15 Of The Craziest Moments From 'Catfish' You Forgot About
Catfish has been on the air for six seasons now, and you definitely love tuning in to see your adorable hosts Nev Schulman and Max Joseph dig deep to find out if two people have made a love connection online… or if someone is totally lying. The show is a lot of things -- powerful, moving, interesting, and entertaining -- but sometimes, it can be completely crazy. There have been more than a few times where you have wondered how that could have possibly happened, and of course, those moments are what keep you coming back. After all, the best reality television can be a little bit crazy. You wouldn't have it any other way. Here are 15 of the craziest moments from Catfish that you forgot about. Because six seasons is a lot of digital love stories… and some stories that don't end up happily ever after either.
15 When Nev Threw A Phone Into A Lake
Nev is always cool, calm, and collected… right?! Well, he was, until this one particular episode when he threw someone's phone into the water. This happened back in the third season. Nev got mad and took Cole's phone and literally threw it into the lake that they were standing in front of. Um, okay. You probably couldn't believe your eyes. You were definitely shocked by this. Of course, within moments, Nev apologized and said that he shouldn't have done that he should have been more clear headed. You didn't blame him for getting angry since he must deal with a lot of crazy emotions while filming the show. It's honestly amazing that he holds it together all the time anyway. Nothing like this has happened again on the show, so Nev probably regrets it, but hey, you definitely think that it made for some pretty good television. It's a moment that you might have forgotten about since the show has been going on for years now, but now you'll never forget it.
14 When Max Got Heated
In the season two episode featuring a girl named Jen, she thought that she was talking to someone named Skylar online. It turned out to be Bryan… and he didn't give a crap if he hurt her feelings or seriously upset her. Nope. He said he was working on his game and that this was no big deal for him. Max got so pissed off that he totally yelled at the guy… and rightfully so. This was a truly crazy episode since it was actually hard to watch at times. You felt so badly that this girl had been hurt and you couldn't believe that this was happening. It just felt so cruel and so unfair. It was surprising to see Max get so worked up since up until that point, he had kind of stayed on the sidelines, more comfortable seeing everything through the lens of his camera. But this was an epic moment in Catfish history and allowed Max to start speaking his mind more often, which is awesome since he is so cool.
13 When Lauren And Derek Were Really In Love
When Lauren told Nev and Max that she swore that the guy she had been talking to online, Derek, was going to be who he said that he was, they definitely didn't believe her. They thought that she was being way too naive and innocent and that she should be more realistic. They just figured there was no way that it would really be Derek. The biggest shocker of all: it really was Derek. Yup. Totally him. They started dating and even proved that they were totally in love, and that was even crazier, since up until that point, a hopeful and a catfish had never ended up in an actual relationship after meeting through the show. Sadly, things didn't actually work out for Lauren and Derek. Although they got engaged (and while appearing on an MTV special, no less), they have since gone their separate ways.
12 When Someone Pretended To Be Bow Wow
In season two, Keyonnah was talking to someone that she thought was Bow Wow. Yes. Bow Wow as in the rapper. It ended up being a girl named Dee. It was a pretty crazy episode since you couldn't really believe that it was going to be the famous rapper. That just didn't seem to be possible. Nev and Max didn't think so, either. Once they met Dee, things got even more interesting because she started talking about how she often pretended to be male (and would even, um, sleep with people while pretending to be male). This is still one of the craziest moments on this show and it's not something that people have forgotten, but if you didn't remember it, no big deal. There have been a lot of crazy moments and a lot of catfishing going on over the past six seasons. You can't possibly remember absolutely everything.
11 When Johnny Was On The Show Twice
Remember Johnny, who was actually the catfish in a recent episode? He showed up once again in a season six episode… but this time, he wasn't the catfish but the hopeful. Nev and Max were amazed to see the same guy on the show twice but in two different capacities. He wasn't ever able to get over his ex and this was a point of contention in both episodes. When he was the catfish, he did that to try to get revenge on his ex and also get back together with him, and so it seemed like he might have been doing that once again. Thankfully, it turned out that he really was catfished… and, yes, that was a good thing since the guys were worried that he was appearing on the show to try to get his ex to notice him again. So that was a relief. This episode just proved that you can never predict what will go down on Catfish.
10 When The Catfish Was The Husband
A woman named Candic was catfished by someone that she thought was named Titus in season five. She reached out to Nev and Max because she wanted to know who he was and if they had a real connection. The kicker: she was still married and having issues with her husband. That's why she felt that she needed someone to talk to. In an absolutely amazing and epic turn of events, they discovered that the catfish was none other than her husband, Jamie. He knew that she was going through something tough and he hadn't been able to help her or get through to her IRL as her husband. So he did the one thing that seemed to be the right thing: he pretended to be someone else so he could still help her and be an ear to listen to. It was such a crazy episode because it was so incredibly sweet and touching and charming.
9 When The Catfish Was The Cousin
Carmen contacted the guys in season three because her cousin, Antwane, was talking to a guy named Tony. Who was the catfish? None other than Carmen herself. It was an absolutely crazy and shocking moment. Nev and Max were shocked as well and they definitely felt pretty betrayed since they had been talking to Carmen about the whole situation. This goes down in Catfish history as an epic moment that no one can forget about or stop talking about. It seemed like their relationship was broken beyond repair for a while there but the word on the street these days is that the cousins have started talking again. It's definitely sad when catfishing becomes a family affair because it's tough to get back to a good place once again, but thankfully, it seems like these two have gotten over what happened.
