15 Reasons To Rewatch 'The Big Bang Theory'
We all need a go-to TV series in this world that will give us some space from the BS realities of the world and social media always in our faces and around every corner that we turn. We need some little humorous escape from the stresses of this life. A show that we've seen over and over again, memorized by every episode and each time you still get the same joy out of watching it; the same little break from your day that you're longing for.
The Big Bang Theory has everything you could ever need in a show. It has humor. It has cute girls, and it has nerdy guys. It's smart but still funny. It's serious, yet enlightening. It's the perfect binge show to rewatch over and over and over again along with others like Friends or something else of the sort. You can skip around amongst seasons like it's nothing and it will still be the pure, good humor that it always has been.
15 Leonard as “the muscle” of the group
If you've ever seen the show or are familiar with Leonard's character in the slightest, then you'll know why this seems totally ridiculous. He's the muscle of the group totally by default, but in all reality, he probably is the only one with any semblance of muscle mass as it is anyway. Regardless, Leonard is one of the main characters (at least for the first couple of seasons until Sheldon steals his spotlight) and acts as the nucleus of their entire social group.
He's like a little puppy in a way. He's sweet and innocent, cute and harmless so you simply just have to love him. Yet he has these moments that he acts just like any other annoying guy in the world and will just screw it up.
He is the kind of character that most of us can relate to someone in our social group in one way or another. He's nerdy (obviously) but he's one of the “coolest” of the little nerdy group they have going on and believe it or not, can blend into the “real” world more easily than the rest. He's loveable and you have no choice but to hope nothing but the best for him.
14 The girlfriend dynamic is all too relatable
For the first few seasons, Penny was one of the only main female characters to add to the geeky little group. She added the necessary charming, hot neighbor dynamic that those boys across the hall desperately needed. She is the target of Leonard's infatuation for the entirety of the show but after the first couple of seasons, her cuteness begins to fall a little flat. This is when we're introduced to Bernadette who, by some miracle, ends up with Howard. We also meet Amy who, by another great miracle, ends up head over heels in love with Sheldon.
The group is then complete and the girlfriend dynamic is at its peak. Penny is the bubbly, ditzy one. Bernie is the brilliant one with slight anger issues. And Amy is the incredibly awkward, lovable one. They all fit together perfectly and I'm sure we all can relate our own group of girlfriends to the same type of dynamic. Bernie and Amy have fit into the plot perfectly. The last thing is now Raj has to find another woman besides his dog, Cinnamon.
13 This group will teach you things you never thought you'd want to know
The inspiration for this show came from two real-life, believe it or not, totally cool, but geeky computer programmers that just had a brilliant idea one day. However, instead of being limited to strictly computer concepts, jargon, and things of that sort, The Big Bang Theory includes natural sciences, particularly physics, and every other random science and intellectual reference that you could possibly think of. This allowed for the producers to expand further into subjects about literally the entire universe; any and every topic that you could ever come up with. I mean Sheldon is a genius, right?
Come on, even the soundtrack which starts with, “Our Whole Universe was in a hot dense state”… says a whole hell of a lot about the show's content right off the bat. The entire show is a great source of knowledge, information and even inspiration for anyone and everyone, people of all age groups. And hell, it's fun on top of all of that.
12 There's something for everyone to love
Although this is a show of geeks and pretty, dumb blondes across the hall, The Big Bang Theory is not specifically just for those of a certain intellectual standing and quite honestly, can and should be enjoyed by people from all backgrounds and with varied interests and intellects. There is an eclectic diversity of jokes from scientific jokes to mainstream puns that you just simply cannot get enough of. They strike a joke nearly twice every minute and yet it never seems overdone to the point of annoyance or trying too hard. If you add that together and then take into account the downright hilarious expressions coming off of the one and only Sheldon Cooper, then you'll have yourself laughing your a$$ off for hours.
It's smart. It's funny. It's lighthearted and serious enough to talk about certain moral and ideological points. It is everything you could possibly ask for in a show that you can rewatch over and over again for the years to come and chances are, it will never get old no matter how many times you watch it.
11 Their one-liners will stick with you until the end of time
While watching The Big Bang Theory, one quickly learns which side of the intellectual scale that they fall on. Obviously, most people aren't going to follow every single strain of conversation that goes on in the show, but it will definitely keep your brain spinning trying to keep up. They have these absolutely hilarious, downright brilliant strains of conversation and little one-liners that will crack you up and stick with you for days to come.
