15 Things You Didn't Know About Grey's Anatomy Star Giacomo Gianniotti
If the name Giacomo Gianniotti isn't super familiar, what about the name Andrew DeLuca? Yup, this dreamy guy plays the doctor who's in love with Jo Wilson and who was beat up by Alex Karev on Grey's Anatomy. He has only been on the show since 2015 aka season 11, but he's definitely stolen your heart and make a huge impact on you. Now you can't imagine the hospital or the dramatic series without him and you want him to stick around. He's got amazing brown hair, beautiful brown eyes, and his name is pretty gorgeous too. But do you know anything about this adorable actor… well, besides the fact that he's starring on one of your fave shows, of course? Read on to find out 15 things you didn't know about Giacomo Gianniotti. He's so much more than just a pretty face (although he sure is pretty!).
15 He's Italian
You could probably guess from his first and last name, but now you know for sure: this actor is definitely Italian. He was born in Rome, Italy and spent a few years there before his family moved to Toronto, Canada (more on that next). Yes, he still knows his Italian, in case you were wondering. If you take a look at his Instagram, which is a really great account, you will see that he posts half in English and half in Italian. As he told Interview magazine, "I grew up bilingual. I grew up speaking Italian with my father and his family, who are all Italian. My mom, after living there for 15 years, was fully fluent in Italian as well. When I moved to Canada, when I was starting kindergarten and grade one, I couldn't really speak English quite yet. English was definitely my second language, but when you're a kid you can absorb languages so quickly and without accents." He must have been the cutest kid ever.
14 He's Also Canadian
Yup, this guy is Canadian. He grew up in Toronto (in the area of North York, specifically) and he has been interviewed in a lot of Canadian media as a result, like Post City magazine. It's cool to see how far he has come. He studied acting at Humber College in Toronto before starting to find some success in Hollywood. He has had a few guest roles on different television shows and has appeared in a few films, but it definitely wasn't until he was cast as Andrew DeLuca that he really started to see some success. It's like this role was made for him, wouldn't you agree? It's totally impossible to think about another actor having this role. It just wouldn't feel the same and you would definitely feel like something was off. He is so perfect as DeLuca. He's been working on his craft since forever: when he was a kid and moved to Toronto, he studied acting.
13 He Is Officially A 'Grey's Anatomy' Star
At first, Giacomo was technically a guest star on the show, or at least he wasn't a series regular. But in January 2016, all that changed and now he's officially a regular, and that's really awesome news. Andrew DeLuca is a really fascinating character and has totally changed the game on the show if you think about it. He's brought another layer to the whole Alex Karev/Jo Wilson situation and now there's kind of a little love triangle happening. While it seems like Jo isn't into DeLuca, you kind of feel like maybe she does like him, even if she's not able to fully admit it, not even to herself. Because come on. She and Alex had such big problems that they broke up and they've barely even talked since then, let alone even looked at each other. Ugh. It's the worst thing ever. But then there's the fact that DeLuca is incredibly hot and extremely sweet, so… maybe Jo should reconsider.
12 He's 27 Years Old
You might think that the actor looks older than 27, but nope, he's in his late 20s. Pretty good for 27, right?! It's awesome that he was able to land such an amazing part on such an epic and incredible TV drama. This is his first major role for sure, even though he has had a few other TV roles and has been in some movies too. Getting cast in a Shonda Rhimes drama when you're still in your 20s? Yeah, that's pretty impressive and just proves that he is seriously going places. You can't wait to be along for the ride because there's no way that you're not going to follow his acting career super closely now. You are a fan and that's the way that it's going to stay. After growing up in both Rome and Toronto, he now lives in L.A., which is another sign that this acting thing is not going to go away anytime soon and his success is going to last.
11 He's An Awesome Cook
Chefs back in the kitchen! I love to cook so much and am loving having the time to be doing it again. Nourish your soul with great food and be grateful that we are blessed enough to have it! #chefsback #backonmycookinggame #daje
A post shared by Giacomo Gianniotti (@giacomo_gianniotti) on May 5, 2017 at 2:16pm PDT
Did you know that the actor is also pretty handy in the kitchen? It turns out that he absolutely loves getting creative and cooking up some delicious and epic meals. In early May 2017, Giacomo posted this photo on his Instagram account and said, "Chef's back in the kitchen! I love to cook so much and am loving having the time to be doing it again. Nourish your soul with great food and be grateful that we are blessed enough to have it!" It's really cool that he loves to cook since it seems like he really loves it and it's always awesome and inspiring when someone isn't afraid to do what they enjoy and follow their passion. And just in case you were wondering (because you definitely are), it's totally normal if you want him to cook for you. You're probably not the only Grey's fan dreaming of that.
