16 Celebs Who Were Not Afraid To Throw Shade At Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande has had a fair share of controversy over the years. She successfully transformed from Disney and Nickelodeon squeaky-clean teen star, to a full-blown provocative pop star with a ponytail higher than her own opinion of herself. She told Clash magazine, "I don't wake up in the morning and say, 'Hey, what can I do to shock people today?'" Well she sure could have fooled us, because everywhere we turn there seems to be another Ariana drama taking over showbiz news.

Celebrity shade is addictive - stars of today appear untouchable, with enough self-esteem and charisma that nobody can tear them down. But that's not true because over the years it's been proven that few brave stars are willing to throw major shade at each other and Ariana is one of those who has been caught directly in the firing line.

She may have 43 million followers on Twitter, 95 million followers on Instagram any many celebrity enemies.

    16 Rihanna

Rihanna is the true queen of mean and her shady side came out in force during Ariana's performance at the 2014 iHeart Radio Music Awards. When Ariana took to the stage to perform a melody of her hits The Way and Problem, her dance moves appeared 'clumsy' according to many of her fans, clearly the Love On The Brain singer thought exactly the same. The cameras panned to RiRi several times throughout the performance and she was seen covering her mouth after being hit by a fit of giggles - at one point she doubled over her table with laughter. Ouch.

This isn't the first time RiRi has took a swipe at stars on stage. In 2013, she appeared physically repulsed when Miley Cyrus twerked in front of Robin Thicke during the VMAs and during Britney Spears' disastrous 2007 performance of Gimme More there was also a burst of giggles. So Ariana needn't worry - RiRi is just a mean girl at heart.

    15 Chrissy Teigen

Ariana always kills it when she hosts Saturday Night Live, her fans are quick to praise and the reactions are very positive - but for some stars, it's not enough. TV personality and model Chrissy Teigen took a moment during watching Saturday Night Live to throw shade at the singer's signature cat-ear headband.

In the middle of the show, Teigen, who is married to crooner John Legend, tweeted, "I love your cat ear headband it alerts me to immediately hate you." When fans launched a tirade of hate straight back at Teigen she followed with, "What attack? Is she the first and only to wear cat ears? Slow news day." Although the timing of the tweet and the fact Ariana was wearing the headband, there was no way it could be denied this was straight-up shade.

    14 Lindsey Lohan

Lindsay Lohan is well known for her bizarre behaviour, but when the actress threw major shade at Ariana on Instagram people wondered if she really had lost her mind. Ariana posted a selfie during rehearsals for Hairspray Live with her co-star Dove Cameron. Strangely Lohan decided to write in the comments, "Too much makeup" aimed at Ariana's pink eyeshadow.

The blunt comment took many of Ariana's fans by surprise but the Into You singer didn't have to fire back as her fans went ahead and did that for her. One fan wrote, "@LindsayLohan but your movie career didn't even last adult years. By the time you was 24 years old you already looked 42. Worry about yourself and career." Another added, "And too much surgery for you." We're not quite sure what the beef between the two stars could have been between the two - of if this was just another day in Lohan land.

    13 Jeanette McCurdy

One actress who has a lot to say about Ariana is Jeanette McCurdy and trust us when we say that she does not hold back. McCurdy was one-half of the Sam & Cat show and she worked with the Dangerous Woman singer for a whole year. Not long after the show came to an end, McCurdy vented on Twitter about how she really feels.

When a fan asked her why the show ended, she replied, "I enjoyed (Ariana's) company because she was fun and energetic, but I had reservations about how much I could trust her. She seemed to be a leech for drama and gossip." Then she added a second tweet - this time directly fired at Ariana. McCurdy wrote, "I might possibly be the worst version of myself when I'm around you. I'm not playing your games, letting you manipulate me and succumbing to your twisted perception of reality." She added for good measure, "You sucked the life right out of me, and I want my life back."

    12 Solange Knowles

Solange Knowles (that's Beyonce's sister if you didn't know) weighed in on the Ariana is a Mariah Carey imitator debate with some brutal shade. When Solange released new music to her fans last year, one fan tweeted the star that her vocals were so on point that she sounded like Mariah. Solange tweeted back, "No one is better at this than Ariana Grande tho. So ima just chill, lol. Happy Sunday!" You can't compliment some people without them using it as a chance for throwing shade.

