16 Worst Beauty Mistakes That Will Turn Him Off
We have some bad news ladies - guys won't always be open and honest about which beauty mistakes are his biggest turn offs. Well, at least not to your face, as studies that have quizzed men about what drives them wild and what encourages them to drive away has proven they do have serious preferences.
In a study for beauty brand St Ives, as reported by the Daily Mail, they found one in ten women wear makeup to impress a guy with 1 in every 2 women confessing to applying makeup up to 1,500 times a year on average. But it might be easier to ditch the makeup and go all natural as a spokesperson for the beauty brand revealed, "For many guys, makeup can act as a barrier between them and their partner, and it seems they simply prefer their women to go natural. But it's interesting to see that the majority of men were reluctant to admit this to their partner."
Here we look at which are the worst beauty mistakes you can make - according to the guys who have been asked to confess all and tell the truth.
16 Bats**t Crazy Eyebrows
Let's face it - our eyebrows are very important to us. A study reported by the Clinical Plastic Surgery Journal found that cosmetic surgery for eyebrows has been on the rise, as they wrote "Given their importance in facial aesthetics and emotional expression, it is not surprising that women have sought ways to change the appearance of their eyebrows the better to project youth, beauty, and energy."
The only issue is if these brows go wrong. Your brows should suit the shape of your face and there are many charts online that show which is the best fit for you. The last thing you want is to distract a guy with "permanently alarmed" or "barely there" brows. It's something the eye can not distract itself from and he won't be able to stop staring at you and we don't mean in a good way.
15 Too Much Fake And Bake
Fake tan, when done right, can leave you looking healthier, slimmer and more attractive overall - but when done wrong, it can spell disaster. Research carried out by dating website Flirt found that men are massively turned off by too much fake tan. 35% per cent of men said they would not a girl who had orange skin - which is reasonable we guess.
To glow a nice bronze instead of orange then make sure you're splashing out on a decent product - paying that little extra will always be worth it. Beauty experts also recommend prepping the skin before you apply the tan - make sure you exfoliate and remove any dead skin as this can also play havoc with your fake tan. You'll know you've done it right when he can't keep his hands off you.
14 Yellow/ Brown Stained Teeth
A social experiment carried out by the popular dating app Plenty of Fish found that 60% of people would not date someone who had stained teeth (or even approach them in the first place!). They created dating profiles that had identical settings - however, they changed the photographs and the profile with the stained teeth showed a significant drop in private messages. The "bad teeth" profile received just 19 matches whereas the "good teeth" profile received more than 1000.
There are some simple yet effective ways to avoid teeth staining. Avoiding coffee, tea, red wine, colorful sports drinks, hard candy, berries and tomato sauce really helps as these are all foods that can discolor. Another tip is to use a straw for drinking as this prevents any dyes in the drink from getting to your teeth.
13 Overpowering Perfume
Sure everyone loves having their own "signature scent" and wearing the right perfume that compliments you can be a huge turn on. However, if you take it too far and turn up for a date like you've just knocked over an entire perfume stand at the department store then this can have the opposite effect. Nothing says "there won't be a second date" quite like leaving him with an allergic reaction or a migraine.
If you're left wondering just how much is too much then take this advice from the LifeHacker website: "Put on your perfume, wait five seconds, then put a tissue on that spot. The tissue shouldn't stick. Time can help remedy the situation, but a quicker way to cut down on the odor is to put rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and apply that on the areas where you put the fragrance."
12 Sticky or ? Lips
We all want our lips to appear plump, shiny and kissable on a date but your date might not be too pleased when he is left wearing your lip gloss too. There is nothing worse than your favorite lip gloss reaching that point where it just becomes too sticky but we refuse to let go and throw it out. Here are a few tricks to help tone down the stickiness…
Use a wet toothbrush and brush this across your lips to remove any dead skin (see it as exfoliating before you apply), then after you have applied the lip gloss - run an ice cube along your lips, this will then smooth out the gloss and get rid of any extra "gloop." Alternatively, try to avoid budget brands as these won't always keep well in the makeup bag over time.
11 Tattooed Lip Liner
Let's all just be honest here for a second - lip liner when not done properly looks ridiculous. Shockingly some people even took this trend as far as actually tattooing the horror onto their faces - which is okay, but when it's so obvious all people can see is your heavily outlined lips coming through the door before yourself then it's not so cool. Distinctive makeup has been a proven turn off for guys as the majority prefer the natural look instead of "beauty by a procedure."
If permanent lip liner is something you can't live without, then take the advice of Amy Kernhan, a beauty expert and permanent-makeup artist in New York City, she told Allure, "If someone comes in and says, 'I love my color; I just want it to be a hint more,' they're probably going to have to come in once a year for touch-ups to refresh that color. (She would) suggest tattooing your lips one or two shades darker or brighter depending on your natural skin tone."
10 Dark, Racoon Eyes
The smokey trend doesn't seem to be dying out anytime soon which is bad news for guys as they see it as a major turn off. It starts out innocently enough, we apply a couple of layers then believe it's not enough, so apply more and more until the entire eye resembles a panda. Sure in our heads we think this makes us look sultry however it actually makes your eyes look more piercing and menacing than usual - basically, it's quite scary.
Makeup.com asked guys what they thought of the look and one replied, "My girlfriend wears dark eye makeup sometimes and I want to say I feel like that's maybe more formal? Like, if you're just at the mall, that's like some weird gothic type stuff, but if you're like at a really nice restaurant or something, then maybe it's tight." This is one trend that should have stayed in 2015 when it first became popular.
9 Overloaded Lashes
Bad news ladies - guys just "don't get" spider lashes. We know they make you look Instagram ready as hell but seeing these beasts in real life can take someone by surprise. What might look like "not enough" to us can appear "too much" to another person and as your date will be looking lovingly into your eyes - they will likely be the first to notice the mascara overload.
