15 Rules You Didn't Know The Kardashian Family Has To Follow
Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, Kylie and Kendall - the famous Kardashian-Jenner girls, and their hardworking 'momager' Kris act like the rules don't apply to them. They became famous for being famous, have millions in the bank just… well for being famous, and have had a reality television career that has lasted well past the standard sell-by date.
They are always living life to the fullest - but just how carefree can they be? We all know that reality television holds a lot of secrets and Keeping Up With The Kardashians is no different. They have turned their own lives into a multi-million dollar business but that has not come without sacrifice.
Wendy Williams spoke openly about what she thought of Kris' parenting style revealing, "With Kris, I just find it very uncomfortable that she has her entire family on the line. But, you know, her choice is her choice." It is difficult to visualize where Kris does draw that line - as she jumps between parent and business manager - but both roles require her to be strict and basically lay down the law.
The following are strict rules you didn't know the family has to follow.
15 Caitlyn Was Never Allowed To Be "Herself" In The Family Home
Caitlyn, formerly Bruce Jenner, told AOL Makers, "The rules for Kris and I (were) don't dress up, certainly around the house. If you really feel the need to do that, when you're on the road take stuff and do that." She explained, "I'd go on the road for speaking engagements, take a bunch of stuff, dress up at the hotel, walk around, do whatever I wanted to do, just to feel a little bit better about myself. And I kind of dealt with it that way."
Kris always knew about her partner's desire towards changing gender as Caitlyn had been taking hormone tablets since the late 1980s. In 2015, the former Olympian made her full transition aged 65-years-old and made her first public appearance on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine.
14 Kim, Kendall and Kylie Never Get Tipsy In Public
There are three sisters in the family who do not get drunk in public - Kim, Kendall and Kylie, and it's no coincidence that they are also the most famous siblings. Their management teams know that if they were photographed falling out of nightclubs, or in a bar jumping on the furniture, then this can quickly end a showbiz career, as the media will turn them into a "car crash" spectacle like Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears.
Khloe revealed to Elle magazine that Kourtney no longer drinks as she is busy with her own children and so it's really just her and momager Kris who booze. She said, "I think that me and my mom are like, the most (heavy drinkers). My mom's every night. And me, it's like, I'm normally good, but when I'm ready I'm going to drink my vodka or shots. I'm going to drink."
13 Tapes Should Be Kept In A Locked Safe
Surprisingly, the Kardashian-Jenner gang are no longer interested in what initially made them famous - leaking a tape to the public. In 2003, the rights to Kim's infamous tape she made with then-boyfriend Ray J was sold for $5 million and Kim managed to turn an embarrassing situation into a showbiz career now worth more than $50 million.
Did it put her sisters off making tapes of their own? Nope. Both Khloe and Kylie (rumored) have tapes of their own - however these have to be kept in locked personal safes. Khloe revealed to Andy Cohen, "I've definitely recorded myself having sex with my ex husband. You remember those little video cameras, that was my jam for a moment," she then admitted to the host that the video was in a safe at her home.
12 Never Wear A Bikini In Bright Sunlight
One rule the gang set themselves is never to wear bikinis in bright sunlight - instead it's better to choose a day when it's slightly overcast. Kim revealed to Elle magazine, "It's a trick of the light. There are paparazzi everywhere, that's a fact, so if I go out in bright sunlight all my cellulite will be lit up and visible. If it's overcast, you can't see it. I know it's there, but you won't."
Kim also had another trick up her sleeve when she used a body double during a family holiday to Mexico last year. The paparazzi went crazy, taking hundreds of shots of Kim sunbathing by the side of a private pool - but the real Kim was already in the car and heading out with her two children for a nice relaxing day. Kim: 1. Paparazzi: 0.
11 Guests At Their Homes Must Sign A Non-Disclosure Form
The Kardashian-Jenners hold a lot of house parties - who could forget 'Kidchella' for North and Penelope's birthday where the entire garden was transformed into a mini-festival - which means a lot of people will be walking around their homes. One strict policy they have in place is that all guests must sign a non-disclosure form that protects the family's privacy - basically, don't sell stories to the press.
