16 Times Hanna Was The Most Disgusting Person On TV
HBO's Girls is done. Forever. It's officially the end of an era. Depending on your opinion of the series - since it was a series that people tended to have very, very strong opinions about - you may be really bummed that it's done or really relieved that it's done. Still, we all have to admit, regardless of our personal feelings, that Girls was a show that had a major influence on our pop culture, which is because Lena Dunham didn't shy away from really, really disgusting moments. Like, the most disgusting moments.
When we say that Lena Dunham's Hannah Horvath was too disgusting to handle at times, we don't really mean that in an insulting way. The point of her character and of the show was to, at times, be really disgusting. Her character was an insufferable millennial. She was selfish, self-involved, entitled and not remotely likable at times. But, we weren't supposed to like that character. We won't supposed to like any of the characters. This show offered us criticism about our society. It held a mirror up to the target audience of the show, which was other white millennial women, who don't realize that they, too, are selfish, self-involved, entitled and not remotely likable at times. We are all Hannah Horvath. (MIND. BLOWN.) And, Lena Dunham's Hannah Horvath also had her moments on the show where she embraced being physically disgusting but, again, that was the point. All the nudity and all the gross-out moments, for as disgusting as they were, were not in vain.
As a goodbye to HBO's Girls, here are Hannah's most disgusting moments that we really couldn't handle, even if that was kind of the point of the show.
13 Hannah Playing Naked Ping Pong
People who didn't watch Girls mostly know it as the show where Lena Dunham was naked a lot, and they're mostly right. Lena Dunham was naked, a lot. In so many ways, it pushed the envelope. Lena Dunhan does not have a traditionally "hot bod" (hard eye roll at the idea of the traditional hot bod). She's not Blake Lively. In fact, every other female star of the show - Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet - had bodies that were closer to what is considered desirable by society's standards. But, Lena Dunham flipped the script. Instead of parading around of our her “hotter” costars in nude scenes, the body we saw the most of was Dunham's body. This was groundbreaking because it was a normal body on television, though showing a normal body on television shouldn't actually be groundbreaking but it is.
All that being said, there were point in the show during which Dunham's nudity felt gratuitous and one of those moments was in S2, E5 (“One Man's Trash"). This episode guest starred Patrick Wilson as a hot doctor with whom Hannah hooks up. It's a great episode… but then there's that naked ping pong scene. THAT NAKED PING PONG SCENE. This scene felt unnecessary and so over the top. It was too much to handle. I mean, has anyone actually played ping pong naked? If you have, more power to you, but you're definitely in the minority.
12 Hannah And Jessa In The Bath Tub
This was also a disgusting moment and it also happened in season two. My personal theory is that season one was so praised for all the nudity and whatnot that Lena Dunham went too far with it in season two and totally missed the mark. Seriously, season two is by far the most disgusting season because much of the nudity exists without a reason or purpose. It's just there to be there.
In S2, E4 (“It's a Shame About Ray”), Jessa meets her husband's parents. (Remember when Jessa was married for, like, five episodes?) This meeting sparks an explosive fight between Jessa and her husband that ends in their divorce. Hannah then finds a broken Jessa in her bathtub… and gets in the tub with her. I have a ton of close girlfriends, but I've never gotten a bath with them, especially in my twenties and especially in a bath tub that looked like it hadn't be cleaned in thirteen years. I maybe would have been more down with this scene if the bath tub looked clean or if there were bubbles. An argument can be made that this is the real bathroom of a twenty-something in New York, but I'm still not down with the idea of lounging in this bath tub.
Oh, and then Jessa snots into the bathtub. No. NO. Get out of the bathtub now, ladies. It's just too gross.
The Q-Tip Moment
What is it with season two of Girls? The gross-out factor was high, y'all.
On a purely physical level, Hannah's OCD is hard to watch because it messes with her physically. She sticks a Q-Tip too far and it's awful to watch, mostly because it's so real and visceral. Watching that scene almost makes you feel the Q-Tip in your own ear and it's… too much. It's an especially hard scene to sit through because you see someone struggling with something internally that effects them physically. It's real.
