15 Celeb Couples Who Are Better Off Apart
Let's face it, no one wants to be stuck in a tumultuous relationship… and most of us have experienced that at least once. Dating someone who is just plain toxic is not only embarrassing but also totally emotionally draining. True love is something that we all long for, and when you think you've finally found “the one” you'll do just about anything to make the romance go the distance. We all know that it takes the right kind of person to be ready for a healthy, committed relationship, even when you're a super famous celebrity. While it may be too easy for us to see that some star-powered couples were doomed from the start, they are sometimes too blinded by love to realize that their relationships were headed straight for a downward spiral. Here are 15 super off-again/on-again celeb couples who are definitely better off single instead of together.
15 Sammi Giancola & Ronnie Magro
Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola and Ronnie Magro infamously met in the summer of 2009 when they both were cast on MTV's hit reality show Jersey Shore. Sammi and Ronnie moved into the shore house with every intention of partying non-stop and soaking up the single life. Ronnie's tag line for his summer at the shore was simple: "Never fall in love at the Jersey shore." But fate had a different plan. While Sammi initially had her sights set on fellow co-star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino, she realized that she had some serious chemistry with Ronnie. Almost instantly, Sammi and Ronnie became the resident couple of the house… but things were not perfect.
The next seasons featured their volatile blowouts as the pair went back and forth over inexplicable jealously and a string of cheating allegations. In almost every episode, Sam and Ron would start off madly in love only to transform into scorned exes who couldn't contain screaming, crying, and public attempts at vengeance. They were known for breaking up and getting back together again constantly. The couple's roller coaster romance continued after the cameras stopped rolling, but they called it quits in 2014. By 2016, Sammi and Ronnie sparked rumors when they appeared together for Sammi's birthday and took a romantic getaway to Mexico. Although it may seem like their flame has finally sizzled out for good, neither star has been able to move on. To make matters more complicated, Magro is currently slated to appear on the upcoming season of VH1's Famously Single, where he confesses what everybody has already known: "Sam still has my heart". Only time will tell what the future holds for these two but one thing is for sure: although they're better off apart, they just can't seem to throw in the towel on their relationship.
14 Kourtney Kardashian & Scott Disick
Kourtney Kardashian first met Scott Disick in 2006 and they have been a serious off-again/on-again couple ever since. The world was given an inside look on Kourtney and Scott's relationship from the start, as their many ups and downs have been documented on Keeping Up with the Kardashians and various other spinoff series. Initially, many wondered what Kourtney was even doing with Scott in the first place, (including her own family), but in time Disick won everyone over with his sarcastic quick wit and his innate ability to crack jokes at the Kardashian's expense.
Over the past decade, Kourtney and Scott have been through a lot, including the birth of their three children: Mason, Penelope, and Reign. While fans across the globe were rooting for this dapper duo to go the distance, Disick's internal struggle with a number of personal issues caused too much strain on their romance over time. In 2015, the reality TV stars officially announced their separation, and media outlets have been reporting on the possibility of a reconciliation ever since. Although the love that these two share is undeniable, it's pretty obvious that they are able to co-parent much better without adding a romantic relationship into the equation. Scott makes no secret about his feelings for Kourtney, even stating "I will never be over her, she's the love of my life" on a recent episode of the show. Of course, we would all like to see a happy ending for these longtime lovers, but it's super evident that they work better together when they're apart… at least for now.
13 Mel B & Stephen Belafonte
From the outside looking in, they appeared to be a happy couple for the better half of a decade, but Melanie Brown (aka Mel B) is definitely better off without her second husband, Stephen Belafonte. Mel has had her fair share of wayward romances, but her torrid ten year tryst with Belafonte. Mel and Stephen tied the knot in 2006, shortly after giving birth to a daughter fathered by another former flame, Eddie Murphy. Mel always spoke highly of her husband to the press, often praising him for pushing her to succeed and supporting her dreams, but an ugly divorce battle proved that things were much different behind closed doors. There have been rumors of the couple's impending split on a number of occasions during their decade-long union, but the pair remained a united front and shot down the idea of parting ways… until recently, that is. There have actually been various abuse allegations from third parties. Belafonte has a history of run-ins with the law, and his brother publicly accused him of mistreating Mel.
The former Spice Girl has even endured an estranged relationship with her own family due their disapproval of Belafonte. At one point, The America's Got Talent judge appeared on camera with visible scratches and a large bruise on her cheek, prompting fans to blame Belafonte for the marks. In early 2017, Mel B filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences” and revealed a number of jaw-dropping claims against her longtime lover. The singer accused Belafonte of controlling her every move, in addition to verbal and physical abuse along with threatening to reveal X-rated images and videos of her in an attempt to ruin her career if she tried to leave him. Mel told the court that she tried to end the relationship on multiple occasions but stayed purely out of fear. We're all for “girl power” and we're super glad that Mel finally found the courage to walk away once and for all!
