15 Shocking Celeb Scandals Of 2017 (So Far)
Last year definitely had a ridiculous amount of celebrity scandals: T-Swift and her reignited feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, Ryan Lochte's ridiculous antics at the Olympics in Rio, the big Brangelina breakup, the Amber Heard and Johnny Depp breakup, and let's not forget the countless scandals brought forth by Beyonce's Lemonade along with "Becky with the good hair." It's hard to believe that 2017 could ever top the countless scandals of 2016. Of course, no year is without scandal and this year is turning out to be a real doozy. For some reason celebrities just never seem to stop getting mixed up in Twitter feuds, cultural appropriation, diss tracks, and saying dumb things on social media. Speaking of social media, Youtube, Twitter, and Snapchat have brought a lot of these scandals to light, however a few of them probably would not even have existed at all without the help of a few of these social media apps.
Kendall Jenner probably topped all of the scandals so far with her appearance in the now infamous Pepsi commercial. Remy Ma also made the list after she wrote a diss track in which she accused Nicki Minaj of getting booty implants along with some other truly scandalous remarks. From Louis Tomlinson to Tomi Lahren, these celebrities have been involved in more than their fair share of scandals in 2017. And the year is not even half over yet!
15 Fyre Festival
Fyre Fest was a destined to be a mess from the very beginning. However, the marketing for it was genius. Basically what happened was that Ja Rule and some rich guy named Billy McFarland spent millions of dollars on models, yachts, and private jets to promote a festival that would, in turn, help to promote his new talent-booking app called Fyre. Well, everyone knows the name Fyre now! Even though guests paid thousands of dollars for tickets to the festival, the event was poorly planned and when the guests began to arrive, they soon realized that there was little food, disaster relief tents instead of villas, no electricity, garbage everywhere--it was complete chaos. Also, all of the bands pulled out at the last minute once they had heard of the horror that awaited them on the island. The worst part? Ja Rule and McFarland weren't even there and now they are being sued for millions of dollars. Whoops.
14 The Oscars Mix-Up
The La La Land and Moonlight mixup is stuff of legend now but, at the time, it was pure chaos. We know now that the individuals who are to blame is the accounting firm Pricewaterhousecoopers which is responsible for handling the envelopes during the show. Basically, there are two people who each have a briefcase containing 24 envelopes each (48 total) and they go back and forth handing the winning envelope to the presenters. What happened was that one of the individuals handed the presenters, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, the card that had Emma Stone, La La Land written on it which is what they read. How did this happen? Well, the accounting firm is strictly forbidden to use their phones during the award show, however, one of the individuals posted a photo on Twitter of Emma Stone accepting her award so, it's fair to say that he was a little distracted. Definitely the biggest scandal in Oscar history and it will live forever in Academy Award infamy.
13 Karlie Kloss in the Vogue Diversity Issue
It has been a long, tedious year of white people playing Asian characters in movies and it's only May. Matt Damon starred in The Great Wall and Scarlet Johansson starred in Ghost in the Shell and both received heavy criticism for their roles. However, Vogue didn't seem to get the memo. They released their diversity issue (that's right, diversity) which featured Liu Wen as their first Asian woman to appear on the cover of Vogue US. Seriously the first?? However, the fact that it's taken decades to feature an Asian woman on the cover isn't all they were under fire for. They also featured a spread of blonde super model, Karlie Kloss, dressed as a Japanese geisha complete with long black hair, kimonos, and heavily powdered skin. And get this: the article was titled “Spirited Away.” Needless to say, it was problematic AF. Kloss and Vogue have since apologized for the spread but seriously, shouldn't they know better by now?
12 Kendall Jenner's Pepsi Commercial
Quite possibly the biggest scandal of 2017 so far was Kendall Jenner's tasteless Pepsi ad which featured her joining some sort of protest and defusing tensions by offering a police officer a can of Pepsi. There are many problems with this: first of all, Jenner has never appeared at any of the protests or marches that have been going on for the past few months so the idea of her showing up to one and fixing all of the problems, is absurd and offensive. Second of all, are they really using sensitive and political issues as a way to sell soda? Third of all, people are holding up signs that say “Love” and “Join the Conversation” so that they can attempt to seem trendy and woke. But we all know what happens when a giant corporation tries to seem trendy. It never works. All in all, the commercial was incredibly offensive and tasteless, it was pulled, and Pepsi apologized.