Like many of the things Lena Dunham did so right with this show, this way of showcasing OCD was right on the nose. In television shows and movies, OCD is usually shown as a quirky thing that's almost cutesy. OCD characters usually line up paper clips and do other goofy things, but Lena Dunham took it the more realistic route, as Lena Dunham did time and time again with Girls. Because of how realistic this display of OCD was, it was hard to watch. Seeing someone stick a Q-Tip too far in their ear is just painful.
11 When Hannah Makes Jessa's Abortion About Her
The series started out with a bang. In S1E2 ("Vagina Panic"), Jessa thinks she needs to have an abortion but (spoiler alert) she actually doesn't. That's a little goofy, because it seems like she maybe didn't even take a pregnancy test… ? But also, it's so like Jessa to not even take a pregnancy test and schedule an abortion. Regardless, Jessa thinks she needs to get an abortion and Hannah… makes the abortion all about Hannah. No, I'm not kidding. Instead of giving Jessa this moment, Hannah wonders about what STDs Adam could have given her. It's so very like Hannah to make someone's abortion all about her, but it's also mega disgusting on a certain level. Hannah's self-involvement would become an ongoing thing throughout the entire series, but the first cut is the deepest so this first time was probably the most disgusting.
10 When Hannah Makes Her Editor's Death About Her
Hm, on second thought, THIS might have been Hannah's most disgusting moment of self-involvement.
In S3E4 ("Dead Inside"), Hannah's book editor dies. HE DIES and Hannah makes it all about Hannah, not her dead editor. She doesn't even seem all that concerned that he's dead. She's more concerned about the state of her yet-to-be-published book. She even asks his widowed wife if she knows about the status of her book. It is self-involvement at its finest and the other characters are quick to call her out on it.
No, this isn't outwardly disgusting in the way that Hannah's naked ping pong was but it's a very low moment for Hannah. I mean, she makes someone else's death all about her. What would possibly be more disgusting than that? We'll never be able to forget when she made her editor's death all about herself because it was a low-point, but it was in situations situations like this that the humor and the message of the show lied.
9 Hannah's Over-Colored Eyebrows
This one is too much to handle because it's TOO REAL. If you're a girl who colors in her eyebrows, it probably took you a few tries before you got it right. There's usually that moment of just loving how your eyebrows look with more definition and color, so you keep coloring… and coloring… and coloring. Most of us have, at one time or another, over-colored our eyebrows. And, if you think you haven't, maybe you're still over-coloring your eyebrows. Check yourself before you wreck yourself, girl.
Over-coloring your eyebrows happens to the best of us. It even happened to Hannah. But, it's because this moment is so real that it's so hard to look at. It's a reminded of a previous beauty blunder and, really, who wants to be reminded of their beauty mistakes? None of us. This show wonderfully captured one of the biggest beauty mistakes that we all go through in our twenties, even if we just want to forget about it.
Let this be a lesson to us all, the point of coloring in your eyebrows is for them to look naturally defined, not like Hannah's.
8 Hannah's Trying To Be Hot On The Phone
Girls did not shy away from cultural events, changes or phenomenons, and sexting 100% falls into all of those categories. Sexting has become a part of our society and, of course, Girls had to explore that… and, of course, it was kind of disgusting.
The first instance of Hannah sexting was in S1E4 (“Hannah's Diary”). In this episode, Adam sexts Hannah, but then he says he sent it to the wrong person. HE SENT IT TO THE WRONG PERSON! Could you even imagine anything more awkward? Hannah then replied with a nude text of herself. It was a weird reminder of the fact that sexting isn't real intimacy and that was too disgusting to handle, especially if you've sexted someone before.
The show explored sexting again in S5E3 (“Japan”). In this particular episode, Hannah finds nude pictures on Fran's phone from his ex-girlfriends. Again, could you even imagine anything more awkward? Apparently, Fran kept the nudes from his exes so he could masturbate to them. Hannah then gets Ray and Elijah to take hot, nude photos of her for Fran.
All of Hannah's explorations exposed how weird and sometimes disgusting sexting really is. It isn't real intimacy and it's kind of a gross thing that we now find normal.
Hannah On Substances
Back to season two and its grossness. Maybe it's just time we all realize that season two was, by far, the most disgusting season of Girls.