12 Amber Rose & Wiz Khalifa
If there's anyone who knows a thing or two about having a rocky relationship in the public eye, it's totally Amber Rose. Let's not forget, Amber did famously date Kanye West during her initial rise to fame, and their explosive breakup is something we still can't forget even to this day. Of course, Amber has long moved on from Kanye, and she finally found what she believed to be true love with fellow rapper Wiz Khalifa. The pair linked up in 2011 and in the following years they got married and welcomed a son together. It looked like Amber and Wiz were really meant to be… until they announced plans to divorce in 2014. Their breakup was anything but amicable, with Rose taking to Twitter to accuse her former husband of infidelity during the course of their marriage.
The former flames then continued to sling mud at each other on various occasions that included custody battles and Twitter feuds that were just totally toxic. Surprisingly, Amber and Wiz fueled rumors of reigniting their hot and cold romance when they showed up at a red carpet event together kissing and holding hands following Amber's split with her Dancing With The Stars partner, Val Chmerkovskiy. Let's face it, Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa have broken up and gotten back together so many times that we don't even know what to believe anymore. One thing is for certain, this couple loves to air their dirty laundry out in the open and they're probably a whole lot better off when they're not together.
11 Rob Kardashian & Blac Chyna
Out of all the relationships that any Kardashian has been in, perhaps one of the most chaotic belongs to Rob and his off-again/on-again (ex) girlfriend/fiancé/baby mama Blac Chyna. Where do we even begin!? For a long time, Rob had been enjoying living a secluded life away from the limelight that his sisters all thrived off of, but that all changed when Blac Chyna came into the picture. Rob and Chyna embarked on their relationship in early 2016 and by April they had stunned onlookers by announcing news of their engagement after a mere three months of dating. The following month, they had made headlines yet again after announcing that they were expecting their first child together. Naturally, the odd nature of their fast-paced relationship sparked an interest with the general public, and the duo soon signed on to star in a reality show of their very own titled Rob & Chyna.
The series highlighted the unstable relationship between the two stars, often depicting scenes from explosive fights that stemmed from cheating accusations and other insecurities within the romance. Sure, every couple has their differences, but Rob and Chyna fight. Constantly. The mismatched pair developed a dizzying pattern of breaking up and making up mixed with Rob frequently moving in and out of Chyna's house before going off the grid all together. Following the birth of their daughter in November of 2016, the couple officially announced their split right before Christmas. Not surprisingly, Rob and Chyna retracted their announcement a week later and assured everyone that they were back on. To make matters even more complicated, the pair announced their separation yet again only a few days later. There's only one word to describe their relationship, and it's exhausting! Yup, it's pretty safe to say that these two might be happier when they're apart.
10 Amanda Stanton & Josh Murray
At first glance, Amanda Stanton and Josh Murray have a lot in common. For starters, they both appeared on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, they were both open to finding love again after having their hearts broken on national television, and they were both ridiculously good looking. Of course, it only made sense for the two lovebirds to hone in on each other when they met on last year's rendition of Bachelor In Paradise. Stanton and Murray couldn't keep their hands off each other, often caught locking lips at any given moment. Although their attraction was instant, other cast mates on the show believed that things weren't quite what they seemed and heeded several warnings for Amanda to pump the breaks when it came to her feelings for Josh.
While Murray did ultimately win his season of The Bachelorette, he and his former fiancé Andi Dorfman had a nasty breakup. She even wrote a book that was filled with allegations about Josh's behavior including his controlling ways and his mounting anger issues. Stanton's co-stars pleaded with her to think twice before getting in too deep with Josh, but by the end of the season the duo left the show as an engaged couple. After filming wrapped, Amanda and Josh settled into daily life, with Josh moving to California to live with his bride-to-be and her two daughters from a previous relationship. Suddenly, things turned sour between the reality TV stars and they parted ways. They sparked rumors of them getting back together after making a public appearance together, but by March of 2017 tensions hit an all-time high. Long story short, Murray tried to take back a car that he had given to Stanton and got the police involved. Both had some pretty unsavory things to say about one another to the media, but Amanda made her feelings very clear when she told reporters, “He's the worst. Everybody warned me.” Needless to say, we hope these two finally learned their lesson and are done once and for all.