You can't forget Sheldon's little remark every single time that someone questions his sanity… “I'm not crazy. My mother had me tested.”
I don't know about you guys out there who watch this show like it's a religion, but I will literally catch myself singing “soft kitty” to myself far more frequently than I'd like to admit.
“Soft kitty. Warm kitty. Little ball of fur. Happy kitty, sleepy kitty. Pur. Pur. Pur.”
Oh yeah, and by the way (in case you forgot): “Scissors cuts paper, paper covers rock, rock crushes lizard, lizard poisons Spock, Spock smashes scissors, scissors decapitates lizard, lizard eats paper, paper disproves Spock, Spock vaporizes rock, and as it always has, rock crushes scissors.” And… Bazinga!
10 Penny and Leonard will remind you what love is
It's unwavering. It's persistent. It's annoying and exhilarating. Love is everything you hate to want, fear the absolute most, and cannot live without. Against all odds, these two always come back to each other no matter how messy and unpredictable life gets. It's exactly like every true love relationship we've all experienced. One partner is undyingly, head over heels infatuated with the other; they always go back to that one person regardless of how many times they may try to move on. They don't fear their love, they're excited for it. Whereas the other partner tends to be more timid. They fight the possibility of love with every fiber of their being, all the while knowing that they can't escape this feeling and they don't quite even understand why they're running from it. Eventually, after much time, they give into the love and wonder why they were so fearful of it for so many years. The conclusion is a love that is true, Annoying to no end, passionate, comfortable, and safe, but still new, exciting, and downright scary as hell at times.
9 You can never get enough of " Shamy"
Sheldon and Amy have to be one of the downright most unusual couples on TV and yet, I can literally not get enough of them. They are so genuine and straightforward in how they handle every aspect of their relationship (in a way that I'm sure we all aspire to sometimes) and yet it's quite passionate and illogical at times for each of them.
They were together for three years before finally having their first reciprocal kiss. It took a long time to happen, but oh la la! What a kiss it was. Sheldon may have initiated it in a sarcastic manner but Ms. Amy swept him off his feet because he was quickly drawn into the kiss like a real live boy should be.
I feel like they're the couple that everyone judges and yet slightly aspires to be like due to how uncomplicated they make the little things in their relationship seem. Yet, come on, they top it off for comic relief and do it perfectly. They are by far the most awkward pairing that I've ever seen but so genuinely seem that they're supposed to be together forever.
8 Koothrappali teaches us all how to get over our deepest fears
Koothrapali can't talk to women or even really look them in the eye without being hammered. To make himself come across as even more awkward, every time that he has something to say when a woman is in the room, he whispers delicately in Howard's ear. As if they didn't have enough trouble with women, that really just adds fuel to the fire that they're in a secret love affair of their own.
Regardless, Koothrappali shows us all how to eventually conquer our fears no matter how absurd they may be. Quite honestly, he makes most of us feel better about our own issues that we have because, realistically, most of us are probably not quite that awkward. So, if he can deal with his fears and still be a total ladies man in spite of it, then we must be able to do anything in the world and conquer any fear that we could ever possibly have.
7 It turns geek into chic
The term 'geek' originally was regarded as someone who is overly devoted to something or is disliked because of such. It soon became known as the term used to mock those who were specifically technologically or scientifically intelligent. Suddenly, though, the idea of being nerdy and geeky has become 'cool', apparently. Being 'nerdy' or even just good at something or somewhat intelligent has become something of a new fashion trend of sorts. Who doesn't want a sexy, short little asthmatic scientist kissing them goodnight each night or an awkward, socially inept Physicist attempting at charming you on an anniversary date that he brought a third-wheel to?
Chicks are wearing big glasses with thick glass to have that smart, sexy look. Men are wearing bowties and button-up shirts like their life depends on it. And IT techs and such other positions are regarded with more respect and admiration than ever before. The comic book store is like Christmas every Tuesday (because Tuesday is, of course, new comic book day) and Star Trek and Doctor Who terminology are becoming a norm in conversation. Geek to chic seems to sum up the millennial outlook on life.
6 It feels like you're all hanging out together
Following in the theme of the geekiness of the show, there are constant references to various TV shows, comics, films, and personalities that these characters absolutely worship and discuss frequently… much to the annoyance of the ladies in their lives.