In S2E3 (“Bad Friend”), Hannah tries cocaine for the first time… and it's a real treat. I mean that. The episode is actually a treat to watch, but it was also a great display of what being on drugs really looks like. It's a little less glam and a little more gross. During the course of being on cocaine, Hannah writes on her bedroom walls, wears a mesh shirt sans bra, and does coke off a public toilet. Guys, she does cocaine off of a public toilet. That is beyond disgusting. Think of all the germs she snorted up her nose with that cocaine. This serves as a great reminder of what stupid things we are okay with when we're on drugs, like wearing mesh shirts and doing coke off public toilets.
7 When Hannah Takes The Hotel Money
From the very first episode of Girls, Hannah was not a likable character. In the pilot episode, we see Hannah's parents telling her that they are no longer paying for her life in New York City. By the way, Hannah is a 25-year-old college graduate, which makes the scene all that much better because shouldn't she be supporting herself?
It's also interesting that Hannah's parents don't fall into the typical set of parents who are paying for their child's life. In popular media, we see trust-fund babies all the time, whether it's on Gossip Girl or The O.C. They are depicted as the super rich, the 1%. But, Hannah's parents aren't the super rich. They are very well off, but there are no nannies, butlers, maids or chauffeurs in the lives of the Horvaths. This was a new display of someone living off her parents, who are kind of wealthy but not the super rich.
Here's the truly disgusting part, though - After being cut off, Hannah takes the money her parents left as a tip for he hotel maid. I mean, really Hannah?
6 When Hannah Flashes The Principal
By season five of Girls, we thought that Lena Dunham could no longer shock us. We thought wrong.
In S5E7 (“Hello Kitty”), Hannah pulls a Basic Instinct. What do we mean by that? Well, while being sat down by the principal of the school she works at (aka her boss), Hannah fears for her job so she makes a very weird decision. She opens her legs… and she's not wearing underwear… and she exposes her whole vagina. It's a stunning moment, which we can say because it really stunned us. In the scene, Lena Dunham is also rocking a full bush, so more power to her.
The nudity factor is a tad disgusting. Even more disgusting, though, is the fact that Hannah tried to use her sexuality to secure her job. In a world where women are constantly facing sexual harassment in the work place, Hannah's attempt to use this to her advantage was just… too much.
5 The Steam Room Moment
Oh, boy. That lesbian scene, guys! Honestly, we thought we probably would be talking about Jessa in a lesbian scene, but instead it was Hannah. Jessa did have two small lesbian scenes in the form of a kiss with Marnie and sleeping with another patient in rehab, but it was truly nothing compared to Hannah's experiment. In S5E5 (“Queen for Two Days”) Hannah goes on a retreat with her mother, where Hannah hits it off with a female yoga instructor. Like, really hits it off with the female yoga instructor. While in a sauna of all places, Hannah hooks up with the yoga instructor and it does not look hot. Well, actually it does look hot and that's the problem. It was too hot in that room for Hannah to get really into it. Just seeing Hannah in an uncomfortable new position IN A SAUNA looked too gross.
While sexual experimentation is something that's awesome and 100% not disgusting, maybe don't experiment in a sauna. It did not look pleasant.
4 Hannah's Wet Suit Mistake
In the season six premiere (“All I Ever Wanted”), Hannah was showing us a lot of Hannah Horvath. On an assignment from the online website for which she works, Hannah goes to a surf camp in the Hamptons. This sounded like the best assignment ever, for anyone other than Hannah. Hearing that she was going to a surf camp you just knew Hannah would fumble a bit. And, fumble she did. While there, Hannah mistakenly put on a stranger's wet suit… she put on a stranger's wet suit and didn't wear anything underneath. When the stranger asks for her wet suit back, Hannah is basically naked. Just imagine a stranger accidentally wearing your wet suit and being completely naked underneath. You would probably not really want that wet suit back ever, right?
Oh, and there's also the scene in which Hannah spreads her legs to let the sunshine in her vagina. No, not kidding. That totally happened. It was kind of hilarious and also kind of disgusting. But hey, almost everything on this show was kind of hilarious and kind of disgusting.