11 Bill O'Reilly is Fired
On April 19th, Bill O'Reilly announced that he would be cutting ties with Fox New. O'Reilly is the host of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor and it has come to light recently that he and Fox had paid five women to settle harassment claims over the years. At the beginning of April, The New York Times published an article revealing that $13 million had been given to five women in exchange that they not pursue litigation over the harassment. All five women were either working for O'Reilly or have appeared on The O'Reilly Factor. The Times reported that this sort of harassment had been going on for years and that the largest settlement was a payout of $9 million in 2004. These allegations are said to be “baseless” according to O'Reilly, however, five women put their careers on the line to complain about the harassment--and those are just the ones who did come forward. O'Reilly and Fox may have parted ways over these harassment allegations but he still was able to leave with $25 million in his pocket.
10 The Bachelor's Hit-and-Run
In April, The Bachelor and Dancing with the Stars alum Chris Soules was involved in a deadly car crash in Iowa. He rear-ended a tractor driven by 66-year-old Kenneth Mosher. The crash sent Soules and his pickup truck into a ditch on one side of the road and Mosher and his tractor into another ditch on the other side of the road. Soules called 911 but he fled the scene shortly after and was found several hours later. For that reason, a sobriety test could not be conducted so it is unclear whether or not Soules was intoxicated. However, there were alcohol containers found around his vehicle. Mosher was transported to the hospital but he did not survive. The reality TV star has been formally charged with a felony hit-and-run. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.
9 DaddyOFive Faces Prison Time
It's tough to say if Youtube stars really count as celebrities but it seems that you can be famous for almost anything nowadays--including tormenting your children, filming it, then posting the video online. This is essentially what happened to Mike Martin of the channel DaddyOfFive. One of the videos depicted Martin and his wife Heather screaming at his youngest child, Cody, after they had sprayed disappearing ink on the floor. The two yelled obscenities at the child before Martin told him, “It's just a prank, brah.” Most of the videos depicted the couple either yelling at the children or telling them that they were going to be adopted. Martin and his wife have now lost custody of two children featured in their prank videos. In this case, “prank” is just a nice word for abuse. The video of the couple apologizing for their actions has been viewed almost 2 million times but the apology seems disingenuous since the couple had previously called those who were opposed to the videos “haters” and that the criticism was upsetting the children. Sure.
8 Tomi Lahren is Fired
Tomi Lahren had built a substantial brand for herself during last year's election and had her own show Tomi on TheBlaze but everything went downhill for her when she appeared on The View and said that she was pro-choice. She said that she believes in limited government so it would be hypocritical for her to say that the government should also be in charge of what women can do with their bodies. She has been under fire for saying that the Black Lives Matter movement is “the new KKK” and also said, “Americans stand up and fight for faith, family, and freedom. Syrians run away.” Though many condemn Lahren for being conservative, pro-choice, a Trump supporter, and a feminist-hater, her brand is based on her controversial opinions. She has created a name for herself by always speaking her mind but it turns out that her viewers only appreciated her speaking her mind when it also aligned with their own views.
7 Louis Tomlinson Fights Paparazzi
A video has been circulating of One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson knocking a paparazzi to the ground at LAX but it's a little difficult to see exactly what is going down in the video. It appears that there was a paparazzi that was very close to Tomlinson's girlfriend (we don't know for sure but it is assumed to be Eleanor Calder) and he tries to push him away and the paparazzi moves out of frame and apparently falls to the ground. Tomlinson ran to his girlfriend who is surrounded by a crowd. Apparently a female onlooker was recording the girlfriend and the two women got into an altercation and Tomlinson gets into a scuffle with her as well. According to Tomlinson's team, it was the paparazzi who provoked him and caused the fight to break out. They say that Tomlinson was simply coming to his girlfriend's defense. However, Tomlinson was arrested for battery and locked at a nearby LAPD jail. Tomlinson will not be criminally charged.
6 Nick Cannon Leaves America's Got Talent
After being the longtime host of America's Got Talent, Nick Cannon announced that he is leaving the show. When he announced that he would be leaving, he revealed that he had been “threatened with termination” by executives at NBC because of some jokes that he made during his Showtime special, Stand Up, Don't Shoot. Though we don't know exactly which jokes he was referring to, it may have something to do with the joke he made about the show taking away his “real n- card” and also joked that if NBC fired him, he could always “sue them and create a whole new controversy: 'NBC hates black people.” Needless to say, the execs at NBC didn't find these jokes very funny. Cannon said that he no longer wanted to work for a corporation that tried to “silence and control an outspoken voice.” He went on to say that his morals are more important than the millions of dollars that they hold over his head.
