided I wasn't going to write it. So I'd love to see it." And now you really wish that he had written a sequel and you're super disappointed that it doesn't exist. Sorry about that.
13 There Are So Many Loose Ends
What's interesting about the end of the show -- and the final two episodes in particular -- is that it doesn't feel like things are over. Don't you agree? There are other season finales of other shows where you think that if the show ended up being cancelled, you would be okay with it. Well, you wouldn't be totally fine with it, since when you love a television show you never want to say goodbye to it. But you would be okay in a sense because you would agree that the characters were left in a good place and the ending was satisfying. It made sense and you could live with it. In the case of 13 Reasons Why, you have to say that the ending doesn't feel like an ending. Yes, the final scene with Clay and Skye and Tony in Tony's car is really beautiful and moving, but you still want more. You still need more. You still want to know what happens to all of the characters.
12 You Need More About The Court Case
When the first season ends, you don't know the outcome of the court case. You don't know if the judge will rule that the school is at fault or not. You don't know if Hannah Baker's parents will get what they want from this whole thing (or if it's even possible for them to be glad about the outcome since, of course, they lost their daughter in an incredibly tragic way). You need more about the court case and would like to keep following it. You definitely need a second season for that very reason. And you definitely think that the court case could continue in the second season, which would be another way to frame the narrative. It's interesting that this case wasn't wrapped up. You have to assume that the writers wanted to open things up for a second season, right? Otherwise, wouldn't there have been a conclusion?
11 You Need More Clay
Oh Clay. You love him. You really and truly do. It's impossible not to adore him, don't you think? He's sweet, he's adorable, and he's the main character (well, besides Hannah, of course). You need more of him so you definitely want more episodes. You're not finished learning about him and figuring out how he feels about this tragic situation. You have seen him grow up a lot in these 13 episodes and that makes this show a true coming-of-age story. You can only imagine how much more he would grow if you could watch him in 13 more episodes. You care about him a lot since you feel like you know him. Since you're probably quite a bit older than him, you probably think of him as a younger brother. You just want to give him a hug and tell him that it's all going to be okay (even if you don't know that it will be).
10 Bryce Needs To Get In Trouble
At the end of the 13 episodes, it becomes clear that Clay has told the truth about Bryce's physical assaults. He tells the high school administration and more than that, he has a recording of Bryce admitting to what he did. There's really nothing like a confession in this type of situation. It's super important since unfortunately, so many people refuse to believe victims and think that they're making it up, which is a seriously frustrating fact. You need to see Bryce get in trouble for what he did and get what he deserves, and so you definitely would like a second season of this show so you can watch him fall from grace. This feels so much more important since it's not just a fictional issue and this doesn't just happen on a Netflix show. There are so many real-life guys that you wish would get what they deserve.
9 Jessica Needs To Heal
If there's one character that you really feel for and would love to help, it would be Jessica. You get to know her over the series of 13 episodes and realize that she's truly hurting. She has been suppressing what happened to her the night of that summer party for so long, and when she finally admits to herself that she was attacked, she comes undone. You need a second season because you need to see Jessica heal. You really want her to work through this experience and you want her to feel better and realize that it's not her fault and that she can find a way to move on. You would hate to think of her hurting for the rest of her life and not being able to feel normal ever again. While you are realistic about this subject and know that it's not easy to recover from a tragedy like this, you do want to see her talk to a counselor and learn to heal.
8 Hannah Can Still Be In It
If you think that there shouldn't be a second season because it seems like Hannah Baker's story is over since Clay has finished listening to the tapes, consider this: Hannah could still be in more episodes. How? Flashbacks, of course, and memories. Clay is definitely not done thinking about Hannah and missing her and grieving her. He still has feelings for her since those things don't just magically and suddenly go away. His feelings are probably more complicated for obvious reasons, but they're still there. It's possible that all of Clay's memories about Hannah from the YA book have been done on the show, but that doesn't mean that the writers on the Netflix series couldn't come up with some new ideas. You're okay with that since Jay Asher is thrilled with the new content that was added to the show and has even said in interviews that the new stuff sounded like his own words and his own writing.
