15 Movies From 2016 We All Secretly HATED
If you find yourself going to the movies on a regular basis (or even not-so-regular basis) and hating what you see, you're not alone. We all know that there are tons of films with big budgets and awesome casts that we can only grade with a big fat F. Before we look at the movies of 2017 and think about what films we want to spend our hard-earned cash on, it's time to look at the 2016 films that you thought were huge failures. These are the movies that got tons of attention and amazing ratings and did amazingly well at the box office… but you secretly hated them. Everyone has a long list of movies that you will never, ever watch again. You never talk about these movies, though, because people don't really understand. Sorry to tell the truth, friends, but just because an actress that you love is in a film doesn't mean that it's going to be good. We don't want to keep our list of most hated 2016 movies a secret anymore. Here they are.
15 'Independence Day: Resurgence'
Liam Hemsworth, people! That should make it good, right? Totally wrong. I thought that this movie would be good since it is science fiction but I was wrong. I did not actually know that this movie is a sequel to Roland Emmerich's 1996 Independence Day until a few days after I saw it. And just like that, this film became ten times worse than I originally thought it was. After some Googling, I realized that I was not alone in my hatred. Nope, not at all. Lots of sci-fi lovers also felt they were let down by this movie. Sorry, Roland Emmerich. I find Stonewall interesting and The Day After Tomorrow is okay… but Independence Day: Resurgence? I'm not even sure how it became a movie in the first place. Seriously, no one realized that the script is super repetitive and that maybe it needed some more editing or, well, something?
14 'Suicide Squad'
Another movie with a super great cast. Starting off with Will Smith (love this guy) and Jared Leto (who hates Jared Leto?!) and How to Get Away With Murder's Viola Davis. But for some reasons, okay maybe lots of reasons, this was one disappointing film. If you look at the poster and make your movie-watching decision on that, it feels like a movie you and your best friends wouldn't want to miss. I must applaud the team who did the poster. It's colorful and fun and catchy. But after watching the movie, you wish that could turn back time and eat your popcorn watching another movie. I don't care that this movie earned millions in the States alone. I care that my time and money were wasted and I'm now afraid that DC Films will franchise more crappy movies. Please don't. The world is already messed up as it is. We don't need more annoying and awful films like this (especially not after the year that 2016 was).
13 'Dirty Grandpa'
Anyone up for an awkward, totally cringe-worthy movie that will make you question your choices in life? Then sure, Dirty Grandpa is the movie for you. You're going to ask yourself pretty much immediately, "Why did I decide to watch this movie?" Yes, people, it's really that bad. In case you haven't seen this, let me tell you that the hottie Zac Efron we knew in High School Musical is not in this movie. The plot is about Zac's character and his grandpa played by Robert De Niro getting into all kinds of mischief. And don't ask me why De Niro said yes to acting in this film, I have no idea. Basically, this is 1 hour and 42 minutes of failed comedy. It had a budget of $27 million and Lionsgate production is behind it. Tell me, what can be more disappointing than this? Oh yeah, the fact that by March 2016, just under two months after it was first released in theaters, the movie earned only $35 million.
12 'Allegiant'
This movie (and franchise) gets a lot of comparisons to The Hunger Games. I'm not saying those two movie franchises are crap, and I'm definitely not saying you shouldn't buy the books. In fact, buying the book would be better than watching the movie in this case. What I'm trying to say is if The Hunger Games hit cinemas in 2015, I wish they would have waited a few years before the Divergent series became a film series as well. Take John Green's Paper Towns, for example. The book had been out there in the wild for seven years before there was a movie, and it turned out okay. With Allegiant hitting cinemas only fours months after Mockingjay Part 2, well, that definitely had a negative impact. I do love Shailene Woodley but in this film, she just didn't seem as good as usual. At least this one didn't have zombies. But still, Allegiant not was released at the wrong time, but it was super repetitive.