Kim revealed to Elle magazine that their father, lawyer Robert Kardashian, was a big influence on the importance of contracts. She revealed, "My dad was obsessed with documents and contracts. At Christmas, we would have 'gift' documents in our stockings with 'A One Hour Talk With Your Father About The Meaning Of Life' written on. At the time we'd all moan about it. He loved to talk big stuff with us. Now that I have lost my father, I'd give everything I have for one of those hours."
10 The Children Are Not Allowed To Called Kris "Grandma"
This rule is simple: don't ever call Kris "Grandma." She told People magazine, "They call me Lovey. At first I was Grandma, and all of a sudden I didn't like the way that sounded, my mom had a friend called Lovey and I thought that was the cutest name."
Kris announced late last year that she was thinking about developing a new reality show, Keeping Up With The Kids. The KUWTK spin-off would focus on the little lives of 7-year-old Mason, 4-year-old Penelope, and 2-year-old Reign, and their cousins 3-year-old North and 1-year-old Saint. Although Kris will have to get Kanye West on board, as he isn't the biggest fan of the show as Kim revealed during one episode, "(Kanye's) very private even though he's in the business, so he's really taught me how to become a little bit more private and I've taught him about how to be a little bit more open.”
9 They Must Never Leave The House Without MakeUp
When you are the most photographed family in the world - there is no such thing as an off day. The Kardashian-Jenner can never wear a natural look and they always have to leave the house looking immaculate. Kourtney revealed to Glamour magazine, "I have my five-minute makeup routine, which is I do tinted moisturizer, and then I do a quick concealer and I use our bronzer every day. And then I have to curl my lashes, and mascara and that's it."
Kim explained her time saving tip that celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tillbury taught her, so she can still look even when it's very early in the morning. She told The Cut, "She inspired me when I am really lazy and I can't do my make-up the next day, so I'll sleep in my make-up. I know that's probably the worst advice, but she has all the magic creams to put on the next day to make up for it."
8 Kim and Kanye Are Not Allowed Their Phones At Dinner
Kim had no idea her phone addiction was so bad until she started dating Kanye. He laid down the ground rule that there would 'no phones' at dinner so they could 'enjoy the moment.' According to Kim, her husband was not happy when she would spend the whole meal taking pictures telling Paper magazine, "We have rules at the table. If we are eating at a restaurant, we'll wait to do it (take pictures) when we are done eating." Kim added, "He's taught me to take a little time for myself and I've taught him stop a little more to take time and take pictures and stuff."
They even extended the rule to their own Italian wedding. Kim said, "During our wedding we asked that everyone - not for privacy reasons but just for everyone to live and enjoy the moment - to leave our phones and everyone called us afterwards and said it was the best thing they've ever done."
7 No Smiling Or Talking To The Paparazzi
One of the main forces behind the Kardashian brand is Kim's BFF Jonathan Cheban - he is responsible for a lot of things and mostly that's turning Kim herself into a star. When the media first started to pay attention to Kim, she would smile and answer questions from the paparazzi. On her website she confessed, "Every time I'd go to the gym or go eat, every paparazzi would ask me questions and I would be like: 'Hey guys!' Like, I so wanted the attention."
She then revealed, "Jonathan was like, 'This has got to stop. Do you think Victoria Beckham does all these interviews? Do you think everyone else has smiles on their faces? You are too happy, you are smiling way too much. Put your sunglasses on. You need a whole makeover and you need to stop talking and stop smiling." Now the whole family have dropped the smiles when it comes to the paparazzi.
6 Their Cell Phones Must Have Multi-Layered Security
In 2014, several celebrities had their phones hacked via Apple's iCloud and many of Kim's private pictures - including nudes - made their way online. Three years later, 36-year-old Ryan Collins from Pennsylvania confessed to the hack and will spend 18 months behind bars.
