15 Things To Expect From The 'Gilmore Girls' Revival
The big day is finally almost here. It's almost November 25 and that means that all four 90 minute episodes of the Gilmore Girls revival will be available to stream on Netflix. It's almost too good to be true for us huge fans. We never, ever expected that we would be blessed with these new episodes, and now that they're almost here, it's pretty hard to believe. We get to see our favorite characters together, we get to obsess over who Rory is dating or not dating, and we hopefully get to witness Luke and Lorelai finally tying the knot (please let this happen). While we're definitely going to binge the new episodes as fast as possible in order to avoid spoilers, we definitely can't wait to talk to all our friends about the new character developments and plot twists. We don't even need Christmas this year. This is enough of a present.
Here are 15 things to expect from the Gilmore Girls revival.
15 Big Changes
We never saw Emily Gilmore wearing anything but a fancy suit or something similar. She definitely never wore jeans or anything that could even remotely be considered casual. Well, that is all going to change. According to the revival trailer, Emily is wearing -- wait for it -- jeans. Yup. That is getting everyone totally worked up since no one would have ever expected her to wear jeans. Besides that, there are a ton of big changes in store for us Gilmore fans. Rory is suddenly at a loss for what to do with her life, which is huge since we never thought that would happen to her. Besides that unfortunate boat stealing incident, we always thought that Rory had her stuff together. She was always super organized. And, of course, there is the biggest change of all: poor Richard is no longer with us. Yup, we are crying already.
14 That Thing Called Time
We can't stop time from marching on and we can't stop getting older, no matter how much we might want to. That is definitely something that we can expect in the revival. Since the episodes are set in real time, that means that eight years have passed since the series finale, since that's the amount of time that has actually passed. We can expect time to rear its sometimes ugly and sometimes tragic head in these episodes. Everyone looks older, from Rory to Lorelai to Emily and the townspeople, and while of course, that's okay since everyone does age, it's still a bit emotional to see our beloved characters growing up and literally dealing with death. We can expect to shed more than a few tears over the fact that Richard is now gone. Ugh, time. It can honestly be the worst sometimes, in both real life and on television.
13 Familiar Faces
Thankfully, we can't think of a single Gilmore Girls character who will not be back for the Netflix revival. If we were not going to see Lane and Kirk and all those familiar faces again, we would be really depressed about it. It would honestly ruin the whole thing, we have to admit, and we just would have a hard time with it. So we are thankful that we get to see everyone again because we missed everyone, from Rory to Lorelai to Emily to Luke to our fave townspeople. They are what make the show worth watching, Stars Hollow worth living in, and the revival worth getting excited about. Just thinking about all the personality quirks and jokes and funny antics is enough to get us crazy psyched for the revival. It's okay. November 25th is right around the corner and it will be here before we know it.
12 Rory's Boyfriends
Ah, Rory's boyfriends. What would we do without them? Sure, we love Rory and Lorelai and their fun and fast-talking friendship is what makes the entire show. It's the whole point, after all. But Rory's adorable and glorious boyfriends Dean, Jess and Logan are also what make Gilmore Girls what it is. The new episodes wouldn't seem totally complete without them, so we're glad that all three of them are going to appear in the revival. We're not sure how much screen time they will get since things have been pretty hush-hush, but we're going to say that whatever it is, it's going to be enough and we're going to accept ti. Okay, that's not totally true. We might whine a lot if Jess isn't in a good chunk of the four episodes. But we're going to try to be mature about this. The key word here is "try." That's really all we can promise.
11 Two Words: Melissa McCarthy
We had no idea if Melissa McCarthy was going to be a part of the Netflix revival. There were some super weird rumors there for a while about her being too busy or her team saying no without her having any clue. We didn't know what to say or think or feel because it just didn't sound like her. Besides, how could Sookie not be a part of a Gilmore Girls revival?! It just doesn't make any sense. Thankfully, we're going to get to see Sookie and they won't have to come up with any silly plot points for why she couldn't be in town. We're super happy about this because we really wanted everything to be perfect about these new episodes, and things are looking good on that note. We do really think that the new episodes will be amazing now that Sookie will be there, and that's just what we're going to believe.