8 When Brandon Was Who He Said
This season, Kelsie was talking to Brandon online and she was convinced that they were meant to be together. There were some classic catfish things going on: they tried to meet up a few times and it just couldn't happen, and he had some stories (like claiming that his truck was always broken). It was super crazy when everyone learned that, yup, the truck stuff was totally true. He really couldn't drive it on a regular basis and he didn't have enough money to travel to actually meet Kelsie. She was thrilled to meet him in person and they actually started dating after meeting on the show, which was also pretty crazy since that has only happened a handful of times. Nev and Max definitely didn't think that he would be who he said that he was since, naturally, they have been down this road before. Unfortunately, Brandon and Kelsie aren't still a couple.
7 When A Catfish Wouldn't Stop
A catfish named Mary was pretending to be a girl named Ally. She talked to Dylan and they seemed to have a great connection. Once Dylan learned that Ally was really Mary and that she was a serial catfish, it was pretty upsetting, but he was able to let go and move on. Unfortunately, Mary keep catfishing. It was recently revealed that Mary was still going strong as a catfish and that she felt like she couldn't stop. It had become such an addiction for her and such a big part of her life. Thankfully, it seems like she really has quit this bad habit these days, and that she is doing much better. One of the most powerful and heartbreaking parts of the show is when you realize that people are really hurting and going through something difficult. You just want them to heal and get to a better place in their life.
6 When Justin Was Real
In a season five, a girl named Leuh was talking to a guy named Justin online, and it seemed way too good to be true. A cute guy living in California who was going to be her one and only? Yeah right… Nev and Max didn't want to see her heartbroken and they felt very protective of her and the whole situation. Her friends and family wondered why she couldn't find someone closer to home since she is so young and beautiful and awesome. They didn't want to see this go sour, either. It turned out that Justin was actually real. Yup. It was him. The funny thing about this show is that when the catfish turns out to be who they said that they are, you are totally shocked and it becomes a totally crazy moment. That's just the nature of the show. Even though this has definitely happened a few times at this point, it's still pretty nuts.
5 When They Met Another Justin
Remember Justin? He was a catfish in season five and definitely made for an, um, interesting episode. Yup. Interesting. He started going pretty crazy and yelling and saying all this stuff that didn't make a whole lot of sense. He pretended to be a girl named Jess because, as he told it, he wanted to talk to guys who were cheaters. It was a form of revenge. As you can see from this photo, Nev literally had to reign Justin in because he was so upset and being so harsh. It was a pretty strange scene to be honest. You probably couldn't believe what you were seeing because it was a first for Catfish. Usually the catfisher was pretty regretful and upset once they had been caught. They weren't being so arrogant and conceited, even after they had already been found out, because that just wouldn't make any sense.
4 When People Say That Justin Was An Actor
There's more to that story, apparently: people are saying that Justin is actually an actor and that he was just appearing on the show in order to get a job with MTV or something like that. The rumor floating around online is that he was pretending to be a catfish on purpose. Hmmm. Do you believe that? What a crazy idea, right? If this is true then it's definitely pretty nuts, and if it's not true, then it's still nuts. People have been saying for a while now that the show is totally fake -- and people even believe that the original documentary that the show was based on was fake. This kind of rumor is really nothing new. It seems like absolutely anything can happen on this show. At the very least, you can say with total and utter confidence that after this season five episode, nothing will surprise you. And you are prepared for anything when you sit down to watch each new episode.
3 When Nev And Max Believed In Ghosts
In season five, a girl named Kayla contacted Nev and Max. She had been talking to someone named Courtney who swore that she had been visited by Kayla's dead dad. In other words, she was a psychic. This was an absolutely crazy episode and you never knew what to think or what was going to happen next. You kept thinking that there was no way that this was real since ghosts aren't real… and then you would think that, yeah, it seemed pretty convincing. Talk about an emotional rollercoaster. Perhaps even more shocking was that Nev and Max totally said that they believe in ghosts after the experience of filming this episode. It's not that you think that they are wrong. People can believe whatever they want to believe and there are no right or wrong answers when it comes to matters of spirituality. It was just shocking that two guys would admit to believing in spirits since that's not something that most people are willing to admit. Shocking and cool, that is.
2 When Someone Thought He Was Talking To Katy Perry
When Nev and Max traveled to London, England, it was because someone contacted them believing that they were talking to Katy Perry. And they literally believed it. Even when there was some definite proof that it wasn't Katy Perry and that there was no chance at all, they still believed it. Nev and Max were definitely shaking their heads at that one and they couldn't get a grip on why this person's mind wasn't changed. It's one of those episodes that you can't really wrap your head around because it just doesn't make any sense. Usually, the hopeful realizes that the person that they have been talking to is either a.) the person they thought but there was a serious reason why they couldn't meet or b.) someone else entirely. They have an honest conversation about it and then are able to move on with their lives. There is some form of resolution. But in this case, that just didn't happen, and it was like the guy had never been on the show. He still thought it was Katy Perry.
1 When There Was An Investigation
On a recent episode, Nev and Max decided to do some serious digging and try to meet Shelly Chartier, someone who is famous for catfishing. It was a pretty serious and complicated case. She actually catfished two people at the same time: a girl named Paris Roxanne and the celebrity that she was dating, NBA star Chris "Birdman" Andersen. Nev and Max talked to whoever they could about the subject, they traveled to Canada, and they ended up going to Shelly's home. They met her, her husband, and her mom, and they talked to her in an open and honest way. It was a seriously crazy episode since you never knew what was going to happen next and you really felt like you were sitting on the edge of your seat the entire time. It's one of those episodes that you could watch again and again and still find new things about it. Definitely a crazy Catfish moment.