Since this incident, the Kardashian-Jenner gang has upped the security on their own phones - especially as their personal phonebooks hold the names of almost everyone famous in the world. Michael Kaiser, executive director of the National Cyber Security Alliance, told Billboard, "Step one is adding multiple layers of authentication to your accounts." He explained how they will likely use a biometric log-in such as a fingerswipe, and a retina scan in addition to having a very strong passcode, and of course - an eight digit pin number.
5 They Have To Protect Their Own Brand And Family Name
The Kardashians have spent the past decade building their own brand and have endorsed just about everything on the planet from makeup to public toilets. Their hard work paid off and the Kardashian brand is now worth more than $150 million. So naturally they are not going to take well to someone coming along and attaching themselves to their name. Nobody found this out quicker than Blac Chyna when she was received a court order from Kim, Khloe and Kourtney preventing her from changing her name.
Now Chyna is engaged to Rob Kardashian, when they marry she will become Angela (her real first name) Kardashian but the family's legal team have said she can't promote herself under this name. Chyna's lawyers argued in response, "It's actually her name, it's not a poaching." The case continues.
4 They Must Not Break Advertising Rules On Instagram
With millions of followers on their Instagram accounts, huge brands all around the world are willing to throw big money at the family for just one post. However, the Kardashian-Jenners have been caught out in the past for failing to make it obvious to their fans that they are advertising and endorsing products.
Truth in Advertising (TINA), a nonprofit organization said they were guilty of "false advertising and deceptive marketing." They were made to remove more than 100 posts between them that violated the rules set out by advertising authorities. The executive director of TINA said, "The Kardashian-Jenner family and the companies that have a commercial relationship with them have ignored this law for far too long, and it's time that they were held accountable." So from now on - they have to be very clear when something is a '#ad.'
3 No Soda Is Allowed In Kourtney's House (Not Even Diet)
When it comes to her own fridge, Kourtney is very strict on keeping junk food out of it and she won't allow soda in the house. On her sister Khloe's own website she wrote, "Kourt is such a health freak, (she) is so bossy, and she'll tell me what not to eat!"
Khloe then described a hilarious moment when she had to sneak soda into a coffee cup just so she could have a drink. She continued on the post, "Kourtney does not allow soda in her house. The other night I was craving a Diet Coke and I had to put the soda in a coffee cup. She was like, 'Who's drinking coffee so late?' I was just happy she couldn't tell the difference, LOL. Give me a break, Kourt! It's not like it's drugs - it's a soda!!! LOLs."
2 Kanye Has The Final Say On Everything
Surprisingly, it's Kanye who has the final say. Kris Jenner told Harper's Bazaar that she was having work done on her house and the driveway was paved with cobblestones imported from France. The whole project was delayed because Kanye wasn't happy with the color grout Kris had picked out so the whole thing had to be changed - she added, "And he was right."
Kanye also revealed that he wouldn't do a single episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians until the producers changed the shooting style. He told HOT 97 radio three years ago, "I don't really do (Kim's) show just because I don't particularly like the way the producers shoot some of the shots." Then the production team agreed to change the lighting and have less close-up angles so they could get Kanye on board. The new family motto might as well be, "In Kanye we trust."
1 Everyone Gets Paid
Kim's mobile app game: Kim Kardashian: Hollywood has made more than $100 million in revenue since it was first released nearly three years ago. Players of the game get to live a life like Kim and meet other characters such as members of her family - which Kourtney was less than pleased about.
According to Life & Style, Kourtney sent a cease and desist letter to Kim, via their own mother Kris, asking her sister to pay up, remove her character completely from the game or face a lawsuit. A source reported, "It was basically a big F-you to Kim. She didn't want to be included in the game without being paid!” They added, “(Kim) feels like she's the one who got them all famous anyway.” Just goes to show you how these ladies roll - money first, family second.