11 'Warcraft'
Oh look, a video game movie. What could go wrong? Oh, only everything. It had a $145 million budget plus major marketing and an estimated global gross of $433 million. I mean, do you honestly think every movie that makes $433 million around the globe is a hit? Nope. Of course not. In this case, a lot of things went wrong for Warcraft. First of all, it was clearly made for the very few people who play the game. When you create a film, even if that's based on a video game, I think it's smart to make it so people who haven't played the game could still enjoy the movie watching experience and maybe even understand it. Makes sense, right? Well, that's unfortunately not the case here. There's so much going on in this movie that it's super crazy. There's a lot of running around, people. And it's packed with dull characters, too. Ouch.
10 'Swiss Army Man'
Finally, a film with a high score from metacritic.com. Daniel Radcliffe stars alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Paul Dano, so that's a pretty awesome cast. But to be honest, I'm not sure why this film was even made and distributed in the first place. Yes, I know, it's interesting and funny and something new. But is that enough? We have tons of moviegoers and while there's no one-size-fits-all movie, I still think that Swiss Army Man is totally a mess. People went to see it based on the trailer which was pretty good and all the smart marketing, but a lot of people were disappointed and even confused after. The movie was written and directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and is 90 minutes of adventure comedy with a bit of drama. Basically, it's the story of a man who befriended a dead body after he got stranded on an island. If you think that's a good film, we can't be friends.
9 'Jackie'
A movie about the grief of former First Lady Jacqueline Kenney after the assassination of her late husband former President John F. Kennedy. This film was definitely expected to be one of the best of 2016. Sure, it's got high ratings from all kinds of movie sites, but this bio-drama isn't as good as most people expected. Starring Natalie Portman, Greta Gerwig and Peter Sarsgaard with Caspar Phillipson as JFK, this film still lacks something. Here's what it's missing: events. As in, something actually happening. You know that thing called a plot? Why should a movie be almost two hours long when it's not even necessary at all? The budget was supposedly $9 million and earned only roughly $278,000 during its opening weekend. So yeah, while this film is all about an iconic family and a very tragic event that can never be erased in American history, there's no denying that Jackie could've been better. A lot better. And maybe a little shorter.
8 'Money Monster'
It breaks my heart to put this crime drama on this list. It's got George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Jack O'Connell. Even so, it needs to be here. The story is pretty boring compared to other similar films. Money Monster wants a lot of things to happen in 90 minutes and that's actually its downfall. There's just so much going on in the film that it's like the movie can't even keep up with it and it's just not good at all. But I won't say anything about George Clooney and Julia Roberts. They did their best and I'd be lying if I said I don't like their acting because I really do. They're obviously super good at what they do. But overall, Money Monsters is a total failure of a film. Sorry, Julia Roberts, I'll just watch Eat Pray Love again because that was a really fun film and you need to star in more of those.
7 'Inferno'
Do you want to watch an action film about amnesia? Sure. Me too. It sounds interesting and it was interesting as well. The there's the fact that the awesome and adorable Tom Hanks stars in this movie. Also, it was directed by the amazing Ron Howard, an Academy Award winner and the man behind the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas. So what happened to Inferno? Why did it make this list? I have no idea why it was such a failure. It's basically a mix of action, crime, and adventure and it's set in Europe. When Robert Langdon (played by Tom Hanks) wakes up with amnesia in an Italian hospital, he teams up with Dr. Sienna Brooks (played by Felicity Jones) to race and goes against the clock to foil a deadly plot. Not the best plot synopsis, I know, but that's all I got. The poster is pretty amazing and the trailer looks amazing. So many people gave this movie a chance. Wrong decision. And the fact that it's based on a Dan Brown book? Ouch.
6 'Why Him?'
Two hours of comedy? I'll take that. You would too, right? Everyone needs to laugh and sometimes it's best to head to the movies and escape from life for a little bit. I don't have anything against James Franco or any other actor from this film. But to be totally and completely honest, this movie is a pain to watch. With a metascore of 38, do you believe me now? What about an IMDB score of 6.6? Seriously guys, this is one failure of film from 2016. For so many reasons. It's funny, sure, but the fun starts and stops with all the scenes and the story that you see in the trailer. You read that right, this is only a trailer's worth of comedy. If you have high standards when it comes to jokes, I don't think this movie will pass even half of your standards. If your highest standard is exaggerated jokes, then this would be a 10. Come on, people. Science can find a way to cure cancer but we can't create movie-worthy jokes? If you watch this with the intention of passing the jokes on to your friends, don't even think about it.
