8 Things You Loved About Gossip Girl And 7 Things You Hated
Gossip Girl is a super iconic show for millennials, and its fans still worship the show even though it has been off the air for a while now. Throughout its six seasons, there were wild plots and dramatic storylines galore, from Chuck's long lost mother resurfacing to Gossip Girl unleashing hell on the characters and Serena doing drugs. The infamously popular show was fearless when it came to throwing a few curveballs at you, but not all of schemes were received positively. It definitely had some WTF moments that made you question where the show was going. And even how they thought viewers would buy most of the things that went on. While we know there were some glorious moments you'll hold dear to your heart forever, we also know there were some scenes you wish you could cleanse from your memory forever. Here are eight things you loved about Gossip Girl and seven you totally hated.
15 Loved: The Upper East Side
This area of New York City is one that only the elite will ever know. While it gave us the insider look we always wanted, the thing is that Blair's cruelty was no joke or fabricated storyline. Apparently, the producers interviewed real residents of the Upper East Side and learned that much of their lifestyle is filled with fashion and drama and all kinds of conflict. So, naturally, they put that into the show, and we have them to thank because we really thought this was fun. Everyone has always dreamed of what it's like to be so rich you have no concept of money, which was one of the biggest divides between the Humphreys and everyone else. From the mansions to the dresses that cost thousands of dollars and all the insanity that only the wealthiest in the world will know, we really did love peeking into the lives of the rich and fabulous.
14 Loved: Serena And Blair's Friendship
There were few relationships that were as up and down as Blair and Serena's, even though. These girls had a cat fight at Yale but defended each other no matter what the cost against Georgina Sparks. But it was their happy moments that we loved the most. While their lows were certainly entertaining as Blair often bested Serena when it came to scheming, even though she tended to fade into Serena's shadow, their deep friendship made us envy what they had and wish we had in our own lives. They gave each other advice and were two girl BFFs that believed it was them against the world (and against boys, too). Even though the occasional male could come between them, like Nate and Dan, they reminded us why we need a female other half. We could not get enough of Serena and Blair, even during their rivalry. they were seriously just #goals.
13 Loved: Blair And Chuck's Romance
This is one of the most iconic love stories of all time. Maybe even a modern day Romeo and Juliet (well, without the death, of course). And it lasted for far more than a few days, since their romance encompassed the entire show, right until the bitter end. From taking Blair's virginity in the back of a limo to practically selling her out for a hotel, Chuck Bass wasn't always the hero we wanted him to be. Every now and then, when it seemed like the world and Gossip Girl would never allow these two soulmates to be together, a light would shine on the two lovers to reveal what the producers had in store for them. While they struggled to confess their love to each other, they were destined to be. King and Queen of the Upper East Side. The cherry on top was the series finale when it was revealed that a few years after their whirlwind wedding, they had a super adorable little boy named Henry.
12 Loved: The Fashion
One of Blair's henchman can be quoted as saying “Mother taught me to never wear the same outfit twice.” When each outfit costs a couple thousand dollars, this certainly sounds ridiculous, but not for the Upper East Side. Each character had their own unique style that showcased the fashion world to its audience, it was a major theme of the show! From Blair's preppy headbands and Serena's gravity-defying cleavage, we bet you designed some of your favorite apparel after what you saw on Gossip Girl. It wasn't just for the women, either, because it's impossible to forget Chuck's iconic array of suits in all colors. It created the atmosphere of pure wealth, no matter what the scene, but even the fashion on the other side of the bridge was an important part of the show. Can you forget the onscreen notification of Jenny and how fashion developed her character? This show was definitely fashionable, no doubt about it.
11 Loved: The Drama
Can you name a show that was more dramatic? Definitely, not recently, that's for sure. Nothing had as many twists and turns, with friendships and relationships fluctuating in every single episode -- maybe even every single scene. Remember when everyone thought Chuck died? What was even crazier was when his dad came back from the dead. Serena van der Woodsen had drama in her genes, just look at Lily Bass! We've lost track of how many last names she's had. Gossip Girl always kept you on your toes and dreading the next turn as much as you adored it. Just when things were going totally right, GG would turn it around and it would suddenly be a total and utter disaster. This show was what drama is at its very core, and while sometimes it could be frustrating enough to make you want to scream at the show, it was really what made us keep watching it. We fell in love with the characters and had to see where their lives took them!
