8 Things You Love About Grey's Anatomy And 7 Things You Hate
There are probably more polarizing shows than Grey's Anatomy… but you can't really think of any. You may still be watching even if you agree with critics and fans that the show is a lot different from its early and original glory days, or maybe you still 100 percent believe it is amazing. No judgment here. But even if you're the biggest super fan there ever was, you have to admit that there are some things to love about Grey's and some things that you just have to hate. You can't help it. No show is perfect but this one definitely has its issues. You hate admitting that because you've been watching it since it first debuted back in 2005 and it's been a really long road (both for you and for your beloved characters) but the truth is the truth. And the truth is that the series has more than a few flaws. Here are 8 things you love about Grey's Anatomy… and 7 things that you can't help but totally hate.
15 Love: Meredith Grey
No doubt about it, you LOVE Meredith Grey. How could you not?! She is your TV best friend, your sister, and your motivation to get through the dark days and tough times. After all, if Meredith has survived something, then you can too. And since you definitely have never gone through anything that she has because let's be real, she has gone through the worst stuff that anyone could, you really can get through whatever you're dealing with. You honestly can. Your problems feel like super small potatoes compared to her stuff. You are really attached to Meredith since you have been watching her for so long and you really root for her. It doesn't matter what she's going through, you always take her side just like you would if she was your real life BFF. And in your mind, she totally is. You don't want to hear that she's not real. She is to you.
14 Hate: DEREK DYING
Sorry but the caps are totally necessary. You're still that upset about it. You can't even believe that this show would kill Derek. Okay, so you get that it was time for the man behind McDreamy to leave for many reasons, but that doesn't mean that you have to be okay with it. You're not and you're never going to be. It's basically impossible to even think about Grey's Anatomy without thinking about how devastated you are that Derek died. You can't even with the idea that Meredith would ever move on totally or date someone else, and you have hated watching her with other guys. Yeah, you get that time has passed and just because she might possibly entertain the idea of dating someone else, that doesn't mean that she would forget about Derek. And you don't want her to be miserable forever. But still… you can't get over him and you're not sure that she should be able to, either. It's hard for you to wrap your mind around.
13 Love: Meredith And Cristina's BFF-Ship
This is the best friendship to end all best friendships. It's absolutely awesome, inspiring, and beautiful. Well, at least it was, but you're going to ignore the fact that Cristina is not on the show anymore and that you never, ever hear about her. Seriously, would it kill the characters to reference her every once in a while?! You look back on the days of Meredith and Cristina super fondly. It's almost like they are real memories for you. You loved how they would dance it out when they were dealing with something and you tried to get your own real life BFF to do that too but she told you to stop copying Grey's Anatomy. So you stopped talking to her. Just joking. But you kind of wanted to. This friendship is undeniably one of the best things about the show and nothing else really comes close. You just adore these two.
12 Hate: Callie Leaving
You miss Callie so much more than you ever would have expected. After all, she was never exactly a main character. You love her and Arizona and since the reason that she's off the show is because this glorious couple broke up and she's got a new girlfriend, you have to admit that you miss her. You just don't get why that had to happen. Hopefully there is still a chance for the two of them and this wrong can be made right in the future. You are holding onto that hope and you will never, ever let it go. There really is a hole in the hospital where Callie used to be and you don't think that the other doctors can make up for this loss because Callie was just so totally hilarious. She had a real spunk to her and it's definitely needed since the hospital is usually such a serious place. Oh Callie. Why can't you come back?!
11 Love: The Original Interns
Izzie. Alex. George. Meredith. Cristina. These are the OG Grey's Anatomy interns and they were the greatest characters ever. They were sweet, smart, funny, fun, and adorable. You were charmed by every scene and you thought this was pretty much the holy grail of television. Sadly, they are not all on the show anymore, and only two original interns (Meredith and Alex) are left. But your hear hurts when you think about that so you are going to ignore it and move on. Back to the interns. You loved that Izzie was in love with George and George was in love with Meredith and there was all this romantic tension and conflict but everyone was still the best of friends. And it was awesome when everyone lived together in Meredith's house. You almost wished you lived with them too. Yup, those were the good old days, and you remember them super fondly.
10 Hate: The New Interns
You don't even know the names of the new interns. And you're a huge fan. So that's saying something, right? You just don't know why there even had to be new interns last season. They definitely didn't make a huge impression on you… or any impression at all. You miss the original interns though so you believe that any new intern would only pale in comparison. It's all kind of doomed from the start. Sometimes it's hard to tell the interns from the residents apart since it seems like you're an intern forever before you're a real doctor, but when you're an intern you can perform surgery. So really, you're a real doctor the second you get to the hospital. Or maybe you're totally wrong. Who knows? You're not the expert here. You just watch a medical show. It's not like you really understand the surgery lingo or anything that they are talking about.
9 Love: The Adorable Richard
Is there a more adorable character than Richard? Definitely not. He is just the best. He is funnier than he thinks (and that is always the hallmark of a hilarious person) and he has survived a lot in his life which makes him a very inspiring person. Plus it is just plain fun to watch him totally confused by the younger doctors and their crazy dating lives and hook-ups. Sometimes he tries to be cool like when he heads to Joe's bar and tries to help them pick up people and he is honestly at his best when he is doing that. You love that he is essentially a father figure for Meredith, whether or not she would ever admit that (you are not really sure where she would stand on that subject). And you definitely love that he is with Catherine, Jackson's mom because those two are the most charming and sweetest couple ever.
