15 Stars Who Married Nobodies
Many of us have dreamed of ending up with our favorite stars, only to have those dreams crushed by those who tell us that we're being unrealistic. After all, celebrities don't marry normal people like us, right? Wrong! As it turns out, several famous actors and musicians have ended up finding love with people outside of Hollywood, and many of them have actually lasted longer than many other couples can say, famous or not. Some of the following celebrities married regular civilians after things didn't work out with a fellow star, while others never got the chance to get close to another famous person, because their first love was just a regular old joe! One thing's for sure: most of the celebrities who married normal people have expressed that their favorite thing about their partner is the fact that they're normal. Take a look at these 15 couples whose famous and regular worlds merged into one!
15 Paul Rudd & Julie Yaeger
Paul Rudd has been on the scene since 1995 when he had his breakout role in Clueless. He's a pretty famous actor, having starred in major films and guest-starred on some of the biggest TV shows in history. But his wife Julie Yaeger isn't nearly as well-known! These two were married in 2003, which means they've been tied together for fourteen years-fourteen centuries in Hollywood time! They met in New York when Rudd had just moved there and barely knew anybody. He met Yaeger at his publicist's office, where she worked as a publicist herself. At the time Rudd was late for an audition, so Yaeger did a nice thing and offered to drop his bags off at a friend's apartment. A few days later he asked her out for lunch. The lesson here is that random acts of kindness can result in marriage to one of the funniest men in showbiz.
14 Vince Vaughn & Kyla Weber
Speaking of funny men in show business, Vince Vaughn is another famous actor who is married to a normal person. Kyla Weber is from Blackie, a rural town in Alberta, and used to work as a real estate agent. These two originally met at a wedding in 2008, exchanged email addresses and phone numbers, and were happily married by 2010. It wasn't just luck that brought Vaughn and Weber together, but networking. A movie producer friend of Vaughn's introduced them since Weber was best friends with his wife. The links made Vaughn apprehensive, but we bet he's grateful for them today! “Because she lived far away, at first I was nervous to date her because it's one of my best friends' wife's best friend from childhood… If it goes wrong, you're talking about awkward,” said Vaughn, on the TV show Live! with Regis and Kelly. Vaughn also said he loves the fact that she's a civilian.
13 Patrick Dempsey & Jillian Fink
This next story is a fantasy for hair stylists everywhere! Jillian Fink was working at her salon, Delux, in 1994 when she noticed a client had booked under the name “Patrick Dempsey”. Her first thought was that somebody was playing a joke on her, because you would if you saw a famous actor's name on your work schedule, right? But Patrick Dempsey did actually show up for a trim, and Fink recalled that at the time she was “happy because he was so cute.” Although there was obvious attraction there, the couple didn't get together right away. At the time they were both involved with other people, but they did maintain their hairdresser-client relationship for three years. They did eventually get together, and by July 1999, they had tied the knot. Next time you're hesitant to go to work, just remember that you never know who's going to walk through the door!
12 Anne Hathaway & Adam Shulman
Anne Hathaway's husband Adam Shulman is an actor too, but if we're being totally honest, he hasn't found the same level of success as she has. Not that he should feel badly about that-it would be hard to rise to the same status as the girl who played Mia Thermopolis! The two met in 2008 at the Palm Springs Film Festival, and according to Hathaway, it definitely was love at first sight. Of their first meeting, Anne has said, “I knew from the second I met him that he was the love of my life.” She reportedly told her friend that she knew she was going to marry him, and she knew that he found her “a little nuts”. Aside from being an actor, Shulman is also something of a jewelry designer and even has his own line known as James Banks. When he proposed to Hathaway in 2011, he helped design the ring. Swoon!