9 Tarek & Christina El Moussa
Everyone knows that Tarek and Christina El Moussa were pretty much America's sweethearts for quite some time. The married couple and stars of HGTV's hit series Flip or Flop seemed like they were a perfect match in a Barbie and Ken sort of way. The longtime loves took a risk by mixing business with pleasure when they began flipping houses together, but their power-moves paid off. The couple stuck together through thick and thin, including when Tarek was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2013. That's why people were downright shocked when the pair announced their plans to end their marriage in late 2016.
After news of their split spread like wildfire, the media found out the El Moussa's weren't exactly as perfect in real life as they portrayed on TV. It was soon revealed that the police were called to their home about an altercation. News that both Tarek and Christina had been separated for a number of months and had already begun dating other people also came out. The former husband and wife were committed to carrying on with their television series and maintaining a relationship as co-parents to their two children, stating, “We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively, and plan to continue our professional life together.” Tarek and Christina proved that things aren't always what they seem, and maybe they just might be better off as business partners instead of life partners.
8 Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez
You know what they say, you'll never forget your first love, and that's totally true for Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. Both of these rising superstars got together when they were just two teenagers trying to make it big, and they have been on a series of ups and downs ever since. Their romance dates back to 2010 and they had been super on and super off as recently as 2016. Not many could figure out why someone as sweet and endearing as Selena would want to get tangled up in a budding “bad boy” like Bieber, but he has proven himself to be a habit that she just can't quit. Throughout the years, Justin and Selena would break up, Bieber would date a gaggle of models and groupies, and the pair would ultimately get back together. This pattern would endlessly repeat itself, leaving Selena's heart worse for the ware. Ultimately, Jelena appeared to have split for good, but even in 2017 they can't resist making comments about one another in the press. We think that Justin and Selena will always have a soft spot for their old flames, but we seriously hope that they realize how much better they are apart. But then again, what do we know? The heart wants what it wants…
7 Khloe Kardashian & Lamar Odom
There's no doubt that there were fireworks the moment Khloe Kardashian met pro-basketball player Lamar Odom. The two stars instantly became inseparable and they tied the hastily knot in 2009. Longtime fans of Khloe were super happy that she had finally found love, and their relationship was played out in a reality show of their very own. To all of us, their whirlwind romance seemed to defy all of the odds and Khloe and Lamar were a match made in heaven. However, we would later find out that that there was serious turmoil behind the scenes, and that Khloe was desperately trying to hide a number of her husband's scandalous secrets.
Near the end of 2013, Khloe filed for divorce from Odom and what followed was a wild media storm surrounding their strained relationship. Finally, it was revealed that Lamar had been struggling with severe addiction issues and his constant lying and opiate use was the straw that broke the camel's back when it came to their marriage. To make matters worse, Lamar also later admitted to cheating on Khloe on a number of occasions. It was super obvious that neither Khloe nor Lamar wanted a divorce, but their relationship was far beyond repair. In 2015, Lamar had a highly-publicized near death experience that brought Khloe back into his life once again. Kardashian halted plans to move forward with their divorce and the twosome appeared to be on the road to working things out. Unfortunately, rumors began swirling that Lamar soon reverted back to his old ways, and this time Khloe finally walked away for good. It's clear to see that these two share a deep love for one another, but there's no denying that their relationship was far from healthy.
6 Kylie Jenner & Tyga
It feels like Kylie Jenner has been linked to her on-again/off-again rapper boyfriend, Tyga, for nearly forever! The famous pair first got together in 2014, which caused quite a stir because Jenner was just a teen while Tyga was already well into his twenties. Although their romance became a controversial topic for the press, the twosome forged on and tried to prove that their love was the real deal. Let's be honest, Kylie and Tyga's relationship is more complicated than your average celebrity pairing. Kylie is still only nineteen while Tyga is twenty-six with a child from another woman… who just so happens to be the on-again/off-again partner of Kylie's older brother, Rob Kardashian. Things are definitely far from simple for this family, and their crazy situation paired with their immense celebrity status can be seen as a recipe for disaster. Kylie and Tyga have a long history of breaking up and making up, but we all know that they can never stay apart for too long. As of now, they are broken up but it's only a matter of time before Tyga finds his way back into Kylie's good graces. Their flip-flopping romance is tiring even for us, and we think that they would totally be better off single!
