2017 is finally here, so let's ditch the trends from last year for something new! There were some pretty awesome trends in 2016, from matte lipstick to the magic of contouring and choker necklaces. However, some trends were more controversial like the man bun, and lots of us yearned for a return to natural eyebrows. Whatever you thought of the trends, they are over now - and new trends are ready to take their place. If you want to know what's going to be hot in 2017, you're in the right place! We've scoured the latest fashion shows, social media pages, and Pinterest to find the biggest trends for this year. From the latest nail craze to the beauty product that is guaranteed to make your skin glow, here are 15 of the hottest beauty, lifestyle, and fashion trends for 2017. Check out the trends to see which ones will be your new faves for this brand new year.
15 Chrome Nails
Last year was mostly all about matte beauty products. Kylie Jenner's matte lipsticks were a huge success and we all had at least one matte shade in our makeup bag. However, as the year drew to a close, sparkle and shine started to become popular again. Shimmering bronzers and glittering highlighters became two of the must-have beauty products for winter 2016, and now the trend has spread to nails. Pinterest and Instagram are filled with pictures of beautiful, chrome manicures and pedicures, and celebrities such as Gigi Hadid have been seen wearing chrome nails to big fashion events. Popular colors include silver, rose gold, gold, blue, and pink. Another great option is holographic nails, which reflect the rainbow when they catch the light. Chrome nails are set to be a big trend this year; after all, who doesn't love some shimmer in their life? It's one of the easiest ways to feel like a princess… well, without actually marrying into the royal family!
14 Braided Buns
A messy up-do has been a popular hairstyle for years. It looks great but it only takes a few minutes to style, so it is perfect for lazy days (or most days). However, the messy bun has been upgraded for 2017. The catwalks at New York Fashion Week were filled with braided buns, and the styles were varied; sometimes the braid surrounded the bun, but in other shows, the braid covered the top of the head. This fresh, feminine style has totally refreshed the classic bun style, and the braided bun is set to be seen everywhere in 2017. If you want to try the look, here's how: Brush your hair and fluff it with your hands. Decide which part of your hair you want to braid (you can do the sides of your head or the nape of your neck), and clip some hair to the side. Tie the rest of your hair in a quick bun (this isn't the final bun). Unclip the first section and braid it towards the bun and clip the braid to the side. Tie your hair in a messy bun and hold with hairspray. Tie your braid to your bun with a second hair tie. Finish with some hairspray.
13 Charcoal
Charcoal has become very popular in recent years. It used to be mostly found in fancy food like ice cream, inky cocktails, black salad dressings, and black burger buns. The trend was definitely hipster, and while it looked cool, the charcoal didn't necessarily improve the food. Now charcoal is back for 2017… but this time you can find it in beauty products. Activated charcoal, which is a natural ingredient, can be found in toothbrushes and toothpaste. It is even becoming popular as a teeth whitening product after hundreds of models and social media stars uploaded videos of themselves with black teeth to Instagram. You may not like the idea of brushing your teeth with charcoal, but thankfully you can find the magic ingredient in lots of other beauty products. New cleansers, face masks, exfoliators, and scrubs often contain charcoal, and it is great for your skin since it mops up oil, shrinks pores, and extracts toxins from your skin.
12 Meal Subscriptions
If you want to eat healthy but you do not have the time to cook for yourself, meal prep subscriptions may be your favorite 2017 trend! Several companies are providing meal services and some send ingredients to your home every week so you can make the dinners at home while other meal prep companies provide three fully cooked meals per day for their customers (what a dream). You can even choose your own meals using interactive weekly menus. There are gluten-free options, vegetarian options, vegan options, and paleo meals, so there is at least one service that can cater to everyone's needs. Meal prep services are set to be a huge trend in 2017. More and more people care about eating healthy, delicious food, but they struggle to find the time or motivation to buy healthy food to cook for themselves. Also, the meals themselves are seriously Instagramable! We are obsessed with this one.
