15 Reasons To Watch 'Monica The Medium'
Do you believe in ghosts? It's not exactly the kind of topic that you're on the fence about, so you probably lean more towards yes or no. Maybe you've had some spiritual encounters yourself, whether or not you ever admit it to anyone other than yourself. There are tons of people out there who are making a career out of talking to dead people, essentially. They may call themselves physics or, like a 22-year-old girl who recently moved to San Diego, they call themselves mediums. We're talking about Monica Ten-Kate, whose life as a twentysomething medium is documented on the Freeform reality series, Monica The Medium. You might already be a super fan -- or you might have never seen a single episode. Well, your spring TV schedule just got much fuller, because now you have 15 reasons to check this fun show out. The series just started its second season so you have a ton of catching up to do. Thankfully, this is the kind of homework that you actually want.
15 It's About Friendship
Monica has her best friend Krista along for the ride. In season one, they're BFFs and roomies in their Pennsylvania house, which was adorable BTW. In season two, they're still filling the same roles, but this time they've decided to move to California. You get to see how their friendship grows and changes -- in particular, how Krista deals with the fact that every single time she and Monica go for drinks, or just leave the house in general, Monica talks to people about the loved ones they've sadly lost.
14 It's About Sisterhood
Monica doesn't just have a best friend in Krista, she has two amazing sisters who are around her age. The three of them are incredibly close, which is always nice to see. It'll remind you of your own sister(s) -- or make you wish you weren't an only child if it's just you and your parents. Sometimes her sisters act like Monica should enjoy her life more and not focus on spirits so much, but hey, a medium has to do what a medium has to do.
13 It's About Cute Dogs
Luna is the real star of this reality show. She's Monica's adorable dog. And we do mean adorable. She provides some comic relief throughout the show, and who doesn't love a sweet dog with a super cute name? No one. No one doesn't love that.
12 It's About Spirituality
Monica has had this gift since she was a kid, and she's obviously a very spiritual person. When she gives a reading, it's because she'll be out in public somewhere and will feel some spiritual energy. She figures out where it's coming from (or who, to be specific) and goes over to that person. She asks if they're open to getting a message and then proceeds to chat about what this spirit is essentially telling her.
11 It's A Coming-Of-Age Story
Essentially, Monica has to learn how to grow up -- while dealing with her special gift. This reality show is so much more than just following someone's life. It's a coming-of-age story. So if you're expecting Real Housewives kind of drama, well, you've come to the wrong place. There are other shows for you. This show is sweet instead.
10 It's About Confidence
Monica sometimes feels kind of awkward and like she doesn't fit in, which is of course a super normal thing and we all feel that way sometimes. But the show is ultimately about finding your confidence and believing in yourself, and that's a really powerful message… especially on reality TV. You really don't get that very often from most reality series out there (or ever, let's be real).
9 It's About Boys
Monica and Krista are in their early 20s, so they're super boy crazy, naturally. They spot cute boys wherever they go and in the opening credits, Monica jokes about finding a guy "that doesn't drive me insane." It's a tall order sometimes, unfortunately, as we all know way too well. The two of them are always looking for excuses to meet new guys and talk to them, and for Monica of course, the question is always whether or not a guy will be cool with her gift.
8 It's Never Creepy
If you think that Monica is super creepy and scary because she can talk to the dead, don't go down that road. This series is never, ever creepy. Instead, it proves how beautiful it can be to give people closure about the people that they still love and still think about all the time. If you've ever wondered what your grandma is thinking up there, this is the show for you.
7 It's Sad
Okay, so the show is definitely sad, since it involves a ton of conversations about dads and moms and sisters and boyfriends and girlfriends and best friends who have passed away, often in super tragic ways. But that's still a reason to tune in, because life has its sad moments and we shouldn't ignore that. Sometimes you have to talk about tragic stuff in order to grow and move on. As Monica says, "It's about the healing."
6 It's Relatable
If you've ever lost a loved one, you can relate to this show and it might make you feel better, too. You can definitely relate when you watch Monica give any one of her readings. You might even wish you could call her up and get her to give you a reading. Hey, it could happen.
5 It's Inspiring
When you see Monica learn and grow throughout the series, you can't help but get super inspired. You'll want to go ahead and follow your own dreams, or if you haven't discovered what makes you you and what you want to pursue in life, you'll be inspired to finally find it. Monica is really passionate about what she does, and she's a real role model to any young woman out there who is also coming into her own.
4 It's About Being Brave
Monica and Krista decided to leave everything and everyone behind and move to San Diego. They transferred to college there, said goodbye to their close friends and family, and drove a truck for several days. Okay, Krista drove the truck. Seriously, when you watch the season two premiere and see Krista driving this massive truck, you will be incredibly impressed. It's a real sight.
3 It's Entertaining
Simply put, you will never be bored when watching this show. You'll always want to see what new readings Monica gives and who she helps. You'll be along for the ride no matter what, and will especially want to see who she dates next. You'll basically feel like Monica is your own BFF. And that's probably what she wants.
2 It's Heartwarming
Monica loves her friends, her family, and the strangers that she comes into contact with and touches their lives. It's a super heartwarming show and, yeah, you might cry once or twice when watching every single episode. Okay, you'll cry the entire time basically, but that's okay. It's that powerful.
1 It's Hilarious
Monica is a pretty funny girl, as Krista loves to point out. Sometimes she lets loose and acts pretty wild and crazy, which any young girl does, so you can definitely relate. It's always pretty funny when you see her walking up to people in the most normal and random situations (like in a parking lot when she and Krista were getting gas on their road trip) and asking if she can give them a message from beyond. She even thinks it's hilarious herself, so we're not poking fun at her -- we're totally in awe of her gift, and we stand behind her 100 percent. So answer this question: why aren't you watching yet?