8 Hate: Jo And Alex's Break-Up
This was the worst break-up on the show. Yes, worse than April and Jackson. Yup, that is your story and you are sticking to it. The thing about Jo and Alex is they are completely made for each other since they each had a sad childhood that really bonded them and brought them together. They seem to really get each other and they bring out the best in each other. Both of them are very vulnerable and kind of cold but they seem much happier and nicer when they are together. You hate seeing them apart and you definitely hate seeing Jo go through something terrible, especially without her dreamy and sweet boyfriend by her side. You absolutely believe that the game plan is for them to kiss and make up because you can't even imagine a world without them as a couple. It is just unimaginable. You really do hate this.
7 Love: The Crazy Storylines
The storylines aren't quite as nuts as they once were, but back in the day, aka the first three seasons or so, things were crazy. Kyle Chandler was in the famous bomb episode and that was a crazy one for sure. You just couldn't look away from your screen and couldn't believe that watching TV could be so much fun. And remember when Izzie was in love with Denny… the patient who became a ghost?! OMG. That was the best thing ever. You normally would be annoyed by a storyline like that because you could swear that it was not realistic but for whatever reason, you were okay with it. It just seemed to make sense and it seemed to work. You wish that Denny could have stayed on the show forever but sadly, you can't have everything, and he had to leave. You still tune in for the insane storylines and that won't ever change.
6 Hate: All The Deaths
You can't even believe all the characters that have died on this show. Sure, some of them made sense but you still mourned them like you had lost your very own friends or family members. Take Lexie and Mark, for example. They FINALLY seemed like they were in love and ready to be together… and then they passed away in the worst way possible. It was just so unfair and you never got over it. Sometimes so many characters have died, you even forget about it, like Jackson's BFF Charles. Then you remember and get super sad all over again since it just reminds you of how many lovely characters have gone into that great big place in the sky. You know that the show has a lot of deaths because it's super dramatic and intense, but you still aren't okay with it. So you better not have to say goodbye to any more of your favorite characters.
5 Love: Shondaland
You LOVE Shonda Rhimes aka the creator and showrunner of Grey's Anatomy. She is a super inspiring person and it's super cool that at one time, she had THREE shows on the air on Thursday evenings. So awesome. You are always behind her 100 percent and even when other people say that you should stop watching this show because it's been on the air way too long and the quality has gone way down, you shrug them off. Haters gonna hate, right? You don't care what they say. You love Shonda Rhimes and you love this show and that's just the way that it's going to be. Even if there are some storylines that you're not a huge fan of, you know that Shonda knows what she's doing. You believe in her and you trust her and you know that things will always turn around. It's what keeps you watching.
4 Hate: The Unrealistic Plotlines
You just have to be honest here: the reason why a lot of people aren't into the show anymore is because of the unrealistic plotlines, and you agree with them. You just have to. You don't think that you're betraying the show by saying this because the truth is that you could say this about literally any show. It's impossible for a series to be on the air for 13 seasons and have every single episode be absolutely incredible and perfect and logical. That's just not a thing. The show is always good, you do believe that, but it was a lot more reasonable and rational back in the early seasons. But maybe that happens on every dramatic show, right? It's not like you love everything you see on any other show that you love and consider one of your favorites. So you don't feel guilty for saying this. Okay, you feel a little guilty, but you can deal.
3 Love: The Voiceovers
Oh, the voiceovers. You can't even express your love for them. They are just so awesome. If you did not have Meredith's calm and smart voice telling you about life and love at the beginning and end of every single episode, the viewing experience would be super different. You can't even imagine Grey's Anatomy without those voiceovers, but hey, thankfully you do not have to since they are a total staple of the show. You especially love how Meredith makes a lot of medical analogies. Her words are just super motivating and inspiring for you and they make you feel instantly better. It is kind of like being in a therapist's office. You are really glad that this creative decision was made because it really makes the show special and you look forward to hearing what new philosophical thing Meredith has to say every week. And if for some reason you don't catch it, you make sure you rewind to listen to it again.
2 Love: The Character Development
Look, a lot of people might laugh that you're talking about the awesome character development on Grey's Anatomy because it's thought to be a total soap opera. But you believe the characters have grown a lot and you love the character arcs. Just look at April, for example. She was a super religious person when she first came on the show and she had never slept with anyone. But soon, she was in love with Jackson and came out of her shell a lot. Now she's pretty much unrecognizable from the person that she was. Cristina really comes into her own and becomes totally okay with being exactly who she is, no matter what other people think about her. Meredith has really become less dark and twisty as time goes on and seems a lot sweeter and softer than she was in the first season. And Alex? Oh man, Alex has become so much better. He's a legit guy now and he's really nice. You never saw that coming.
1 Hate: How Long It's Been On The Air
You don't hate that it's been on the air forever (or for 13 seasons, to be exact) in the sense that you still enjoy watching it and would be super sad if it was canceled (which probably won't happen for a while because Shondaland). You hate that it's such a long-running show because everyone else won't shut up about it. You have to defend your undying love for this show and you think hat's really unfair. You don't make your friends defend their own favorite shows that you have stopped watching, but somehow, they just won't pay you the same respect. You're sick of saying that yes, you get that it's not like the first few seasons, and yes, amazing characters are gone and there are some random new characters that you don't love quite as much. But at the end of the day, you're still a fan and you're going to keep watching until the very end.