11 Zoe Saldana & Marco Perego
Zoe Saldana and Marco Perego are one of the hottest couples out there, and you wouldn't think from looking at them that they're actually from different worlds. While Saldana is a well-known actress, famous for roles in movies like Center Stage, Crossroads, and Avatar, Perego is an artist. We guess they both have an understanding of expression and creativity, even if one is used to paparazzi and one is not! It's clear that the love between these two is enough to override any differences, and is adequately symbolized with the tattoo of Saldana's face which is imprinted on Perego's arm. Saldana has said in the past that her ideal man would be something of a pirate, and funnily enough, her husband is nicknamed “Pirate Perego” thanks to his long, Johnny Depp-ish hair and rugged features. This is definitely a match made in Tinseltown heaven! The two are also the proud parents of twins Cy and Bowie.
10 Matt Damon & Luciana Barroso
Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso are the ultimate example of why you should always suck it up and join your buddies on a night out, even if you'd rather veg on the couch. Damon was in Miami filming Stuck on You when he was invited by some crew members to get a drink at a bar called Crobar. He has said that they “dragged” him to the bar since he really didn't feel like going in the first place. But he's thankful he did, because he laid eyes on Barroso who was bartending, and his life changed forever. “I literally saw her across a crowded room and eight years and four kids later, that's my life,” he said. “I don't know how else our paths would have crossed if that didn't happen.” Interestingly, Damon has also said that he loves how she's a regular person, even labeling himself as “lucky” to fall “in love with a civilian.”
9 Jon Bon Jovi & Dorothea Hurley
Jon Bon Jovi is one of the biggest rock stars in the world, and all that fame still isn't enough to steal him away from his high school sweetheart. Bon Jovi met Dorothea Hurley in high school, and the two eloped in Las Vegas in 1989. They're currently two years shy of their thirtieth anniversary, so we definitely think these two should teach a class on how to make marriage work. Making it last that long is tough, even when one of you isn't an international rock star with world tours to go on and other superstars crossing your path. Jon told People that he owes their marriage's success to his wife. "She's the glue… I'm the crazy visionary with all kinds of things flying, and the seams are all splitting. She's the one following me… keeping it all together.” The couple has one daughter, named Stephanie, and three sons named Jesse, Jacob, and Romeo.
8 Reese Witherspoon & Jim Toth
We normally don't condone women waiting around for men to come and save them from scary situations, but that's exactly what happened when superstar actress Reese Witherspoon met her talent agent husband Jim Toth. The two were at a friend's party when Witherspoon was getting hit on by a drunk party guest. He was slurring and getting into her personal space when Toth walked over and broke it up. Witherspoon recalled the incident in a 2012 interview. “Jim came over and said, 'Please excuse my friend. He's just broken up with someone.'” Following their meeting, the pair hit it off, and by the next year, were legally bound. Although Toth isn't as famous as Witherspoon, doesn't mean he isn't as successful in his own field! He is an agent at the Creative Arts Agency, based in Los Angeles, and represents some of the biggest stars in the industry. What a catch!
7 Meryl Streep & Don Gummer
Meryl Streep is one of the most famous actresses ever, and although her husband Don Gummer is an extremely successful artist, many people wouldn't recognize him if they passed him on the street! These two have been married since 1978, and are still going strong. They met earlier in the year in which they married when Gummer was friends with Streep's brother and allowed her to stay at his apartment. Normally, weddings that take place within a year of the couple meeting don't end up being so stable, especially for those in the entertainment industry! But this relationship clearly demonstrates that sometimes, it isn't about how long you've known someone; it's about the bond you share. Streep and Gummer are also a great example of how success at work doesn't mean that your relationship has to suffer. We're not sure exactly how these two make it work, but they're doing something right!
6 Julia Roberts & Danny Moder
You'd be hard-pressed to find a person in the English-speaking world who didn't know who Julia Roberts was. Even if you don't care much for pop culture, you can identify the woman who rocked thigh-high boots down Hollywood Boulevard better than anyone can ever hope of doing! Roberts' husband Danny Moder, on the other hand, is significantly less recognizable. These two met at work when he was a cameraman and she was filming The Mexican. There was instant attraction, although at the time both were involved with other people. Moder was married, while Roberts was in a serious relationship with fellow actor Benjamin Bratt. The bond between Roberts and Moder was undeniable, though, and they eventually got out of their respective relationships and got together. They were married in 2002, and as far as we know, are still going strong. There have been rumors about them splitting up, but that's Hollywood for you!