5 Chris Brown & Karruche Tran
Alright, we're just going to come right out and say what everyone's thinking: Chris Brown doesn't exactly excel when it comes to relationships. In 2011, the singer began dating actress and model Karrueche Tran and in true Chris Brown fashion, it has been a rocky road ever since. In 2012, their relationship hit a rough patch when Brown ditched her to get back with Rihanna, but he and Tran ultimately rekindled their love affair when that ran its course. Later that same year, Brown breaks it off with Karruche citing that his friendship with Rihanna complicated things. To add to the confusion, Brown admitted to having feelings for women, stating, “Is there such thing as loving two people? I don't know if that's possible but for me I just feel like that." Over the next couple of years, Chris and Karruche would publicly break up and make up so many times that it was hard to keep track, and we're pretty sure that Brown's numerous bouts in rehab and jail didn't help the situation much either. By 2015, everyone found out that Chris had fathered a daughter by another woman while he was still with Karruche, resulting in her leaving Brown for good. Since then, the former flames have been battling it out on social media and in the courtroom, frequently hurling insults and accusations at one another. Seriously? These two should just do everyone a favor and stay far, far away from each other.
4 Iggy Azalea & Nick Young
Rapper Iggy Azalea and professional basketball player Nick Young first began dating in late 2013. By June of 2015 the two were engaged and they all lived happily ever after, right? So wrong! Following news of their engagement, private video footage surfaced of Young bragging to one of his teammates that he cheats on the star, specifically with younger women. Iggy took to Twitter to make it known that she's seen the tape, but that surprisingly didn't lead to her calling things off with the ball player. A few weeks later, Iggy told the press that she had finally come to her senses and dumped Young because she caught him cheating red-handed, stating, “I broke up with Nick because I found out he had brought other women into our home while I was away and caught them on the security footage”. Ouch. To make matters even worse, these two tip-toed around the idea of getting back together, but all of those plans were crushed when it was revealed that Nick Young's other ex-girlfriend was reportedly pregnant with his second child. This celebrity romance was totally destroyed by lying, cheating and enough dirty deeds to make us all need a long shower. Let's just be real here, Nick Young never deserved Iggy for a second and she can do a whole lot better without him dragging her down.
3 Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck
Although Ben Affleck is a seasoned actor and talented director, there once was a point in time where he was possibly best known as Jennifer Lopez's significant other. Of course, that relationship fizzled out fast and Ben linked up with another Jennifer. Jennifer Garner, that is. The future husband and wife met in the early 2000's but they were dating other people at the time. It wasn't until 2004 that they made things official. Over the next several years, the adorable couple got married, produced three children and never stopped gushing over one another to the press. Life seemed simply magical for Bennifer 2.0 until 2015 when the couple's nanny was photographed attending an event with Ben sans his doting wife. A mere three days later, the world was stunned when Ben and Jen announced their intention to separate after ten years of marriage. Rumors rapidly swirled about Ben cheating on Jennifer during their union, but the twosome still never spoke a bad word about each other to the media. Both Ben and Jen vowed to remain cordial after their divorce, and they have followed through on that plan quite successfully. The former couple is still seen together regularly while they work on maintaining a friendship and bettering themselves for the sake of their family. We all hoped that Ben and Jen would really make it as a couple, but perhaps they are better off apart after all. You know what they say - once a cheater, always a cheater.
2 Jon & Kate Gosselin
Going through a divorce as the whole world watches is surely no easy task, but still having to co-parent eight children with an ex that you just can't stand has got to be the worst. We got an inside look into the Gosselin's lives when they starred in the hit TLC reality show, Jon and Kate Plus 8. The show documented the highs and lows of raising both twins and sextuplets, but an unavoidable topic of interest on the series was the relationship between the two parents. In the beginning, Jon played the role of the submissive husband by letting Kate call the shots, but by 2009 Jon had enough of Kate's demands and they announced their plans to divorce. Since then, the drama has only been amped up between the former couple, with both boasting very public allegations against one another in the media and a pretty nasty custody disagreement out in the open for the whole world to see. There's no denying that these two definitely are total opposites, and for the sake of their children (and their sanity) they should just stay away from each other all together.
1 Chris Brown & Rihanna
In 2008 Chris Brown and Rihanna were already well on their way to becoming pop music royalty, and their star-studded coupling seemed like a natural fit from the start. Fans instantly became enamored with the musical duo, but things took a turn for the worst in 2009 when scandal rocked their romance. The media went into an absolute tailspin when it was revealed that Brown got into a physical altercation with his then-girlfriend, leaving her battered and bruised. Photos of the damage surfaced, Brown turned himself into authorities, Rihanna's career soared to new heights while Chris Brown struggled to stay afloat in the entertainment world, and that was the end of this famously failed relationship… or so we all thought. A stunning three years after their salacious split, Chris and RiRi reunited as boyfriend and girlfriend, much to the chagrin of pretty much everyone else on the planet. Nobody could understand why Rihanna would forgive and forget the abuse that took place at the hands of Brown, and nobody was rooting for them as a couple this time around. Eventually, Chris and Rihanna broke up yet again and we can confidently say that they definitely shouldn't rekindle their romance.