5 'Collateral Beauty'
Okay, to be honest, I actually loved this film. Or maybe I didn't love it. But it's an okay movie. Well, at first. The fact is that the more that you watch it, the more you wonder why Will Smith said yes to this. Just think about the fact that it got a 6.4 IMDB score and 24 metascore. Based on those alone, you know that there's an issue with Collateral Beauty. And there is. It's boring. Not boring as in nothing interesting is happening. Boring as in repetitive. If you want to spend your Friday night watching a cliché film while your friend's party, then yeah, watch this movie. But if you're like me, and the hundreds and thousands of movie lovers who are always searching for something new and sensible, this is a fail. It's super sad since Will Smith is one heck of an actor and the storyline is actually good, plus there was an okay budget. But you can totally skip this one if you haven't seen it yet.
4 'The Choice'
In today's generation, we've seen almost every kind of romantic movie from all possible angles. So of course, it's a challenge to create yet another romantic film that will pass the high standards of society. The Choice failed. I don't care if it's based on a Nicholas Sparks book. The fact that Tessa Palmer starred this movie and it still flunked, that's a problem, people. Tessa is good, you know. It's really the storyline, the script, and everything else that failed. It's a total cliche on the level of that old poem "roses are red, violets are blue." If you really want to know what's up with this movie, go read the book. Unlike Harry Potter where life won't be complete without watching the entire series and reading every single book when it comes to The Choice, the book is a better option. Here's the honest plot line: a woman and man live in a tiny town and fall in love, then life happens. Yeah, actually.
3 'Gods Of Egypt'
So, I have been yammering about movies that are dull and in this case, there is actually something happening in Gods of Egypt. There are lots of ceremonies and speeches and exposition and ceremonies and speeches and, well, you got the point. So now you know what to expect when watching this movie. In case you decided to skip the movie theater and just watch it on TV or on your laptop or whatever, you my friend are up for some speech lessons. In fact, if you really need a speech lesson for school, this is a must-watch. It will teach you how to deliver a message in a way that people will really listen. That is what you get for a movie with approximately $140 million budget. All you get are ceremonies and speeches. I can't even. This movie makes me question life all over again.
2 'The Huntsman: Winter's War'
Prequel? sequel? Whatever. This movie failed the public's expectations, period. I don't know if you've seen it but this is a really bad movie on so many levels. I initially thought it was only because Kristen Stewart was a part of the first film, Snow White and the Huntsman, and it sucked to see this movie hit cinemas without her starring in it. But now, I'm okay with it. Because it's not her that this movie failed. I mean, with or without Stewart, the storyline remains the same. It's the storyline that failed, not the artists. Jessica Chastain and Chris Hemsworth are both super awesome actors and they are both amazing here. And the set. Oh, the set was amazing. And the effects weren't overdone. But the story was empty. The kind of empty that you'll watch only if there's literally nothing else to watch and you're bored to death. The $115 million budget went down the drain with this movie's gross of only $47.9 million.
1 'American Pastoral'
Wrapping up the list is American Pastoral, a movie that came out in October 2016. I wish this movie didn't even come out at all. Because it's probably the worst crime drama movie ever. Basically, this is a story of a college star, his beauty queen wife, and their life as it falls apart. And oh, they also have a daughter who decided to join the chaos of the American 60s. Directed by Ewan McGregor, this movie stars Ewan McGregor but still failed on a lot of points. One of which is the fact that there's really nothing to it. As in, nothing. I'm no expert and to be honest, I didn't even finish this movie, but in my opinion, I'd say it's the storyline or the script. What I'm sure of is that it's not Philip Roth's fault, the man who wrote the award-winning novel that this movie is based on, and it's definitely not the fault of stars like Dakota Fanning. Sigh. Let's hope for better movies in 2017. We can only go up from here, right?