10 Loved: Lily And Rufus
There was something tragically sweet about these two. The way their lives unfolded and collided together… only to ultimately tear them apart. Not only that but to see their very own fates repeat themselves in Dan and Serena, as they watched their children work through their same mistakes when trying to combine their polar opposite worlds. Everyone was rooting for Lily and Rufus at one point, and for many, they were a fan favorite. It was as if life gave them a second chance when they ran into each other in Rufus's art gallery, as it was revealed they never lost their love for one another. They felt like destiny, with a hint of drama, like when Rufus's first wife Alison found out the song she thought he wrote for her, was actually originally written for Lily. Unfortunately, fate and lifestyle eventually tore them apart, a true heartbreaker for many Gossip Girl fans. Their tragic loves story will always be a reason we love this show.
9 Loved: Chuck Confessing His Love
Was anyone else annoyed when Chuck refused to say those words at the white party at the beginning of season two? Three words, eight letters, say them and she is yours, Chuck! It took a whole lot more drama and plot twists for Chuck Bass to finally confess what we all knew was true, and maybe having to wait did really make it better. While Blair was trying not to sulk that he was in Europe, his sudden appearance looking as dashing as ever, leaning against his limousine, was everything we've dreamed of. Him admitting he was in Paris, but only to get her favorite macaroons, and in Germany to get her favorite stockings, is something we wish every man would do for us. The most spectacular moment, however, in maybe one of the most heart melting moments of the entire show, is when he finally says “I love you” to Blair. He says it over and over and over again! Every Gossip Girl fan cherishes this special moment.
8 Loved: Blair's Schemes
The pure wit and genius of Blair Waldorf to get revenge on, well, literally everyone, is something every Gossip Girl fan worshiped. When Georgina Sparks wronged Serena, it was her elaborate and divisive schemes that got her sent far away. We loved Blair's wicked smirk when she was enacting revenge on someone, and we pretty much always thought that whoever was on the receiving end totally deserved it. Hey, she wasn't a total witch -- there was some goodness in her too along with all the scheming and plotting. She always took care of the people she cared the most about, and she always looked perfect doing it. Sure, sometimes she takes things a little too far, like when she hazed a teacher that gave her a less than perfect grade and insinuated the teacher was sleeping with Dan, but that lack of discretion is what made Blair Waldorf magical to watch.
7 Hated: Jenny Ruining Everything
When Chuck and Jenny slept together, every fan thought this was a super low moment. You almost wanted to break up with the show, right? Especially if you loved watching the show because you wanted to finally see Chuck and Blair together. Sigh. This was totally Chuck's fault, but hey, we still blamed Jenny for this, even though she was the one that had to live with totally regretting losing her virginity. Right after she and Chuck did the deed, Blair tells Chuck that she loves him and needs to be with him. Jenny sneaks out, and Blair has zero idea that she was even there, but the drama unfolds and by the end of the episode, everyone finds out. It seemed like the last straw for Blair and it seemed that Chuck and Blair were over forever. The worst part? Chuck was about to propose to Blair! Every Gossip Girl fan hated this moment.
6 Hated: Chuck And Vanessa
This was one of the weirder couples on the show, but it seemed like everyone eventually slept with everyone here, so maybe it was only a matter of time. While apparently Ed Westwick and Jessica Szohr had chemistry in real life, Chuck and Vanessa never did. Thankfully, it was a fleeting relationship. It was based on insecurity and revenge, an obviously horrific and unstable foundation to forge a relationship on, but his filthy rich status and her unknown status didn't give them much to start with. While the connection between them was brief, they only slept together to get revenge on Blair and Nate, simply to make them jealous. It ended up being a massive regret on both their parts, and we're glad this romance didn't stick around too long. No one was interested in seeing Vanessa and Chuck play out, and it was one of the more irritating and hated parts of the show.