10 Surprises
The cast and crew have been teasing big surprises, and those apparently involve Rory and her boyfriends. So while we can definitely expect to see Dean, Jess, and Logan in these episodes, we can also expect to be shocked by what we see. We're totally here for it and we couldn't possibly be any more ready. It's pretty cool that although we have some idea of what's in store, we still have no idea what's going to happen in these four movie-length episodes. As long as we can ensure that our viewing experience remains a total spoiler-free zone, then we can definitely say that there will be tons and tons of surprises. That does mean that when we wake up on Friday, we pretty much have to lock our cell phones in a drawer and not go online until we've finished all the episodes. Yeah, that also means that social media -- and Facebook and Twitter in particular -- are pretty much off-limits. But it's okay. We can do it.
9 Our Fave Mom And Daughter Antics
We have a feeling that when it comes to Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, they are going to be right back where we left them: getting up to all kinds of fun antics and activities. We love watching them banter, bicker (in a totally fun and adorable way), choose what junk food to eat, guzzle coffee like it's going out of style, window shop, go to Luke's, do movie nights… The list goes on and on. We can't wait to see our fave mom and daughter get up to their usual trouble, and we really can't even believe that we get the chance to see them again. Sure, there are going to be differences -- Rory has been away for a long time, after all, and she definitely didn't move back home to Stars Hollow after graduating from Yale. But the fact that she has gotten older and time has passed? That's only going to make these new episodes feel even more special.
8 Political References
Okay, so we know that when it comes to Gilmore Girls, we can expect a lot of pop culture references. Rory and Lorelai (and even Emily sometimes) seem to have an encyclopedic knowledge of American popular culture and most of the time, we honestly have no idea what they are talking about. That was part of the fun of the old series, though. We loved hearing about new movies and bands and singers and authors that we just had to check out. After all, if Lorelai and Rory loved them, we knew that we probably would, too. But apparently, we can expect some super relevant political references in the new episodes… and those are going to be focused on Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Oh boy, we cannot wait for this! Which makes sense, since it is kind of impossible to ignore the election that just happened and all of the political discourse surrounding it.
7 Luke Being Luke
Netflix recently released a second trailer (as if we didn't watch the first trailer enough times -- as in a billion times. Oops… ) and it has even more glorious scenes and funny lines, including one with Luke. OMG are we excited for this. We don't even have words. We love Luke. We have always loved Luke. We think he is the perfect one for Lorelai. Sure, she had some cute chemistry with Christopher, and yeah, he's Rory's dad and for a hot minute, we thought it would be great if her parents were back together once again. It's always nice when a family can be a happy family once again. But Luke stole our hearts from the moment we saw him lecturing Rory and Lorelai about not eating enough vegetables and drinking way too much coffee. He's just got this amazing grumpy personality but he's got a heart of gold underneath all that plaid and those baseball caps. We can't wait to see him again.
6 Coffee Coffee Coffee
We can't separate our love of Gilmore Girls from our love of coffee, right? In some cases, this show and Lorelai and Rory's love of a hot cup of joe may even have influenced us to love the stuff in the first place. Hey, we were young and impressionable, what can we say? In the second revival trailer, there's a hilarious scene in Lorelai's kitchen where she says, "Everything in my life has something to do with coffee. I believe in a former life I was coffee" and Luke says, "I cannot believe the conversations I have in this room." We are going to be laughing forever about that quote and probably even repeating it all the time. We're right there with you, Lorelai Gilmore, and we totally think that we were coffee in a former life as well. We even think that we are coffee in this life, so there's that. Now we need to grab another cup of caffeinated glory and watch both revival trailers again.
