8 Reasons To Hate 'Santa Clarita Diet' And 7 Reasons To Love It
When you need a good show to curl up with on the weekend, it's pretty clear that you're going to go straight to Netflix. After all, the streaming service is basically your BFF and you couldn't possibly love it any more. You know that it's the place to go for quality TV and that it never, ever lets you down. Sometimes, though, even Netflix-produced shows aren't as good as all the hype behind them, and that can really depress you. Because you want every show on Netflix to be the best one ever. That just seems so important. Of course, nothing is perfect and you're not going to love every show. One of those shows that you might not absolutely adore is Santa Clarita Diet, the new comedy starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant as married couple Sheila and Joel. Read on to find out 8 reasons to hate this show… and 7 reasons to love it. Because you will feel both ways about this series!
15 Hate: It's Pretty Gross
Once you find out the basic premise of this show -- Drew Barrymore's real estate agent character turns into a zombie and starts eating people -- you can pretty much guess that there are going to be gross scenes. How could there not be?! That being said, you're going to hate how disgusting this show can be, and that's the honest truth. It doesn't matter that you don't have a right to be surprised. It doesn't matter that the grossness is kind of obvious based on what the show is about. Nope. None of those things matter. Because you're going to find a lot of this show really, really hard to watch. It's just so realistic and that will really get under your skin. Needless to say, this show is not for the faint of heart, and it's definitely not for people that hate horror movies. So definitely keep that in mind before you tune in.
14 Love: Drew Barrymore Is The Best
Let's hear it for Drew Barrymore. Chances are you love her because how could you not?! She's sweet, she's adorable, and she's always got the best hair ever. She really kills in this role (pun not intended but hey, it works!) and she will make you want to keep watching. She will probably be the reason that you watch this super short season in a matter of hours. Or maybe that's your epic binge-watching ability. If you love this actress and have been wanting to see her in a television show, then this is your chance and you will definitely enjoy the experience. This show will make you wonder why no one had this girl star on TV before. Seriously, what was anyone waiting for? Sure, she's an awesome movie star and all, but she is made for the small screen as well as the big one since she's just so talented.
13 Hate: It's A Super Short Binge Watch
If there's one thing that you love in this world, it's a good binge watch. When you've had a long day at work (or week) and just want to be entertained and chill out, there's nothing like watching several episodes of an amazing show. So the sad part about Santa Clarita Diet is that the first season only has ten episodes. Yes, you read that right. ONLY TEN. Since that makes it a super short binge watch, that's something to hate about it. Okay, okay, so that has literally nothing to do with the quality of the show or how funny it is or the characters or storylines. But it still counts. Because again, you love a good binge watch and it's kind of what you live for. Since you'll probably finish this show in a single day, at least you can find another show to fall in love with, right? It's always possible to look on the bright side.
12 Love: Timothy Olyphant Is Awesome
Timothy Olyphant does an awesome job as Drew Barrymore's husband on this show. On the one hand, he's totally and completely freaked out about the zombie state that his lovely wife is suddenly in. On the other hand, he loves some aspects about it (like the fact that she suddenly can't keep her hands off him… ). You will love watching him get used to his new reality and way of life. He really does an awesome acting job since he nails the whole confused thing really well. Maybe you're already a fan of his, maybe you haven't really seen him in anything, but chances are this show will make him one of your favorite actors. And you will definitely be begging for a second season by the time you get down with your (again) super short binge watch. No, you won't be able to get over the fact that there are only ten episodes.
11 Hate: It Asks You To Believe Something Crazy
The premise of the show is that Drew Barrymore just magically and suddenly turns into a zombie. Which totally happens every single day, right? Something to hate about this show is that it just asks you to believe that this would happen and that it makes sense. It doesn't really explain why or how this happened, it just kind of presents this storyline to you and then goes about its merry way. While that's totally fine since it's not like you have to only watch realistic entertainment, it can get a bit frustrating after the first few episodes. Since there will most likely be a second season (hello Drew Barrymore!), you can only hope that there is a bit more explanation then. And maybe if a renewal had already been announced then you would feel more comfortable watching since you would know that maybe there would be some answers in the future.
10 Love: It Keeps You Guessing
Do you think you know everything that's going to happen on a comedy series about a woman who turns into a zombie and has to get used to her new life? Really? Then you're a.) a psychic or b.) totally lying. If there's one thing that you should definitely love about this show, it's the fact that it totally keeps guessing. It's fun, fresh, unique, and unpredictable. You will want to keep watching thanks to the sheer fact that you just won't know what will happen next. There's something to be said for that in today's crowded television landscape, right? How often do you sit down to watch a series and get super surprised? Yeah, exactly. Props to the writers and producers for that because it's really refreshing and impressive. So go ahead and watch -- you won't have a clue what's going to happen next and you will love that.
9 Hate: It Tries Hard
Sometimes you watch something where it just seems like it's trying really hard to be good and impress you, and often, that something is a comedy. It could be a comedic film or a sitcom, but when humor is involved, this just tends to happen. If you tune into this show, you will notice pretty quickly that it's trying really hard to impress you. It's like when your boyfriend meets your parents for the very first time and is on his very best behavior and starts talking about things that you've never even heard him chat about before because he just wants them to adore him. Yeah, it's kind of like that. So if you're okay with a show that really wants your positive approval, then sure, go ahead and watch. But you might want the show to feel a bit more natural in tone after the first few episodes and you wouldn't be alone there.