10 He's Gotten Award Noms
You definitely think that Giacomo is an awesome actor and it turns out that others think the same way. Of course. He's really believable when he plays a character and since he's so easy on the eyes too (and that's an understatement), he's got the perfect combination of good looks, charm, and serious talent. In 2016, he got two award nominations from the Golden Maple Awards. He was nominated for Newcomer of the Year in a TV Series Broadcasted in the US and Best Actor in a TV Series Broadcasted in the US. You know that this is only the beginning of his amazing acting career and that he will definitely be recognized for his talent in the future, so you're excited to see where Hollywood takes him. You can for sure see him as the main character of a television series and you know that he will absolutely star in more than a few movies. It's pretty much written in the stars for this guy.
9 He Was Bullied As A Kid
Yup, and this totally breaks your heart. You can just imagine how completely adorable he was as a child. It's seriously horrible to picture him being bullied, but then again, most people did get bullied during elementary or high school. You were probably bullied at one point, too. So you can relate to him on that level. For Giacomo, the teasing happened because of the fact that he is Italian, which is just all kinds of terrible. Kids can be so cruel, it's just ridiculous. He has told Interview magazine, "I got picked on a lot. The town where my mom moved to is called Parry Sound, Ontario. It's a very small town, 6,500 people. There wasn't a lot for kids to do and there wasn't a lot of diversity in terms of race and religion. If you were anything different from white and protestant, you stuck out, and my name was Giacomo, which nobody could really pronounce or figure out, so people would always make fun of my name." He said that all he wanted was to fit in, which a lot of kids definitely feel, but of course now he gets that his culture and background are something to be proud of.
8 He Says His Character Wasn't 100 Percent Finished
When Giacomo was hired on Grey's Anatomy, his character's story wasn't 100 percent finished or fleshed out, according to what he said in an interview with, well, Interview magazine. When he was asked if his character was "fully established" at the time of his audition for the part, his answer was, "No, no. I think they just needed fresh blood on the show; people that were going to shake things up and that had something different. I don't know that they necessarily had grandiose plans for this character. I think they just wanted to bring on someone new who was interesting and well rounded. Shonda has had conversations with us about how the character ownership is kind of a 50-50 thing. As much as they write things for you, a lot of the things they come up with is from her watching us and watching how we translate the material." It's interesting to know that, right?
7 He Studied For His 'Grey's' Audition During A Road Trip
Where was Giacomo when he found out that he was a serious contender for the role of Andrew DeLuca? Sitting in a car with his friends. They were on a road trip to L.A. that was slated to take place over a period of three days, and his manager said that he was one of the two guys that Shonda Rhimes was choosing between for the part. Talk about some super awesome, cool, and life-changing news. Well, if he got the part, that is. Which of course he did. He studied his lines during the road trip and he did so well that he was cast. What's interesting is that the role wasn't supposed be a series regular at first. It wasn't even supposed to be much of a guest role, either. He was just going to be in a couple episodes. Well, that worked out in his favor and, of course, the rest is television history. DeLuca is here to stay.
6 He's Super Active
Training my body to prepare for a new film project and it's kicking my ass. #GymLife #icantrunanymore
- Giacomo Gianniotti (@GiacomoKG) June 23, 2014
Giacomo has shared in interviews that he used to go rock climbing and hiking back when he was a kid, and it turns out that he is still living a super active lifestyle as an adult. He recently completed Tough Mudder. He definitely enjoys living a healthy and happy lifestyle and that's something that is incredibly important to him. If you want to see him working out (and, duh, of course you do… ) you should definitely check out his Twitter account. He talks a lot about when he's breaking a sweat. This is just one tweet that proves how fit he is: "Training my body to prepare for a new film project and it's kicking my a$$ #GymLife #icantrunanymore." If you want to, you can also check out the Pinterest page that seems to be solely devoted to shirtless photos of the dreamy and hunky actor. Just putting that out there.