Although Solange has made her feelings clear about Ariana, her big sister Beyonce is actually a true fan. Queen Bey released her own playlist to fans that included her favorite tracks and Ariana's Problem featured on there alongside Kanye West's All Falls Down and Kendrick Lamar's Good Kid.

    11 Drake Bell

Child star turned musician Drake Bell did not hold back on his own thoughts about Ariana. During an interview with BuzzFeed, he said, "I don't think a lot of these young people have to work very hard. They're found on YouTube and, boom, thrown into the studio so they think they can get anything they want. Ariana Grande is a billionaire before she's been an artist. You have to work to be able to appreciate what you have, and what work did she ever have to do in her life?"

Even though the shade was very harsh, Bell actually wasn't wrong about Ariana. The Focus singer grew up in Boca Raton, which is one of the most affluent cities in Florida. Her father, Edward Butera, is the CEO of Ibi Designs Inc, and even though the family have never been stuck for cash Ariana is now miles ahead with a personal net worth of an estimated $28 million.

    10 Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus is close friends with Ariana but even she couldn't help throw a little shade at the star. During an interview with The New York Times, the Wrecking Ball singer poked fun at her friends' "good-girl persona." She said, "I don't have a bunch of celeb friends, because I feel like some of them are a little scared of the association. This is terrible. I was backstage with Ariana Grande. I'm like, 'Walk out with me right now and get this picture, and this will be the best thing that happens to you, because just you associating with me makes you a little less sweet.'"

The comments must have struck a chord with Ariana as she was quick to shake off those cat-ears and the ponytail in a bid to make her image edgier. Her past videos for Dangerous Woman and Side to Side featuring Nicki Minaj has seen her emerge as a more sultry performer than a cute pop star.

    9 Jai Brooks

Ariana's former boyfriend, musical comedian Jai Brooks, clearly had no respect left for the singer when he discovered she had allegedly cheated on him with singer Nathan Sykes. The pair collaborated on a track together and apparently got too close for comfort. Brooks ranted on Twitter, "Once you are cheated on, you should never go back and I did because I wasn't ready to give up on love and something that was everything to me."

The Janoskian singer added, "Today was supposed to be our one-year anniversary, but instead I'm writing this. Do you know how s*** this makes me feel. She may not respond to this post, may ignore it, may deny it or may own up to it, she is going to do what's best for her and do what she thinks is right, which is what I'm doing… I'm looking out for myself." Let it all out, Jai.

    8 Luke Brooks

Luke Brooks was another star who weighed in on Ariana - and it's no surprise as he is the brother of Jai who she allegedly cheated on. His tweets were much more brutal after discovering she had started dating Nathan Sykes - he tweeted, "Mhhhhmmmm ehhh Nahhhhriana." Followed by another tweet that read, "Who remembers the advice I gave once? 'Don't be a stupid h**."

The fight was far from private and an even bigger fight broke out between the Grande and Brooks families. Frankie Grande, Ariana's brother, wrote, "Anybody who believes that rumor about my sister needs to pause. Open their eyes and remember how much she loved him. He CRUSHED her with a phone breakup and to see Ari that miserable broke MY heart." Jai fired back with, "Don't you dare talk about me, you don't know me." It was a great time to sit back with the popcorn and just enjoy the feuding between them all.

    7 Giuliana Rancic

E! and Fashion Police presenter Giuliana Rancic did not hold back about what it was like to meet Ariana on the red carpet. She told US Weekly, “I was at the AMAs, Little Ariana comes over, I feel like 'bing,' elbow in my side. I'm like, 'What's going on?' And they push me to the other side… So I had to be on my ugly side. But I felt like a little bit of a, you know, it was like, 'You either get on the other side or we don't do an interview.'”

Rancic added, "I just felt like it's one thing if it's Mariah, you know, I'll get on any side, I'll bend down, I'll climb a ladder, whatever it takes to get Mariah to do an interview. But when you're new on the block… you just gotta do what you gotta do, try to get a great reputation, try to go overboard to please people.”