11 Bralettes
Bralettes were a big trend back in 2015 and they have been updated for 2017 with a hotter look. The New York Fashion Week catwalks were filled with bralettes: Prada featured bralettes over buttoned-up shirts, Miu Miu featured Fifties bikini tops worn over dresses, Alexander Wang featured wrap-around bralettes, and Alexander McQueen featured studded leather bralettes. While bralettes will never become casual office wear, they are perfect for dates and nights out with your friends. There are lots of different ways to style this trend, but one of the most popular options is with a leather (or faux leather) harness. This gives the look a badass edge that is miles apart from the cute 2015 bralette trend. If you want to wear this look but you're not sure how to do it, try pairing a bralette with some high waisted jeans and a blazer. Leather trousers are also a great look!
10 Airport Style
Celebrity airport style has always been a fascinating subject. After all, celebrities show up to the airport in style, and they are just as glam as they are on the red carpet! For years, women have looked at Miranda Kerr and Kim Kardashian's airport outfits and used the images to inspire their own day-to-day fashion. Social media has totally changed the trend. Now people are just as interested in the airport fashion choices of normal women and Instagram, in particular, is filled with trending pictures of women's airport outfits, and Pinterest has reported an increase of 1600% of people documenting their airport style. If you want to keep up with this trend in 2017, the days of comfy clothes for flights are over. It's time to replace your old, slobbish tracksuit bottoms with some on-fleek leggings, sunglasses, and contour. It may seem like a strange trend, but you will be surprised by the amount of people who are actually interested in your airport fashion.
9 80s Fashion
If you miss the big hair and colored eyeliner of the eighties, you will be happy to hear that 80s fashion will be a big trend in 2017! Think big shoulders, puffball looks, and lots of velvet - so perfect for anyone who loves a dramatic look. Sure, this look has come and gone, but this year the catwalks at New York Fashion Week were filled with classic 80s looks: Balenciaga used whalebone rods in the shoulders of jackets and coats to recreate eighties power shoulders, Saint Laurent featured velvet devoré draped and sweetheart neckline mini dresses, Gucci's runway looks were reminiscent of Princess Diana, and Isabel Marant featured big puffball sleeves. If you want to try some 80s clothes this year, consider investing in a blazer with statement shoulder pads… and if you really want to make sure that you look super eighties, get a velvet blazer. This is definitely on the wilder side.
8 Healthier Snacks
Clean eating was one of the biggest trends in 2016. Rice cakes became cool again, and avocados became the must have (and the most photographed!) food of the year. Now the trend has been updated for 2017, and this year, health experts (and clean eaters of Instagram) are focused on healthy snacks. That's right, healthy snacks are officially cooler than chips and chocolate. Popular healthy snacks include frozen seaweed snacks, cheesy pretzels, salted tempeh, herbal falafel chips, and seasoned jicama bites. These snacks are all inspired by snacks that are popular in non-western cultures across the world, and most of them are just as delicious as traditional potato chips. In fact, some are even better! If you want to curb your snacking you should try this trend in 2017. You can buy healthy snacks in nearly every grocery store now, and you can even look online to find recipes so that you can make your own at home.
7 Kitten Heels
Kitten heels are supposed to be a big trend in 2017, but this may be the most controversial trend on the list. Kitten heels were seen everywhere during New York Fashion Week: Prada featured classic black sling backs, Chanel featured two-toned reissues, and Céline featured dainty pointed pumps. However, kitten heels have received a lot of flack in the last decade. Many people think that they are simply too ugly to wear due to the low heels, and they are constantly referred to as an out-dated style by fashion bloggers across the world. Despite this, the popular new trend is already sweeping across the United States. Instagram is filled with pictures of fashion-forward women in kitten heels, and lots of celebrities have been spotted out and about in a pair of kitten heels. If you're on the fence about this trend, think about the benefits of kitten heels. They are fashionable, cute, and feminine… and they don't hurt your feet as much as skyscraper heels!
6 Indoor Gardens
There are lots of benefits to spending time in a garden. Studies have found that nature helps to reduce stress while promoting relaxation, and nature has even been used as a form of treatment for depression. Sadly most people in today's society can't afford to live in a home with a garden. Because of this, indoor gardens have become one of the biggest trends in 2017. Anyone can install an indoor garden in their home, and it is a great way to add greenery, light, and beauty to your home. It will also make your home smell wonderful! Lots of companies sell indoor vertical gardens online, but you can also easily make your own. However, one benefit of buying an indoor garden online is that you don't have to worry about looking after your garden. Some indoor gardens come with timers that make sure that the plants are fed and watered every day.