5 He's Charitable
Yup, Giacomo is not only good looking but he does a lot of good, too. When he did Tough Mudder, he did that with a bunch of people from Grey's Anatomy: some of the cast and crew and people in their lives. He has been working with a charity called My Friend's Place which focuses on homeless teenagers who live in L.A. When Giacomo does Tough Mudder, he collects some cash for the charity, which just proves that this is a case that he seriously believes in. This year, he was able to get $20,000. In 2016, he got $15,000 for them. Yup. Pretty amazing. In some interviews, Giacomo has said that when he lived in Toronto, he was very involved with some charities that helped homeless people, so it was only natural that when he heard about My Friend's Place from someone who works in costumes for Grey's, he would get involved with that as well.

Bet you didn't know that Giacomo just directed a music video, but now you know. The song is called "Falling For You" and looks super cool, at least judging from the photos that he has posted on Instagram so far. His caption says, "These are my two incredibly talented actors which I cannot wait for you all to meet in our video. They met on the day, showed such passion and immense talent and patience with our very long 12 hour days back to back. I cannot thank you enough. I am so lucky and blessed to have you lend your talents to this art." It's also pretty cool that he went back to his hometown (or one of his hometowns) of Toronto to film the music video. It's always cool when you can go back to your roots and that often results in a really amazing end product. You definitely can't wait to see the video, right?!
3 He's Close With His Sister
This is my sister Isabella. She just visited and we had such a great time. She is such a beautiful, smart, funny, creative, deep young woman, and I so cherished the time we spent together. Took this photo of her at breakfast. Thanks for all the good times. Miss you little sis. @bellagianniotti #proudbrother
A post shared by Giacomo Gianniotti (@giacomo_gianniotti) on Mar 1, 2017 at 3:20pm PST
Don't you just want to yell "Awwwwww" when you see this photo and this caption?! Giacomo has shared that his sister is named Isabella and that they are super close. He calls her "beautiful, smart, funny, creative" and "deep" and then uses the hashtag #proudbrother. He then talks about who much he misses her and enjoys hanging out with her. OMG. That just gets you right in the heart. It's always nice when you see that fame hasn't gone to a celebrity's head, and you can definitely tell that Giacomo is never going to become a total jerk who hates everyone and everything and is super rude. You can't even imagine him saying that and that's definitely a good thing. Just another reason why you are a massive fan of Giacomo Gianniotti and why that will absolutely always be the case.
2 He's A Horror Movie Fan
I grew up watching scary movies because my step-mom was a huge horror film fan. And she ultimately turned my sisters and I into fans as well. This is one of the films she showed me as a child and it frightened me to the core so much I have never watched it since. If your like me and binging old scary movies tonight and want to look back at some of the classics. Do not miss this one. Stephen King at his best. Happy Halloween everyone. Be scary, but be safe! 👻👽🕵🏽☃☠ #Boo #petcemetary
A post shared by Giacomo Gianniotti (@giacomo_gianniotti) on Oct 31, 2016 at 6:29pm PDT
In this Instagram post from last Halloween, Giacomo has shared that he has always been a big fan of horror movies. He says that his stepmom got him into the genre when he was growing up, but Stephen King's Pet Sematary scared him a lot, so he wasn't super keen on watching it again. So cute. And if you've seen that movie, then yeah, you can totally agree with that. It's a pretty horrifying movie. It's pretty cute that the rest of the caption reads, "Happy Halloween everyone. Be scary, but be safe!" And then he used the hashtag #Boo. Yup, you're pretty confident that this guy is the sweetest, most adorable actor ever, and you're not going to listen to anyone who says otherwise. You can't imagine anyone not being a huge fan of him. Just look at him. And just look at his social media accounts and read his interviews. He is the best.
1 He's A Total Sweetheart
Just look at Giacomo's Instagram account and you will see pretty much ASAP that he is the nicest guy ever. He calls his fans "wonderful" and always makes sure to thank them for their love and support. He definitely seems thrilled with his success in the acting industry and he really appreciates that people are enjoying his role on the show. He also seems to smile pretty much 24/7, which you're not complaining about since let's face it, he's super hot. He also calls himself a "lover" on his Twitter account and rumor has it that he has a girlfriend named Nichole, so you get the feeling that he's probably a bit of a hopeless romantic as well. Okay, okay, you think that he is a massive hopeless romantic. You can only imagine how he wooed her. But then again, just look at him. He probably just smiled at her and she was a goner. No, you're not jealous…