But it isn't just the obvious references that keep you enthralled and intrigued. Naturally, there are plenty of mentions of the Marvel universe, Batman, Superman, Game of Thrones, Star Trek, Star Wars and the list goes on and on. However, the writers of the show have this clever way of incorporating pop culture references that aren't necessarily all mainstream but that we can identify a real life equivalent to. It's modern enough references that, even as we sit at home watching them talk and eat Chinese food, we feel like we're right there with them and will probably always have something to contribute to their topic of conversation. While that may not have been the major selling point of the series, it definitely added to the relatable dynamic of the entire cast.
5 Sheldon is the little brother you never asked for
Sheldon Cooper is arguably the most popular character on TV today. His Sherlock-esque, overly charming yet totally oblivious lack of social skills and narcissistic behavior have sent him spiraling into the hearts of everyone to watch the show. In the beginning of the show's launch, he seemed to share much of the spotlight with his roommate, Leonard, but over time he has proven to carry much of the show's comic relief.
He is the goofball that we all know and have had in our lives at some point. He's the one that we hate to love and that will absolutely annoy us to no end, but you couldn't imagine life without him. He always seems to ruin all of the fun and be the first person to jump in with an embarrassing comment the second the opportunity becomes available and yet he never has ill intentions and will always speak his mind.
4 Howard Walawitz. 'Nough Said
Howard, the third member of the unique foursome that makes up this show, has somewhat of an unpleasant relationship with his never once seen, yet always clearly heard, mother. His relationship with his mother is so incredibly disturbing on such an intensely uncomfortable level. He is a die hard, forever doomed to-be, momma's boy even long after she has passed on.
His picture of himself is that he's the ladies' man of the crew which could not be further from the truth. He is also the only member of the geek gang who does not have a doctorate degree and therefore, he is often the target of mocking, especially from Sheldon, who leaves no stone unturned in ridiculing him and his lack of a degree. Howard is the one that everyone hates to love, and even Penny had to come to the realization at some point that she, in fact, was actually friends with Howard Walawitz.
3 We're reminded of the importance of bromances
So many shows include some kind of bromance nowadays and the one that takes place in The Big Bang Theory is no different. Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Howard have such an oddly, well-rounded relationship that it feels as real and as fragile as any other relationship in the show. While Leonard and Sheldon are kind of best friends (more by force and lack of anyone else than anything, but still) and roommates and have a great relationship to watch, the dynamic between Raj and Howard is by far, one of the most entertaining parts of the show.
Raj is so incredibly awkward with women that he literally has selective mutism and can only talk to any female under the influence of alcohol.
Due to their loneliness and lack of social skills all around, Howard and Raj become a desperate duo, with Howard living with his overbearing mother until he finally met Bernie and Raj's lack of skills with women they definitely needed each other's companionship. Bromances that will last a lifetime.
2 The question of will they or won't they will keep us on the edge of our seats
Like with any great show with a dynamic cast of characters, like Friends or Cheers, a truly good sitcom would be pretty much nothing without a dose of romance and the big question lingering of whether or not two of the main characters will get it on or not. The Big Bang Theory is no exception to this plot.
While their relationship may be somewhat unrealistic, although nothing is impossible and it definitely lends some spark of hope, Leonard and Penny's courtship remains one of the regular storylines of the series that you just can't get enough of. Leonard takes his time (mostly because he doesn't really have a choice) and finally, after several years of persistent courtship, the will-they-won't-they-despite-him-clearly-not-being-her-usual-type, got together and being much anticipated. Sorry, spoiler alert! However, even in those moments while they may not technically be dating, the progression of their relationship is nothing short of entertaining.
Not to mention, the downright odd relationship that Amy and Sheldon carry on. Amy has slowly begun to change Sheldon's unwavering OCD personality to the point that she has almost made a proper partner out of him. However, the question always lingers in their relationship of will they, or won't they even when it comes down to something as simple as kissing. But I suppose that's why we love them so much.
1 An accurate, authentic script that never gets old
The Big Bang Theory is not just another geeky comedy show. Okay, so it kind of is just a little bit, but that being said, the effort put into the content, characters, and the script is a wonderful combination that seems natural yet intentional. The content written for Sheldon's character alone deserves a freaking award! Not to mention, Mr. Cooper's absolutely perfect delivery of said dialogues. I will never get over some of his facial expressions that accompany the creative (to say the least) scripts.
The show actually has an official science advisor (David Saltzberg from UCLA) who reviews each and every script for technicalities and then makes the necessary corrections. It's good to know that these little tidbits and facts that I remember from binge watching the show aren't total rubbish. The script, the characters, the setting, are all nothing less than ideal and I have to say, this is one of the more well-rounded shows that I've ever seen.