Celebrity makeup artist Marina Gravini told The Fashion Spot, "Usually, when you get spidery eyelashes, it's because you have an old mascara or you're putting on too many coats. If you've already attained the dreaded spider lash, put a drop of water on your mascara wand and put it back into your mascara. The formula should now be thin enough for you to pick through your lashes and fix it."
8 Dehydrated Skin
Imagine getting down to caressing someone you really like and just feeling dry, cracked or flaky skin - it's enough to completely ruin the moment. According to research from University College London, scientists say touching the skin of someone softer than yourself helps enhance sexual relationships. To cut a long science short - it's to do with cuddling babies and bonding as a social unit.
Many of us either suffer with or have suffered from dry skin but there are some simple and natural remedies out there to put this to an end. When drinking alcohol, try one glass of water with every beverage, as alcohol drains your kidneys or water it takes the supply from elsewhere in your body leaving you dried out. Also keeping air conditioning to a minimum helps your skin hydrated and soft to touch.
7 Hiding Your Face
Sure wearing a huge sun hat and sunglasses might make you look like a movie star, but when it comes to the dating game it's better not to show up looking like yourself. After all, it's very unlikely you'll have the paparazzi trailing you to the restaurant. Wearing less to disguise your face will help you become more open and engaging when you meet together.
The reason why this turns off guys so much is that he wants to see the real you. If you think of this scenario in reverse, imagine how odd it would be for your him to show up refusing to remove his hat and big sunnies. You'll likely be sat there the whole time wondering what he's got to hide or why he's doubling up as a secret agent.
6 Hair Pieces
Hair extensions can work as a confidence enhancing tool for us ladies - we can channel our inner Beyonce just by adding a few more locks to our powerful manes. There are some trends, however, that send guys running for the hills and as a general rule - the more bizarre, unnatural and superficial the more this turns them off.
During a Reddit Q&A, one Redditor asked guys what they really thought of fake extensions. One replied, "If they're done well then the chances are I wouldn't even notice them. But, much like fake nails, when they're bad, they're very bad" and another added, "I don't even like it when a woman wears a lot of makeup. Extensions feel like a huge lie (with the exception of somebody using them on a very rare occasion to try to go for a certain "look" for a special occasion)." Better to keep it natural, ladies.
5 Bright Lipstick
Bright neon lipstick is a huge no-no for guys when it comes to dating and that's simply because it's very distracting from the rest of your face. His eyes will be instantly drawn to your bright lips and he'll struggle to concentrate on anything else - but not in a good way either. Bright neons or any unusual color is usually a big turn off for him so remember to avoid these.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't opt to wear any lipstick at all. In a 2012 study, they found that waitresses who wore a nice shade of red lipstick received more tips from guys and other women who receive a "prolonged gaze" from guys. So it's a just a matter of picking the right shade really.
4 Layered On Makeup
It's the life long question - what do men really prefer: the natural look or makeup? Is it really worth spending that many hours in front of the mirror if it actually doesn't make us more desirable at all? Well, Shape magazine interviewed many guys about their preferences and it turns out that heavy makeup is actually a huge turnoff.
One said, "Less is more. Definitely. You don't want to overdo it. If you don't exude beauty from within, no amount of makeup will be able to cover that up" and another added, "I think a lot of makeup actually makes women look worse. Have you ever noticed how the women look on the final episode of Survivor, when they're back from the island and finally get all made up? They go from being naturally beautiful individuals to sort of generically pretty." Better to keep it as natural as possible ladies.
3 Too Much Hairspray
Hairspray is a girl's best friend, there's no denying that, but often that best friend can stab you in the back. The bad news is ladies - it's not the 90s anymore and the hairspray trend is actually dying out. Guys prefer hair that not fixed in place so it swishes as you move making you look like a feminine goddess. Also, they want to run their hands lovingly through your hair but that's not going to be possible if your hair has the texture of a brick wall.
Another thing to keep in mind is if you ditch the hairspray for good you're also saving the environment.According to the Environment Protection Agency, cans of hairspray have been attacking the ozone layers since the 1970s - just something to keep in mind next time you're beautifying yourself.
2 Applying Makeup In Public
We've all been there when you're in the middle of a date and catch sight of yourself in the mirror then believe it's time to top up on makeup. Public grooming is a huge turn off for guys, so as tempting as it might be to pull out the compact and reapply - just save it for the bathroom, ladies. Your date might not be too pleased with the distraction as powder gets everywhere and he's not getting your sole attention.
Another problem with applying in public is cross-contamination and the spreading of germs. Dr. Susan Blakeney, a clinical adviser to the College of Optometrists, told The Telegraph that applying makeup in public, ignoring the important hand washing part beforehand, can lead to "unpleasant infections." She added, "The modern-day phenomenon of applying makeup on the journey to work undoubtedly increases the risk of scratching your cornea." So take care of your own peepers!
1 Fake Nails
According to several guys during a Reddit Q&A about beauty turn offs, they generally found fake nails "creepy", "disgusting" and "horrible." Yes, they certainly weren't holding back when it came to discussing what their preferences were. One anonymous Redditor said, "Several of my coworkers have acrylic nails and at first just looking at them creeped me out. I learned to ignore them (the nails, not the coworkers) but it still takes an effort at dinner time."
Another said, "Fake nails are also a turn off for me. They are terrifying in a sexual encounter and they look bad in general. Nail polish though? I don't care. Unless it's pink or an equally horrid color" before another added, "I can't understand for the life of me how those women think those long fake nails are attractive in any way. They are absolutely disgusting and horrible." Better to be all natural than creepy if you ask us.