7 One Word: Jeff
You love Jeff. Of course you do. It would be totally impossible not to. There has been a bit of an outcry about the fact that Jeff tragically dies on this show. Sure, he wouldn't be able to be in the second season since he unfortunately isn't around anymore. But he could still exist in flashbacks, right? There must be more stories to tell about him. Even if he would just appear a few times in Clay's memories, that would be enough for you. You're not ready to say goodbye to Jeff and to give up the dream of seeing him again (you know, on this show). Oh Jeff. You really enjoyed all of the moments that you got to see him talking to Clay and just being the sweet dude that he is. You're interested in a second season based on the flashback possibilities alone. His story just can't be over. You're not ready to admit that.
6 There Could Be Flashbacks
Flashbacks can be amazing and teach you a lot about the characters' lives before the show started… or they can be the worst things ever. It really depends. Since there are a bunch of flashbacks on the first season of 13 Reasons Why that are done really well, you can be sure that if there was another season, the flashbacks would still be great. You would love to get the chance to curl up on the couch with some more episodes and to see some more flashbacks. They could focus on some of the other characters and their past lives, like Alex, Tyler, Justin, Jessica, Skye and Tony. You would be interested in seeing what it was like when Skye and Clay were best friends back in the day. You would also like to see Tony's childhood, Tyler's childhood, and what really happened between Alex and Jessica when they broke up.
5 You Don't Want Justin To Leave Town
One of the saddest things to happen at the end of the show? That would be when Justin is about to leave town because he can't live at home anymore. His mom is the worst and her latest love interest is seriously awful too. You don't want to leave and you don't want to think about what would happen to him if he did. You feel terribly about the way that things happened between him and Jessica. You can't believe that he knew what was going on between Jessica and Bryce and that he did nothing to stop it. You want him to come clean and apologize (but for real this time) and admit that he doesn't deserve to be with her anymore. You want to see him realize that he needs to shape up and change if he wants to become a better person. Of course, you don't believe that he and Jessica should get back together. That would be awful. You want him to understand what was wrong with what he did and you want him to stick around because if he just runs away, that doesn't help anyone, let alone himself.
4 You're Super Curious
Another reason you really want and need more episodes? You're super curious about what would happen. While you definitely have your ideas about what some characters could go through and what some of the major storylines would be, you also want to be surprised. You want things to happen that you had no idea would. You trust this show and the cast and crew so you know that every new episode would be just as amazing as the first season. There would definitely be no sophomore slump here. So mostly, you're just curious about what the writers would do with more episodes, and you want to sit back and be impressed yet again. It's possible that you went into this show not having read the book (at least not yet) and that you were honestly surprised by how much you enjoyed it and how well-crafted it was. It's no wonder that you want that experience to happen all over again.
3 You Want The High School To Make Some Changes
It's safe to say that this high school is one of the worst ever. Kids are bullied and hurting every day that they attend classes and it seems like no one is willing to help them or do anything at all. It's like it's just accepted that some kids are cool and popular and others are nerds and don't deserved anything good in the world. It's seriously messed up. What's even sadder is that this school looks like a whole lot that actually exist. It sucks that it's so realistic. You need and want a second season because you want the high school to make some changes. You want the teachers and administration to take some responsibility for the school's climate and culture, and you want them to admit that they have to help the students. It would be interesting to see this as part of a second season narrative, especially because it's such an important thing.
2 You Need To Know About Tyler
At the end of the show, it becomes clear that Tyler might be planning a school shooting. It's a terrifying thought but that's what the evidence seems to point to, right? He's got a bedroom full of weapons and he's got a sad look in his eyes that seems to suggest that he's thinking about something and planning. This would be an interesting storyline if there was a second season. You would want someone else to find out that he was thinking about this so they could stop him, of course. This high school has definitely been through enough and this would be yet another horrible tragedy. Maybe Clay would stop him and try to help him. You can definitely see him doing that. Since he has been through so much trying to work through Hannah's story, Clay would have the experience and would know when someone else is struggling and hurting.
1 You Need To Know What Happens To Alex
Since Alex is in the hospital at the end of the show thanks to a possible suicide attempt, lots of fans and critics are wondering if that would be the basis of a second season of 13 Reasons Why. It would definitely make sense, right? Since Alex is a big part of the first season (and since Miles Heizer portrays him in such a moving and powerful way), he would be an interesting main character for more episodes. You definitely want a second season because you need to know what happens to Alex. You love him and feel like you have really gotten to know him, and you would hate to see him suffer. You don't want him to take his own life because you know that there is so much more to live for. It would just be way too tragic. If this is the foundation for a second season, you are totally on board and you seriously can't wait.