5 Hated: The Long Lost Lovechild
Initially, this was a thrilling and dramatic moment in the Lily and Rufus story arc. While Rufus was super angry at first that Lily had hidden the fact that she gave birth to their baby years ago and gave it up for adoption, fans of the couple were hoping it would bring them together. Unfortunately, this was just super weird, no doubt about it. Scott, their love child, does eventually show up, and it's a fairly interesting moment to begin with. However, it throws a weird dagger in the Dan and Serena romance, because sharing a brother with your lover somehow sounds a bit incestuous? It certainly disturbs them, if having their parents get married to make them siblings-in-law doesn't already. But after the big reveal and all the drama, Scott just sort of disappears, forever. There isn't even so much of a mention of him in any of the following seasons, and Lily and Rufus don't end up together anyways. This truly ended up being an irksome moment in Gossip Girl, and it's filled with plot holes.
4 Hated: Serena's Wedding
Sure, on a surface level, it's nice that Dan and Serena finally find their way to each other and they get married, proving that they were destined to be together since the very beginning. However, if you dig even a little deeper, this couple is beyond disturbing by the end of the series. Hello, Dan is Gossip Girl! Considering all the horrific things gossip girl revealed to the Upper East Side that practically ruined Serena's life, it doesn't make much sense to marry the man behind the mask. It's creepy, especially when Serena was a promising and powerful woman who could marry whoever she wanted. If you need relationship advice, how about don't spend forever with someone who secretly tormented you all through high school and thereafter. If you don't want to think too deeply about their union, we respect that, but in reality, it's beyond disturbing. Would you marry your stalker?!
3 Hated: Blair And Dan
Everything was wrong about this on so many levels. Blair was Queen Bee and Dan was way too self-righteous. Not only that, but the love triangle that blossomed between Dan, Chuck, and Blair was super unrealistic, and it made it look like Blair was merely a shell of her former self in the first several seasons. Dan was everything Blair loathed in the beginning as she mercilessly poked at him throughout his romance with Serena, so where the attraction stemmed from is beyond everyone's understanding. Then there was the fact that the first time they got naked, it basically sucked. Come on, Blair, you knew that you were meant to be with Chuck. Thankfully, she chose him in the end, which we are fairly sure everyone predicted and was rooting for. All Gossip Girl fans hated these two, that is for sure. We don't even know why the writers bothered to waste our time anyway.
2 Hated: Georgina Sparks
Every show needs a villain, but these characters were their own worst enemies, and Georgina only complicated things and made everything way worse. Plus, who is human and actually that cruel? Who just wakes up in the morning and says, "I can't wait to ruin some lives"?! From the moment she arrives to allegedly reveal the truth of Serena's murder, from destroying Serena and Dan's relationship by sleeping with Dan, to pretending to have Dan's baby, we have no idea why she was even a character to begin with. She's unrealistic and one of the most hated characters in the show. It was too easy to loathe her face from the very beginning. She's heartless and interfering in plot lines she has no business being in, and we could go on and on about why every Gossip Girl fan hated her, but we know we don't have to tell you why she was the actual worst. Sorry, Michelle Trachtenberg, but we wish your character didn't exist.
1 Hated: Who Gossip Girl Was
Dan Humphrey had a rough and tumultuous fall from grace. He was introduced as the lonely boy everyone rooted for, hoping he could get the girl of his dreams from another world. After six years of watching him evolve into more of a brat episode by episode, we could theorize that holding on to the secret that he was gossip girl ate away at his character and altered his personality, but that still doesn't correct the massive plot holes in the huge revelation. Um, remember when GG s!u+-shamed Jenny? So Dan s!u+-shamed his own sister? There are a million elements that don't add up to him being GG, and while you could create the argument that he has always been the ultimate outsider, it's clear it wasn't always fabricated into the plots who gossip girl's true identity was. It might have been Dan who was pulling the strings all along, but that might be why this was a part of Gossip Girl we don't love. Where's the innocent Lonely Boy? Or is it creepy that he came up with that nickname for himself?!