8 Love: It's Kind Of Sweet
In its own unique way, this show is kind of sweet. Just think about this for a second. It's about a husband who is totally cool with his wife turning into a zombie. Okay, not TOTALLY cool, but he gets on board pretty quickly. He honestly cares about her and wants to help her with her transition and new life. Would most guys do that? Probably not. They would probably run far, far away. So when you watch Timothy's character help Drew bury a body, for example, you will find it kind of sweet and endearing. And then you will wonder why you think that way because when did burying a body become sweet and endearing?! Yeah, this show will make you think for sure. But they do make a cute married couple and that's something that you will love about the show (even if there are still things that you don't love about it).
7 Hate: It's About Suburbia
Are you sick and tired of watching TV shows and movies set in picture perfect suburbia? If you are, then you might not love this show, and this might just be something that you totally hate about it. The truth is that at this point, the suburbs have been a part of TV shows since forever, and it's hard to have a unique spin on it. Sure, the premise of this show is plenty unique, and you won't necessarily feel like you've seen it before, but it can be frustrating to keep staring at the suburbs. Because let's face it: the suburbs aren't that exciting. In fact, they're totally boring. So no matter how many television shows try to bring some mystery and suspense to this type of setting, you end up staring at house upon house that all look the same, and it gets to be a bit much. It might have been more interesting if the show had been set somewhere else -- like a big city.
6 Love: It's Campy
Of course a zombie show SHOULD be campy. That doesn't always mean that it will be campy. Think about the best horror movies (as in the worst). Those are always super campy in tone. If you're a horror movie fan, then this show will be right up your alley since it feels like the best parts of a good scary flick. It's terrifying in some ways and silly and funny in others, and that mix of scares and light-heartedness is really great. This show is a great example of how creating a campy tone and feel is difficult to do because not everyone can actually pull it off, but when it works, it works. And it's the best. You will cheer for Drew Barrymore's character, wanting her to thrive and succeed (even if that means she's going to be a zombie forever and get used to eating people… ) and you will be a fan of the campy tone too.
5 Hate: You Will Lose Your Appetite
If you're used to curling up on the couch and watching Netflix while eating your fave junk food, think again -- at least when it comes to this show. You will seriously LOSE your appetite and you might not ever want to eat again. Think that's a joke? Nope, it's not. If you're a foodie (and you probably are), then that's not great news. As already established, this show has its moments that are truly gross, and so you won't want to even think about food (or even smell it) for a while when you tune into this series. Then there's the fact that Drew Barrymore literally eats a.) raw meat (as in raw ground beef… yes, really) and b.) people. Yes, she eats people. As in body parts. Is your stomach rumbling yet? No? Really, why not? Of course a show about someone who becomes a zombie and eats human beings is going to be kind of disgusting, so that's just something that you have to accept.
4 Love: It's Set In California
Oh California. If you live in that beautiful state, you are super lucky. If you don't, you will probably watch this and be super jealous of the gorgeous landscapes and all that nature… but you will still love that this comedy is set in California. Because hey, you get to live vicariously and pretend you live in a place that is hot all the time and that this thing called winter doesn't exist. Well, it still exists, but it's not like you have to get out your snow tires and boots and shovels and the hat that makes you look horrible but keeps you warm if you live in California. Those things just aren't part of your vocabulary. If you're looking for a show that has a beautiful and peaceful setting, then this is totally your show and you will love it. Since the main characters are also real estate agents, you'll get to look at some huge houses too, and that's always great (since of course, you can't afford those either… ).
3 Hate: Critics Hate It
It's not like you can't like a show or even adore it if critics hate it. You are your own person with your own mind and your own likes and dislikes. It's just that when critics don't like a show and you're deciding whether or not you want to watch it, let alone even enjoy it, it can kind of ruin your whole vibe. You start thinking that you shouldn't waste your time watching the show, even if you do kind of enjoy it, and you start spiraling out of control and wondering why you even like it. Okay, maybe that's kind of dramatic, but you're dramatic about your television shows. You just are. It's a fact of life. So if there's another thing that you could hate about this show, it's that critics aren't big fans. You might also find that your friends and family aren't super into the idea of tuning in since they might have read bad reviews or felt that the show was just too gross for them to give it the time of day.
2 Hate: It Could Be A Lot Funnier
The thing about a comedy is that, well, it has to be absolutely HILARIOUS or it doesn't really live up to its genre. This show is funny. It is. It's got zombie humor and Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant and some really wacky and unique dialogue and situations. But… it could be a lot funnier. And by the time you have watched a few episodes, you will find yourself thinking that over and over again. So that's something to hate about the show, even if you do get into it and find that you really like it. You will keep hoping that the jokes get just 10 percent funnier and that you will laugh out loud when you're watching, but that will probably not happen. It's okay though. Just enjoy it. Because there are still some things to love about this Netflix show. It's all about balance in life, right?
1 Love: It's On Netflix
The number one reason to love Santa Clarita Diet? That it is on Netflix, of course! You know that one was coming, right? Netflix totally completes your world. It is just the best. When you have had a long day, when you are exhausted, when you are sick, when you are relaxing, when anything and everything is going on, you know that you can turn on Netflix and be transported to a magical place. So since this show is on Netflix, you know that it's not completely horrible. There's no way that it could be. Your favorite streaming service would never, ever let you down. So while there are things to hate about this show, there are things to love about it too, and that just proves that nothing is perfect in this world. This show may have its downsides but it's still worth checking out. So get ready for your next binge.