5 Deconstructed Shirts
Oversized shirts are a classic, timeless look, but the new deconstructed shirt trend is quickly becoming even more popular. This 2017 trend started at New York Fashion Week. Marques'Almeida featured one-shouldered shirts, Victoria Beckham featured cut-out shirts with a sexy edge, Jacquemus featured oversized shirts with eccentric cuts, and Alexander Wang featured unique, chopped up shirts with extra collars, sleeves, and cuffs. If you want to invest in the deconstructed shirts trend, consider buying a striped shirt. Lots of the New York Fashion Week looks included stripes, and this makes the deconstructed shirt look more casual so that it is perfect for every day looks. The different deconstructed styles mean that there is something for everyone. If you love your arms, invest in a shirt with cut out holes on the arms, and if you love your shoulders you can buy an off the shoulder shirt to show off your collarbones.
4 Natural Hair
Overly styled hair was very popular a few years ago, but it has been dying a slow death for years. Gone are the days of overly straightened hair, or perfect ringlet curls that are frozen with hairspray. 2017 is all about natural hair and simple styles. Curly hair, straight hair, blonde hair, brown hair, black hair, afro hair -- this year is all about embracing every different type of hair. Ditch the straighteners and the hair dryer if you want to follow this trend; simply brush your hair in the morning and you're good to go. It is a great way to save time (which basically means that you get an extra 10 minutes in bed every day before work). If you're fed up of spending time every day styling your hair, you will be very happy to hear about this trend. And let's be honest, healthy, shiny hair is always going to be nicer than fried, dry, dead hair.
3 The Color Fuchsia
Lots of interesting colors have been on trend during the last few years. Mustard was popular and neutrals were popular for all of 2015 and 2016. However, the on-trend color for 2017 is much more interesting than previous colors. This year the Paris Fashion Week runways were all about Fuchsia. Think of the brightest pink -- not a dusty rose or a pale bubblegum. The most vibrant shade of pink was featured at Topshop on the heels of pointed stilettos, and Bottega Veneta also featured lots of hot pink leather macs and rain coats. Hermès even featured a show-stopping tulle skirted evening gown. Fuchsia may seem like an intimidating color, but there are lots of ways that you can incorporate it into your wardrobe. You can try a small nod to pink with a fuchsia handbag or lipstick, or you can go all-out with a fuchsia dress or skirt.
2 Mini Bags
Once upon a time, the only popular bag size was oversized. Every celebrity seemed to a have a brown leather bag that was big enough to fit a child into, and soon everyone on the high street had an oversized bag of their own. The oversized bag trend died out a few years ago now, and since then bags have been getting smaller and smaller. Perhaps that is why the main bag trend for 2017 is mini bags. Lots of catwalks at the New York Fashion Week featured ridiculously tiny bags: Valentino featured stunning bags that were just big enough to hold a lipstick, Hermes featured even smaller bags with beautiful, detailed patterns, and Chloe featured mini bags that were attached to gold bracelet bangles. Mini bags are the perfect night out accessory, as they can hold your mobile, your bank card, your lipstick - and not much else. However, you may want to use a bigger bag for your daily life!
1 Tulle Skirts
Did you spend your childhood dreaming about being a ballet dancer? If so, you will be very happy to hear that tulle is one of the biggest fashion trends for 2017! Lots of runways at Paris and New York Fashion Week featured tulle, and there were lots of different styles to choose from; Dior used tulle to add a feminine edge to their show, while Molly Goddard made tulle more fashion forward by using shades of navy. Some designers even featured floral tulle, which was reminiscent of a Victorian novel. If you want to try the tulle trend this spring, invest in a knee-length tulle skirt to nail the look. You can dress the skirt up with an embellished top and heels (kitten heels are a great option if you want to try more than one trend at once), or you can dress it down with a blazer and flats. Popular color options include navy, neutrals, light pink and of course fuchsia. Follow these trends and your 2017 will be your most fashionable and healthiest year yet!