5 Danny Masterson Accused of Assault
This year, three women have disclosed that they were physically assaulted by Danny Masterson. Though these instances of the assault happened in the early 2000s, it is now finally coming out that the That 70s Show is a real scumbag. Apparently, it was Leah Remini who encouraged at least one of the women to come forward with their stories. Masterson has called these allegations untrue and said that Remini is using the "false allegations appear to be motivated to boost" her anti-Scientology documentary series on A&E Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. One of the victims was Masterson's girlfriend for six years and she claimed he sodomized her in 2001 while she was sleeping. Remini is an ex-Scientologist and Masterson is a devout Scientologist and the Church of Scientology is very good at covering up scandals. They did, after all, keep these assaults under wraps for over a decade.
4 Remy Ma Drops Diss Track About Nicki Minaj
The long-time feud between Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj sparked again after she dropped the diss track “Shether” that uses the beat to Nas' “Ether.” The artwork of the diss track features a dismembered Barbie that looks very much like The Pinkprint rapper. Minaj seemed to have provoked Remy Ma after she attacked her in Gucci Mane's "Make Love”, saying that she brought knives to a gun fight. In Remy Ma's track, she responded with, “Talking 'bout bringing knives to a fight with guns / When the only shots you ever took was in your buns.” Ouch. Remy Ma definitely covers a lot of ground in the seven minute-long track, she calls Minaj fake several times, ridicules her for trying to be hood, and she also calls her out for paying for her brother's wedding even though he is a convicted pedophile. Needless to say, the track is as vicious as the artwork.
3 Farah Abraham Appropriates Indian Culture
Cultural appropriation alert! Teen Mom star Farah Abraham sparked major controversy after appearing at the MTV Movie & TV Awards dressed in a “Bollywood”-inspired pink lehenga, a lot of gold bangles and, as if her getup wasn't ridiculous enough, she wore a bindi on her forehead. She told TooFab that the dress made her feel, “freaking amazing, Bollywood, and sexy” and also that she wanted to “bring culture” to the award show. Bringing culture to the red carpet is a good thing but Abraham who is not Indian and not a Bollywood star isn't exactly the one to do it. Needless to say, the people of Twitter were quick to call her racist and culturally insensitive. There have already been countless celebs such as Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens who have gotten in trouble for appropriating Indian culture in the past that you'd think that Abraham would have learned from their mistakes.
2 Celebs Trash the Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Met Gala appeared pretty boring compared to Met Galas of the past but it appeared that the real party was happening in the bathroom after Kylie Jenner posted an epic bathroom selfie with Paris Jackson, Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, A$AP Rocky, and Brie Larson. However, the fact that selfies were banned by Anna Wintour in 2015 isn't the biggest scandal of the event. Dozens of celebs apparently flocked to the bathroom to smoke cigarettes which was shown in various Snapchats, including Rita Ora's which featured Dakota Johnson lighting up a cigarette with Armie Hammer vaping in the background. Smoking indoors has been illegal in Manhattan since 2003. Met donors and members are not happy with the disrespect shown by the celebs at the gala this year because the smoke could have brought damage to the artwork in the museum and left the place a total mess. It is possible that this may have been the last Met Gala ever.
1 Kendall Jenner on the Cover of Vogue India
Surprise! It's Kendall Jenner again! You would think that Jenner would want to keep a low profile since the scandalous Pepsi commercial but the controversy has not seemed to phase her as she picks up more and more modeling gigs including some rather controversial ones. Vogue India released its 10th anniversary Collector's Edition issue in May and they decided to celebrate with an internationally released issue with a white woman on the cover. Of course, the people of Twitter were outraged that Vogue India did not choose an Indian model to grace their international cover. Vogue India has since gone to their Instagram to try to shut down the controversy writing, “In the last 10 years, /react-text react-text: 318 Vogue /react-text react-text: 319 India has had only 12 international covers, including Kendall Jenner, in 2017. Therefore, statistically, 90 percent of our covers are Indian! And we are proud of that."