    6 Victoria Justice

Victoria Justice co-starred with Ariana in Victorious for nearly three years before the show was canceled. There were many rumors why the popular show was pulled and Ariana added more fuel to the fire when she tweeted, "Sweetheart the only reason Victorious ended is because 1 girl didn't want to do it. She chose to do a solo tour instead of a cast tour. If we had done a cast tour Nickelodeon would have ordered another season of Victorious while Sam and Cat filmed simultaneously but she chose otherwise. I'm sick of this bs."

Clearly, Justice took this personally and she responded with, "Some people would throw some1 that they consider a friend under the bus just 2 make themselves look good. #StopBeingAPhony #IfTheyOnlyKnew." Calling Ariana out as a phony so publically really proves Justice is not afraid of the singer.

    5 Alex DeLeon

Alex DeLeon, lead singer of the band The Cab, did not have a pleasant time when he met with singer Ariana and he wasn't quiet about it either. The singer tweeted, "Hope none of my fans ever have the displeasure of meeting @ArianaGrande. Most stuck up, disrespectful person I've ever met in this industry."

Although it's unclear exactly what went down between the two, it is likely that Ariana's diva-like behavior reared it's ugly head once again. During a meet and greet with fans who had won an MTV competition, she was not happy when fans took some unflattering pictures of her and demanded they were deleted. She told the fans, "Delete those pictures." Before she left, she told her security, "Make sure (the fans) deleted those.” The fans probably regretted entering the competition after that.

    4 Perez Hilton

It's no surprise that celebrity blogger and TV personality Perez Hilton had some shade to throw at Ariana as this is how he's made his money for several years now. He tweeted Ariana with some very shady tweets in 2014. The first tweet read, "@ArianaGrande Are you okay? I heard someone saw you doing cocaine at a party this weekend. Stay away from drugs, Ariana!!!"

He then posting the following, "@NickelodeonTV If it's true that @ArianaGrande has a drug problem, hopefully you guys can help her before it's too severe!" Perez soon to a sock in it when Radar online reported that she was seeking legal damages against the blogger and the tweets he had technically sent her employer. Perez clearly wasn't worried and moved on to bother another star.

    3 Mayim Bialik

Big Bang Theory star Mayim Balik, herself a feminist and a neuroscientistwas not happy with some of the billboards she had seen featuring Ariana. Oh her own blog, Kveller, she wrote, "A few billboards I have seen lately really bug me. There is one for Ariana Grande, and I will go ahead and admit I have no idea who she is or what she does. Based on the billboard, she sells lingerie. Or stiletto heels. Or plastic surgery because every woman over 22 wishes she has that body, I'm sure."

She continued, "Why is she in her underwear on this billboard though? And if she has a talent (is she a singer?), then why does she have to sell herself in lingerie? I mean, I know that society is patriarchal and women are expected to be sexy and sexually available no matter what we do in society, but I guess now I need to explain that to my sons?" Ariana, consider yourself schooled.

    2 Mariah Carey

The Mariah Carey and Ariana comparisons have reached the Queen Diva herself. The Heartbreaker singer was asked during a radio interview what she thought of Ariana being referred to as a "Young Mariah." Mariah joked, "First of all, I'm still young because I discount numbers. Numerically speaking, I stopped counting at 17."She then shaded Ariana's career when she threw in, "I wish everybody the best of luck and if this is the career path they choose, hopefully they can achieve." That's basically diva speak for - 'best of luck because you're going to need it, hunny.'

In a more recent interview with Andy Cohen, Mariah gave Ariana the 'I don't know her' treatment when she was asked about her music. She also added, "Honestly, I'm not familiar. I listen to hip-hop more than I listen to pop music."

    1 Bette Midler

Bette Middler is one woman who does not mix her words and when Ariana was in her firing line she got hit hard. Midler claimed the singer was "Ridiculous" and even labeled her a "w***e." During an interview with The Telegraph, she said of pop music, "It's terrible! It's always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, slithering around on a couch, looking so ridiculous." She added, "I mean, it's silly beyond belief and I don't know who's telling her to do it. I wish they'd stop. You don't have to make a w***e out of yourself to get ahead."

Ariana fired back with, "Bette was always a feminist who stood for women being able to do whatever the F they wanted without judgment! Not sure where that Bette went but I want that sexy mermaid back!!! always a fan no matter what my love." Bette tweeted, "She does have a beautiful voice, on a couch or of." Which might be her strange way of apologizing.