Hannah's Whole Relationship With Fran
Hannah's entire relationship with Fran was pretty disgusting. Why? Uh, because she clearly was never that into him.
Hannah meets Fran in S4E7 (“Ask Me My Name”) and it was okay. There weren't, like, fireworks, but it also didn't seem like they hated each other. After Fran tells Hannah that he's not into all her drama (points for Fran), they go their separate ways. And then, shock of all shocks, the season four finale ends with them randomly together. In a show full of nudity, Hannah seriously dating Fran was one of the most surprising things of all. Yes, maybe even more surprising than the moment when Hannah let sunshine into her vagina.
Season five continued with Fran and Hannah dating through a majority of the season. They don't even breakup until episode nine (“Love Stories”). Their relationship was never actually physically disgusting. In fact, compared to how we had seen Hannah in the past, it was very, very vanilla and not disgusting at all. But, that's what was gross about their relationship - the vanilla-ness. Hannah was trying to put herself into a box and that is not something Hannah, or any woman for that matter, should do. You should never take a job, or date a man, or have a baby just because you feel like you should.
It was icky (I think icky is the perfect word for their relationship, right?) watching Hannah try to make this relationship work because she felt like she had to.
3 Hannah's Eye Makeup Moment
Much like the over-colored eyebrows, this moment was too real and we couldn't handle it. In fact, it wasn't really disgusting at all, but we had to include it because of hard it is to watch. It's so all of us.
In the season three finale (“Two Plane Rides”), Hannah preps for Adam's play opening in the most realist way possible. She refers to a ripped-out magazine picture of Olivia Wilde, who is rocking perfect smoky eyes. Hannah then attempts to apply the same smoky eye makeup to herself. There are a few problems, one of which is that Hannah looks nothing like Olivia Wilde. They don't have the same face shape or eye shape. The second issue is that a professional makeup artist applied Olivia Wilde's makeup and Hannah's less talented hand is trying to apply her own. That being said, makeup doesn't come out horribly. In fact, Hannah looks pretty cute, but she doesn't look like Olivia Wilde.
This moment was the realest of the real. How many times have you pinned a photo of Pinterest only to no be able to achieve the same makeup look or hairstyle? You, like Hannah, don't throw a hissy fit. Sure, there's a quiet disappointment in the reality that you don't look like Olivia Wilde or whoever it was you pinned. Lena Dunham's portrayal of this sad part of getting ready was on point and too real to watch. It brought back so many makeup attempts of our own.
2 Hannah Being Naked ALL THE TIME
At first, Lena Dunham's nudity was a lot of fun to watch. It was weird and uncomfortable, but also normal and natural. But, then it got to be too much. Because, how normal and natural is it to be naked, like, all the time? Spoiler alert, it's not natural to be naked all day, every day. No normal girl is naked as often as Hannah was on Girls. I mean, I appreciate being naked for a while after a shower or something, but chillin' topless isn't something I often do. In season six, we were even treated to naked pregnant Hannah. Hannah was simply TOO naked, guys.
Of course, you have to respect Lena Dunham for putting herself out there. It was a brave thing to do for the narrative for wanted to tell but, unfortunately, that narrative veered into the realm of being unrealistic. The unrealistic nudity was just too much to handle.
1 Hannah's Attitude At Iowa
Watching Hannah at the Iowa Writer's Workshop was painful. In fact, may have been some of Hannah's most painful - and most disgusting - moments in the series.
In season four, we see Hannah in the Iowa Writer's Workshop, which is the best Creative Writing MFA program in the United States. So, that's a pretty big deal. You would think Hannah, who is a writer, would be thrilled to be there but it doesn't work out quite that way. Instead of embracing the workshops, Hannah is defensive of her work. Instead of trying to perfect her craft, she is stubborn. Instead of trying to grow as a person and a writer, she shrinks. All this time we had been rooting on Hannah's writing career and then we see that Hannah herself doesn't want to make herself a better writer.
It all worked out in the end, but the fact that Hannah's narrow-mindedness keeps her from improving her craft is just mind-numbing in terms of awfulness. She may have been nude 90% of the time, but this was Hannah's most disgusting moment on Girls.
