15 WTF Moments On Every Millennials' Fave Show
Younger is one of the most fun and fashionable shows on television and since the season four air date has been set, it's thankfully not going anywhere anytime soon. This show is basically a millennial dream since it follows Liza Miller, a fortysomething woman pretending to be a 26-year-old. She has a pretty legit reason for faking her forever young status: after her divorce, she found it impossible to get hired in publishing, and she needed to work. It helps that she looks and dresses the part of a member of Generation Y. If you've seen the show, then you love watching Liza and her co-worker Kelsey (aka Hilary Duff), you're crushing on Liza's hot younger boyfriend Josh (who's also a tattoo artist), and you enjoy the quirky storylines and jokes. There's only one problem. Sometimes, things happen that totally confuse you, and you really wish that you had some answers. Here are 15 of the weirdest moments on Younger.
15 Maggie's Massive Apartment
Okay, so you totally get that Liza's longtime best friend Maggie started living in her fabulous Brooklyn apartment years ago. Even decades ago. That must have been before rents skyrocketed and the area got super trendy, right? So you understand that is why she can still afford her apartment. But… you're still not sure about this. She's an artist. As in a totally old-school artist. Yes, she's awesome and inspiring. She lives her life the way that she wants to and more people could stand to do that. It's just that you're not sure that she's really raking in the dough and you feel like she would have had to move a long time ago. It's not a huge issue and you still love the show. She's not the only television character to live in an apartment that IRL would be expensive AF. It's just something that makes you wonder.
14 Diana's Fear Of Dating
In a third season episode, you see Diana in a therapy appointment and you learn that she's pretty scared of dating. Her therapist suggests that instead of moping around and spending every weekend alone, claiming that it's not her fault that she's single, she should try talking to a guy. She could say yes if someone asked her out. She could even ask someone out herself. You don't get this. You really don't. Because Diana is awesome. She's beautiful, she's stylish, and she's confident. Well, okay, so she's a bit insecure… but so is everyone. She doesn't seem any more insecure than anyone else. You really think that if she tried, she could meet an awesome guy who would be super impressed with her career and her lifestyle. She needs to give herself more of a fighting chance and it's really frustrating to see her refusing to go on more dates.
13 Liza's Divorce Has Taken Forever
You totally get that divorce is not an easy thing and that sometimes, it takes a really long time for everything to be finalized. There's paperwork galore and one person can refuse to sign or take their sweet time. It's pretty strange that Liza's divorce has taken absolutely forever. There's an episode near the end of the third season where she is finally signing her divorce papers with her soon to be ex-husband David. She mistakenly writes down the wrong birth date (one that would make her 26, not 40… oops) and then there's the fact that David is under the impression that they're going to get back together. You just don't get why he would think that considering the fact that he's the one who forced the break-up, and you really think that this divorce should have been over a long time ago. David isn't a threat to Liza and Josh's relationship. Not at all.
12 Kelsey Thinks That Online Dating Is Easy
One of the weirdest moments on this show? When Kelsey ventures into the world of online dating and says that it seems super simple. That's because she meets a seemingly perfect, nice guy who doesn't seem to have any red flags. She suggests to her friends that this isn't really a big deal after all. Then she learns that there's a catch with this dream guy: he lives in Roosevelt Island (aka not in NYC at all). Major faux pas, or at least that's what Kelsey and her friend Lauren believe. It's confusing that Kelsey, who's in her 20s, would honestly think that dating (and online dating in particular) would be easy. Hasn't she heard the horror stories from her friends and peers? Doesn't she know that it's really tough to meet someone that you like? This is definitely a confusing storyline. You don't know anyone who would think this way.
11 Josh Flip Flops About Liza's Experience (And Lack Of)
In one third season episode, Josh is upset that Liza has only slept with three people. His number is so high that he doesn't even want to say it. Since Liza has only slept with him, her husband David, and a college TA when she was 18, Josh wonders if she needs to sleep with some other guys. He's convinced that she's missed out on some stuff. But then… in another episode, Josh freaks out that Liza was married for so long and doesn't think that he can compete. He says that she will never have a “first” with him. Sure, that storyline ends in a super sweet way when she asks him to give her a tattoo (since that would be a first). But you're still left shaking your head at Josh. One day he's convinced that she has zero experience and the next, it's too much? Come on buddy. You have the best girlfriend ever. Just be cool.
10 Kelsey And Colin's Budding Romance
On the one hand, you think that Kelsey and New Yorker writer Colin have a meet cute in a library at a literary event. Since she's a book editor (and has her own imprint), she needs to be with someone in a similar industry. Well, of course she doesn't have to, but it would make sense since she's such a bookworm. What's weird is that he tells her on their first date that he wrote a novel and wants her to read it. She freaks out (and rightly so) because she thinks that he's using her to try to get his book published. But then she reads it and thinks it's amazing and decides to help him get an agent. More than that, she wants to publish the book. This is strange and confusing. Is he using her or not?! If she really felt that he was using her, why would she change her mind and keep seeing him? It's even weirder when he decides to go with another publisher… and she's still going to keep dating him.
9 Liza's Love Triangle
Sure, Charles is a handsome man and he runs the publishing company so he's got that going for him. He's basically the definition of eligible bachelor. You get that Liza is crushing on him and that she's torn since he's her age… but she can't be with him since that would be super inappropriate since she's supposed to be in her 20s. Oh yeah, and they work together. That too. But you have to admit that you think that this love triangle with Liza, her boyfriend Josh, and her boss Charles is kind of weird. That's because you absolutely adore Josh. He's not only extremely good looking but is really kind too. He ends up not even caring that she's older than him (well, for the most part - nothing's perfect) and he even takes care of her when she gets into a bike accident. You just don't know why Liza would even look at another guy when she's lucky enough to have Josh.