5 Lisa Kudrow & Michel Stern
Lisa Kudrow played Phoebe Buffay on Friends, and will therefore always be one of the most recognizable actresses of all time. Her hubby Michel Stern is slightly less recognizable, as advertising executives tend to be! Even though Stern doesn't appear publicly half as much as his wife, the two have actually been married since 1995. Kudrow's pregnancy with their son was actually written into the Friends script! It's been over twenty years, but their relationship is still as strong as it was in the '90s, and Kudrow said in a 2014 interview that it all comes down to commitment. We're committed to our marriage working," she said. "It turns out after you have a history, there's such a bond, and love takes another shape." She's also revealed that she had a crush on him the moment she met him, but he was actually dating one of her friends. You really never know what can happen!
4 Scarlett Johansson & Romain Dauriac
Actress Scarlett Johansson tried marrying another celebrity, but it didn't work out. But when she got hitched to the hunky Romain Dauriac in 2014, she learned how beneficial it can be to be in love with someone who's in a different career field to her. Reports indicated that after two years of marriage, Johansson and Dauriac, who share daughter Rose Dorothy, split up in January 2017. The internet was flooded with reports that Johansson filed for divorce in March, however, the two united for a photo in early April at the reception of the Singular Object Art Opening in New York City. Both parents are notoriously private about their relationship and their daughter, so we as outsiders don't really know whether a reunion could possibly be in the cards. All we can be sure of is that love does blossom between celebrities and regular people, and like every other relationship, it can either thrive or die.
3 David Schwimmer & Zoe Buckman
Boy, those Friends stars sure do like falling in love with civilians! David Schwimmer, who played Ross on the sitcom, actually married a relatively unknown photographer and artist named Zoe Buckman in 2010. The two met when Buckman was working as a waitress in London, and she happened to serve Schwimmer. This really is like a fairytale brought to life, especially for Friends fans. Imagine just casually going to work and leaving with a date with one of the most famous faces on the planet! The two had a very private wedding ceremony, that didn't even make the papers until months later. They welcomed their daughter Cleo in May of 2011, who is the first and only child for both parents. At the moment, the couple is taking some time apart to determine the future of their relationship, but whatever happens, it's clear that they do love each other and their daughter.
2 Prince William & Kate Middleton
Speaking of fairytales! When you look at the Duchess of Cambridge now, it's hard to realize that she was once a mere commoner. Although she comes from a very wealthy family and is no stranger to the finer things in life, the Duchess has no royalty in her bloodline. Kate Middleton met Prince William when they were both residing in the same hall at St. Andrew's University in Scotland. They were both majoring in art history, and the Duchess has recalled that she initially felt very shy when she first met the Prince. The couple started dating in 2003, but it wasn't until eight years later in 2011 that they tied the knot (in a huge, glamorous, and very public ceremony, may we add!). They split up during that time, but we are glad that they reunited because we couldn't think of a better Duchess of Cambridge than Kate Middleton!
1 George & Amal Clooney
Our top celebrity who married a normal person is someone who was, for a long time, the world's most eligible bachelor. George Clooney is the dream man for women and men the world over and was never in a rush to settle down. When he finally married Amal Alamuddin in 2014, hearts broke everywhere. Although these nuptials took Clooney off the market, we think that they're actually a cause for celebration! They go to show that fame is not a requirement if you want to end up with the most desirable man in existence. Having said that, there seem to be a few other requirements: Amal may not have been famous before, but being a human rights barrister, she is exceptionally intelligent, strong, persistent, successful, and kind-hearted. Not to mention the fact that she is beautiful! The point is to always work on you because you never know when a superstar is going to cross your path.
