7 Reasons To Hate Demi Lovato And 8 Reasons To Love Her

Like a lot of celebrities, Demi Lovato is kind of a controversial figure. Sure, she has done a lot of good for the world -- she is a mental health advocate thanks to her own struggles, she is a feminist, and she has released a lot of really fun (and inspiring) pop songs. On the other hand, she seems to make things a lot more complicated and difficult than they need to be in terms of her romantic relationships and famous friendships. We may not know her personally so sometimes it can be hard to know what she is really like, but hey, she has chosen to live her life in the public eye and so we say that she is totally and completely fair game, like every other celebrity.

Here are 7 reasons to hate Demi Lovato and 8 reasons to love her. What side do you stand on?

15 Hate: She Might Lip Sync At The Grammys

People were spectating that Demi Lovato might actually lip sync at the 2017 Grammys on February 12th. Sure, lots of other singers lip sync or have been accused of lip syncing, so it's not like she has been singled out. But this accusation alone is enough to kind of hate her, right? It's kind of ridiculous how many celebrities think that they can just waltz through life and get absolutely handed to him. We hope that's not what she's like and how she thinks, but since we don't know her, we can't really say for sure. We hope that she chose not to lip sync but will we ever know. We definitely would hate her if she does lip sync, though, since come on. It can't be that hard to actually sing at an awards show if you're a singer. That's your job. What, you can't do your job? That's all kinds of awful and we wouldn't be cool with it.

14 Love: She Is A Mental Health Advocate

In 2010, Demi Lovato checked into rehab and everyone realized that she had been suffering for quite a long time. What we LOVE about Demi is that she is a mental health advocate. She speaks out about her own struggles and experiences and tries to help others who are going through the same thing or at least similar stuff. We can't find any fault with that since it's always amazing when someone has been through something and can be a force for good. Her story is super inspiring since she has not let it get her down. Instead, she is back and better than ever. She has not only had an eating disorder and suffered from depression but has also suffered from drug and alcohol abuse and self-harm. It's a long list and would probably make most people want to give up, but not Demi. We really respect her for that.

13 Hate: She Loathes Taylor Swift

Sure, we don't always LOVE T-Swift. It's no secret that she's become more than a little annoying and frustrating in the past year or so. She's got a weird girl squad that seems to exclude others more than anything else, she only seems to have super famous friends, and oh yeah, there's that dating thing she does (aka when she dates guys for a hot second and then it's all over). Apparently, Demi and Taylor were once best friends but now Demi hates her. We're just not sure why. Shouldn't women be friendly, if not friends? Especially if they're in the same industry? We would think that they would be so close, they would basically be sisters since they've gone through the same things and had similar experiences. Taylor was once so sweet to Demi, she even supported her when she went to rehab a few years ago, but apparently, that's all over and the two don't even speak. We don't get it.

12 Love: She Cares About LGBTQ Rights

Another thing that we definitely love about Demi Lovato is that she only cares about mental health issues but she is also a big supporter of gay rights. When the recent "bathroom law" was a huge controversy in North Carolina, Demi and Nick Jonas were going to perform there together, and they both decided that they could not possibly perform after all. She always wants to stand up for what is right and for what she believes in and that is really something to respect and admire. When Demi performed at the Billboard awards in May of 2016, she even took another stand about this bathroom law and wore a t-shirt that had the symbol for a bathroom that can be used by both males and females. She even reportedly sold those t-shirts and was going to give the money to GLAAD. Which is also super great. At least we love her for this!

11 Hate: She Loathes Selena Gomez Too

Does Demi Lovato like anyone!? Apparently not. According to reports circulating online, Demi is not a fan of Selena Gomez and claims that she was a really horrible friend to her. Okay, so we don't know exactly what went down and we don't know what kind of friend either one of these girls are. But we have to say that we hate Demi for this feud for the same reason that we hate that she's not BFFs with Taylor Swift anymore. It just doesn't make any sense for these famous females to not be friends. They need to stand together and support each other. There are just so many people who want to take you down when you're a young female in the music industry, and it seems crazy not to want to create an actually good girl squad out of amazing musicians. Come on Taylor, invite Demi into your girl squad and let's stop this.

10 Love: She Creates Awesome Music

Let's just be real here: we love that Demi Lovato is a really fun singer. She's got a beautiful voice and it lends itself to both gorgeous ballads and faster pop songs. We love her tunes like "Cool For The Summer" and "Heart Attack" and we're not afraid to admit it. We also love that she seems like a cool and also totally real and raw person. It's rare that a singer or actress or performer of some kind is both a legit person and also great at doing what they do, so we do have to give her major props for that. Sure, she has her faults and we've gone through them above, but that doesn't mean that we don't like some aspects of her personality as well. No one is perfect and Demi definitely isn't, so it makes sense that we wouldn't love absolutely everything about her. As long as she keeps making such amazing music, we're going to keep listening to it.

9 Hate: She Dated A Way Older Guy

Of course, it seems like those in Hollywood have a totally different approach to dating, love, romance, and relationships than the rest of us. Celebrities seem to date a different person every month (or even every week or every day) and they never seem to need any time to move on from a bad break-up. While we're face deep in a pizza or pint of ice cream, famous people are already figuring out their next move (and who they're going to be in love with next). But the awkward AF thing about Demi Lovato is that she dated Wilmer Valderrama. They were in a super long-term and serious relationship for six whole years, and when they broke up in 2016, she was 23 and he was 36. Which means that she was probably 17 when they first got together and he was 30. Yup, really. That's a huge age difference… Sorry Demi, we don't love you for that. We think you could have waited a year to date this guy and make things public.