5 A Lost Feeling
In each of the two trailers that have been released recently, Lorelai and Rory have both said in separate scenes that they are feeling pretty lost these days. For Rory, it's because she's pretty much been living out of a suitcase, traveling around. We're not sure exactly why -- we think it's probably because she's made her journalist dreams come true, but she's not living the dream the way that she thought she would. For Lorelai, well, we have no idea why. She claims that she and Luke are happy and we really, really want to believe that's true. We're not sure we can handle seeing them break up again because hey, we're holding out for a wedding, and that's just what absolutely needs to happen in one of these four movie-length episodes. We would love to know why Lorelai is feeling so lost because we think she's just the best and we never, ever want to see her cry again. The few times that we did in the original series were more than enough.
4 More Emotion
It's safe to say that yes, the original seven seasons of this show did have some pretty major emotions. Rory grew up before our very eyes. She got dumped. She got her heart broken and probably even broke her own heart in the process, too. Her mom went through the same stuff, of course, in terms of all things love and romance and dating. But while Rory was trying to come of age and become a grown-up, Lorelai was doing the exact same thing, since she gave birth to a baby at the young age of sixteen and had to grow up super fast… but still acted like a kid sometimes (okay, most of the time). So what can we expect from the new episodes? That would be tons and tons of emotions. Lauren Graham has said, "There's still a lot of jokes and light moments, but this time it has a greater depth. There's death and sadness and more love and emotion. I cried the whole way through the entire script. I thought it was just beautiful and fitting and what I wanted it to be and hoped for.” Sounds amazing, right?!
3 Perfection
Okay, okay, so we totally know that nothing in life is perfect. None of us are, either. To expect perfection is to ask to be totally and completely devastated in the end -- or at least a little bit disappointed. But the reason why we think that the Gilmore Girls Netflix revival is going to be pretty perfect is because Lauren Graham (aka Lorelai Gilmore herself, aka our dream mom/favorite TV character) has basically said that the episodes are perfect. She has said in several interviews that it was "what I wanted it to be" or "It's everything I wanted it to be." Well, now that we know that, we are going to have crazy high expectations for these new episodes… except we don't think it's all that crazy. We know that sometimes, we build things up so much in our minds, whether birthdays or holidays or first dates or movies or TV shows. We say this thing is going to be so incredible and then we get all bent out of shape when it's not perfect. But we have a feeling this is going to be everything that we want… and maybe even more.
2 Tons Of Tears
We're not going to lie. We're all friends here, right? We pretty much started crying the second the news broke that there was going to be a Gilmore Girls Netflix revival. So we can say with 100 percent confidence that yes, there will be tons of tears when streaming this beautiful and glorious show. There's just no way that this isn't going to happen. Any fan that claims they won't cry even a single tear is a big liar. We can definitely expect tears -- and a lot of them. Not a few tears. Not a short burst of crying. A full-on, crazy sobbing session. Yup, that is what is in our future on Friday, November 25th… along with lots of cups of coffee and junk food. Because really, how else are we going to watch the new episodes? It's only fair to honor Lorelai and Rory with their fave beverage and their fave foods.
1 Nostalgia
The number one thing we can expect from the Netflix Gilmore Girls revival? That would be nostalgia… and lots and lots of it. It's pretty much going to be impossible for this not to be one big exercise in nostalgia. But unlike other reunions which seem to parade our favorite characters on screen in order to prove that, yes, they really did get everyone back, we just feel that this will be different. This nostalgia will be beautiful and pure and meaningful. It's Gilmore Girls, after all. We would never expect anything less. We're ready for it because this is what us fans have been waiting for. We want to get sad and happy and remember the good old days when this amazing show was on The WB. You know, back in a super innocent time when streaming services weren't even around. But now we're so happy that we not only get to live in this amazing time of Netflix, but we get new GG episodes as well. Seems like a total win-win.