8 Liza's Daughter Caitlyn Isn't Suspicious
When you know someone really well, you can usually tell when they have changed. You can especially tell when they have changed a lot. That is even more true if they are a family member -- like your mom, for instance. It is pretty weird that Liza's daughter Caitlyn does not suspect that Liza has made more changes than just moving in with Maggie in Brooklyn. She really does not seem to think that anything is all that different and is content to accept her mom's new address. You have to wonder why she is not pressing for more answers and trying to figure out more about her mom's new world. Sure, she is in college and she is focused on her own life, but doesn't she care that her mom is dressing super different (aka super young)? Doesn't she realize that things might not actually be all that they seem? It's a bit unrealistic.
7 When Liza Quits Her Job
In the season two finale, Liza quits her job and starts working at a department store. Look, there's nothing wrong with that. It makes sense that she would get that kind of job since she needs to work… and the entire premise of the show is that she couldn't get a job without lying about her age. But when Liza quits her job at Empirical, it's really weird. It just is. You don't get it because she tried so hard to find something in publishing and she has gone through so much trouble to make it work. She's lied about her identity, she's started dressing like a millennial, and she's even navigated the crazy world of millennial slang and trends. She's honestly put in a ton of effort and it doesn't make sense to you that she would just walk away from that life. It's definitely much better than her old life and it seems like she would be totally miserable if she wasn't working in publishing and trying to be younger.
6 Liza And Her Boss Kiss
When Liza and Charles share a kiss, you weren't on board. And you're still really frustrated about this. Why? Because you love Josh. You do. You don't think that Liza and Charles should have actually kissed. For one thing, it's much better when there is some tension and when the characters who have chemistry and are attracted to each other don't actually get physical. And for another thing, this just makes things even more complicated at the office. Yes, you totally get that a story needs tension and drama and conflict, and that love triangles are a pretty dramatic thing. They often are the best thing about a television show. But in this case, you don't think that Charles and Liza should have any more make-out moments. You will definitely be really, really upset if there are. You're crossing your fingers that this doesn't happen again.
5 Liza Is Still An Assistant
When you watch the third season of this show, you can't believe that Liza is actually still an assistant. She's clearly so smart and motivated and has an awesome work ethic, and what's more, Charles and Diana and Kelsey think that she's a huge part of the company. Since everyone seems to agree that she rocks at her job, why hasn't she gotten a promotion by now?! Sure, maybe the show is trying to be more realistic because most 26-year-olds have to pay their dues and can't just get promoted that easily. But this is a television show. It's not supposed to be completely realistic. And as this list proves, there are definitely enough things in this series in particular that aren't super realistic. You really want to see Liza get promoted and you think it's super weird that she hasn't been by now. Maybe in season four?!
4 Kelsey Slept With Thad's Brother Chad
You do think it's pretty funny that Thad had a twin brother named Chad. Yup. It's comedy gold. You're not on board with the revelation that Kelsey once mistakingly slept with Chad, thinking that he was her boyfriend Thad. You kind of think that you would be able to tell twin brothers apart. Right? Wouldn't you? Especially if you had been in a long-term, serious relationship with one of them? If you can't tell your BF apart from someone else, that's kind of depressing. You're not shaming Kelsey. Of course not. You love her and would totally be her BFF if she was real. You just wish that this storyline didn't exist. It was bad enough that you had to deal with Thad on a regular basis. You still shudder about that character. It would have been so much better if he was replaced with someone more interesting.
3 Kelsey Getting Engaged
Okay, so you never thought that Kelsey would actually marry Thad. You really didn't. She barely liked him and it was like she merely tolerated him. Let's be real here: he was a jerk. He treated her badly and she deserved so much better. It doesn't' make sense that someone as beautiful and amazing as Kelsey wouldn't find someone else. She could have a million guys falling at her feet and instead she chose Thad?! Not only that, but she was going to marry him? No way. Not happening. Not even remotely close to believable. Thad and Kelsey's engagement was a really strange storyline and you're still not over it. It confused you to no end. Were the writers trying to make a point that sometimes girls get engaged just for show? Maybe. That does happen so it does make sense. But you still hate this plot.
2 The Way That Kelsey's Fiance Dies
Is it weird that you weren't even sad when Thad died?! You also find the way that he died super weird. He basically got crushed from some construction that fell off a building. Yes, that's really what happened. If you had never seen that for yourself, you would never have believed that would be the case. Why couldn't he have died in a car accident or something like that? Why did he have to pass away in the strangest way possible? It's really too weird for words. You honestly try to forget that this even happened because a.) you never liked Thad and b.) you don't even want to picture someone dying this way. Nope. Living in denial is a much better option. Of course, you wouldn't expect someone to die in a more normal way on this show because that's just the way that this show is. But you don't have to like it. Which is good since you don't.
1 The Sheep Incident
Oh yes. This is the crown jewel of the weird moments on Younger. In a season two episode, Liza meets Sebastian, a seemingly cool guy who is all about living on the land and being one with nature. Liza is intrigued by him and even thinks that she could get him a book deal. So she travels to his farm and they hang out. Then… the weirdest moment on this show happens. It's the weirdest moment in the history of television, really. Okay, that may be a tad dramatic, but if you've seen this episode, then you totally agree that the drama is warranted. She sees Sebastian having, um, intimate relations. Not with another woman. Nope. With one of his sheep. OMG. It's not something that you ever wanted to see and you wish that you could unsee it. Sorry Younger. You're a good show. These 15 moments were just a bit too weird.