8 Love: She Once Had Blue Hair

Back in 2014, Demi Lovato dyed her hair blue and we think it was pretty awesome. Okay, it was totally awesome. For a while there, she was dyeing her hair pretty much ever color of the rainbow, and blue is our favorite. We think that it takes a certain kind of bada** woman to dye her hair blue. It's bold, it's kind of shocking, and it proves that she doesn't care what other people think. She wants to have fun and do what she wants. What's more, she looks totally awesome with blue hair. We can't think of many other singers or actresses who would have the guts to dye their hair blue or who would even look so good with blue hair. It's definitely a super small list. Sure, she seems to be sticking to normal colors like her typical dark brown/almost black hair these days, but we're going to keep hoping that she will go back to the blue. It's just too cool and too amazing for her never to do that again.

7 Hate: She Dates Like T-Swift

Well, maybe she's sometimes single and doesn't date up a storm the way that the famous singer/songwriter does. But Demi Lovato once dated Joe Jonas, who famously dated T-Swift (and dumped her in a voicemail -- OUCH). We think it's kind of ridiculous that Demi is such a hypocrite that she would diss Taylor everywhere and anywhere that she can… and yet live in a similar way to her. Seriously, what's her deal? Why does she hate Taylor so much? Her own relationships are just as high-profile and seem just as complicated. Demi only was with Joe Jonas for two months -- yes, TWO MONTHS. Hmmm. We're not sure what happened but one thing is for sure: she can't really complain about other people when she's acting and behaving just like them. We're never going to stop wishing that Demi would stop fighting with all these women who are just like her.

    6 Love: She Gives Back

We love that Demi Lovato isn't just another superficial celebrity who refuses to think about people who are less fortunate than her. In fact, she gives back and she's a huge advocate for the causes that she believes in. She has not only performed at Pride in New York City but she was also the L.A. Pride Parade Grand Marshall. She has been a mentor to young adults who struggle with mental health issues. And she has also spoken out against bullying and been part of a campaign. What's cool about Demi is that she not only believes in doing what is right and standing up for other people and their rights, but she makes sure that she does something about it. She talks the talk and walks the walk, so to speak, and it's super motivating and inspiring. We're sure that she will never stop being an advocate for the things that she cares about.

5 Hate: She Can't Mind Her Own Business

So in case you've been living under a rock, you probably know that Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez aren't exactly the best of friends. In fact, the two of them have been in a kind of public feud forever… except sometimes they diss each other and act like they have never even met or don't even know each other at all. Yeah, it's as immature and awkward AF as it sounds. When a fan posted something on social media about Mariah Carey, Demi Lovato decided to speak her mind. She said, “Mariah is a legend and is so talented but constantly disses people. It's nasty the way she treats Jennifer [Lopez]." Okay, so maybe it IS kind of nasty, but was it really Demi's place to say that? No, it definitely wasn't… especially since she has her own famous feuds. Sorry, Demi but you can't mind your own business and sometimes, the best thing to do is stay out of it.

4 Love: She Was On Barney

Yes, really. In fact, Demi Lovato AND Selena Gomez were both on Barney AT THE SAME TIME. Which is another reason that it's super weird that they're not good friends or even any kind of friends anymore. We love that she was on this show because the truth is that we grew up watching it… and our moms were super annoyed about that. We know that adults always find this show hard to take so we do feel kind of guilty about that, even today. The series aired from 1992 until 2009. Demi played the character Angela in seasons seven and eight. So that means that she was on the show in 2002 and 2003. You were probably too old at that point and had long since stopped watching this show, but just know that she was on one of your most beloved children's shows. It's pretty cool. And just look at how adorable she was.

3 Hate: She Always Gets Into Social Media Trouble

There are some celebrities that literally can't tweet, right? They always seem to be saying the wrong thing (or the right thing but the thing that gets them into trouble) and unfortunately, Demi Lovato seems to be one of those people. She complained about Lady Gaga on Twitter and then she apparently fought with Kathy Griffin over a period of several years. If that wasn't bad enough, she even got into it with Nicki Minaj. Again we have to say, Demi, do you not want to be friends with ANY other female musicians?! Do you really want to fight with everyone and have everyone hate you? Because that's totally what you're going to get if you keep doing this. While Demi is definitely not the only famous figure to speak her mind on Twitter and get involved in all kinds of arguments, we have to say that we hate that she does this. We just don't think it's classy for anyone to behave this way on social media.

    2 Love: She's A Feminist

Since there are a TON of female celebrities who claim not to be feminists (we're looking at you, Taylor Swift), we have to love that Demi Lovato calls herself a feminist. We have to admit that it seems kind of strange to be a woman and not say that you're a feminist. How does that even work?! You don't want women to be equal to men? You don't want them to have equal rights and equal pay and all that good stuff? Huh. We're just not sure how that would even work. Some celebs have super weird reasonings for not being feminists -- they claim they are "humanists" and care about guys too (um, being a feminist does not mean that you hate guys, but anyway). But not Demi. Nope, she's a feminist and we love that about her. She's definitely not afraid to talk about issues that matter to her so it's really not a surprise that this is how she feels.

1 Love: She's Not Afraid To Speak Her Mind

We love that Demi Lovato is not afraid to speak her mind. Sure, sometimes it gets her into trouble (okay, it gets her into hot water a LOT of the time) and sure, we have said that we hate that she fights with people on social media and doesn't love some of her fellow female musicians. But at the same time, we have to give her major props for speaking her mind and not being scared to tell people what she thinks, what she believes in, and how she feels. At the end of the day, it's awesome if you know who you are and can always stand up for what you believe in. We would love to see her friends with the other pop stars that she no longer seems to talk to, but since we're not friends with her ourselves and can't really tell her that, we're going to focus on the positive stuff about her. And one of the BEST things about her is that she says what she thinks. Keep being you, Demi!
